So the new Bright Eyes record, The People's Key, comes out soon and it deserves its own thread because I say so. Has anyone (Chris) heard it yet? I just started my first listen :caffeine:
-
I'm starting a listen now. I didn't know it was out yet!
-
Bright Eyes album's cover art always throws me off at Cheapo. I think it might be an album I'd like to check out, but then I see the name and put it back.
-
I have their discography on my computer, not really sure what kind of music it is, but I'll eventually check it out. :P
-

Haven't yet, looking forward to it!
In regards to Bright Eyes in general, I'm a big big big big fan (as anyone who has my last.fm will know)
-
I can't really get into Bright Eyes :-\
-
Then you should die in a fire.
Made of clogs.
-
Hey I didn't go to Austria.
-
I know you didn't ???
-
*Tick reference missed*
-
Ah, I get it now :lol

I actually really like some of the cover art. It's plain, but goes well with the music.
I can't really get into Bright Eyes :-\
Child please
I just started my first listen :caffeine:
Me too. Firewall was a strange track, but I think I really like it (and the album) so far. The album almost reminds me of Digital Ash at times.
Edit: Shell Games is awesome!
I'm really starting to like this album.
-
Needs moar acoustic instruments
-
I can't really get into Bright Eyes :-\
Child please

:lol :millahhhh
-
Well...That was really underwhelming. Hoping it will benefit from repeat listens.
-
It sounds like a grower to me, so I will refrain from opinions for now.
-
Want to hear.
-
Well...That was really underwhelming. Hoping it will benefit from repeat listens.
You say that about every album that isn't I'm Wide Awake :lol
edit: initiating first listen
-
Hmm. I'll give this band a chance. :tup

Hmm. I'll give this band a chance. :tup
I wouldn't start with the new one.
Start with "I'm Wide Awake... It's Morning"

By every album you mean one album, you poophead
-
u r poophead

Am I the only one who read the thread title as "The Conor Orbert/Bright Eyes Thread."?
-
Yes.
-
"Shell Games" is a great song.
-
I think Haile Selassie is pretty dang cool
-
The Bible's blind the Torah's deaf the Qur'an is mute
if you burned 'em all together you'd be close to the truth still
they're porin' over Sanskrit under ivy league moons while shadows
lengthen in the suuuun
-
this is the first day of my life
swear i was born right in the doorway
-
I've decided that I really like the album.
The best songs come around the end.
-
The Bible's blind the Torah's deaf the Qur'an is mute
if you burned 'em all together you'd be close to the truth still
they're porin' over Sanskrit under ivy league moons while shadows
lengthen in the suuuun
I think Cassadaga is a really fantastic album. Thoughts?
And I'm coming around to The People's Key, too.
-
I gave Cassadaga my first listen last night. Definitely needs a few more listens. It was the same for I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning though.

Cassadaga is delightful!
The People's Key has been in my car for the past few days, and I'm already digging the heck out of it. Some songs haven't quite connected yet, though.
-
Delightful is a great word. Cleanse Song <3
-
Lime Tree is a beautiful thing.
-
for sure it is. That album is just gorgeous.
-
What's up with the annoying keys parts?
-
Heh?
-
On Shell Games and Jejune Starts there are really annoying synth/key parts to the songs
-
I don't see anything wrong with them.
-
Fair enough. I find them annoying.
-
I like that shit.
-
Well, I know when it's finally done
this whole life's a hallucination
you're not alone in anything
you're not alone in trying to be
-
I'm listening to Digital Ash in a Digital Urn right now. Only on the first song and liking it way more already :D.
-
I told you, son.
-
THAT WAS SO GOOD
-
YOU ARE WITH US NOW.
-
ONE OF US
ONE OF US
-
Now I am up to two Bright Eyes converts!
Digital Ash is my favorite :tup just ahead of Lifted.
-
So who else is catching them on this tour?
They're playing at the Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason theater in Miami, which is by far my favorite venue. that place is fucking gorgeous.
-
They're playing in London soon, but it's sold out and tickets were ridiculously expensive anyways.
-
And each morning she wakes with a dream to describe
Something lovely that bloomed in her beautiful mind
I say, "I'll trade you one for two nightmares of mine,
I have somewhere I die,
I have somewhere we all die"
HOW IS THIS SONG SO GOOD
-
They're playing in London soon, but it's sold out and tickets were ridiculously expensive anyways.
While buying tickets for Tallest Man, I got a 'recommendation' from the venue that they were playing there as well. I checked it out and apparantly it was already sold out, and really fast as well.
-
They're playing at the RAH in June, but even the cheapest tickets are 30 quid. Sorry, not worth it.

Dude, check my plays for that album in last.fm
-
hold on tight, beginner's mind
-
I have listened to nothing else in my car than the new album. I looooove itttt
-
It's really fucking good. I especially love the run of Triple Spiral through the end of the album.
edit: THE END IS SO WONDERFUL
-
It's a great album. Not their best by any means, but not disappointing at all either.
Ladder Song is wonderful.
-
The whole thing is omg imo
Eva Braun went to dye her hair
little Hitler sighs in his giant's chair
.....and dreamed of nowheeeeeere
and dreamed of nowheeeeeere
and dreeeeeaaaaaamed
-
So yeah, this album is still rockin mah socks
-
I stopped listening to BB King to hear it again. Because OF YOU.
I fucking love the preacher dude.
-
Te music video for Shell Games is out there somewhere, can't link from my phone
-
found it, but I'm having syncing issues :(
https://www.guardian.co.uk/music/video/2011/feb/16/bright-eyes-shell-games-video
-
I'm going to see them tomorrow night!
No clue what the setlist is going to be, I'm really excited!
Also, I hope they have that girl from the Mynabirds with them on this tour, I was pleasantly surprised when I learned she was on The People's Key.
-
I hhaven't seen it discussed here, but I thought I would bring up how cool the references in Shell Games are.

Cool way to end the Bright Eyes name.
-
I can't see the pictures but that's amazing! I didn't even notice!
-
Wait, why can't you see them? Are they blocked or something?
-
Just a blank frame shows up, no image.
-
Oh. Well, they're supposed to be the last five album covers (excluding Lifted) in chronological order.
-
They're playing at the RAH in June, but even the cheapest tickets are 30 quid. Sorry, not worth it.
I'm going to that, my tickets were less than 30 quid I'm pretty sure

I would kill to see almost all of those songs. Fuck it, They're playing Radio City on tuesday and wednesday I can't miss this. Hellooooo stub hub.
edit: going on wednesday, the 2nd night of a two-night stand at radio city :caffeine:
-
Hey double post.
I gave Fevers & Mirrors my full attention last night, 'twas good! The "interview" at the end was pretty funny :lol
I also listened to the Four Winds EP and it had some pretty nice songs on it! Working through Letting off the Happiness now.
-
If I just had a drivers license I would not have to live with the fact that I will never see Bright Eyes for the rest of my life.
-
Oh my goodness what an amazing show.

Cleanse Song???
Holy cow! Glad your experience was as awesome as mine. Way to end a legacy.
And wasn't Beginner's Mind awesome!
-
YES!!!!!! All the new stuff was fantastic, and I thought ending with One for You, One For Me (especially with the closing monologue) was about the perfect way to close it out.
Oh and Nate Walcott deserves an award for his horn playing. That shit was beautiful.
-
I bought The People's Key yesterday and I LOVE it so far! :tup
-
OK, this album is wonderful! :heart Where do I go from here??
-
Everywhere else. They never made a bad album.
-
If you want a more specific album to listen to, everyone seems to love I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning first. Digital Ash in a Digital Urn might work better for you, though.
If you liked the People's Key, you're probably bound to like whichever one you pick up.
-
Lifted or The Story is In the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground is a fantastic album, as well as Fevers and Mirrors.
-
Dey all good.
-
OK then! Since like I have a great journey in front of me! :tup
-
I own several Bright Eyes albums, and the only one that doesn't WOW me is I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.
I dunno why, but the others I own, which are Fevers and Mirrors, Lifted, Digital Ash, and The People's Key, just sound so much better to me. *Shrugs* Maybe it'll grow on me.
But the stuff I like from them (him), I love. It's a tie between Digital Ash and Lifted for my favorite, with Fevers close behind :)
-
Weird. I still think I'm Wide Awake is far and away Conor's best record.
oh and Cassadaga hasn't been mentioned. Make sure you check that one out, it's lovely.
-
Weird. I still think I'm Wide Awake is far and away Conor's best record.
oh and Cassadaga hasn't been mentioned. Make sure you check that one out, it's lovely.
Definitely. I'm gonna hunt down his whole discography.
I just can't get into I'm Wide Awake. I've given it about 5 or 6 full listens, but my reaction is still "Meh." It's a good album, but everything else I've heard just stands out so much more to me.
-
WHAT?!
I'm Wide Awake is a classic
-
Yeah, it doesn't do much for me either.
-
Probably because you're dead inside.
-
My mind...boggled.
-
I knew my kind wasn't welcome here.
-
White people? You were right.
Get out, honky.
-
:sadpanda:
:sadpanda:
-
:neverusethis:
-
A part I really love in The People's Key is this segment of "Approximate Sunlight":
I used to dream of time machines
Now it's been said we're post-everything
As a child imagining
Neck ties and Coast lines
I seen the show man, what a sight
Dreanched us in approximated sunlight
The crowd was small and mostly blind
But kind, you're too kind
The lyrics, the melodies, the delivery...
:hefdaddy
-
I've listened to The People's Key, like, twice a day since it came out
this album is ridiculous
Also, how about some Lime Tree appreciation
So I just won't
won't be late
the window closes, shock rolls over
in a tidal wave
and all the color
drains out of the frame
so pleaaaassed
with a daaaaydreeeaaam
that now living's no good
I took off my shoes and
walked into the woods
I felt lost and found with
every step I took
-
We're going to a party! It's a birthday party! It's your birthday party! Happy Birthday darling, we love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much!
Really been diggin I'm Wide Awake... these days, should I go straight to the new album or continue with older stuff? Digital Ash in a Digital Urn sounds pretty cool.
-
It's all good. All of it. Digital Ash is fantastic if you want to go that way first.
-
Awesome. I've been on a bit of a folk kick lately and I'm Wide Awake... has been the album I've found myself spinning over and over so I'm looking forward to getting into the rest of their(his) discography.
-
Just wanna say, the Four Winds EP is awesome :D
-
Just wanna say, the Four Winds EP is awesome :D
Agreed, it's really nice.
So the rambling guy from The People's Key is in a band called Refried Ice Cream :lol
https://refriedicecream.com/
-
I need to bump this thread just to apologize for ever, EVER badmouthing Digital Ash as I'm Wide Awake's retarded cousin. It's ridiculously great. I like it more on every listen.
-
You also have to apologize about what you said about The People's Key and then we can be best friends
-
Digital Ash > I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.
Also, Lifted is my favorite Bright Eyes album, easily :heart
-
Only listened to the People's Key twice but its quite good. Digital Ash is really cool as well. I need more stuff. Tell my local record store to get more.
-
Only listened to the People's Key twice but its quite good. Digital Ash is really cool as well. I need more stuff. Tell my local record store to get more.
If you ever see it available, get Lifted!
-
You also have to apologize about what you said about The People's Key and then we can be best friends
I take it back. I'm sorry. I love that record.
-
Thinkin' about trying Bright Eyes out since there are quite a few people here that love them.
Is the latest album an okay place to start?
-
I think it might be, but it's not really representative of their discography. I'M Wide Awake, It's Morning is pretty popular, but they have a flawless track record with albums.
-
Sure. If you like more folksy, earthy stuff check out I'm Wide Awake It's Morning and/or Cassadaga
-
I would honestly go with Fevers and Mirrors or Lifted.
I think I'm Wide Awake is overrated, but it's still a good album.
Digital Ash is awesome, too, but it's pretty different.
-
The People's Key is already done downloading, so too bad, I'm listening to that.
-
The only album I have is 'It's Wide Awake' and it's pretty good.
-
I think I'm Wide Awake is overrated, but it's still a good album.
What are the weak tracks, in your opinion?
-
I think I'm Wide Awake is overrated, but it's still a good album.
What are the weak tracks, in your opinion?
Honestly, it's not that any of the tracks are weak. But out of all the others I've heard (all except their/his debut), it just holds my attention the least
I haven't listened to it in awhile, though. I'll probably give it another spin soon. And it's still a good album. I just feel like Conor's done better.
-
Bump to say: Holy shit!! Digital Ash is (to quote that dude in Wayne's World who watches Garth's drum solo in the music store) amazing, dude! Arc of Time (Time Code) is the jammy jam!
-
That record is incredible.
HONEY DON'T YOU WEEP
-
And maybe he lost
control
fuckin' with the radio
BUT I BET THE STARS
SEEM SO CLOSE
at the end
at the end
at the end
at the end
at the end
-
So I've been listening to Bright Eyes almost nonstop the last week or so. The People's Key is awesome (favorites are "Ladder Song," "Beginner's Mind," "Shell Game," and "One For Me, One For You"), and I already liked Digital Ash (Take it Easy and Hit the Switch... :heart :heart :heart). So when I bought I'm Wide Awake Its Morning, it was my first exposure to "real" folky Bright Eyes and I'm quite enjoying it. "Lua" is so beautiful and is on the fast track to becoming my favorite Bright Eyes song.
I think my favorite aspect about the music is that the vocals are the forefront of the music. Not that Conor's a great vocalist, because normally I think I'd get really sick of his voice really quickly, but the way he perfectly enunciates the lyrics and how they're never buried by instruments is really really well done.
-
I just wanted to say that I love all of this
-
Almost forgot, I listened to "Shell Games" earlier today and realized the first verse references past Bright Eyes album art! I thought that was really cool.
-
Yeah I tried to demonstrate that two pages ago but it didn't work :/
-
So wait, looked back through that and what's this about "ending the Bright Eyes name," Chris?
-
The People's Key is the last Bright Eyes album.
-
:-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
-
Yep. You were too late in becoming a fan. You done goofed.
-
:'(
-
I'm listening to I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning for the first time now. Man the intro is really something... I love the album so far!
-
After fully digesting Lifted and Digital Ash, what album should I got for next?
I was thinking either I'm Wide Awake or Fevers and Mirrors, or maybe the new album?
-
You really can't go wrong. But go ahead and get I'm Wide Awake. And don't forget Cassadaga! Never forget Cassadaga.
-
jesus dude, do you have like a chip in your brain for when people post in this thread? such a fast reply
-
short answer: yes
-
So for the various orchestrated songs (notably Make a Plan to Love Me) is it all composed by Conor, or did he collaborate with a classical composer like DT did for Score?
-
I'm pretty sure Nate Walcott (the trumpet guy) did all the transcribing and stuff for the orchestrated stuff.
-
that guy's a boss. And NO ONE DARE FORGET CASSADAGA
ANYONE
EVER
-
So I just listened to The People's Key and it was pretty fuckin' good. Definitely interested in more.
-
I think I like Cassadaga better than IWA,IM
-
I could see how any album could be someone's favorite
-
I'm Wide Awake is good, but I can name several Bright Eyes albums that immediately strike me as better than IWA.
I think either Lifted or Digital Ash is my favorite.
-
My copy of Lifted got posted today...well yesterday since it's 2:30am here.
-
I've had Singularity stuck in my head for days now
IT'S SUCH A GOOD SONG
btw it's a single/b-side sort of for The People's Key
-
What album should I get if I have only heard I'm Wide Awake and think it's a fantastic album? Is there an album in a similiair style?
-
I suppose its sister album (digital ash) is close enough to it, except very electronic.
Before that point the songwriting is pretty different in style, and absolutely wonderful.
-
"Lua" is the best Bright Eyes song.
-
I'll just get Digital Ash and then some random stuff. Have listened to I'm Wide Awake a lot, so might be time to get a second album :p.
-
"Lua" is the best Bright Eyes song.
hey cowpoke, get more then three albums before you come in here making claims
-
I'm listening to I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning for the first time right now. This is sooooo good!
-
"Lua" is the best Bright Eyes song.
Typical female favorite, you know..
-
yeah, when I saw them a few months ago every girl around me was shouting "lua" between every song haha
-
Don't care. And I will get more of their albums, Chris, be patient!
-
My favorite Bright Eyes song has got to be Waste of Paint.
That song is just... I can't even begin. I'm sure Chris can testify to its brilliance, too, though.
-
o ya grl
that song inspired my twitter name "inkwaster" (waste of ink was taken)
-
Am now listening to Digital Ash in a Digital Urn for the first time. Down in a Rabbit Hole is so pretty!
-
Digital ash is just so magnificent.
-
Hit the Switch is mindblowingly awesome.
-
Yes.
-
I want something horribly sad.
-
Just listened to all of Lifted again.
God, what an amazing album. Anyone who likes Bright Eyes but hasn't heard this record needs to hear it. Right now. This instant. It's by far Conor's best songwriting, if you ask me, and it converted me from fan to BIG fan.
-
Alright so I bought The People's Key and it's pretty bad. :P Did I start in the wrong spot? Should I get something else?
-
Alright so I bought The People's Key and it's pretty bad. :P Did I start in the wrong spot? Should I get something else?
you should have started at killing yourself
-
:lol
Anyways, I love The People's Key and it was a good enough starting point for me. Others might suggest I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning or Digital Ash.
-
Alright so I bought The People's Key and it's pretty bad. :P Did I start in the wrong spot? Should I get something else?
If you can stand VDGG you should be able to enjoy Bright Eyes.
Try Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Its what I started with.
-
Heard a few songs here and there. Definitely prefer them. Maybe this particular album isn't my thing... I'll be sure to pick up something else when I return to my hometown (all they have here in Calgary is The People's Key, which is why I got it).
-
But the People's Key is awesome.
-
LieLow, check out Lifted. It's their best album if you ask me.
-
LieLow, check out Lifted. It's their best album if you ask me.
Seconded.
Also, I feel like Make War is way too ignored, can we get some love in for that song?
-
I downloaded IWA a few weeks ago and have given it a few spins. Liking it, but I need to hear it more. Also, on that first track, I totally thought he was about to tell the masturbation story from "Mallrats." :lol
-
So, guess who hasn't heard a single note of Bright Eyes and is still going to see them at an outdoor venue with The Mountain Goats tonight? That's right, this guy.
-
you don't deserve to live
-
So, guess who hasn't heard a single note of Bright Eyes and is still going to see them at an outdoor venue with The Mountain Goats tonight? That's right, this guy.
So jealous right now.
-
You better fucking like it
-
Peoples Key is growing on me. Still not in love with it, but I like it now.
-
you still should have started at killing yourself
-
The People's Key is really good.
-
you still should have started at killing yourself
:lol
-
I don't know which one I like best; Cassadaga, Digital Ash, Fevers and Mirrors, I'm Wide Awake, or Lifted.
-
i don't really have a preference to any bright eyes album, conor doesn't know how to write a bad song
he just isn't capable of it
that said, the albums i listen to most are fevers and mirrors, lifted, and letting off the happiness probably and all the EPs from that era
-
I like Conor because we have the same first name (one "n" is an odd spelling of Conor).
-
So I came across a song called A Spindle, A Darkness, A Fever, and A Necklace. Oh my god this is amazing.
-
well you must have listened to the rest of the album after that right
-
You better fucking like it
I did fucking like it.

Nice flippin set! Arc of Time!! :heart
YOU CAN MAKE A PLAN
CARVE IT INTO STONE
-
It's almost disturbing how much I've been listening to A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction for the past few days now
-
I've been blasting To Love and to Be Loved nonstop the past few days. I played it for my dad in a long car ride yesterday and the lyrical content really wowed him.
-
I don't feel like going into the details right now but WOW, that was an experience! The best part was that they played Let's Not Shit Ourselves, which was right up at the top of the list of songs I was hoping to get from them live and it made an amazing live song. Thank you Conor.
-
I CAN'T BELIEVE HE PLAYED THAT
-
i am seeing them on monday for the second time this tour and i am p excited
-
I wish they were coming close to Greenville but oh well. I just picked a bad time to become a fan. :'(
-
I wish they were coming to Arizona. Conor is such an elitist!
-
bright eyes tonight
gonna find a way to acquire 4loko so i don't have to be so goddamn sober

1. Find a mixtape my ex girlfriend made me
2. Never really paid attention to it before, got it almost 4 years ago
3. Decide to look at it today, it has a bright eyes and fleetwood mac song
4. Feel like shit for the rest of the day
5. Never be open again

Been listening to I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning a lot lately. Fantastic album. Currently beginning my first listen of Digital Ash in a Digital Urn.

Alright so I bought The People's Key and it's pretty bad. :P Did I start in the wrong spot? Should I get something else?
Alright remember this guy right here? Yeah he's dead. Completely dead.
Bright Eyes is like a top 10 band for me now. :P Digital Ash still hasn't hit me, but I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Lifted are both top 50 albums by anyone for me at the moment.

OH THANK GOD
I was scared I became a fan right as they were retiring the band. Dodged the deadliest fucking bullet ever.

Same here! That was the best ending to any interview I've ever seen. :lol

1 year old thread to the day. How about that.
So yeah, Lifted is pretty much the embodiment of how I feel about my life right now. It's fantastic.

Shit now I'm depressed that nobody posted in this thread for a year. Guess I'll throw on Lifted too!
