Title: The Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes Thread.
Post by: antigoon on January 30, 2011, 02:24:34 PM
So the new Bright Eyes record, The People's Key, comes out soon and it deserves its own thread because I say so. Has anyone (Chris) heard it yet? I just started my first listen :caffeine:

Bright Eyes album's cover art always throws me off at Cheapo. I think it might be an album I'd like to check out, but then I see the name and put it back.

I have their discography on my computer, not really sure what kind of music it is, but I'll eventually check it out. :P

I actually really like some of the cover art.  It's plain, but goes well with the music.

I can't really get into Bright Eyes  :-\

Child please

I just started my first listen :caffeine:

Me too.  Firewall was a strange track, but I think I really like it (and the album) so far.  The album almost reminds me of Digital Ash at times.

Edit:  Shell Games is awesome!

I'm really starting to like this album.

While buying tickets for Tallest Man, I got a 'recommendation' from the venue that they were playing there as well. I checked it out and apparantly it was already sold out, and really fast as well.

I hhaven't seen it discussed here, but I thought I would bring up how cool the references in Shell Games are.

and the vanity

the circuit board

(lyrical reference to a lot of songs on Digital Ash in a Digital Urn)

and the city streets

shooting star, swaying palm tree

laid it at the arbiter's feet

Cool way to end the Bright Eyes name.

I own several Bright Eyes albums, and the only one that doesn't WOW me is I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

I dunno why, but the others I own, which are Fevers and Mirrors, Lifted, Digital Ash, and The People's Key, just sound so much better to me. *Shrugs* Maybe it'll grow on me.

But the stuff I like from them (him), I love. It's a tie between Digital Ash and Lifted for my favorite, with Fevers close behind :)

Definitely. I'm gonna hunt down his whole discography.

I just can't get into I'm Wide Awake. I've given it about 5 or 6 full listens, but my reaction is still "Meh." It's a good album, but everything else I've heard just stands out so much more to me.

A part I really love in The People's Key is this segment of "Approximate Sunlight":

Quote
I used to dream of time machines
Now it's been said we're post-everything
As a child imagining
Neck ties and Coast lines
I seen the show man, what a sight
Dreanched us in approximated sunlight
The crowd was small and mostly blind
But kind, you're too kind

The lyrics, the melodies, the delivery...

I've listened to The People's Key, like, twice a day since it came out

this album is ridiculous

Also, how about some Lime Tree appreciation

So I just won't
won't be late
the window closes, shock rolls over
in a tidal wave

and all the color
drains out of the frame
so pleaaaassed
with a daaaaydreeeaaam
that now living's no good

I took off my shoes and
walked into the woods
I felt lost and found with
every step I took

We're going to a party!  It's a birthday party!  It's your birthday party!  Happy Birthday darling, we love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much!

Really been diggin I'm Wide Awake... these days, should I go straight to the new album or continue with older stuff?  Digital Ash in a Digital Urn sounds pretty cool.

Awesome.  I've been on a bit of a folk kick lately and I'm Wide Awake... has been the album I've found myself spinning over and over so I'm looking forward to getting into the rest of their(his) discography.

I think it might be, but it's not really representative of their discography. I'M Wide Awake, It's Morning is pretty popular, but they have a flawless track record with albums.

I would honestly go with Fevers and Mirrors or Lifted.

I think I'm Wide Awake is overrated, but it's still a good album.

Digital Ash is awesome, too, but it's pretty different.

Honestly, it's not that any of the tracks are weak. But out of all the others I've heard (all except their/his debut), it just holds my attention the least

I haven't listened to it in awhile, though. I'll probably give it another spin soon. And it's still a good album. I just feel like Conor's done better.

So I've been listening to Bright Eyes almost nonstop the last week or so.  The People's Key is awesome (favorites are "Ladder Song," "Beginner's Mind," "Shell Game," and "One For Me, One For You"), and I already liked Digital Ash (Take it Easy and Hit the Switch... :heart :heart :heart).  So when I bought I'm Wide Awake Its Morning, it was my first exposure to "real" folky Bright Eyes and I'm quite enjoying it.  "Lua" is so beautiful and is on the fast track to becoming my favorite Bright Eyes song.

I think my favorite aspect about the music is that the vocals are the forefront of the music.  Not that Conor's a great vocalist, because normally I think I'd get really sick of his voice really quickly, but the way he perfectly enunciates the lyrics and how they're never buried by instruments is really really well done.

So for the various orchestrated songs (notably Make a Plan to Love Me) is it all composed by Conor, or did he collaborate with a classical composer like DT did for Score?

I don't feel like going into the details right now but WOW, that was an experience!  The best part was that they played Let's Not Shit Ourselves, which was right up at the top of the list of songs I was hoping to get from them live and it made an amazing live song.  Thank you Conor.

1. Find a mixtape my ex girlfriend made me
2. Never really paid attention to it before, got it almost 4 years ago
3. Decide to look at it today, it has a bright eyes and fleetwood mac song
4. Feel like shit for the rest of the day
5. Never be open again

Been listening to I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning a lot lately. Fantastic album. Currently beginning my first listen of Digital Ash in a Digital Urn.

Alright so I bought The People's Key and it's pretty bad. :P Did I start in the wrong spot? Should I get something else?
Alright remember this guy right here? Yeah he's dead. Completely dead.

Bright Eyes is like a top 10 band for me now. :P Digital Ash still hasn't hit me, but I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Lifted are both top 50 albums by anyone for me at the moment.

OH THANK GOD

I was scared I became a fan right as they were retiring the band.  Dodged the deadliest fucking bullet ever.

1 year old thread to the day. How about that.

So yeah, Lifted is pretty much the embodiment of how I feel about my life right now. It's fantastic.

Shit now I'm depressed that nobody posted in this thread for a year.  Guess I'll throw on Lifted too!
