I know several people have mentioned them getting on Conan. I brought up (in this (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=23146.0) thread) the idea of actually campaigning to get them on, to which some people were interested in.
So I was thinking. Ever since Conan lost the Tonight Show and the whole Team Coco thing started, he's kind of lived by Twitter. So, theoretically, if we can make a lot of posts about how we'd like to see DT on Conan, he might actually go for it.
This is going to take a fairly large amount of people, we're going to want to make it look like there's a lot of interest and excitement. We might even want to bring this idea to other DT and DT related forums.
I've got an idea on the gist of what we should say, but I'm not sure on what exactly we should say. I'm thinking something with mentioning the recent line up change and the new album coming out. Maybe mention that the new album is going to be big and he should definitely get them on. We might also be able to appeal to the fact that Conan is, himself, a guitarist.
There are a few things I"m not sure of yet though. I don't really know how to use Twitter. I guess we just put an @ before their account name? But then, how do we get things to trend? Should we all use the same message, or would it be more effective if we all made our own posts? Should we each only post one? I mean, we don't want to spam, but would a repeat post be ill advised?
I think there's a lot of potential for this. If we can work this out, we might make this happen.
TL;DR - Let's come up with a good message to tweet and tell Conan to get DT on his show.
UPDATE: We've got an official Facebook fanpage, thanks to ChrisDTM. The page can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Campaign-For-Dream-Theater-to-Play-on-Conan/201345086569215 (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Campaign-For-Dream-Theater-to-Play-on-Conan/201345086569215)
We also have an official thread on the Conan fanpage thanks to ishak540m, found here: https://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=108905269168364&topic=1822 (https://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=108905269168364&topic=1822)
The official tag for twitter posts is #DTforCoco

I'm a twitter moron... can you do a twitter petition or something like it? Or how about FB? It would be cool to see for sure! Timing's right too...we campaign for 5 months and the new album will be out... :yarr
-
His user is "ConanOBrien".
Is this how it's usually done in getting artists on his shows? Cause if not, I don't really see the point of it.
-
Well, I'm sure that fans don't normally get bands on shows like this at all. But it would be neat to attempt.
-
Being a huge Conan fan, I love this idea. If a lot of you end up sending him messages and he responds, I'll make a twitter account and send him a message too.
-
Maybe they'll get on the show if LaBrie, Petrucci and Rudess promise to get their goatees/beards shaved off. ;) ;) ;)
-
@ConanOBrien You guys should totally get @DreamTheater to appear on your show! #DreamTheater
Maybe something like that?
-
I'd love to see them on Conan.
Weren't they supposed to be on the CBS Morning show a few years back, but refused to condense their song to fit into the time allotted?
-

Good start, but we would want to say @DreamTheaterNet or some random dude will be really surprised. Also recommend something more like #DTforCoco because it sounds more like a campaign.
I've got a few followers with Ytse Times, so I can pass the word along there. The most effective way to do it would be to have lots of people do it at the same time. You're probably not going to get anything to trend because as we've discussed, DT isn't mainstream and it takes a lot of people to suddenly all talk about the same topic.
-
Anything's possible..
Start a hashtag for the campaign. #DTonCONAN or something more creative..
Start a facebook page for it.
Lots of conan staff are on twitter. I follow almost all of then and I'm @chadtoney. Tell them about the campaign.

I don't think its exactly common. But Conan cares a lot about his internet, primarily Twitter, followers. They helped him a lot during the whole Leno fiasco. So I imagine if we could create enough buzz, something could definitely happen.

#DTforCoco is a great idea. I honestly don't know really anything about Twitter, and it seems like you do. So if you're on board for all this, I think we'll definitely be needing your help.

I can't remember if it was Conan or Jimmy Fallon, but one of them had Mastodon on so it's not impossible to get metal acts on the show by any stretch.

It was on Jimmy Fallon while promoting Crack The Skye.

Yeah, I remember seeing Mastodon on some talk show. That was epic and uncalled for. :metal

I'd love to see them on Conan.
Weren't they supposed to be on the CBS Morning show a few years back, but refused to condense their song to fit into the time allotted?
It wasn't a time constraint. They wanted DT to do a stripped-down acoustic set. Which DT (or at least MP) didn't think would be a fair representation of the band's music.

No

Ouch. Mistake.
1. Anyone who went to find anything more by them would quickly discover what the band's music actually sounded like.
2. An acoustic version of PMU, say, is still gonna sound like PMU. An acoustic rock song won't suddenly make the band sound like balladeers. If there's something people like in a stripped down version, there's something that many of those viewers will like in the fully fledged version.
3. Their reputation is half of what precludes them radio play. They've been unfairly saddled with the preconception that they can't play with emotion. Not only would they prove the stereotype wrong, but an acoustic arrangement would even go as far as to emphasise the emotional bits. Put them on the map as talented songwriters, as well as technical musicians.
4. Flood gates would open a little. Demonstrating that one chat show's been willing to take a punt proves that someone's recognised a market, giving other broadcasters perhaps a little confidence in their abilities.
5. The fans would like it, and so a (rare!) acoustic performance would garner a lot of hits on YouTube, again demonstrating not only the presence of a market, but also encourage further publicity. Every hit for "DT Pull Me Under Acoustic" would generate extra publicity for the CBS Morning Show, and - while we're not a very well united fanbase, and would struggle to organise a gangbang in a brothel, we're very good at watching videos.
Would've been brilliant from a publicity perspective, and for the fans to boot. Not wise to refuse it, I'd say.
Ah well.

lets do it

Perhaps if we can manage to get them on Conan they'll be able to recapture that lost publicity.

i think a good place to start is a fbook page, then we can lightly spam the DT and mangini fbook pages with a link

Good Job Ishak! I signed!

Already posted on the official DT fbook page. Posting the message on the Ytse Times or Prog Archives forum, Even on the official DT Youtube videos would do wonders to help our campaign!

i think we should have our own facebook fan page as well

Make it so #1............ :yarr
-
I'm wondering how many posts we can make before it's considered annoying/spam.
There's the obvious "@ConanOBrien You guys should totally get @DreamTheaterNet to appear on your show! #DTforCoco"
But could we do the same on each of the page twitters for all the members of DT? Something like:
"@PirateCJS you guys should totally go on @ConanOBrien #DTforCoco"
One of those for each member, plus the main one for DT itself. Then maybe do the same on Facebook. Raise awareness for the campaign through YtseTimes and Youtube. We might be able to make this happen.
i think we should have our own facebook fan page as well
Definately, and we can keep with the "DT for Coco" for that as well
-
i think we should have our own facebook fan page as well
QFT :yarr
Anyone around here knowledable about making these fan pages? Not sure how exactly to do it.

@ the one n only robwebster:
as much as it might have been a mistake, maybe it was a mistake for the show to make such an odd demand.
really, the band shoulda took the slot and agreed to the terms, only to pull a nirvana on the show/network and launch into they is heaviest, most un-acoustic song.
but really really, solitary shell woulda made for a great song on (inter)national TV.
-
I sent one to Conan on twitter and liked that page on Facebook. It'd be cool if it all works out
-
Liked the facebook page. Going to try to spread it on facebook. I also tweeted and mentioned Conan a bit ago. Will do again soon! I think everyone should tag #DTforCoco as well as #DT11 in their tweets.
-
I think it could work, the album might be released in September, and they have no dates yet for then.
-
if anyone has any suggestions for the facebook page, just put the here, ill add them in
-
Just did a mess of tweets and shared the fan page. I'm kind of excited at the possibility of this.
-
im envisioning them playing about to crash (reprise) just cause its short and shows alot of DT's style
but obviously the thing to do is play stuff off the new album
-

So am I. A few of my friends on FB have already liked the page since it showed I like it. Didn't even post the link yet. haha.
-
Given all of the recent goings in in DT land, there's the possibility of them actually doing an interview, too. They had Steve Martin on last week. He did the second interview of the night, then played a song off his new album.
I could totally see them doing an interview. Andy sitting next to Myung, a couple amusing comments. Talk of the new album, laughter, music. Probably the greatest episode ever.

I know, right? That would be so spectacular. And can you imagine the ratings for that episode?

If DT fans tuned in, it would be amazing since it would be the usual audience + the DT fanbase (coming from someone who does not watch Conan on a regular basis).

Thanks to chrisbDTM for creating page! :metal

Posted the link on all of the members facebooks. Has anyone spread the fanpage and #DTforCoco to the JP/JR/JLB forums yet?

Ah well.
Perhaps. I suspect MP was thinking of bands like Mr. Big or Extreme that had a big hit with an acoustic ballad, and then could never seem to shake that image.

I think at least part of the issue was space constraints. A couple of guys on stools with acoustic guitars take up a lot less room than the Siamese Monster. And, remember, this was a morning show, not a late night show with a big stage, and not the type of show that most metalheads are watching at 6:00 am.

Ramdom thought...
DT and Conan have something in common. Conan has a character on his show called the Masturbating Bear. Petrucci is bear-like.

I think that means this is ordained by the gods.

Updated the OP with relevant links and information. The fanpage is growing pretty quick.
Also, has anyone made any posts on youtube yet? Make a post and then we can all like it. And you can like a post, even your own post, multiple times. We could get it into the top spot and keep it there. Another way to spread the word.
-
Liked FB page so far. When I back home I will think of other things ;) some big things are going here my friends ;) :tup

Conan's latest Twitter update:
"From the outside, some Korean funeral homes look just like Korean massage parlors. My sincerest apologies to the entire Myong family."

Nugget? :P

I'd like to think that's related and we're getting somewhere.

It probably wouldn't hurt to do several of their official videos. A high volume of messages telling people to join should, theoretically, get a high volume of people joining.

sensationalist

I messaged James Labrie about it on facebook. The chances of him responding are slim, but what the hell, he might at least see it? I sent him the link to the FB page too.

The FB page is definitely starting to pick up. But the Tweets seem a bit scant. Anyone have some ideas on how to get those going a bit more?

We need to get people coordinated here on the forums regarding the tweets and keep spreading the word on facebook. In theory, the more we spread the word on facebook, the more we can bet on people joining the party on twitter. It wouldn't hurt for the facebook page to suggest certain hashtags to use for everyone to concentrate on.

I'm in the Conan Open Thread right now. I've posted the link a couple times, but the thing moves so fast, I don't think anyone's really going to see it.

What I wanted was to post a link of the fb page on the youtube comments of the drummer doc vid , but it wouldn't let me for some odd reason :-\

Perhaps try tinyurl?
-
I would love to see them on Conan but I think the possibility of that happening will depend on the length of the songs on the new album. If they are all long then forget it. They won't go on the show and play an old song when the reason you go on shows like this is to promote your new material. Does anyone have any idea of how long Conan's show alots for a song? Most likely it will have to be a least 5 minutes.
-
I think it's about 5 minutes. Maybe 6. I think the taping of the show is much longer. So I mean, it would all come down to editing. I'm sure they could get on the show. It's just how much of the whole show would be shown.
-
If they do play something from the new album, I'm guessing there will be a few to choose from that would fit that time requirement.
-
I would imagine so. I'm trying to make contact with some group on Twitter. See if we can get more people helping out.
-
I'd love to see it. But I have a feeling they wouldn't be a terribly large draw for the show. The majority of the populous doesn't even know who dream theater is. At least, that's what I gander from my experiences going through life. Every time someone asks me about my favorite band and I mention DT....they always get a puzzled look on their faces. There's only been like...3 people I've ever talked to out in the world that knows who they are. Not to mention their songs are much longer than the average radio band. I'm not sure what they'd play on the show.
-
Average person? Perhaps not. But it would pull in the DT crowd. Which would be considerable. This would also expose a whole new audience to Conan, which would possibly, if not probably, get plenty of them hooked, thus increasing his viewership.
On the other side of this coin, there's the people that haven't even heard of DT. That's an entirely new crowd getting exposed to DT. People that might not have ever heard of them otherwise. Now, if they play their cards right, this new crowd might be thoroughly intrigued. However, unless they get a great interview, that's mainly going to come down to song choice. They'll need something that represents the band very well, while still having a broader appeal. And besides all that, they'll need something to help dispel that myth that they're all just music geeks that have no feeling in their music.
The Conan Facebook has about 1.5 million fans. Let's say of these, 300,000 like them. Of those 300,000, let's say about half like them enough to buy the new album when it drops. This would be a very good thing.
The DT facebok has about 1.8 mill. If even a quarter of those become new dedicated Conan viewers, that'd also be fantastic.
From my point of view, everyone wins here. Then again, I'm playing the optimistic dreamer at the moment. So take it as you will.
-
Conan is known for having lesser known artists come and play on his show. Having DT on wouldn't be too far fetched.
-
I have posted links of the facebook page to the JP, JR & JMX fanpages as well as the DT page.
Still no luck posting the links on youtube. :-[
-
Try tinyurl. Youtube might have a block on facebook links. If all else fails, just tell people to search the page title and tell them about the Twitter hash tag.

Youtube is only letting me post without links for some reason? Never spammed on any vids so I have no clue what's up.
-
Hmm, that's pretty odd. If that's the case then, just tell people to search "Campaign for Dream Theater to play on Conan" on Facebook.
-
In my experience, YouTube doesn't let you put any links in comments.
-
Well, shit. We'll make it work just fine though, I"m sure. Also if someone manages to add JLB on Facebook and manages to catch him on Facebook chat, could be helpful. Ask him if they'd be interested and give him the link, etc.

I posted info about the fanpage but no link. Looks like a couple a people liked it but not enough to get it to the top.
I also posted the #DTforCoco hashtag and did the same for JP, JR, JMX & MM's pages on facebook.
Things seem to be going steadily so far, Let's hope it keeps going

At first I read the title as "Campaign to get DT on Conan the Barbarian"
-
CONAN WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE?
THE SOLDIERS IN THE WINE!
-
While I understand the enthusiasm and dedication to get DT on Conan, but wouldn't it make more sense to try for Jimmy Fallon? JF is in New York and CB is in California. JF is WAY more music-centric and has a lot of cool musical guests. Back when Conan was in NY, before The Tonight Show, it made sense but I would think now JF would be the one to try and petition. I think the audience DT fan turnout would be much higher in the NY show also.
Anyway, if they do get on Conan (or Jimmy), it'll be GREAT! And nice work with the FB campaign. :)
-
Yeah, but Conan's kinda funnier.
-
Conan has certainly banked more comedy cred by being consistently funny over the years, but Fallon's show is pretty funny. But what would be more likely than DT playing Fallon would be one of the members sitting in with The Roots; I could totally see that happening, especially JR or JP. Things like that happen a lot on Fallon's show.
-
Which video was it? I'll vote it up frequently. You can vote up a comment a couple times a day, even your own.
The first episode of the Spirit Carries On drummer documentary.
-
JP with The Roots is the most probable, and "sort of" happened. I started watching a show a couple of months ago and in the first wide shot there's this guitarist who looks like ToT-era JP playing a MusicMan and I SWEAR it was JP and I started freaking out! It took a while before there was a close shot and it turns out it was Steve Lukather but not being familiar with him I have to be forgiven for thinking it was JP initially. I hadn't seen JP in a while so I thought/hoped he went back to the ToT look but he didn't.
Honestly, I used to love Conan, but I don't even watch him anymore. I have a DVR so it's not the time slot. I just find his guests lame, Andy is lame, and his comedy just doesn't do it for me. Jimmy Fallon + The Roots + Higgins + guests is a total package.
JF did an entire show with just Springsteen. He does music week themes (Bob Marley Week was most recent). He does live jams and performances with special guests all the time. Phil Collen and even Yngwie have sat-in with The Roots. Jimmy knows music and really appreciates all styles and genres.
Is there a DT on Fallon FB campaign anywhere? Maybe I should try and get one of those going as the more we can get the word out the better.
PS - Ferguson SUCKS.
-
Conan has certainly banked more comedy cred by being consistently funny over the years, but Fallon's show is pretty funny. But what would be more likely than DT playing Fallon would be one of the members sitting in with The Roots; I could totally see that happening, especially JR or JP. Things like that happen a lot on Fallon's show.
I once caught Yngwie sitting in with the Roots on Fallon. I didn't watch the whole show but I thought that was cool.
-
I personally cannot stand Jimmy Fallon. He's just so unfunny. And he tries so hard. I'd put him just slightly above George Lopez.
That said, if DT actually did get on JF though, I'd definitely watch it. I'll support them regardless.
Question though, with JF does the musical guest just sit in with The Roots? I mean, that'd be cool and all, but I don't think that would get DT the recognition they deserve. That'd be fantastic once they already had a bit more mainstream recognition. But to get that they'd have to expose a whole not audience to their music.
Also, pretty sure Conans currant show wins for guests. I mean, he had on Tim and Eric. And it was the best thing ever.
-
^^
One musician will often sit-in with the roots and they can promote themselves or their band.
A whole band guest would play at the end as per usual.
Any exposure is good exposure.
It's too bad you don't like JF's comedy, cuz he does SO MUCH music-related stuff and The Roots are versatile beyond belief and can play and jam on anything and everything. If you could just watch the show and ignore the jokes I'm sure you'll be impressed.
-
I might give it a shot sometime for the music.
And yeah, if that's how the musical guests work it wouldn't be bad at all. I misunderstood and thought just the one member played with The Roots and that was it. In which case, that would open a bunch of people up to Petruccis ability, but only a comparative few would get back to DT. But if they still play at the end, then it would be pretty fantastic. It would showcase the band and give a broader showcase of JP.
-
having 2 groups is probably just gonna divide the effort
-
Exactly what I said in the Jimmy Fallon thread. I just didn't want to put it quite so bluntly so it didn't come off like I was just biased toward my own thing.
-
I sent a short message in JLB's inbox on facebook informing him about this campaign. I also sent him the link of the fb group and asked him to inform the guys. But did he receive it? I don't know how one can possibly set his message settings on facebook but it would seem more realistic that messages from people he doesn't know personally could be blocked somehow...
-
I you send it to him through the chat option, he'll most likely respond back to you
-
I never find him online. And if he's not the message will go to his inbox, so it's pretty much the same.
-
that would be so awesome if he ended up liking the fanpage. I'm pretty sure if we could bring the fanpage to the attention to any of them it would take off amazingly. Because I imagine then they'd talk about it amongst themselves. And then (hopefully) agree they'd like to do it. Then management would contact management. And the rest would be TV history.

This
I actually considered it but I wasn't sure if I should have posted a link. Let's hope they do discuss it amongst themselves. Maybe the Roadrunner might take notice as well, I mean they do want to promote the band as much as possible!

perhaps something along the lines of "a group of diehard Dream Theater fans have taken up a campaign to see Dream Theater on the Conan O'Brien show! They've got a facebook page, yadda yadda, Help spread the word!" etc
well you get the idea.
-
That's actually a really good idea. I didn't even think of going to news outlets.
-
Someone fooking do that! Haha...I've been spreading the word over on all the DT pages etc still. The page is climing! ;D
-
I sent an email to Blabbermouth with a link to the facebook, this thread, and the DTforCoCo hashtag on twitter
-
Shit yeah, man. This might just take off like a rocket.
-
OK, so I send an e-mail on this adress bmouth@bellatlantic.net with link to this thread and facebook sign. I also wrote some things about how we are getting into it ;) maybe it helps ;) :tup

I will keep posting on Dream Theater's facebook page, just yesterday after posting, it got another 40 fans, so that is one place where a lot of people are looking.
-
Yeah, I've noticed that. Posting on the DT wall you can get several new fans. I've also gotten a few from JLBs page.
-
Yep, and more likes coming in fom Jordans and Mangini's. :)

And Jen comes out of nowhere to save the day! :djhef:

JLB just accepted my friend request. He's on chat right now and I sent him a message. I'm not too hopeful for a response. But on the off chance he does, I plan to tell him about the campaign. Perhaps we could get some legit backing going.
EDIT: Aaaand he's off.
-
Wow, Blabbermouth hasn't done anything yet. Amazing
-
I know, it's surprising. I mean, I'm sure they could find a way to spin it into Portnoy being the worst person ever.
-
This seems to have died a bit. A quick bump. Get things going again.

Just reposted the fanpage link on the official DT facebook!
-
Awesome, now should be a good time. A lot of people should be looking at for the next few days.
-
Yeah I've been posting this around still on all the DT's guy facebook pages every night mostly :)
-
Yeah, that's what we need to do. I was doing that. But I kinda forgot. I'm bad at this. The page is still growing though. So hopefully pretty soon well get somewhere.

This comment just in on the facebook page --
Samantha Banks
They can`t afford it, remember they`re not on a real network, besides Dream Theater isn`t that good I think Aerosmith would be better because Steven Tyler could teach Conan to dress in drag, but they could never afford that eaither...
Go get her!

We need simple strategies to get this more fans. Some of the best times to post this are when DT, JP, JLB, Jordan make a post. So then post on their wall straight after so more people will see it. I've noticed if the DT page doesn't make a post and you look at the times when people post it will say things like 3 minutes to 1hour ago to 2 hours ago. Whereas if the make a post more people start posting on their wall back, so it's like 1 minute ago, 3 minutes ago, 5 minutes ago, 10 minutes ago. I hope that made sense haha.
-
The DT page moves quick enough, it probably wouldn't hurt to post it a couple times a day. I'd say take a look, if it's not on the first page, post it.
-
the answer is jordan rudess's twitter. gotta tweet him and hope he somehow sees it
-
The one thing I don't like about Twitter is you can't really see what's going on as well. With the FB page, you can see more people supporting it, and the following growing. With Twitter you just kinda gotta hope.
-
the facebook pages are misleading. i doubt that half of them have done anything, even though i try to remind them to
-
The other question is how much it would cost to have DT play on Conan and whether Conan has the budget for it.

if the campaign ever made it to that decision then we would have done our job
-
Just hit 800! Wooohooo! :metal

I'm sure that's an non-issue

Thinking I'll bump this now with everyone on. Generate some more buzz, get things off the ground, see what we can do.

i update the fb statuses every once in a while with news, videos, etc.
-
Yeah, I've noticed. It's helped me a few times. I'll have been out for the day, get home, see the Campaign page has updated with news. I heard about the single release last night because of it, ahah.

AWESOME UPDATE!
Got to talk to James on facebook chat and mentioned the campaign

Greetings oh great Pirate God of Rock
Many fans have started a campaign to get DT on Conan O'Brien. I was wondering if perhaps you guys would actually be interested in that?

Will do, and a good evening to you, good sir.
Looks like DT's would be interested. And I talked to him. This is kind of awesome.

kind of awesome.
It teems of raging and nonsensical awesomeness

very cool

There's plenty of great talk shows out there. Why Conan? Is he the only one accepting campaigns?
-

He is the biggest name that is likely to actually have them on. I don't see them ever getting on Leno or Letterman (unless they have a Top 10 hit first). They are probably more likely to get on Fallon, but he isn't as big a name as Conan.
-
Frankly, I like Fallon better than Conan. But there's no point of starting another campaign, I suppose. I'd love to see DT on like, the Colbert Report.

I like Fallon better too, but I am rarely up late enough to catch his show.
I don't see DT ever appearing on Colbert. How often does he even feature music?
-

Because he's the best. ;D
-
The Mars Volta were on Letterman, so DT wouldn't be out of the question.

Not very often, but he did have Rush in there once. So clearly he's not averse to prog, hahah.
-
I've kinda mostly fallen off the forum. With this being the eve of the US release, I figure I should probably bump this. Now's the time. Let's make it happen.
-
The Mars Volta were on Letterman, so DT wouldn't be out of the question.
Only because "The Widow" had massive radio play.

They didn't play "The Widow", and this was on the Bedlam in Goliath supporting tour anyway, so I doubt that particular single had anything to do with it.
But I hope this thing gets off the ground. I'd love to see DT on Conan one day, and it's a great target to shoot for: not as huge and prog-averse as Leno and Letterman, but not as comparatively small as Fallon, Lopez, etc. Anyway, as for the campaign, do the people who've, say, liked the Facebook page actually support the campaign in any way? I actually liked the page a long time ago (back when I was a lurker) and forgot about it. Not much for a guy to do to personally get DT on Conan.
EDIT: Also, what would they play? DT doesn't do the late-night scene, and have they ever actually performed a radio edit of a song?

i wonder if we could get them on the jewls holland show?

That would be amazing. Metallica have done it, so why not DT?
-
I should ask the team coco people if they got any idea about this yet!
-
If you've got a way to contact them, go for it. IT can only help the cause.
