Title: In Retrospect: Album of the Year 2000 poll
Post by: Dr. DTVT on March 21, 2011, 12:56:42 PM
One of the frustrating things about doing the Album of the Year immediately the following year is that even though I think I do a good job keeping up with new music, sometimes new bands slip by or I don't have the money to buy albums immediately.  What I'd like to do is do an album of the year for past years.  It will be run slightly different than the way Nick does it, but each year will consist of three rounds.  I'll start with 2000 and work up to 2010, and if its popular enough, I'll work backwards from 1999.

The first round is the nomination round.  You don't have to rank them, and ranking them won't give your top album more points.  Simply list your five favorite albums released in 2000.  The 10 albums that get the most nominations move on to the next round, so don't pass over an album just because someone else nominated it.  Nomination cut off will be Monday night approx 9 pm EDT.

DTVT's albums:

Transatlantic - SMPTe
Spock's Beard - V
Pain of Salvation - TPE Pt. 1
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Enchant - Juggling 9 or Dropping 10

This is a great idea!  That is so true that some albums you might not hear until years later, not to mention that some albums age really well and some do not.  Anyway, my top five:

The Flower Kings - Space Revolver
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Radiohead - Kid A
Transatlantic - SMPTe

Pretty much what Kev said.
I also agree with Kev on these:

*Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
*Radiohead - Kid A
*Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

I'll also add:

*Ulver - Perdition City
*Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

Fixed so its only 5.

Lightbulb Sun wins forever.  Next year, please.

EDIT: here are some others, I guess.

Radiohead-Kid A
Spock's Beard-V
Iron Maiden-Brave New World

Don't really have anything else from that year, I think.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

Ulver - Perdition City
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Radiohead - Kid A

Some that just barely missed making my list: PJ Harvey's Is This Desire?, Elliott Smith's Figure 8, A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms, and Deftones' White Pony.

Spock's Beard - V

I hated having to leave that off of my list, but I like all of the ones I listed better, so it barely missed the cut.

2000 also saw really good albums by Kansas, Death Cab, Ayreon, Isis, No-Man, King Crimson, Ozric Tentacles, U2, etc.

Radiohead - Kid A
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven

The only two choices really, in terms of cultural impact and generally deserving the title, as much as I love LBS and Perdition City.

Yeah, I'm hoping it goes to one of those, they deserve it the most, but it's going to go to Lightbulb Sun without question :lol

I feel like for this kind of thing you have to pick an album that really defined the year it came out in. Yeah, Perdition City and LBS are amazing albums, but Kid A and Lift Your Skinny Fists just define 2000 so much more in my eyes. It's the reason that Kid A would top, or come near the top of, my album of the decade list, despite not being in my top 10 personal favourites.

Radiohead - Kid A (best of decade perhaps?)
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Doves - Lost Souls
Coldplay - Parachutes

Not a great year apart from the first 2 for me.

Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP

JP and JR - An Evening with

These albums missed out
APC - Mer De Noms
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Madonna - Music
RATM - Renegades

One of the frustrating things about doing the Album of the Year immediately the following year is that even though I think I do a good job keeping up with new music, sometimes new bands slip by or I don't have the money to buy albums immediately.
While I know what you mean, here is the list of albums I plan to check out from 2000 and haven't done so, many of which, from what I've heard of them, could be good enough to make that top 5:

BB King/Eric Clapton - Riding with the King
Deftones - White Pony
Explosions in the Sky - How Strange, Innocence
Joe Satriani - Engines of Creation
King Crimson - The ConstruKction of Light
Sunn O))) - OO Void
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Outbound
Wyclef Jean - Ecleftic
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
At the Drive In - Relationship of Command
Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man
PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
Outkast - Stankonia
POS - The Perfect Element Pt 1

DTVT,
Just wondering, the EotY Poll Nick runs, allows everyone to nominate not 5, but 10 albums. Is there a reason why these polls are limited to just 5?

only 35 proper all-new studio albums in my collection; either 2000 was a really thin year for music, or I have a lot of cataloging left to do for that year.

Ayreon - Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer
Ayreon - Universal Migrator Part 2: Flight of the Migrator

I was gonna pay my car note until I got high
I was gonna gamble on the boat but then I got high
now the tow truck is pulling away and I know why
- because I got high [repeat 3X]

I was gonna make love to you but then I got high
I was gonna eat yo pussy too but then I got high
now I'm jacking off and I know why
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]

I messed up my entire life because I got high
I lost my kids and wife because I got high
now I'm sleeping on the sidewalk and I know why
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]

I'm gonna stop singing this song because I'm high
I'm singing this whole thing wrong because I'm high
and if I dont sell one copy I know why
- cause I'm high [repeat 3X]

Fucking lol.

I'd probably say Kid A though. I really need to check out Lift Your Skinny Fists...I'm going to now.

Symphony X - V
Nightwish - Wishmaster

Wow, this was a slow year.

I'm sorry but I have to respectfully disagree with you big time here. Those albums weren't that good (in my opinion of course) while there were much better albums that came out that you didn't mention here.

Some examples.

Presidents of the United States of America - Lump

I can't tell if you're being serious but Lump came out in '95... their album in '00 was Freaked Out and Small. In any case, it was better than Symphony X :lol

Ah, shit. :lol Yeah I remember that song. I heard it a lot on the radio back in 2001. I was in the 5th grade but I had a basic understanding what "getting high" was about. I saw Friday and Next Friday at that age. :hat

I really need to check out Lift Your Skinny Fists...I'm going to now.
You may as well, yeah. I know a couple of guys that highly recommend it. :tup

Edguy - The Savage Poetry

Among others, of course

Agreed.  Also, a few others

Demons & Wizards - Demons & Wizards (fantastic debut)
Napalm Death - Enemy of the Music Business
Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory

Still waiting for someone to mention those "better" albums...

just looked back thru the posts. see now that reinventing the steel was mentioned before i stormed in, tripping out.

anywayz, i think i got mine:

pain of salvation - the perfect element
spiral architect - a sceptic's universe
spock's beard - V
symphony x - V: the new mythology suite
transatlantic - SMPTe

a perfect circle, bozzio levin stevens, CAB, fates warning, greg bissonette, nevermore, pantera, planet x, platypus, and radiohead in a 10 way tie for 6th place, cuz picking a top 5 turned out to be way easier than picking a top 10.

also: the smashing pumpkins were hit n miss that year, but i really like half the tracks.
tool's salival was damn good, but it didn't feel right for the list.
i still haven't fully embraced lightbulb sun, but it's coming (only ever checked out the album in the past 2 years).
i could see getting way into the ozric tentacles album from that year (or any year), but i haven't spun it yet.

But, anyway, the three albums you mentioned are very good. In fact, that's a great list if those are your top 3 from that year. My only issue is the "slow year" comment. Was it slow because you didn't like anything else, or was it slow because you didn't listen to much else?

I'm not blaming you for not purchasing every new album to come out every year, BTW. That shouldn't  be expected.

Funny, I recently started looking through my music library to try to make Top 10 Album of the Year lists for every year since 2000. So far I've finished 2000-2003, 2007, and 2010. Once I finish, I was actually thinking about starting a thread about it.

But anyway, my Top 5 for 2000:
1) Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element, Part 1
2) Transatlantic - SMPT:e
3) Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
4) Spock's Beard - V
5) The Flower Kings - Space Revolver

I've never heard of Ulver but with so many mentions here I'm going to have to check them out.

"Better Albums" ? ?? ..The Shaming of the True is my 2nd favorite album of all-time, and I've felt since more or less, soon after hearing it, it should be included in every single library on the planet (with an Explicit Language Warning sticker on the cover).

4. Iron Maiden - Brave New World
5. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

1. Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
2. Great Big Sea - Road Rage*
3. Iron Maiden - Brave New World
4. Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
5. Ayreon - Universal Migrator**

* - Road Rage is a live album. If live albums are not allowed, then Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element, Part 1 can be added instead.
** - If Universal Migrator is counted as 2 separate parts, then my selection is Part 2: The Flight of the Migrator.

I'd consider those two separate Ayreon albums.  I know they are now sold as one single release, but at the time, they were released separately (kind of like Opeth's Deliverance and Damnation), so I think they should be considered two albums.  And as such, The Dream Sequencer might crack my top 10 for 2000, but the other one is pretty average.

My only issue is the "slow year" comment. Was it slow because you didn't like anything else, or was it slow because you didn't listen to much else?

Slow because I can't find anything else released that year that I like (other than a couple of greatest hits releases, but I don't think those count).

Interestingly, I hadn't even discovered those three bands yet in 2000, so as far as new music, this thread reminds me that there was none in 2000 that I was interested in (unless there is something more obscure that hasn't been posted yet that I am forgetting).

I can't remember what the heck was all released then.  These are the two favourites of mine from what I've seen listed.

Blaze - Silicon Messiah
Nightwish - Wishmaster

Transatlantic - SMPTe
Symphony X - V
Nightwish - Wishmaster

Wow, this was a slow year.
For some reason I thought you were a fan of Within Temptation fan.  Mother Earth was released in 2000, I believe.  I'm not that big a fan of the album, but that's usually considered their best album, isn't it?

I wow!  I didn't even realize that.  Okay, I need to edit my post and add that to the list.  That would easily be my #1 for that year.  That's another band that I didn't discovery until just a few years ago, so I didn't even realize that album came out in 2000.

Feel free to take it or leave it, but I'm going to offer a suggestion for this.  One of the thing that is frustrating to me personally about these kinds of things and makes me lose interest is when they drag on too long.  I would recommend that when 2000 moves into round 2, you start the nomination round for 2001 to go at the same time.  Have 2 or 3 years running at once, and it keeps things moving a bit faster.
