Title: Emilie Autumn
Post by: Ravenheart on April 05, 2011, 12:50:59 AM
So now that I've created enough interest in her, it's time that there is a thread dedicated to the greatest artist that ever graced the planet.

Call her gothic. Call her industrial. Call her classical. Call her Victoriandustrial (her own name for it). Call her pop. Call her all of it. You'll be right every time.

She's a total wizard on the harpsichord and violin, and she's not bad to look at, either.

Frankly considering how much I love victorian/steampunk stuff I feel like I should like her more than I do; she's always just been someone I occasionally listen to and enjoy rather than someone I really like.

However, she's still good and she gets a lot of undeserved shit for having a lot of fans in the 'overweight nightmare before christmas hot topic teenage girl' demographic.

She's either really hot or she scares me enough that I'm too afraid to not say so.

But her music is awesome.

Lol.

It's not surprising, really. Some of her songs deal with her resentment of men's desire/attraction to her. Thank God I'm Pretty is the most obvious example.

As attractive as she is, I have a ton of respect for her as a person. She's been through a lot in her life, but she compose incredible music and always maintains a good sense of humor (onstage antics, etc). I do kind of hope people who enter this thread don't just go "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAWT" and then leave and never return.

tl;dr: Stop drooling and listen to some incredible music made by a woman with a troubled past.

Opheliac.

All of it.

Now.

Then try out her other albums. Her other "official studio album" is Enchant, which is a lot different than Opheliac, but it's still damn good.

Also, NEW ALBUM THIS FALL :caffeine:

She's okay. Got Opheliac a while back, and there were some cool things on it, but overall that girl does not know when to end a song.

It was including both discs. The first disc is the "real" album, the second is outtakes (though some of the songs are quite good), poems, and a Bach composition.

Um,

Opheliac
or Swallow
or Misery Loves Company

She's my favorite artist, so I'm a bit biased  :lol But out of those 3... probably Swallow. Yeah, Swallow.

Meh, it was ok. I didn't love it. I can see what LHK was saying about how she doesn't know when to end a song. The chorus was repeated way too much near the end. But it wasn't bad. Just not my cup of tea.

Listening to Ophiliac now.

I don't know how to feel to be honest. I like it because it's really different, but at the same time, some of the vocals/vocal effects are kind of off-putting.

"In meeee" part is fucking awesome though.

Actually, I kind of like this. It's drawing me in for some reason. But I think it's gonna take a few more listens before I really appreciate it.

Lol. I knew you'd semi-rage over that statement. Actually, I found that those crazy effects? on her voice on the first tune was pretty bad, but the next song (Swallow) was better. And the harpsichord intro to Opheliac was very good.

I must admit though, I lost interest after a few songs. I'll try give it another listen this weekend.

YES, DREW, YES.

10 songs? Hmm..

Opheliac
Shalott
Misery Leaves Company
Rose Red
Ever
My Fairweather Friend
I Don't Care Much
Castle Down
The Art of Suicide
Thank God I'm Pretty

I tried to make a good mix from several of her works, as opposed to just songs exclusive to Opheliac. Of course, I'm the EA fanboy 'round these parts, so take it for what it's worth ;)

Just gave her another try, and while a lot of Opheliac rubs me the wrong way, she does have more than her fair share of gems on there.

And the line in Opheliac "She speaks in the third person so she can forget that she is me" is fucking ace. I forgot how much that line hooked me the first time I'd heard it.

Awesome, guys :D

I think I might have mentioned this before, but Enchant sounds different, but it's still really good. Enchant is like that beautiful girl lost in some dark, mystical forest on an autumn night. Opheliac is that same beautiful girl, except she's being dragged into a mental institution after slashing her wrists.

She also has several EP's that contain covers, remixes, and b-sides. It's all awesome stuff. Laced/Unlaced is all instrumental violin work, both with covers and some originals of her own. It's beautiful.

I've only glanced at it. I haven't read the whole thing.

To be fair, there's a degree of truth to a lot of the stereotypes about her fans, if that's what you're referring to.

ED is down right now, so I'll have to wait until it's back up to make a fair judgment (lolopeth).

Emilie Autumn fans often insist they be called muffins. Because Emilie Autumn has called them that once or twice. She also likes to make it clear at all times that she suffers from bipolar disorder and is not responsible at all for herself. Her muffins got stirred into an outrage from an interview in Kerrang! which focused upon Emilie's mental disorders rather than her music. (Please note: On that day, not a fuck was given outside of the Asylum.)

...

Muffins of Emilie Autumn are usually pre-teens to teens, or at least seem to have that mentality. They are oh so gawfik and no one understands them, that's why the have to worship Emilie Autumn, because she is a Goddess, and give her their Suffering that she asks for in her music. Listening to an underground artist like Autumn makes them oh-so-cool and her using violins makes it classical and gawfik and unique, just like them. Muffins are also called "Plague Rats", a title they accept as readily as her bullshit Liddell history. They achieve this status by 'spreading the plague' of her music.

All Emilie Autumn muffins claim to be extremely insane and can often convince a handful of just as retarded people. Although most muffins don't know anything about their claimed form of insanity. They don't go for the pansy mental disorders either, fuck no, the crazier they are the bigger an Emilie Autumn muffin they are.

There are few exceptions to this rule of people who like Emilie Autumn's music and are actually mature and intelligent adults. However, they have been labeled to not be "true muffins" and are generally hated by the true muffins and are banned from Emilie Autumn's forum the moment they disagree with Emilie or a mod and show their lack of faith.

The Drama

It all began one day when...

Emilie Autumn decided to leave her recording company and go to The End records because the others were controlling and wanted her to go mainstream. On the move she re-re-re-released her second CD, Ophelliac.

Some people on the forum had the stupidity to go against Emilie's wishes and show less than total support. Of course, this caused Emilie to go into a RAAAAAGE. And she promptly put them down with harsh sarcasm and large words and questioning her worth to make them feel like the guilty and horrible people they were for questioning her motives.

A member on the forum known as 'CosetteAlice' told Emilie to clam down and have tea (Tea being the poison of choice in the Asylum, obviously). All hell broke lose as Emilie told the "fucking patronizing fucking" girl who dared to tell her what to do. Fans Muffins Plague Rats backed Emilie Autumn up and told the girl to GTFO because she wasn't a true fan. Thus began the banhammering of anyone who didn't and doesn't lick Emilie's sparkly pink boots.

LOL @ the encyclopedia dramatica article about her.

How much of this is actually true? I'm asking you. You know who you are.
I've only glanced at it. I haven't read the whole thing.

To be fair, there's a degree of truth to a lot of the stereotypes about her fans, if that's what you're referring to.

ED is down right now, so I'll have to wait until it's back up to make a fair judgment (lolopeth).

Ok, I have no idea about the forum drama, but I'm sure there is a little bit of truth to that (there usually is in ED articles).

As for all the fan nicknames.... yeah, those are all true. Obviously not every fan fits into those stereotypes. It's no different than the stereotypes of Dream Theater fans, heavy metal fans, prog rock fans, yadda yadda yadda.

and emilie is still the best artist ever and if you dont think so i am going to burn you and then piss on your ashes and rant about it in my pink diary

This is awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irtvqYURY7s&feature=player_embedded

Apparently her mic broke, so she performed the rest of the song instrumentally, with her violin mimicking the vocal harmonies. This was back in the Enchant era.

That's kind of what I was thinking  :lol But I hate thinking like that.

But she's acknowledged that her bipolar disorder and insomnia are good sources of inspiration to draw from. She tries to turn it into something positive so she's not just another victim of it.

I dunno man. She's attractive and all, but given her past, her identity as an asexual, and how guilty she tries to make men feel for being so sexual...I don't think I'd want to see nudes of her. It would just be weird.

The second disc of Opheliac is demos and stuff, correct? Is the quality pretty consistent with the main album, or is there a bit of a drop?

Eh, sort of. The Deluxe edition contains several new tracks - Dominant, 306, Asleep (live version of this appears on Girls Just Wanna Have Fun & Bohemian Rhapsody), an acoustic version of Mad Girl (live version is on the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun & Bohemian Rhapsody album, and the original is on the Liar/Dead is the New Alive EP), Thank God I'm Pretty, Gloomy Sunday, Miss Lucy Had Some Leeches, and Marry Me. All are really good, especially TGIP and Marry Me. There is also an excerpt from her spoken-word poetry album, which is How to Break a Heart. Then there's a recording of her reciting an excerpt from her book, as well as a pretty funny interview with herself that she made.

She does a cover of Bach's Largo, which also shows up on Laced/Unlaced.

It also has some takes on other songs, such as a shoegaze version of Thank God I'm Pretty and an acoustic version of The Art of Suicide.

The original release of Opheliac contains some of this, but not at all. The tracks found on the original release and not the deluxe edition can just be found on her other releases, so buy the deluxe edition.

It might not mean much coming from me, but I think it's all fantastic  :tup Hope this helps.

So yeah I checked out Opheliac a couple of weeks ago because Zander wouldn't shut the hell up about her music, and absolutely loved it right away! Such a diverse and exciting album, and her vocals are not just amazing but are great in a number of different styles and techniques. A really amazing musician.

So yeah, that's my favourite of hers, but I've been listening to Enchant as well, which is really nice, as well as a load of other songs (like the second disc of Opheliac and most of A Bit O' This And That) and she has just so much amazing stuff. <3

Yeah. It's damn expensive, that's for sure  :lol But the book itself is pretty thick and comes with all sort of little doo-dads, and she's singing all of the pre-orders, too. So FANBOY SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Still haven't had time to listen to any of her full albums yet.

Swallow is a great song though, but it could be shortened by three minutes or so. As was the case with most her songs. I totally agree with Zook on this.

Lee, have you listened to anything on Enchant? It's very different from Opheliac.

I've thought about it, but honestly, Opheliac didn't really do enough for me to make any action on that yet.

You might like it. It's, like, more piano-driven, with much more of a mystical, ethereal sound, as opposed to the insanity on Opheliac. Her voice is a little softer, and the music is more soothing.

If you do try it out and end up hating it, you're entitled to punch me in the face.

Yeah, she definitely should have shortened swallow a bit, the whole end section could kinda be left off. But who knows, my view could change with time, I originally thought Stargazers ending should have been shortened a bit, now its my favourite part of one of my favourite songs! :)

I don't understand what the plot of the video was supposed to be.  :lol And I'm kinda surprised she agreed to be in it in the first place since it is pretty ridiculous and not even really that "artistic".

But +1 for being aroused within my confusion.

But that would be awesome if you could. It's not too outside the realm of possibility, either. She's really into talking to her fans, which is cool.

She's working on the new album, and right now she's still trying to get all of the book pr-eorders out. She's also working with Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw, Repo) on what I think is a music video, either for a song from Opheliac or for the new album. Either way, I am excite.

Dude, legit, if I somehow do end up getting the interview, I can put you on the phone with her for a bit so you can talk to her. I wouldn't be listening to her anyways if it wasn't for you.

That's assuming I actually get an interview with her though. That's still a ways away, she could be really busy, and I might chicken out... so I don't wanna get your hopes up or anything.  :lol

Mad Girl is on the deluxe edition of Opheliac (2nd disc), which was released in 2009 so it could be accessible to more than just Europe. It's the acoustic version of the song.

There are actually a few versions of it floating around, the Liar & Dead is the New Alive EP has the original, and the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun & Bohemian Rhapsody EP has a live recording of it.

Have you heard Laced/Unlaced? It's all classical violin. Half the songs are covers of well-known classical pieces; the others are her own compositions. It's beautiful.

And yeah, I have yet to see her live, but definitely plan to on her next tour.

Lee, if I didn't love you in the most platonic way possible, I'd be furious.

Furious.

It's like reverse groupie-ism where you don't get to sleep with the band/act, but you get their fans instead. And I am ok with that.

IT WILL BE GLORIOUS and then we can go get victory smoothies afterwards to celebrate our manhood and stuff + slumber party + adventures + adventure time + ok

Oh and I still need to check out all of her albums, I'm just so transfixed on how amazing Opheliac is.

To be honest, I think seeing a show of her's might be a bit too much. I mean, I dig the music, but her regular fanbase can't be the most pleasent to deal with in a standing room only, cramped setting.

To be honest, I'm used to all kinds of weird fanbases. Most of the music I listen to is gloomy and depressing (Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and so on), so none of it really surprises me anymore  :lol

Best part is, as a 19-year-old NIN fan your hair is probably already dyed black, so we may not even need a wig.

Oh yeah, I figured this was worth posting. She posted it on twitter.

It's literally her on her roof singing the lyrics to the last song on FLAG into her phone. It's obviously not the finished product, but.... yeah.

https://www.emilieautumn.com/Secret_FLAG_Phone_Recording.m4a

Right now she's currently working with Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich on something (probably some kinda music video, either for an Opheliac song or a song from FLAG) in LA. I'm going to assume everyone on here is a nerdy pseudo-goth like me and knows who those 2 people are and has been following their projects since the beginning like I have.

Title: Re: Emilie Autumn
Post by: Ravenheart on August 07, 2011, 07:09:21 PM
I think she said it's sort of in the same vein as Opheliac, but it's also much heavier and more violent and "metal" (I don't think she meant actual metal, though). It sort of fits into the concept of what she defines as fighting like a girl, which is without mercy, code, or honor--just fighting to survive.

Enchant is significantly different than Opheliac, but it's still a fantastic album. She also has a lot of b-sides that show her trying out styles she didn't really explore with either album.

It was awesome. Great blend of a lot of shit without too much of it.

Great mix of classical, pop, industrial, metal, chickiness, etc.

Any more tilted to one side and it would suck, but the great thing is, it is at the perfect balance.

That's my view on it, too.

Enchant took me a couple of listens to appreciate because I was so accustomed to Opheliac's sound, but it's a great album all on its own. It incorporates ballads, acoustic, jazz, trip-hop, chamber music, new-age, space pop, and some sparse electronics. The piano is also incorporated a lot more.

I think Opheliac is neat, but she's a tad repetitive with some lines, which I don't really like. And there are a few spots here and there I don't quite enjoy throughout the album...

but overall it's pretty good.
I don't think I ever mentioned earlier on what I though of the album, so there ya go.

I love What If too!  Maybe this is just me, but the song always struck me as being almost a homage to "Silent All these Years" by Tori Amos.  Perhaps it's just the line "what if I'm a..." but they kind of have a similar melody and tone and deal with similar lyrical content, I think.  Both beautiful songs!

It's pretty funny to be rereading this four months later and how I was all "oh she's pretty good" when I wasn't too familiar with most of her stuff. It makes me sad to say she's one of the few artists I can think of where my opinion of them actually went down the more I paid attention to them.

Is her other album any different? Maybe that'll be worth checking out for me.
Title: Re: Emilie Autumn
Post by: Ravenheart on August 14, 2011, 02:20:19 AM
It's very different, yeah. It focuses more on organic instruments, like acoustic drums, more piano, and a more mystical and ethereal atmosphere. The differences between Enchant and Opheliac are very stark.

If it's worth anything at all coming from me (and it might not), I think Enchant is  a fantastic album.

Yeah, I think what separates her from a lot of other industrial artists is that she has choruses, hooks, and melodies that make her more pleasant to listen to for people who wouldn't normally like this style of music (plus, her other albums are pretty different). I like industrial music a lot, but even I have to admit it's not the most accessible style of music out there.

To be honest, I think this is the part that has the most to do with my distaste for it…I went through the “angry girl” phase, Hot Topic and morbid poetry and all. I eventually shed the Hot Topic shit, but the morbid poetry stayed behind…she reminds me of me too much, actually, and I think that’s a huge reason I don’t like her :lol

I used to write a lot of music during those times as well, and again—I swear I’m not trying to put myself up on a pedestal—her music reminds me of it. Not the technicality or talent, but the subject matter, the minor key tones, the lyrics. There was a time I loved anything that screamed “hate” and I guess I don’t want to go there now.

Like I said before, Cole showed her to me and I wasn’t “in the mood”…

Anyway. Now that you know my life story and all I’ll go back to listening to Devin Townsend with his comforting, meaningless lyrics.

Anyway. Now that you know my life story and all I’ll go back to listening to Devin Townsend with his comforting, meaningless lyrics.

You might try Enchant.  It's a lot less of angry, suicidal Emilie and more of classical, ethereal Emilie.

To be honest, I completely understand why people don't like Emilie Autumn. It's a really weird combination of music, and very uh... "angry girl" music.

Listening to it now... I love it. I think learning more about her made me warm up to her music as well.

Thanks guys! I love new music.
