Title: Has anyone seen a non cover band cover a DT song in concert?
Post by: LTE3 on February 01, 2011, 10:56:57 AM
DT is so good about covering bands that have influenced them, I wonder if any of the bands that have and are influenced by DT have ever covered them in concert. Does anyone have an example and if so what band, what song? I don't think many bands could get away with it and have it be respectible. I think Opeth could do a good job.

Why would you think Opeth would do a good job? They're not exactly the fastest shredders, are they?

I just feel Opeth has the skills to handle a DT song. The are great musicians and appear to be creative musically. So with that combo I think they could handle doing one.

I think they could do a cover in a very wide sense, i.e. modify a DT song to fit their mood. Regarding doing a note-by-note cover, I just don't see it. Nobody in Opeth for example strikes me as a guitar wizard.

I once did a cover of Peruvian Skies in a band I was in about 10 years ago, does that count?

Whoa, that's kinda harsh, jsem.  I somewhat agree, though, since the OP was asking about bands covering DT "in concert."  Every once in a while, you hear about a bar band that plays "Pull Me Under" but my impression was that we're talking about "real" bands.

Fredrik Åkesson has some decent chops. It's not as if every DT song has near-impossible to play guitar parts.

This simple question alone makes me realize that DT is one of the best bands out there.  I have trouble thinking of people that could cover them...surely there are individuals that could play DT stuff on a given instrument, but I don't think there's a band out there that has five members who are at or above the caliber of DT's members.

I know, and the "Voices" tribute album kinda suffered from quite a few bands chickening out and playing super-easy songs. But, at that point to me the question is, why even bother covering DT if not choosing a song that showcases what DT is about?

Vision Divine covered Another Day. Not sure if they played it live.

I saw 3/5 Circus Maximus and 2/5 Seventh Wonder do a nice cover of Under a Glass Moon in Oslo a couple of years ago. They pulled it off quite well, as far as I remember, and Mats Haugen (CM) nailed the guitar solo!  :metal

Hehe, don't worry, i wasn't offended. In fact i was kind of taking advantage of the fact that the OP didn't specifically rule out unknown bands. A little mean of me maybe and i apologize :)

And anyway we were a real band, just unknown and playing in crappy pubs to small to almost non existant audiances who i don't think would have cared had we been playin Living la vida loca by ricky martin

Now that i think of it, wasn't there a magna carta release of DT covers? Similar to the Working Man Rush covers album?

That must have been a good show. I like CM, but they can sound a little corny at times, but songs like Sane no More and Mouth of Madness sould like they could be DT songs.
Back on the subject I think Symphony X could do a DT song proud, but I have not heard them do one.

Pretty sure I seem to have a hazy memory of Angra covering Wait For Sleep back in the day. No idea whether that's right or no, just sounds familiar.

EDIT: Huh, looked it up... seems like it's a Vanden Plas cover that someone tacked onto an Angra bootleg for some reason. That's a bit pointless.

Ah well, add Vanden Plas to the list. Not that I've heard a note of their music or anything.

the guys from out of eternity (ex-into eternity members) apparently had the glass prison nice n rehearsed. i was much looking forward to seeing/hearing it, but sadly, things seemed to fizzle out for them and gigging.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know this cover existed. Pretty cool.
