In my opinion the bonus disc that came with the special edition of BC&SL was about 100 times better than the actual album. The covers on this disc are all fuckin' unreal. Also, the songs that they chose were all really good choices in my opinion.
JLB's voice on here is easily the best since Awake.
Petrucci's tone on most of the tracks is perfect, and gives the older songs a new breathe of air.
Jordan isn't overplaying
The bass is audible
Hopefully they get some inspiration from this disc when they are making their new album, because I think it's one of the best things they've done since the early/mid 90s.
Appreciate!

I agree with you in these sentences but I don't love that disc so much. IMO, the actual album is almost 100 times better. But this is only my opinion.
-
I enjoy the covers album (with the exception of the king Crimson track but that's because it's King Crimson song). Not better than BC&SL for mr though. I still love this album. Not much to fault in it as far as I'm concerned.
Stargazer and the Queen medley are excellent. I also enjoy the Zebra song. So much better than the original.

I agree completely.

I don't like the covers so much, and particularly Stargazer. When you have listened to Mundanus Imperium with Jorn Lande on the vox, sorry, but you find this one not so good.

I'll have to agree with this statement, he just plain rock. His raspy style is back, and some of the high notes just send chills down my spine. And listening to the last couple of minutes of the Queen cover, what crossed my mind is how great it would be to have LaBrie sing some high yet gentle notes like those on their next album.
Now that I think about it, this bonus disc should be their entire inspiration corner for DT11.

Admittedly Jorn sounds better singing Dio or Coverdale than when he "does" himself, but Dt's version just sounds better, and JLB is excellent on Stargazer.

Amazing covers. The best one is Diary of a Madman, I'd say.
-
That's Uncovered 2003-2005. :P
I like the Queen medley the best, however, the Zebra one was an interesting choice, so I found that one cool too
-
James absolutely slays on this disc..
My only complaint was that I wish they had rerecorded To Tame A Land during the BC&SL sessions. That and Lark Tongues is a complete waste of time.

My bad :lol
Anyways, *appreciates the amazingly awesome Rainbow cover*

The Stargazer cover and Queen medley are both amazing. The bands best covers are on this disc. Well besides on their Dark Side of the Moon cover disc.
-
Now that I put some thought into it, I think the Queen cover is my favorite Dream Theater cover up to date.

I thought all the covers on the bonus disk were from the BC&SL sessions, they certainly have the BC&SL sound to them. When was To Tame a Land recorded?

I think it was 2008. They recorded it for an Iron Maiden tribute for some magazine.
-
Yup, for Kerrang!
-
Take Your Fingers From Hair is their most energetic cover I've heard.
-
^ Very true, great cover of a great underrated band...James is amazing on Stargazer and the Queen cover is brilliant, love the disc but I prefer the Black Clouds CD...as I already knew all the songs before they did them I think they've done a great job to tribute them...respect to DT as always!!!! :)
-
Agreed. Jame's voice is excellent on that disc. The vicrato he uses throughout, mainly on Stargazer and Lily of the Valley is brilliant! Just like the early 90's. I hope he uses some nice vibrato on the next DT album
-
Wen Iheard they were covering Zebra, brix were shat. The fact that they did Take Your Fingers From My Hair made it 10x better for me.
-
That amazing covers CD IMO, is an example of how mind bendingly brilliant DT can sound when they
have to stay within certain boundries. Every member of the band was beyond superb on those
covers. And I believe that if they ever brought in an outside ear ( yes, yes I know the subject
has been beaten to death over the years) who in a productive and friendly way, helped keep
the compositions from straying unnecessarily, they could have a real masterpiece. That covers
CD is proof of that if you ask me.
-
I have the disc with the covers, but I have never listened to them.
-
You should. They're amazing.
-
i think its a bit much to say one disc is 100X better than the other. but i do agree that the bonus disc is probably better. 14.44% better sounds bout right.
oh, and lark's tongue is the opposite of a waste of time.

I agree, but what the covers CD really proves is how underutilized James has been over the last 3 or 4 albums.
-
Love it.
But love the YTSEjam cover boot even more.

Completely agree with this statement.

Heart of the Sunrise is really fucking good

We might as well just change the title of this thread to "Uncovered 2003-2005/2008-2009 Appreciation" because people can't seem to understand it originally meant the BC&SL disc :lol :lol :lol
I agree, though, that covers disc is pretty damn good, and JLB is definitely the one who shines most on it - he's hitting high notes and doing things he hasn't done in awhile on a DT record, so I hope the band takes note of that and lets JLB rip it up on the next album (the notes, not his vocal cords).

Is it any good of a cover? I've heard of the cover, but honestly in my imagination JLB does not sound good covering that song.

He sounds great, reaches the high notes just fine.

I agee as well, MP has a lot to do with this stuff so I hope somebody picks up this duties. MP spent many hrs in the studio working on that album. I would luv to hear Take Your Fingers From My Hair in concert that song sounded so good.
