Title: JM and bass harmonics
Post by: Blackfield on May 27, 2011, 01:28:29 AM
I Listened to the commentary tracks for When dream and day reunite DVD yesterday and it struck me that they were discussing some very important things. I guess you have heard it. They are talking about JM doing alot of these bass harmonics, which he does on WDADU, and being a big part of the sound. When I&W were written they stated that the producer for that record wanted the bass to be more in the background, more solid to give the sound more ground. JM stated that they didn't have the same band-vibe anymore, they are stuck in a tour/writing-process. I can understand how he was feeling about the whole situation. The statement JM makes in TSCO-documentary makes alot more sense to me when I listened to this.

"It kinda reminds me of the one-on-one dynamics I used to have with John..."

So are we getting more awesome bass harmonics on the new album? I hope so.

^This. Bass parts on WDADU are just impossible and incredible to play for normal human. If we could get just a bit of this on DT11 it would be great...

Deducing from JM's comment on the writing dynamics with John to the possible existence of bass harmonics on DT11 is a bit of a bold move imo. However, I think it's perfectly possible that the bass will be given more musical freedom and more presence on the new album. Also, I think that an increase of interaction between drums and bass shouldn't be ruled out either.

This...plus the harmonics never disappeared.

I do hope JM is given more room to shine on this record...but it has nothing to do with whether or not he plays more/less bass harmonics.

I'm not sure about BC&SL but there were definitely bass harmonics in SC and 8VM

I've heard about bass harmonics on 8vm, but never heard any on the CD itself.  Where are they?  During on of MP's fills in medicate I can kinda sorta hear something that might have bass harmonics, but I'm not sure.

IIRC, the thing I remember the most is that they were reminiscing about "sad" bass lines not really being in their music anymore.

Was watching a John Myung instructional video clip on youtube, and this was the first comment:

"I definitely prefer Myung as a teacher. Petrucci told me to sell my guitar on Ebay :("

:lol

That opening is absolutely one of the most pristinely beautiful tings I've heard in a while, both visually and musically.

Sacrificed Sons also have a few bass harmonics.  Not many, but they're there.

I'm loving the bass harmonics towards the end of Lines in the Sand, they're quite similar to PT's Russia on Ice ones now that I think about it  :hat

ACOS has some nice melodic ones too

Geez, everytime I hear something off of Awake, I feel like crying...What a wonderful album!
On topic, JM is a marvellous bassist! I really hope he's more audible than of late in  DT 11.

I hope JM doesn't go back to the older style. His playing is much more mature now and compliments his role in the band. Anyone that cannot hear JM is seriously deaf.

Thank you for the compliment! Read the rules of the forum before making comments like that. And because it is YOUR opinion doesn't mean you're right.

Lol, I'm surprised with this opinion. It's your opinion and I don't want to argue, but nodoby here said that cannot hears what JM is playing. On BC&SL he's role was to follow guitars, his sound is a little bit not of my favourites, but hey, I could hear him very well on last album. Some very cool parts can be found on The Best Of Times and The Count Of Tuscany, but comparing to older stuff... Older stuff (I&W, Awake, WDADU, SFAM) are just awesome and I would love to hear a little bit of that style on DT11.

My complaints are the usual:

-JMX doubles the riff too often nowadays. he always has done this, but it happens too much.
-In conjunction with the doubling, because of the type of distortion he uses, it blends in too well with JP's tone. You can hear it there, but it doesn't sound right, and can get lost in the mix.

He uses distortion a lot now.
