I just did a quick search for a reason on the internet and I couldn't find one.. is there any particular reason why they don't eat meat, or is it just a tradition?
I ask because my grandparents are here and they made a big deal about not being able to eat meat today, which I found odd.
-
We do. I'm going to go home and have some in just a bit.

You're one strange Christian.
-
Yeah a lot of Christians do, some don't. I think it's mostly done during Lent as a form of abstinence.

Oh. Maybe it's a Catholic thing then, because my Grandparents are Catholic.
That explains a lot then.. nevermind. This can be locked :lol
-
I don't know either...I think it is just a catholic tradition, though

Well, yes. But I'm not sure what meat has to do with that. :D
OMNOMNOMNOM! :pacman: :ryule: :godisgood:

Yeah, not sure. I don't see why Jesus would object to my consumption of Del Taco on Fridays.
-
Yea, I didn't think about it being a random Catholic tradition. It's my fault for assuming it applied to all Christians.
EDIT: Actually, wait, what is the reason they don't eat meat?
-
As far as I know, it's not biblical. It's a way to represent the sacrifice Jesus made on good friday, and since most people eat meat, that was just decided upon to be the sacrifice.
-
Whoops, I had milk, chicken nuggets, and a pound of ground beef mixed with other stuff (including bacon).
My bad Jesus
-
So I'm good if I eat at Taco Bell, right?
-J
-
Yeah, it's a catholic thing. I didn't eat meat all day today.
fish is ok though, that's why restaurants have a "fish fry" on friday.

I just a did a study on this a couple months ago, and based on the timeline presented in the gospels and cross-referencing with Jewish traditions and feasts, Jesus was most likely crucified on a Wednesday.
-
It's done on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent as a sign of penance. No pope has ever declared why on those days but it was pick up and done by catholics. We were told just to do it. :lol
-
So I'm good if I eat at Taco Bell, right?
-J
I'm not sure what they serve is really considered "meat" anyways. You're probably safe.

Not to derail the thread, but Mark gives a detailed day-by-day timeline of the Last Week, and the crucifixion was clearly on Friday.
Having said that, Catholics don't eat meat on Friday because Mary told them not to.
-
It's a simple pietistic practice and a form of fasting for the Lenten season. I don't see the problem.

I was about to post something about an unnecessary punchline, but it turns out there's a .gif in the post I'm quoting that I can't see but does the job for me.

I didn't think the "no meat on Fridays" thing was for Lent. I thought it was all the time. It seems like if it was Lenten, it would be "no meat during Lent" not "no meat on Fridays during Lent". That isn't much of a sacrifice.
-
Yeah, I was under the impression it was a Catholic thing.
-
You are suppose to replace meat with fish on Fridays.

Hef, before the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's, the rule was to have no meat every Friday and no meat at all during Lent. Fridays in Lent were then days of complete fasting.
And yes, I agree. The rule is awfully lax and not much of a penitence at all. In fact, I LOVE no-meat days because it's an excuse to have fish and mac&cheese.
-
Also, the current pope relaxed the rules even further. Once you reach the age of 85, you can eat whatever the hell you want on Fridays. The stance I guess is, if you lived that long, you deserve to eat whatever.

This. I try not to eat meat on Friday's during Lent. It's sort of a sacrifice. As I understand the deal, fish was the most common meal back in the day, so as a way to show respect, sacrifice, whatever I can't remember the specific, you abstained of eating more expensive meals like meat. The other day I was talking to my mum and asked her that since fish now-a-days is more expensive they should switch the rules: no fish on Friday's!
Also, this rule does not apply to the sick or the elderly, as Tempus pointed out.

So the Pope must be 85 then to change the rule. :lol

No. Abstinence from meat is required from the age of 14 and up, and fasting is required between the ages of 14 and 59.
-
Is it that technical?
-
Knowing Catholicism, probably. The define their shit, man.
-
I went out with a Catholic girl for a short time and I can assure you she wanted meat badly. So much so we disagreed about it. I said it would be like masturbation to do it before marriage - she said that was "just silly" and 5 minutes earlier had been saying how much she'd been hurt by having it before marriage with two other men.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend if that's what you meant. There's actually a story behind my response. There was something on the national news here in the states a couple of months ago about how taco bell's meat didn't actually meet the specifications of actually being considered meat. It has a bunch of fillers in it ect. ect... and according to one of our government agencies was less than 30% meat if my memory serves me right.

Not exactly. Someone sued them for such a thing, but I think that was just dropped because it IS meat.

No worries.

They don't eat meat on Fridays because they don't care about the pudding.
Or maybe because they already had a bowl of cereal, and everybody is Russian anyway.

The Catholics to stay hip and healthy and keep up with the changing times have announced, "Low carb Wednesdays"
Its got the whole church buzzing!
