Title: Incubus
Post by: zerogravityfat on April 11, 2011, 01:37:32 PM
New album is coming out soon, here is the new single:
https://soundcloud.com/incubus/adolescents

I wasn't too crazy about the last albums, decent songs here and there, but the sound scape in this one has a good feel, hope the rest are around this model. (the guitarist spaz fella says they are, and he studied the chord progressions alot so sounds good)

I liked the last CD a lot.  I think they sound better live.  Not too many bands can say that & Brandon has a killer voice.  I've heard this new sound.  It's a bit similar to what they've done but it's still good.

Is their newer stuff really worth getting? I have S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, and Morning View, but I like S.C.I.E.N.C.E. the best by far. It seems like they've gotten a lot poppier in recent years, though I've admittedly only heard the singles.

if you like the old stuff, skip the middle and get this new album coming out. nothing much to see in teh middle except a few songs like pantomime, and a couple of songs from crow.

I wasn't a big fan of Light Grenades to be honest.  Crow was pretty decent, but nothing can beat the amazing trilogy of S.C.I.E.N.C.E, Make Yourself and Morning View.

New song has a nice atmosphere and classic Incubus sound to it, but not crazy about it on first listen, I definitely admit it would be a grower of a song.  First day buyer nevertheless.  Anyone know the release date of the album?

Yeah, I can't believe I've listened to them for so long compared to other bands... I picked them up around the time Crow was released.

I enjoy the newer stuff as old, make sure to get Fungus Amoungus, which is one of the best first records from any band.

I like the new song and I have high hopes for the album, to me Incubus can never do much wrong with the exception of "A Crow . . ." which was terrible and had only one redeemable song in my opening.
Thanks Letters.  Man, I can't believe Light Grenades came out 5 years ago!!  Where the hell does the time go.

I remember moving into my first college apartment and my new roommate were listening to some Incubus and he pre-ordered the album to get advance ticket purchase to see them. Man, where does the time go :(

If I recall Mike went to Harvard to study composition in 2007 or 2008. He has some of my favorite guitar tones, great well rounded guitar player.

I like quite a few songs here and there from this band, but I think Morning View is a pretty bad album (I have no idea why it is considered one of their best), and the same goes for Crow if I recall correctly.  Light Grenades wasn't great, but I think it was better than either of those.

Yeah I knew that would be an unpopular opinion, sorry guys. :lol

I really despise the singles (Wish You Were Here and Nice to Know You, which by the way sound like the same damn song to me) and I have ever since first hearing them.  Then I remember being fairly unimpressed with the rest of the album when I did get around to hearing it, and it didn't help that I went into it with a low opinion of those two songs from the outset.

For what it's worth, I do remember liking Aqueous Transmission a lot (that is on Morning View, right?).

Yes.

Anyway, Nice to Know You and Wish You Were Here are both in my top 10 Incubus songs.  Possibly, top 5.  Funny how different opinions can be!

It's not like I have an aversion to singles either.  Pardon Me and Dig would probably be in my top 10 Incubus songs, if I were to make a list.

I've been listening to the new album for a little bit and well, it's different. It's good but I'd rate the album second to worst (right about A Crow). The album is very held back.

The first half of the album reminds me of Elton John's 1995 Made In England album.

New track is cool I think. It has something of the old good Incubus that I know from Morning View, Make Yourself or SCIENCE. These are my favourites by the way. Only one song from A Crow Left Of The Murder filled my head for longer but it just a touch ;) I hope that the newer stuff will have similar tracks to The Warmth, Pardon Me, Drive etc... Last two albums were so...hm weird ;)

So has anyone else heard the 4-movement epic "The Odyssey" by these guys? I had the tracks and combined them into one track and it's a sprawling piece that covers a lot of musical ground that is out of the band's usual sound, and is VERY proggy over all, with sounds that remind me of King Crimson and Pink Floyd! It's a pretty good song and while I don't know much about this band, this piece is pretty amazing and shows off that they really know their stuff.

I like the first part "Follow" but the rest of it never really did anything for me.

Shame about If Not Now, When? I get what they were going for but the whole album was a real disappointment, which really sucks because I even loved Light Grenades.

I don't think it's that bad of an album, I understand where they were going with it and I think they did a good job.

These guys are nearing their 40's, they can't be putting out Make Yourself and Morning View every record.

The Warmth is one of their best songs.  Shame they didn't play Stellar, that's one of their best too.  I wonder if these guys are planning on a new release.  Hopefully better than the last piece of crap.

The last album was like adult contemporary, corporate elevator music. Unless they miraculously come out with something excellent, then I will just spend my time listening to their old stuff.

I wouldn't argue with you on the adult contemporary front but over the years I've grown to like it. It's my least favorite album but there are a few good tracks on there IMO.

I still need to give the Trust Fall EP a fair listen. Shame we're not getting a "side B" to that (that's going to irk me), but hey, new album. Hope it's good. The 2011 album sounded like a band that had been around too long and no longer had any good ideas.

Anyone listen to the new album yet? Listening now. Certainly doesn't touch their best stuff, but I think it's decent. I need to give it a few full listens before I can draw any final conclusions. There have been a few really nice songs, but I haven't been paying close enough attention to note the titles.

The new one sucks less than if not now, then when, but it still is pretty lame. All of this really breaks my heart, because they used to be pretty incredible and now they just make average adult contemporary.

And stuff like "when I became a man" makes me cringe.

I didn't even know that a new album of theirs was even coming out, which really goes to show how much they have pushed me away and its a shame since they were at one time one of my favorite bands and extremely influential on me as a musician. Not no more

I honestly don't think "If Not Now" was a bad album, just different. I figured they wanted to try something a little different but I feel like they are starting to run out of ideas.

Whenever a new incubus album comes out, I evaluate it using the following method:

Step 1: Fairly listen to the new album all the way through with an open mind

Step 2: Immediately put on science and listen all the way through

Step 3: collect my tears in a measuring cup. and like golf, the less tears in the cup determines how sweet the new album is.

***The new album albums has some cool moments, but my measuring cup did have quite a bit of tears  :'(

Been listening to 8 much more lately since I snagged a good seat for them this Friday.  It's a bit better than I initially gave credit for, but it's still fairly poor.

Some song rankings for me:

Nimble Bastard
State of the Art
No Fun
--------- (the following songs are solid but nothing that good)
Familiar Faces
Glitterbomb
Throw Out the Map
--------- (the following songs are not at all interesting to me)
Loneliest
Make No Sound in the Digital Forest
Love in A Time of Surveilance (like the theme of these two songs but poor execution IMO)
When I Became A Man (is this a joke track? they seem to be playing it  :lol )
Undefeated (I kept turning the album off during this track, but finally got past it to at least enjoy Familiar Faces)

Anyway, their setlists so far look pretty solid though so I am excited to see them.... but the show is selling very poorly.  Sucks because this venue is one they frequent and is always packed for them.  Looks like that won't be the case this time.

So recently a family member recommended to me the song Drive to learn it and play at open mics because it apparently is right up my alley. And wow! I remember this song from when I was a kid! I ended up checking out the whole album and... how did I NOT listen to them before? Such a cool mix of everything 90s pretty much... some songs almost make me think it's close to being prog-grunge lol.

Yea, there's definitely something to them that makes them feel somewhat proggy/grungy I guess, but I think it's just more of some experimental sounds they use with their guitarist plus having an overall varied sound and style.

Yea, SCIENCE and Make Yourself are fantastic.  Not crazy about Morning View, it has it's good songs but it's too soft for me, not enough of an edge on it.  Crow Left of the Murder is a bit better but they really were never able to get back to those two albums that got them on the map.

Light Grenades, Trust Fall (Side A), and a crow left of the murder... are probably my three favorites by them. They form a trio to represent the more "experimental" side of the band imo. SCIENCE and Make Yourself are probably my next favorites, which make up the heavier side. Morning View and If Not Now, When? are both lighter but they're both good in their own right. If Not Now, When? is actually some really good soft alternative. I just tend to pretend that 8 doesn't exist.

8 starts off well and just really falls apart after the 4th song or so.  Plus that production is just terrible which is amazing for a band that has sounded so good before in the studio.

Science, Make Yourself and Morning View are the holy trinity for me, but I do enjoy Fungus Amongus, Crow, and Light Grenades. LG was the first Incubus album I bought on release day, so it's always had a special place in my heart. If Not Now, When? and 8 are just dog poo to me though. Sounds like a band that ran out of steam and are only still going for the money, but I don't know them, so I can be super wrong about that.

There is a song that didn't make it onto INNW? called "Rebel Girls" that I really enjoy. It was a bonus track on the HQ Live album. Always perplexed me that it wasn't on that record; it's easily the best thing from those sessions.

New single was leaked https://www.reddit.com/r/incubus/comments/ew8qwc/our_love_leak/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/incubus/comments/ew8qwc/our_love_leak/) and rumors of a may release of a new album.

meh, I don't know, might be a bit better than the last single Into the Summer, but this is just so far from being interesting.

The other very popular rumor (and I think its true) is Incubus and 311 doing a coheadline summer tour.  I'm definitely in for that, two bands I really enjoy even though both are fairly irrelevant these days.

My opinion of 8 has gone up since I made that post a year ago. Not the greatest record, but not as bad as I remember it being. Found myself actually legit enjoying a few of the songs on there.

LG is still a-okay in my book. A Kiss To Send Us Off, Anna Molly, Love Hurts, Pendulous Threads (one of my fav Incubus songs) and the Earth to Bella songs. I really like those songs, even though the other songs are kind of just there.

I'll buy tickets for the Gilford show.  Great combo.  I'll look into the 3rd band, Badflower.

I saw them a year or so ago Badflower - Heroin Live @ KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas LA 2018 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-6M0f0KIoE)

They are a newer rock band.  I'm not crazy about them personally, but it's not a bad opener.  My show is a weekday show, it'll be tough to make it in time for them so we'll see.

I'll check that out after work.  Thanks Marc!  Mine is a Sunday so we are actually planning our vacation that Monday so it would be a perfect start to it.

It's not shit, it's just different.

I always wonder, with Incubus especially, is my attachment to their early music is partly due to how I associate that music with great times in my life.

Honestly never thought I'd see the day. I thought they abandoned it after Side A. Cool to see them follow through.

I'll have to check it out. If it's like Side A or 8, I'm sure I'll find something to like off of it.

I think it's finally time to resign to the fact that the last good Incubus album was A Crow Left of the Murder and I shouldn't expect anything remotely close in quality in the future.  :sadpanda:

I think Crow was the last good album I really liked from start to finish. Light Grenades and If Not Now When had some pretty good tracks the but the overall albums were inconsistent.

I came to that conclusion the first time I heard If not now, when  :P

Light Grenades is a mixed bag with most of it being underwhelming, but there was still the hint that they could turn it back around. I don't even know what they are anymore.

So this concert from 1998 in Spain popped up on youtube... wow this is what I LOVE about the band.  These old school songs that are heavy and funky and interesting... plus the crowd constantly going on stage  :lol :metal

Just listened to Trust Fall Side B for the first time. Really not as bad as some of the comments on here led me to expect!

As much as I adore the original Incubus sound (as should be apparent enough by my choice of avatar!), I accept that they evolved over time into a different band. Not to say that either era is better or worse, because it's pretty much an apples and oranges situation.

But yeah, this is a really nice EP.  :tup

Big bump with the new tour announcement.

It turns out the Ben Kenny is stepping away from Incubus, if I were to guess it was due to the brain tumor removed: (https://loudwire.com/incubus-ben-kenney-brain-tumor-removed/).

Sad, I loved Ben Kenny in Incubus, he was an incredible musician and was a great matchup. Hope for a speedy recovery.

Yeah that sucks, but they needed to address the elephant in the room about him.  Sounds like his decision though so we can only wish for the best, sounds like he's recovered though which is the good news.

The new bassist was fine when I saw them last summer.

I realized I saw them at Madison Square Garden in 2004 so this summer would mark their return after 20 years.  I'm planning on being there for that, damn I'm getting old though.

They released the new re-recorded version of Echo.... not a fan.  I don't like the sound of this at all.  Adding the new bassists vocals to the chorus is OK, but just doesn't feel right.  The new outro is cool, that's how they did it live last year.

I agree, Brandon's vocals are also pretty weak on the new version. I'm still debating on whether or not I'll go to Florida to see morning view. Incubus one of my favorite bands of all times but when it comes to live they are the definition of hit or miss.

First thought is it sounds like crap. The production is so brickwalled. No dynamics. Way to ruin a classic album.

Also Brandon's vocals do not sound good anymore.

I really wish they had just done the ninth album. This rerecord is really showing how weak Brandon's voice has gotten compared to how it was in 2001.

They stated that the re-record was to gain control of their album similar to what Taylor Swift has done with her taylor's version albums, unfortunately I don't see anyone reaching for this re-record of Morning View

I didn't care much to begin with and these recordings just make it worse. WTF are they doing.

They are sacrificing pride and dignity for that.  I know it's not the first time a band will have tried to do such a thing.  I don't know about Taylor Swift, but I can relate to Catch 22 / Streetlight Manifesto doing this, and it doesn't work.  It's just too hard to replace an original classic that everyone's fallen in love with for many years at this point.

I read a comment somewhere (reddit I think), that I kind of agree with, is that they should've done a re-issue of morning view with an additional disc of the live version of the album they played in 2021, however that won't get them rights to their masters.

I flip-flop on these re-recordings. On one hand I think it's cool when a band reimagines their previous work in interesting ways but this isn't that, it feels lazier. The band has been aimless for the better part of a decade now and I don't have high hopes for whatever new tunes they bring out.
