So now that I've created enough interest in her, it's time that there is a thread dedicated to the greatest artist that ever graced the planet.
Call her gothic. Call her industrial. Call her classical. Call her Victoriandustrial (her own name for it). Call her pop. Call her all of it. You'll be right every time.
She's a total wizard on the harpsichord and violin, and she's not bad to look at, either.

-
First, and most important question: is she single?
-
Oh god, she's so amazing.
And sexy.
-
Brilliant, brilliant woman :heart
-
Frankly considering how much I love victorian/steampunk stuff I feel like I should like her more than I do; she's always just been someone I occasionally listen to and enjoy rather than someone I really like.
However, she's still good and she gets a lot of undeserved shit for having a lot of fans in the 'overweight nightmare before christmas hot topic teenage girl' demographic.
-
Looks hawt.
Have not heard the music.
-
She's either really hot or she scares me enough that I'm too afraid to not say so.
But her music is awesome.
-

Autumn identifies as an asexual.[46]
Wait.

Lol.
It's not surprising, really. Some of her songs deal with her resentment of men's desire/attraction to her. Thank God I'm Pretty is the most obvious example.
As attractive as she is, I have a ton of respect for her as a person. She's been through a lot in her life, but she compose incredible music and always maintains a good sense of humor (onstage antics, etc). I do kind of hope people who enter this thread don't just go "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAWT" and then leave and never return.
tl;dr: Stop drooling and listen to some incredible music made by a woman with a troubled past.
-
Swallow is a fucking amazing song. I can't stop listening to it.
-
Swallow is a fucking amazing song. I can't stop listening to it.
Just listened to it out of curiosity and it seems pretty cool, I'm gonna have to check her out properly now.
-
He other stuff is... a bit different.
-
Recommendations?
-
Recommendations?
Opheliac.
All of it.
Now.
Then try out her other albums. Her other "official studio album" is Enchant, which is a lot different than Opheliac, but it's still damn good.
Also, NEW ALBUM THIS FALL :caffeine:
-
She's okay. Got Opheliac a while back, and there were some cool things on it, but overall that girl does not know when to end a song.
-
According to Wikipedia, Opheliac is 85 minutes long?!
I haven't heard it, but just by reading that my initial reaction is ZzzZzzzZ. :\
-

It was including both discs. The first disc is the "real" album, the second is outtakes (though some of the songs are quite good), poems, and a Bach composition.

That makes perfect sense.

-
I checked her out on google images now. She creeps me out. Seriously.
-
I smell fail in this thread.
-
It's not me.
-
I honestly can't decide if I find her attractive or not.
Give me one song to listen to. The one song you would recommend to someone who had never heard of her up until now.
-

Um,
Opheliac
or Swallow
or Misery Loves Company
She's my favorite artist, so I'm a bit biased :lol But out of those 3... probably Swallow. Yeah, Swallow.
-
Meh, it was ok. I didn't love it. I can see what LHK was saying about how she doesn't know when to end a song. The chorus was repeated way too much near the end. But it wasn't bad. Just not my cup of tea.

Listening to Ophiliac now.
I don't know how to feel to be honest. I like it because it's really different, but at the same time, some of the vocals/vocal effects are kind of off-putting.
"In meeee" part is fucking awesome though.
Actually, I kind of like this. It's drawing me in for some reason. But I think it's gonna take a few more listens before I really appreciate it.
-
I am fucking in love with this chick right now.
-
I am fucking in love with this chick right now.
Me too, broseph.
-
Well, I just listened to Marry Me thanks to your Facebook link, and I liked it much more than Swallow.

I only listened to a coupla of her songs (I'll listen to more later, I promise!) and I'm quite liking her, her vocals are quite unusual and interesting.

Her vocals are very different, but I think they're awesome. They're operatic, yet not operatic at the same time.

HEY STFU YOU CAN ALL THANK SIGZ WHEN I NEVER POST HERE AGAIN JEEZ IM GONNA GO WRITE A POEM ABOUT THIS KBAI
-
So I decided I'm probably gonna order Opheliac when I get my tax return.
-
So I listened to a few songs of the Opheliac album. The first three. It was decent. Not mindblowing or anything. Just decent. :)

ITT: I rage over people not being as elated as I am.
-
Lol. I knew you'd semi-rage over that statement. Actually, I found that those crazy effects? on her voice on the first tune was pretty bad, but the next song (Swallow) was better. And the harpsichord intro to Opheliac was very good.
I must admit though, I lost interest after a few songs. I'll try give it another listen this weekend.
-
Ok so I listened to some more this afternoon and I'm totally converted. It's not a style I particularly like but something about the songs and her awesome voice has got me hooked

Thanks for introducing her to me, guys :D

I'm so glad she's catching on. I didn't have much like with Chiasm and Emilie Simon, but errrbody is loving Emilie Autumn so far.
She's mah fave :heart
Also, don't forget to check out her other stuff. It's all rearry, rearry good!!
-
Yup I'll definitely check it all out :)

Fo' real, guys, Laced/Unlaced is fucking gorgeous. She's such a talented violinist.

Emilie Autumn seems to be the next bandwagon-artist on this forum. :P
Controversial as I am, I must stand against it and be a loner.

Do you get off on having controversial opinions or something? :lol

I swear I think he does. :lol

OK, you fucksticks have converted me. I'm in love with her now. Give me a 10-song playlist to check out. Keeping in mind the only songs I'm familiar with at this point are "Swallow" and "Marry Me". But I've listened to both of them on repeat nonstop.
-

YES, DREW, YES.
10 songs? Hmm..
Opheliac
Shalott
Misery Leaves Company
Rose Red
Ever
My Fairweather Friend
I Don't Care Much
Castle Down
The Art of Suicide
Thank God I'm Pretty
I tried to make a good mix from several of her works, as opposed to just songs exclusive to Opheliac. Of course, I'm the EA fanboy 'round these parts, so take it for what it's worth ;)
-
Good shit man.
I just listened to Thank God I'm Pretty, and I love how darkly sarcastic it is.
-
Just gave her another try, and while a lot of Opheliac rubs me the wrong way, she does have more than her fair share of gems on there.
And the line in Opheliac "She speaks in the third person so she can forget that she is me" is fucking ace. I forgot how much that line hooked me the first time I'd heard it.
-
^ Yeah, that was one of the first lines that really stuck out to me.
I'm just in love with this woman in general. Really hard to tell, I know.
-
Yeah, that line is sick. I'm excited to start diving into her other work. :tup
-
Urg I'm completely addicted now!
-
Awesome, guys :D
I think I might have mentioned this before, but Enchant sounds different, but it's still really good. Enchant is like that beautiful girl lost in some dark, mystical forest on an autumn night. Opheliac is that same beautiful girl, except she's being dragged into a mental institution after slashing her wrists.
She also has several EP's that contain covers, remixes, and b-sides. It's all awesome stuff. Laced/Unlaced is all instrumental violin work, both with covers and some originals of her own. It's beautiful.
-
Haven't listened to her in years.
I really like the Laced/Unlaced album, specially the "Unlaced" part. Never got into her other albums although there were some songs that I liked a lot. I think they were Misery Leaves Company, Juliet and Swallow.
-
Hmm I think I'll try listen to her albums, so far I've just been clicking random songs on youtube
-
She's alright.
-
That's what I thought at first. Now I can't stop listening.
-
This Emilie Autumn love makes me a happy man.
Maybe I'll start plugging Emilie Simon more ;)
-

Yes plz. It's awesome, and it tends to (understandably) get overshadowed by Opheliac.
-
Well I just got her discography, and listened to a little bit of it.
It's... different. Not bad, just different. I'll have to spend more time listening to it

LOL @ the encyclopedia dramatica article about her.
How much of this is actually true? I'm asking you. You know who you are.
-
You're able to go to Encyclopedia Dramatica without getting viruses? Every time I go there, I'm barraged by so many popups that I can't even navigate away from the home page.
-
It's called NoScript. Basically, I get no pop-ups or anything. Basically just the text, so I can read for the lulz-´.
-
Copy and paste some of the funny parts for my amusement please.
-
LOL @ the encyclopedia dramatica article about her.
How much of this is actually true? I'm asking you. You know who you are.
I've only glanced at it. I haven't read the whole thing.
To be fair, there's a degree of truth to a lot of the stereotypes about her fans, if that's what you're referring to.
ED is down right now, so I'll have to wait until it's back up to make a fair judgment (lolopeth).

Emilie Autumn fans often insist they be called muffins. Because Emilie Autumn has called them that once or twice. She also likes to make it clear at all times that she suffers from bipolar disorder and is not responsible at all for herself. Her muffins got stirred into an outrage from an interview in Kerrang! which focused upon Emilie's mental disorders rather than her music. (Please note: On that day, not a fuck was given outside of the Asylum.)
...
Muffins of Emilie Autumn are usually pre-teens to teens, or at least seem to have that mentality. They are oh so gawfik and no one understands them, that's why the have to worship Emilie Autumn, because she is a Goddess, and give her their Suffering that she asks for in her music. Listening to an underground artist like Autumn makes them oh-so-cool and her using violins makes it classical and gawfik and unique, just like them. Muffins are also called "Plague Rats", a title they accept as readily as her bullshit Liddell history. They achieve this status by 'spreading the plague' of her music.
All Emilie Autumn muffins claim to be extremely insane and can often convince a handful of just as retarded people. Although most muffins don't know anything about their claimed form of insanity. They don't go for the pansy mental disorders either, fuck no, the crazier they are the bigger an Emilie Autumn muffin they are.
There are few exceptions to this rule of people who like Emilie Autumn's music and are actually mature and intelligent adults. However, they have been labeled to not be "true muffins" and are generally hated by the true muffins and are banned from Emilie Autumn's forum the moment they disagree with Emilie or a mod and show their lack of faith.
The Drama
It all began one day when...
Emilie Autumn decided to leave her recording company and go to The End records because the others were controlling and wanted her to go mainstream. On the move she re-re-re-released her second CD, Ophelliac.
Some people on the forum had the stupidity to go against Emilie's wishes and show less than total support. Of course, this caused Emilie to go into a RAAAAAGE. And she promptly put them down with harsh sarcasm and large words and questioning her worth to make them feel like the guilty and horrible people they were for questioning her motives.
A member on the forum known as 'CosetteAlice' told Emilie to clam down and have tea (Tea being the poison of choice in the Asylum, obviously). All hell broke lose as Emilie told the "fucking patronizing fucking" girl who dared to tell her what to do. Fans Muffins Plague Rats backed Emilie Autumn up and told the girl to GTFO because she wasn't a true fan. Thus began the banhammering of anyone who didn't and doesn't lick Emilie's sparkly pink boots.
LOL @ the encyclopedia dramatica article about her.

Ok, I have no idea about the forum drama, but I'm sure there is a little bit of truth to that (there usually is in ED articles).
As for all the fan nicknames.... yeah, those are all true. Obviously not every fan fits into those stereotypes. It's no different than the stereotypes of Dream Theater fans, heavy metal fans, prog rock fans, yadda yadda yadda.
and emilie is still the best artist ever and if you dont think so i am going to burn you and then piss on your ashes and rant about it in my pink diary

Gonna check more songs out, but not bad. :tup

Laced/Unlaced is decent so far. Not sure how well I'll fair with vocals though.
-
This is awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irtvqYURY7s&feature=player_embedded
Apparently her mic broke, so she performed the rest of the song instrumentally, with her violin mimicking the vocal harmonies. This was back in the Enchant era.

Opheliac is a great album. It was all I listened to 3 summers ago, iirc. It's also really fun showing Marry Me to people.

Bad for her, good for us. As heartless as that sounds...
That's kind of what I was thinking :lol But I hate thinking like that.
But she's acknowledged that her bipolar disorder and insomnia are good sources of inspiration to draw from. She tries to turn it into something positive so she's not just another victim of it.
-
Bad for her, good for us. As heartless as that sounds...
I read this before ravenheart's post and I was REALLLLLY hoping it was gonna be about nudes.
:sadpanda:
-
I dunno man. She's attractive and all, but given her past, her identity as an asexual, and how guilty she tries to make men feel for being so sexual...I don't think I'd want to see nudes of her. It would just be weird.
-
Not to mention, she was raped at a very young age :P
-
That's what I meant by "her past." I just didn't want to say it.
-
I don't know how to reply to that without sounding like an asshole. :lol But, honestly, I don't think her being raped would really affect my perception of her at all.
-
Nah, it's cool. I'll always think Emilie is drop-dead gorgeous, but I have a ton of respect and admiration for her.
-

Wordz. Not trying to turn her into a sex object or anything, but honestly that was just the first thing that came to mind when I saw Drew's post. It reminded me of the Paramore thread when those pics of Hayley leaked. :lol
BUT BACK ON TOPIC I still have not bought Opheliac but I really want to, and it will be one of my first purchases once I get a job in a couple of weeks.

Oh yeah Mike, I wasn't trying to paint a picture of you as an insensitive dick or anything. I was just throwing out my own opinion.

The second disc of Opheliac is demos and stuff, correct? Is the quality pretty consistent with the main album, or is there a bit of a drop?

Eh, sort of. The Deluxe edition contains several new tracks - Dominant, 306, Asleep (live version of this appears on Girls Just Wanna Have Fun & Bohemian Rhapsody), an acoustic version of Mad Girl (live version is on the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun & Bohemian Rhapsody album, and the original is on the Liar/Dead is the New Alive EP), Thank God I'm Pretty, Gloomy Sunday, Miss Lucy Had Some Leeches, and Marry Me. All are really good, especially TGIP and Marry Me. There is also an excerpt from her spoken-word poetry album, which is How to Break a Heart. Then there's a recording of her reciting an excerpt from her book, as well as a pretty funny interview with herself that she made.
She does a cover of Bach's Largo, which also shows up on Laced/Unlaced.
It also has some takes on other songs, such as a shoegaze version of Thank God I'm Pretty and an acoustic version of The Art of Suicide.
The original release of Opheliac contains some of this, but not at all. The tracks found on the original release and not the deluxe edition can just be found on her other releases, so buy the deluxe edition.
It might not mean much coming from me, but I think it's all fantastic :tup Hope this helps.

The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls. It's an autobiography that deals with her time spent in the asylum after her suicide attempt. Great read for the kids.

I was a bit underwhelmed after all the hype too I never bothered to listen to her again.
And this page is hilarious :D
-
That's cool, I guess.
But seriously, she isn't even good.
Yeah, she can't play the violin or piano to save her life.
-
She's really ugly too. Like, I don't find anything about her attractive at all.
Oh and she is like one of the most unoriginal composers I have ever heard. I hear that kind of stuff all of the time on the radio
etc etc etc

Same here.

Totes agree with you guys.

So yeah I checked out Opheliac a couple of weeks ago because Zander wouldn't shut the hell up about her music, and absolutely loved it right away! Such a diverse and exciting album, and her vocals are not just amazing but are great in a number of different styles and techniques. A really amazing musician.
So yeah, that's my favourite of hers, but I've been listening to Enchant as well, which is really nice, as well as a load of other songs (like the second disc of Opheliac and most of A Bit O' This And That) and she has just so much amazing stuff. <3
-
Which songs would you recommend to try her out again? I youtubed a few songs and couldn't really get into them that much.

:heart

Which ones did you listen to?
I usually recommend Swallow, The Art of Suicide, Marry Me, 4 O'Clock, or Willow (the vocal version).
-
I haven't listened to any of those I think. I listened to Thank God I'm pretty (really chilling lyrics and the music was pretty good, but I haven't had the urge to listen to it again) and a couple others which I can't remember atm.
I'll give those a shot, thanks :)
-
I would just ignore the "hype" I've generated (which honestly isn't even that much, especially when compared to other threads in this section of the forum) and judge it on its own merits.

Ok, will do :tup

Damn right.

EDIT: Swallow was ok, but everything else was meh.
My main problem with Swallow, and most everything else I've heard by EA, is that it could easily be shortened by a minute or so and make a much stronger song.
-
Lee, have you listened to anything on Enchant? It's very different from Opheliac.
-
DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE
I'VE GOT TOO MUCH TO FUCKING LOSE
I think God Help Me might be my favorite on the album.

I love the frantic piano + harpsichord on that one :)

I love Queen, and I am super critical of anyone that covers them, but I have to say this might be the only time where I approve of a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. That was excellent!
-
The electric violin solo in her cover is most excellent.
-
Zander, did you order the reissue of her book? I just went to check, and it's $75... the packaging looks awesome but I don't think I'm big enough of a fan yet/have the money to get it sadly. :lol
-

Yeah. It's damn expensive, that's for sure :lol But the book itself is pretty thick and comes with all sort of little doo-dads, and she's singing all of the pre-orders, too. So FANBOY SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Knowing me, though, I probably filled in something wrong and the book won't arrive, or I ordered it too late for a signed copy :P BUT I CAN HOPE.
-
If I get a job and they still have copies available, I'm going to order it and when it gets here I will love and cherish it and go to sleep with the book every night pretending that Emilie Autumn somehow transferred her awesomeness into the book until one day i forget it is just a book and I start to believe that it is actually Emilie AND WE WILL GET MARRIED AND HAVE KIDS AND MOVE FAR AWAY FROM THIS FUCKING PLACE AND MOVE TO THE MOON OF ENDOR OR SOME OTHER PLACE WITH A NICE MILD CLIMATE PLENTY OF TREES AND ATLEAST
ok maybe this is why i dont have a job in the first place

In time. In time.
-
Still haven't had time to listen to any of her full albums yet.
Swallow is a great song though, but it could be shortened by three minutes or so. As was the case with most her songs. I totally agree with Zook on this.
-
Swallow was the only time where I felt like that applied, honestly. And it's still a good song.
-
Wait, people actually like Swallow? I mean, I like a decent amount of her stuff, but that song is absolutely cringe worthy.
-
Oh, come on.
COME AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNN.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this.
-
Wait, people actually like Swallow? I mean, I like a decent amount of her stuff, but that song is absolutely cringe worthy.
Why are you always WRONG
-
No, I agree with Sigz. Swallow is pretty bad. It drags on and on and on and on
and on
and on
and
on
-
I've never actually noticed the length, mainly because I start uncontrollably vomiting three seconds into the song.
-
Swallow is a good song.
-
Swallow is the only song I've heard this far, but it's good.
-
Swallow is nice, but it really Swallows the cock of being dragged out too long

Maybe you should have tried...

Lee, have you listened to anything on Enchant? It's very different from Opheliac.
I've thought about it, but honestly, Opheliac didn't really do enough for me to make any action on that yet.
-

I've thought about it, but honestly, Opheliac didn't really do enough for me to make any action on that yet.
You might like it. It's, like, more piano-driven, with much more of a mystical, ethereal sound, as opposed to the insanity on Opheliac. Her voice is a little softer, and the music is more soothing.
If you do try it out and end up hating it, you're entitled to punch me in the face.
-
Maybe I'll Groove Shark it one day, but for now I have Bond and Jack Off Jill. I'm doing alright on my pretty/angry chick music.
-
Yeah, she definitely should have shortened swallow a bit, the whole end section could kinda be left off. But who knows, my view could change with time, I originally thought Stargazers ending should have been shortened a bit, now its my favourite part of one of my favourite songs! :)
-
My ex always wanted me to listen to Emilie Autumn when we were dating, but I didn't listen. Such a mistake. She's so awesome.

So I just stumbled across the Born Again video and
wtf?
-
At first I thought you meant the Lady Gaga song, but then I remembered the video by Die Warzau. Yeah, I was confused and slightly aroused by that video, too.
Edit: And yes I realized I was confusing Born this Way with Born Again so DON'T BOTHER MENTIONING THAT.
-
I don't understand what the plot of the video was supposed to be. :lol And I'm kinda surprised she agreed to be in it in the first place since it is pretty ridiculous and not even really that "artistic".
But +1 for being aroused within my confusion.
-
Me neither :lol I don't think anyone did. The video I watched had such awful audio quality that I didn't even understand what the song was about.
Hopefully she got a decent paycheck for it, though.
-
Holy crap, she covered Bohemian Rhapsody???

There's a pretty sweet live version too

Oh God, if you meet her before I do.... :lol
But that would be awesome if you could. It's not too outside the realm of possibility, either. She's really into talking to her fans, which is cool.
She's working on the new album, and right now she's still trying to get all of the book pr-eorders out. She's also working with Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw, Repo) on what I think is a music video, either for a song from Opheliac or for the new album. Either way, I am excite.

Dude, legit, if I somehow do end up getting the interview, I can put you on the phone with her for a bit so you can talk to her. I wouldn't be listening to her anyways if it wasn't for you.
That's assuming I actually get an interview with her though. That's still a ways away, she could be really busy, and I might chicken out... so I don't wanna get your hopes up or anything. :lol

Oh, I know :lol It's something to think about, though.

I just listened to all of Opheliac and this album has amazing promise. Opheliac, Swallow, Liar, Misery Loves Company, God Help Me, Gothic Lolita, Dead is the New Alive, Let the Record Show, all cool songs.
As for the bonus disk, I only dug Marry Me, but I dig it a lot. Also, I really hope Thank God I'm Pretty is tongue in cheek or a cut on men, because if not, she's a bitch. :lol

Thank God I'm Pretty is my favorite. And yes, I'm almost positive its not meant to be taken seriously.
The harmonies at the end of that song DAMN GIRL YOU SO FINE

Absolutely not, haha, it's a total bash on how appearance-based society is and it's very rich with irony. Really well written lyrics, if you ask me.
Also cool to see you enjoying her. The man upstairs (Zander) will be proud.

Funny that my least favorites are near the top of your list. :P
It's a song on the bonus cd of the deluxe edition. It's the only one I really don't care for on the CD
-
Mad Girl is on the deluxe edition of Opheliac (2nd disc), which was released in 2009 so it could be accessible to more than just Europe. It's the acoustic version of the song.
There are actually a few versions of it floating around, the Liar & Dead is the New Alive EP has the original, and the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun & Bohemian Rhapsody EP has a live recording of it.
-
Didn't know there were other versions of the song! Will definitely have to check them out

Funny that my least favorites are near the top of your list. :P
I noticed that as well, but that just goes to show that there is more than one reason to dig it, because I bet that what I look for in it is probably different than what you look for it.

Also, do you guys like how I described Emilie in the controversial thread? :lol
Britney Spears? Seriously?
:puke:

If you eliminate the lyrics and industrial and victorian aspects of it, which is pretty much what makes it awesome, she does have somewhat of a poppy female voice.
Oh, and nice job quoting. :P

Britney Spears?

Looking through the tracklist, Opheliac and Misery Loves Company are the only ones I really dug at all. Swallow and Liar both made me throw up, Art of Suicide and Innocence weren't bad, and I don't remember any of the others well enough to say.

Well, the songs off Opheliac you guys recommended were quite tasty, despite my usual non-attraction to synth-pop-ish stuff.
Does she have any work that's more alt-rock oriented?

It's radically different from Opheliac, but no less fantastic. I highly recommend it.

It's considerably less fantastic.
But it's still a very nice album. Just not nearly as exciting or unique.
In my opinion.

-
I think I'm so attracted to Emilie Autumn because of the violin, it's amazing. Enchant was the first album I heard, absolutely gorgeous <3
And some of her lyrics are so funny, I have a special place in my heart for Thank God I'm Pretty :')
-
She's a wizard on the violin. I wish she'd make more use of it live. Oh well. She still plays Face the Wall regularly and makes decent use of the harpsichord.
-
I'm just a complete sucker for strings, the fact that she plays it so well means that I would be content listening to an album of just instrumentals.
I haven't seen her live, I was going to go with my friend last year but it fell through :(
-
Have you heard Laced/Unlaced? It's all classical violin. Half the songs are covers of well-known classical pieces; the others are her own compositions. It's beautiful.
And yeah, I have yet to see her live, but definitely plan to on her next tour.
-
I've only heard one of them, I'll have to check it out ^^
I also need to get the EP that has 4 O' Clock on, it's one of my favourite songs of hers.
-
Yeah, I recommend it.
The 4 O'Clock EP is great. It also has My Fairweather Friend, a song titled Untitled, Organ Grinder, and a few remixes. All good stuff.
-
I really love her music, but to be honest I'm not the hugest fan of the live shows, basing them off the youtube videos. It's pretty cool, don't get me wrong, but theatrics aren't my thing.
Still, the moment she announces a live tour I will be buying tickets. I will probably be one of the few males there over 20 in a sea of emotional crying girls, BUT I WILL ENJOY EVERY SECOND OF IT

It's like reverse groupie-ism where you don't get to sleep with the band/act, but you get their fans instead. And I am ok with that.
IT WILL BE GLORIOUS and then we can go get victory smoothies afterwards to celebrate our manhood and stuff + slumber party + adventures + adventure time + ok
Oh and I still need to check out all of her albums, I'm just so transfixed on how amazing Opheliac is.
-
To be honest, I think seeing a show of her's might be a bit too much. I mean, I dig the music, but her regular fanbase can't be the most pleasent to deal with in a standing room only, cramped setting.

To be honest, I'm used to all kinds of weird fanbases. Most of the music I listen to is gloomy and depressing (Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and so on), so none of it really surprises me anymore :lol

It's not dyed black, but it's a pretty unique hairstyle. Just ask anyone on the board.

A few years ago and you would've been spot on.
-
Oh yeah, I figured this was worth posting. She posted it on twitter.
It's literally her on her roof singing the lyrics to the last song on FLAG into her phone. It's obviously not the finished product, but.... yeah.
https://www.emilieautumn.com/Secret_FLAG_Phone_Recording.m4a
Right now she's currently working with Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich on something (probably some kinda music video, either for an Opheliac song or a song from FLAG) in LA. I'm going to assume everyone on here is a nerdy pseudo-goth like me and knows who those 2 people are and has been following their projects since the beginning like I have.
-
I'm not a nerdy pseudo-goth, nor do I know who those two guys are, but YAY NEW MUSIC COMING SOONISH!!!
-
I'm looking forward to this if it is like Opheliac. I haven't really listened to her first album.
-
I think she said it's sort of in the same vein as Opheliac, but it's also much heavier and more violent and "metal" (I don't think she meant actual metal, though). It sort of fits into the concept of what she defines as fighting like a girl, which is without mercy, code, or honor--just fighting to survive.
Enchant is significantly different than Opheliac, but it's still a fantastic album. She also has a lot of b-sides that show her trying out styles she didn't really explore with either album.
-
More metal is fine with me. :metal
-
Holy shit Cole liked Opheliac? Awesome.
-
Yeah, I was surprised, too :lol
-
It was awesome. Great blend of a lot of shit without too much of it.
Great mix of classical, pop, industrial, metal, chickiness, etc.
Any more tilted to one side and it would suck, but the great thing is, it is at the perfect balance.
-
That's my view on it, too.
Enchant took me a couple of listens to appreciate because I was so accustomed to Opheliac's sound, but it's a great album all on its own. It incorporates ballads, acoustic, jazz, trip-hop, chamber music, new-age, space pop, and some sparse electronics. The piano is also incorporated a lot more.
-
I just went on Emilie Autumn's FB page...
-
I think Opheliac is neat, but she's a tad repetitive with some lines, which I don't really like. And there are a few spots here and there I don't quite enjoy throughout the album...
but overall it's pretty good.
I don't think I ever mentioned earlier on what I though of the album, so there ya go.

Same. Why is it mirrored though?
-
"What if" is an awesome song, I think its my favourite by her. The piano is great, as is the violin, and her voice sounds very nice.
-
What If is beautiful, and probably in my top 5 songs by her. Good choice :tup

I love What If too! Maybe this is just me, but the song always struck me as being almost a homage to "Silent All these Years" by Tori Amos. Perhaps it's just the line "what if I'm a..." but they kind of have a similar melody and tone and deal with similar lyrical content, I think. Both beautiful songs!

I think so, too, for those same reasons. It seems safe to say the influence is there, but both songs stand on their own as fantastic :tup
-
I took a listen to that Tori Amos song. Obviously hard to say anything on first listen but I thought it was very good. I can see a slight similarity there.
-
So shes gonna be playing some FLAG songs during her Australia shows, according to Twitter. :caffeine:
-
Awesome. They'll be on Youtube in no time in some fashion :dangerwillrobinson:
I'd like to think that the album will be completed by the time those tour dates roll around.

I was an Emilie Autumn fan since the days she answered to Majesty.

I've been a fan since her name was Chris Collins.
Also, my copy of her book arrived. WOOOOOO.

Earlier today I was browsing Youtube, watching some videos of her performances and I'm really regreting not seeing her last year when she played over here.

HATE YOU SO MUCH
I really wanna buy it, but its like 100 dollars and I don't know if I'm big enough of a fan for it. :lol Still, when you finish it YOU MUST TELL ME ABOUT IT

Zander wishes he were half the fan I am.

I WILL. You'll be the first to know :D
Zander wishes he were half the fan I am.
I will demolish you.

I had Emilie's book two months before release, signed by her in lipstick.

Hot. Keep your pants on while I set up the camera.

Drew, you can't just calculate art like this by stalling it for the sake of capturing it on film.

You can never film a Giant Indie™. They must be the only ones to see it to maintain their rank.

It'll only take a few seconds.
Then again, that's probably how long it will take you as well, so....

I have no comeback for that one. You win.

Having an Opheliac day today. Hard to pick a favourite, but there are no songs I dislike. Great album, shoulda listened to my ex and got into it earlier. :lol
-
Glad you like it :tup
-
Frankly considering how much I love victorian/steampunk stuff I feel like I should like her more than I do; she's always just been someone I occasionally listen to and enjoy rather than someone I really like.
However, she's still good and she gets a lot of undeserved shit for having a lot of fans in the 'overweight nightmare before christmas hot topic teenage girl' demographic.
It's pretty funny to be rereading this four months later and how I was all "oh she's pretty good" when I wasn't too familiar with most of her stuff. It makes me sad to say she's one of the few artists I can think of where my opinion of them actually went down the more I paid attention to them.
Is her other album any different? Maybe that'll be worth checking out for me.
-
It's very different, yeah. It focuses more on organic instruments, like acoustic drums, more piano, and a more mystical and ethereal atmosphere. The differences between Enchant and Opheliac are very stark.
If it's worth anything at all coming from me (and it might not), I think Enchant is a fantastic album.
-
I much prefer Enchant actually. Opheliac is good but I definitely prefer the more organic instruments like you said.
-
Will finally check out Enchant this week since I've listened to Opheliac to death.

Dunno if it's worth anything actually, are you a fan of her music?

Eh, she's ok.

Then your opinion is ok.

Yes. YES YES YES

Listening to EA's version of Bohemian Rhapsody, definitely one of the more solid covers I've heard of it.
Too bad its not the truest form of the song.

:lol

:lol :lol

So I listened to Opheliac in its entirety.
I love her now.

I remember when you popped my Emilie Autumn cherry.
It was a lot more enjoyable than losing my virginity, that's for sure.

I'm really loving "Across the Sky"! Its probably my second favourite EA song (after "What If"). Its got an amazing sense of mysticism which I love. The "Should we hear the silence" bit is spine-tingling! What are your guys thoughts on this song?
-
The lyrics to I Know Where You Sleep were in my ex's status so I just had to listen to Opheliac again. It's even better than before. Funny cause this is usually not my kind of music at all, but this stuff is great.

Across the Sky is beautiful. It's so ethereal, and it really sets the tone for the rest of the album. :tup

Yeah, I think what separates her from a lot of other industrial artists is that she has choruses, hooks, and melodies that make her more pleasant to listen to for people who wouldn't normally like this style of music (plus, her other albums are pretty different). I like industrial music a lot, but even I have to admit it's not the most accessible style of music out there.

Cole has tried to get me into this chick a handful of times, and I always responded badly...tbh, probably because I wasn't in the mood. I just listened to Swallow to see if it's worth it and...
...I really thought it was boring.
I'm not trying to troll here, but why is it supposedly "better" than her other stuff?
-
Swallow is not her best song by far. Listen to Dead is the New Alive, Misery Loves Company, or Gothic Lolita.

Add Opheliac to that too ;)
-
She hated that song.
-
WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE EVERYTHING I LOVE
-
Because you suck.
-
She hated that song.
Boo that's one of my favourites.
I have to say though, I've kinda cooled down a lot on her, I really loved her when I first started listening but now I'm not all that fussed. Still like her though, so don't freak out Zander :P
-
So far, my fav song is probably The Art of Suicide.
-
I FEEL LIKE I'M LISTENING TO EVANESCENCE
Where's the good violin stuff? I might like that.
(I just keep remembering that I loathed Devin Townsend in the beginning and a single song converted me, so I'm not giving up.)

Sorry mang. At least it's better than what I called Devy. Toadshit, I beleive?
-
I've been listening to Enchant today.
It's really different compared to Opheliac - but I really like it too.
-
To be honest, I completely understand why people don't like Emilie Autumn. It's a really weird combination of music, and very uh... "angry girl" music.
But those same reasons are why I enjoy it, so each to their own. I listened to Opheliac so much that I also have kind of cooled down on her, but I still have her other albums to check out. ;D

To be honest, I think this is the part that has the most to do with my distaste for it…I went through the “angry girl” phase, Hot Topic and morbid poetry and all. I eventually shed the Hot Topic shit, but the morbid poetry stayed behind…she reminds me of me too much, actually, and I think that’s a huge reason I don’t like her :lol
I used to write a lot of music during those times as well, and again—I swear I’m not trying to put myself up on a pedestal—her music reminds me of it. Not the technicality or talent, but the subject matter, the minor key tones, the lyrics. There was a time I loved anything that screamed “hate” and I guess I don’t want to go there now.
Like I said before, Cole showed her to me and I wasn’t “in the mood”…
Anyway. Now that you know my life story and all I’ll go back to listening to Devin Townsend with his comforting, meaningless lyrics.
-
I made a playlist of this stuff today and found that I like two songs of hers so fa: the Art of Suicide and Misery Loves Company.
Swallow is slowly growing on me as well. Nothing has made me go "WOW" but she's not bad.

Yeah, I actually think I'm really liking this chick...huh. :)

You might try Enchant. It's a lot less of angry, suicidal Emilie and more of classical, ethereal Emilie.

Thanks guys! I love new music.
