At this point in my life, I’m being thrown so much music to listen to, and I huger for more; there’s never enough. However, when I talk to people about my favorite bands/artists, I end up going, “Well, I love______ but this band is even better…on second thought, forget I said that and check out ___.”
While I’m doing this partly for my own sanity, I also realize that I’ve mostly been a “music-seeker” on DTF; searching for more music to listen to, but never really recommending any to anyone. So, people of the interwebz, here are my top 21 (because I couldn’t bear to take one out) bands/artists, some put up pretty high because of recommendations from you DTFers. :)
________________________________________________________________________________________
21. The Spring Standards- This band is rather obscure, and is newly-born, but that doesn’t put a damper on their talent. Although they’ve only put out two albums, I’ve enjoyed both immensely: they’re full of amazing riffs, which are badass in their simplicity, impeccable vocals (from every band member, might I add), and they cover a wide range of genres and styles. Sometimes I’ll be reminded of the Beatles, but by the next track it’ll be Pink Floyd, and by the end of the album I’m just simply mesmerized by the tuba solo. Pure talent.
20. Tenacious D- I’m probably going to get some crap for this, but they have to be on this list. Tenacious D was one of those bands that I went to for a quick, hearty laugh, and nothing more. However, over the last year, I’ve been listening to them more and more. Kyle Gass and Jack Black are two underrated geniuses; I can expect their music to have either gorgeous melodies or a fun riff that you can’t help but move to. But their true genius comes in with the lyrics—only Jack Black could get away with crooning vulgarities as a soothing love song! And, I still find myself laughing my ass off to their perfectly-rhyming, making-sense-while-making-no-sense lyrics while I shake my head in disbelief because the music is still so good.
-
Tenacious D is awesome. The reason I can still listen to them is because the music is actually good. Kinda like Dethklok. The biggest joke is that these fake bands make good music.

This. The funny part is, I don't even like death metal yet I like Dethklok.

cock pushups? what's that?
that's when you lie on the floor, and let your boner lift you up
how many can you do?
uh, one i guess
just one?
one is all you need

Tenacious D FTW :2metal:

It does make you men "more attractive to the ladies"... :eyebrows:
I dunno if I'm doing this right, but whatever, here goes:
19. Antonio Vivaldi-Yes, I mean the dead, classical composer guy. At school (and possibly on da forumz?), I'm known as a total metalhead, but Vivaldi is something I listen to often, and own waaay too much of.
My love for Vivaldi stemmed from my 6(8) years of playing the violin (I still play, but I stopped taking private lessons 2 years ago). My parents do listen to a great deal of classical music, but for some reason, never Vivaldi, so I soon stocked up on plenty of his compositions. He was a total GENIUS: not as schmaltzy as other classical composers, but still managing to send shivers up your spine. Most of his work has a very eerie, shadowy feel to it, but sometimes he throws in an incredible cello or classical guitar solo that weaves in and out, but never commands all of the attention. He has something for every mood I'm in, has made violin a delightful experience, and has made me appreciate all music even more.
18. The Offspring- Congrats and thank you to everyone who recommended the albums Smash and Ixnay on the Hombre! I had only known Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace and some of Americana before, but these albums secured the Offspring in my top 20 bands.
The Offspring take the "traditional" punk sound and bring it up a few steps. Not quite as poppy as Green Day, but not as brash as the Plasmatics, the Offspring strike a perfect balance between the two and often keep that up throughout an entire album (Smash being a perfect example).
The Offspring also strike me as the more sensitive of punk bands. As much as I love the Misfits and other punk bands with mindless, playful lyrics, the Offspring really are able to move me emotionally.
-
The Offspring FTW. I think I was one of the Smash recommenders (my personal favorite). I think of them as punk + metal, which I like. "Gotta Get Away" and "Self Esteem" were two of my favorite songs in middle school (right before I got into metal).
-
is Tenacious D the Jack Black band?

Oui. :)

Good choices all around so far :tup

I love the Offspring

ALRIGHTY THEN.
17. The Misfits- OMG PUNK OVERLOAD. So. This band. Is amazing. I got into them while going through a huge Cliff Burton phase (former bassist of Metallica; killed in a bus crash while touring in 1986). He swore by them and shoved them down the other bands members' throats, and suffered for it, but kept doing it anyway. I decided I had to hear them.
The Misfits instigated my love for punk. Their hysterical, meaningless lyrics, their outrageous getup, an incredible frontman (Glenn Danzig, of course...Jerry Only wasn't even close), and, obviously, good music. Walk Among Us and American Psycho are two of the most amazing albums I have ever listened to, filled with a constant dark-humor attitude and creativity. Can't ever get enough of this band...I'm sad they only made 6 albums.
-
(former bassist of Metallica; killed in a bus crash while touring in 1986)
Thanks for clearing that up, I had no idea.
-
I aint no god damn sonna 'va bitch, you better think about it baby!
The Misfits :metal
-
I've only heard one song by them, and they had the worst production of any band I heard, ever. Still, I shouldn't criticize them from just that...

GTFO ALRIGHT

I know, right? :lol I try not to judge bands on production. I mean, Metallica's ...And Justice For All sounds like it's played in a tin can and it's still amazing.

16. Morbid Angel-This is probably a surprise to many of you who know me (especially Lat, if he's following this), because I've never broadcasted my love for RORORORORO vocals and all that jazz. Death growls have never been my "thing"--I do love Opeth and Edge of Sanity and Born of Osiris and Cannibal Corpse (all of which could be on this list but aren't, simply because I don't know enough of their music)--but Morbid Angel found the dark slice of my soul that had a growling fetish and made it its bitch.
Why should Lat be surprised? Because, if he's reading this, he's probably going, "Wait...did I get her into them? Wait...it couldn't have been me...wait--really?" But yes, Lat, it was you. I was asking him for recommendations for Cole's "heavy" roulette round, and he recommended Morbid Angel's "Gateways to Annihilation." I sampled it, rejected all the songs as ones to send to Cole, but went back and listened to it afterwards anyway and I haven't looked back since.
MA is capable of being slow and unbearably BRUTAL, not just you standard death metal--you really can't say, "Oh, that sounds exactly like __ (band name)." They remind me a bit of Death, but I think they surpass them in every way possible. No words for their sound which has mutilated my soul so gracefully (which is a rather ironic thing to say, considering the amount of words I've just typed :p).
15. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band- He can't sing and nearly all other guitar player can run circles around him, but the Boss just has something that seems rather hard to come by these days: a pure, fun-loving, I'm-not-doing-this-for-the-money-but-because-I-wouldn't-rather-be-doing-anything-else-in-the-world spirit. While he croons "The River" I feel as though he's sitting beside me, needing comfort; during "Born in the USA" I feel like I can chant along with him and, who knows, give him a fucking high five or something.
Bruce has energy that I can't really describe. No matter what CD or record or iPod song of his I listen to, his energy seems to flow into my ears and pulses in my body, like two hearts. It's amazing. I've never seen him live, but if listening to studio versions is this good, then I probably wouldn't be able to stand his actual presence.
Oh, and I almost forgot--the music is overwhelmingly good. Always simple, always mindblowing. Gotta love it.
-

Great to see another Bruce fan here. You should definitely see him live if you get the chance, he's still a powerful live act.
-
I am of the opinion that Bruce CAN sing, he just doesn't have the best voice in the world. One of my favorite artists ever. TDOL, if you ever have the opportunity to see him live, do it. It is one of the best concerts you will ever see. When I saw them, the encore was my favorite song ever: Thunder Road. Best. Encore. Ever. It was a wonderful moment to be alive.
-
They remind me a bit of Death, but I think they surpass them in every way possible.
lolque?
Yeah, um, no one surpasses Death.
Except Morbid Angel.
Death is pretty good, but their best album doesn't even begin to come close to Morbid Angel's first three records. Altars of Madness, Blessed are the Sick, and Covenant are some of the greatest death metal albums ever recorded. Glad to see a fellow MA fan on this board :tup
-
Seventh Son, I think this is actually the 1st time I've ever agreed with you. *shakes hand*
14. Genesis- What stared out as my mom dancing with me to her “Invisible Touch” record (yes, we used them then and we still do) and listening to her “Foxtrot” cassette tape in the car when I was little has evolved into a strong love for Genesis’ music, both Gabriel-era and Collins-era.
Maybe it has to do with listening to it from an early age, but I still believe that “Foxtrot” is on of the greatest albums ever. Same with “A Trick of the Tail”, which was their 1st studio album with Phil Collins as the singer—this is my favorite Genesis album (flowed closely by “Foxtrot”) because I enjoy Collins’ voice more than Gabriel’s, there are no freaking DRUM MACHINES, and the music still has the weirdness from when Peter Gabriel was still the singer. “Wind and Wuthering” is good too, for the same reasons.
If you aren’t a Genesis fan or have only heard the hits ( That’s All, Invisible Touch, Land of Confusion, etc.) then you are missing out. Go and listen to Supper’s Ready, Ripples, Your Own Special Way, Squonk, and/or Watcher of the Skies and get back to me. Your life will never be the same.
13. Slayer- Because Slayer.
No, really, this is the answer to everything considering this band; because it’s the only way that you can let them get away with all their crap and have it still be good.
Their lyrics are tasteless; I can’t decide whether Jeff Hanneman wrote the lyrics for Angel of Death in two minutes, laughing, or if he sweated over it for hours and flourished it going, “YEAAAAAAAH!!1!!111! THIS IS METAL!!!11!!!” Same with Araya’s crappy singing and screams and Hanneman’s guitar solos that make no sense with the context of the rest of the song. And for some reason, all these quirks make me love the band even more. Why? Because Slayer.
“Reign in Blood” came out at a time where nearly all metal bands were competing; the faster, the better. Although a few good songs came out of that album ( Angel of Death and Criminally Insane[/i] being some), out of the depths came “South of Heaven” and finally, “Seasons in the Abyss”. Both these albums are chock-full of slow, eerie, doom-ridden songs that shake my core.
Not to mention their latest album, “World Painted Blood”---it proves that they are as insane and crazy as ever. Songs like Americon, Human Strain, and Playing With Dolls are absolutely incredible, and this album was released not even a year ago (how old are they? Mid 40s?)!
-
Because Slayer.

*snippity Morbid Angel bippity*
This girl knows her shit. I feel a tad honored being the sole influence into introducing just one more womang in this world to Morbid Angel. Gateways and Blessed are the Sick are easily their two best albums, probably followed by Domination (lolopinions). :metal :metal :metal
They remind me a bit of Death, but I think they surpass them in every way possible.
lolque?
Yeah, um, no one surpasses Death.
While I love Death, with Leprosy being one of the greatest death metal albums of all time, I agree that Morbid Angel is still a better DEATH METAL band. Death just happens to be the best TECHNICAL DEATH METAL band.
Altars of Madness, Blessed are the Sick, and Covenant are some of the greatest death metal albums ever recorded.
[/quote]
Don't get me wrong, I love all those albums, but I've never cared for Altars as much as every other MA fan seems to. It's great early death metal (Very thrashy sounding) but it doesn't even come close to the 3 albums that came after it. lolopinions.
Because Slayer.
I love how UMH and I made this catch on.
-
I was listening to A Trick Of The Tail when I saw your Genesis entry (still am listening, right now it's Mad Man Moon).
Probably my favourite of the 70s prog bands along with Pink Floyd.

Big agree for Bruce, but I do disagree that he can't sing. He also used to be a pretty decent guitarist, listen to Adam Raised A Cain. And YES again @SDN for Thunder Road, it's easily the greatest rock song ever written.

I never said I didn't. In fact, I never said it was a bad album or that I didn't love the majority of songs on it. But it's just not anywhere near my favourite. The others (Excluding Formuals and Heretic) are just better if you ask me.

Formulas is fucking awesome wtf :|
Like seriously, what the hell lat. What the fucking hell. Formulas takes a fucking shit on Domination. Heretic is awful, I agree with you on that, but Formulas is their 4th best record after their first 3.
Covenant is still their best album though. God of Emptiness ftw :metal
-
Dude, sometimes you really need to chill, god damn. And maybe I just haven't given Formulas enough of a chance, but it just seems like the same old same old. And beside, Domination has Dominate, Where the Slime Live, Dawn of the Angry and Caesar's Palace.
Album rankings for MA basically go as followed for me:
Gateways/Blessed
Domination
Covenant
Altars
Formulas
Heretic
Evil Demos

I’m so happy that people are following/posting; thanks guys!
Sorry it’s been a while since my last post…as Numbers has probably said already, things are insane around here (but even worse for me, with all my overachiever extracurricular activities :P).
12. The Indigo Girls- A while ago, I attempted to make an “official” thread about this duo, and it failed miserably. I was somewhat upset and disappointed that no one really listens to them on the interwebz, because they are missing out.
Although they might not be proggy or :metal enough for the rest of the board, no one can say that their music isn’t clever and well thought-out. Amy Ray and Emily Sailers, though nearly polar opposites, make and incredible couple. Amy Ray’s compositions have more fun lyrics with a punkish flavor, while Emily Sailers lyrics are rigorous, elegant, and poetic, with her music having a cleaner flow to it. You can hear this in their voices as well, with Ray’s being rather gravelly and Sailers’ being somewhat angelic. Their vocal harmonies are impeccable and incredible.
Both are incredible guitarists; I’ve tried to learn quite a few of their songs before and failed miserably, and fingerpicking is my forte! Nothing ever sounds the same from song to song for them.
Two things I especially appreciate about their music is the little details that they add, such as a continuous djembe drum throughout the song, screams, a music box, or simply having a song with as single guitar and a triangle. I also love the subject matter on which they write; one of my favorites is all about reincarnation, but in an unbelievably creative way (check out Galileo for all of you people who are curious).
11. Machine Head- In the beginning, I only really liked/knew Aesthetics of Hate. But after Cole gave me “The Blackening,” I became slightly obsessed. That album is UH-MAZE-ING. “Burn My Eyes” is beautiful as well. Davidian is one of their best songs, no questions asked. Rob Flynn’s barking is exceptional, but I also cannot get enough of his singing voice, which is just as good, if not better. Their music tears out your heart, stretches and pounds it a bit, and then reattches it. It’s moving and rip-roaring and just all-around open-mouthed-wowness. The only reason this band is not up insanely higher on my list is just because I don't know enough. Which shall soon be remedied.

10. Pantera-I swear, I’ve been listening to this band for a while now and I still find myself openmouthed, iPod in hand, with their album “The Great Southern Trendkill” playing.
Pantera is one of the heaviest, most brutal bands that I can enjoy at all times. Phil Anselmo’s barks and screeches are earth-shaking, and when he actually sings, I actually tear up (Cemetery Gates, anyone?).
I know many people feel that “Cowboys From Hell” was their only good album (and these people have obviously never listened to “The Great Southern Trendkill”) but really, this band is full of some of the most vicious, mindblowing riffs I have ever heard. They are a lot like Machine Head for me, but they take it a step further with a cleverness and grasp on the genre that I’ve never heard done again.
Pantera scratches out emotions in me that no other band can; a feeling of reassurance but, at the same time, a feeling of “okay-hello-life-I’m-gonna-kick-your-ass.” Not sure that made much sense, but I really have trouble describing what this band does for me. With Pantera, it goes beyond the amazing music.
9. Yes- YES! PROG NERDS FTW! “Fragile” is one of my favorite albums of all time. From hits like “Roundabout,” “Changes,” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” to songs that deserve more recognition such as “South Side of the Sky,” “Heart of the Sunrise,” and “And You and I,” Yes hits all the parts of me that go “YES!” (I didn’t realize that was a pun until I typed it. Sorry.)
Although lyrics mean a lot to me, Yes’ lyrics really make no sense. Which happens to be just dandy, however, because the musicianship makes up for it. :D I cannot get enough of their solos or drumming…especially the drumming. No wait; especially the bass lines. (See what I mean?) Oh, Yes’ bass lines…the ones in “Roundabout” and “Heart of the Sunrise” are some of the most amazing bass lines I’ve ever heard. When I was 10 and my Dad gave me “Fragile,” I actually wanted to be Chris Squire. I still know most of the bass lines from that album by heart. :heart
-
9. Sorry.)

Yes is probably my favorite classic prog band, tied with Floyd. The Yes Album is my favorite. Never gets talked about much. Great band, and I second the love for Chris Squire's basslines. Steve Howe is a great guitar player as well, especially the softer stuff.
-
YES! Finally another one that considers fragile their best album! EPIC CHOICE
-
Fragile is my favourite too. I love the basslines in Roundabout - I want a Rickenbacker bass DAMMIT!

Adore both bands. :)

8. Shinedown-I'm expecting shit for this one, but I'm being as truthful as I can. A "mainstream" band they may be, this band just keeps getting better and better with each album. Even though they only have 3 albums, it's incredible to see how many of them are original and creative, and a huge amount appealing to the public.
However, some of the best Shinedown songs are the ones that are overlooked. Sure, Second Chance is fine, but Lady So Divine, Beyond the Sun, and All I Ever Wanted are 10x better; it's a shame that not many people know/appreciate these because, with the illegal downloading/iTunes/etc., many people just buy the hits.
The musicianship is mediocre; nothing special, but It's enjoyable. Actually, Brent Smith's voice isn't mediocre at all; it's one of the best rock voices I've ever heard (if you don't beleive me, listen to their cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man).
I'm always in the mood to listen to their music and can't wait for their next album; I hope they go with the same pattern of getting better and better with each one!
7. Megadeth-Props to Cole and UMH to getting me into this band! (Although my grudge against Dave Mustaine has only lessened a LITTLE.) They remind me a bit of Metallica, but with funnier (a.k.a. extremely blunt) lyrics and better drumming.
I hate to admit it, but Mustiane is so...badass. His singing voice isn't remarkable at all, but his snarls and overall, subdued viciousness sends chills up my spine. Not to mention his musicianship is A+++.
Megadeth is an incredible thrash metal band (and oh, how I love thrash), but has something that other thrash metal bands that I've looked into don't: a few tablespoons of creepiness. Creepy, shivery music is one type that I've always loved. However, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond just isn't :metal enough for me...so when I "discovered" Megadeth, I actually remember thinking, "THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR."
Thanks again UMH and Cole! :heart

Whadya mean I don't believe in God?
TALK TO HIM EVERYDAY
You just made me want to listen to some Megadeth.
-
Good to see Megadeth get some respect. I don't understand when you say their lyrics are less meaningful. I think they're probably just as meaningful, maybe just delivered in a cleverererer way.
-
I'm sorry, I fudged up my words. Editing now. What I mean is that they are so incredibly blunt. Their lyrics are like Slayer's but with meaning.

Boy, talk about being all over the place. Nice list though, and your father giving you Fragile at ten is just awesome. I was turned on to it at seven by my older brothers. We used to play rock band(playacting, not the video game) and I was always the drummer.

Okay to get back on topic:
6. Porcupine Tree- I had my first taste of this band just a few months ago, and look at where they are in my favorites! That fateful day that I listened to “Deadwing” all the way through was one of the more glorious days of my teenage life.
I don’t care what anyone says; you can always find something you’ll like in this band’s discography, no matter who you are. I’m sure of that. The fact that Steven Wilson can just keep on whipping out not only amazing songs but amazing albums astounds me.
Porcupine Tree’s strong points, I think, are the amazing musicality and technicality of their compositions. Many of their songs are full of one incredible riff after another, and they flow effortlessly into each other. I also love the certain eeriness many of their songs contain—and then it’s “OH HELLO AWESOME MIND-BOGGLING RIFF” and back to the mystical fingerpicking and Steven Wilson’s whispery voice. (Listen to Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and you’ll get exactly what I mean.)
Thank you so much letters, Sigz, and anyone else that guided my into the loving hands of Porcupine Tree—I honestly cannot get enough! :heart

Well since my library has around 600 aritsts in it....and no Rush (as it's long since been deleted), It's quite believable. I certainly don't hate them and I respect their careers. I just don't like the music. At all.

Thats a pretty good start, actually, just listen to AFTK (my second favorite) and 2112 more. Then get Permanent Waves. If you feel like venturing into the heavy synth era, then get Power Windows. If you want some more modern hard rock, then go for Counterparts. If you like the prog/70s hard rock side, keep listening to Fly By Night and/or get Hemispheres.
-
A Farewell To Kings. <<<<<< Absolute epic album. Best rush album imo.

Listen to Rush more. They definitely aren't the easiest band to get into, but once you do.... you'll never be the same. ;)
Top recommendations: A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, and Permanent Waves. After that head into the 80s era.
-
I guess I'm part of the small portion of people that liked Rush as soon as I heard them? I only have Caravan - Single, but I'm very familiar with their radio songs and a couple other deeper cuts. I've never not enjoyed listening to them, even before I knew the name of the band! Actually I remember I was in the car with my dad one day and "Working Man" was on the radio, and I asked him: "Why is a girl saying that she's the working man?", and I was being completely serious. He laughed and said it was Rush.

Alright, alright, I go listen to Rush.
AFTER I START ON MY TOP 5 YAAAAAAAAAAAY
Just for any of you who are curious, DT would go juuuuust about here.
Moving on:
___________________________________________________________________________________
5. Pink Floyd- How is it possible that Pink Floyd can be so eloquent and beautiful and crazy and heart-wrenching and scary all at the same time? I still cry while listening to "Wish You Were Here", especailly Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
From "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" to "Meddle" to "Animals" to "The Wall", this band has never failed.
David Gilmour is definitely one of my favorite guitarists of all time; his guitar weeps and screams and sobs and laughs...what he does hits parts of me that are rarely reached when it comes to music.
Syd Barrett and Roger Waters are both slightly insane (okay, it bit more than "slightly" in Mr. Barrett's case), which is perfect for the band's music. Even if you aren't a Floyd fan, you've most likely heard some of "The Dark Side of the Moon" or "The Wall"--and you should get what I mean. Their vocals send static down your spine and you fell electricity in your sockets (LOLWOW didn't realize the pun until I typed it)...okay, now I sound insane. But it's true.
Oh, and by the way: I've never smoked weed in my life, and I still love the music just as much as any pothead. :)
-
They were my favorite band until DT showed up. PF remained my favorite band after I found DT, but DT led me to Rush and PT, and now I barely listen to Floyd anymore. I did listen to "The Division Bell" recently and its a great, overlooked album. I still hold that WYWH is the greatest album ever, tied with Moving Pictures and Lightbulbu Sun.
-
Floyd is one amazing band! :tup WYWH and Animals being my favorites.

Oh, and by the way: I've never smoked weed in my life, and I still love the music just as much as any pothead. :)

Pink Floyd would be in the top of the list for a good majority of music fans, not just stoners. It is because they are that good.
-
Pink Floyd! YES
They are my number three right now, but they've got a hold on my favorite album: The Wall. And no, I didn't pick The Wall just because it's Portnoy's favorite. It was my favorite even before I learned that fact.
I'm more of a Waters-era Floyd fan. Love WYWH, Meddle, and Animals. Not really a big fan of DSOTM, however....it just never really clicked with me. In fact, it's the least favorite album I've heard from PF. I really wish DT covered a different album.
-
Pink Floyd, the first prog band I listened to. I love DSOTM and Animals, not that big a fan of WYWH and The Wall, although they have their awesome moments too.
-
Still think PF is the most overrated band ever with DSotM being the most overrated album in existence! Animals and WYWH are much, MUCH better.
-

I hardly believe you think that.

Without PF there is no PT and therefore no reason to live.

I've never cared much for Pink Floyd, but i guess there's always those bands.
Obviously i'm not familiar with that much of their catalog, but i've heard The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, then i know some individual songs like "Shine on you crazy diamond", "dogs" and "high hopes".
I can see why other people might love them, but to me i just don't find the music that interesting.

Because I am tired and can't really think of any bands at the moment, I would have to agree,
Metallica is infinitely more overrated than Nirvana would dream of being.
Agreed. They bore the shit out of me.
-
Wow...
-
Metallica is overrated on albums that are not RtL through AFJA
-
Fine, but those albums are God tier.
-
Absolutely. Especially MoP.
-

Wrong. Metallica is fucking solid and so is Load. They just are a different approach so it is a bit weird to see the Metallica name on them.

Load + Reload = One album worth of good songs and one album worth of meh. Though the good songs are pretty fucking good.
-
I actually love Load more than RtL, but that's an inflammatory comment for another thread.

I listened to DM again for the first time in about a year the other day, and it's still as AMAZING as I remember it being, but apparently I'm sort of alone with loving it that much amongst other Metallica fans. Still, AJFA is the undisputed king.
-
Metallica is overrated on albums that are not RtL through AFJA
RtL is their only album I genuinely enjoy anymore. That and the first half of MoP.

Not Orion? That's my favorite Metallica song by miles.

You, my used-to-be-friend, fail.
Mr. G: I can accept that. I don't think DM was amazing, but it certainly was a good album with a succession of very good songs.
-
zxlkho, what about Kill 'Em All?!
And yeah, I think I probably like DM so much as it was the first album from one of my favourite bands that I'd ever actually anticipated coming out, which seems weird as it was only 2 years ago, but I guess that's when I 'properly' got into music.
-
Oh yay ranking things:
MoP
RtL
AJfA
TBA
DM
Load
KEA

I can accept that too. I can understand why MoP can be seen as their best record, I just don't think it is. I only think their are 2 god tier songs in the album, even though the entire album is very, very, solid.
-
my used-to-be-friend.
:sadpanda:
Kill 'Em All would probably be about half way in between.

Ahh yes. I do like that song. It's just the rest of the second half that bores me. :P
-
I actually think AJFA is one of the finest songs, composition wise, that's EVER BEEN WRITTEN. So there.

my used-to-be-friend.

Listen to Load again and come back to me. Guarantee you love it.
And G, I agree. That is probably my favorite Metallica song which puts it up there for some of my favorite songs ever.
-
I've listened to Load many, many times before and I used to really like it. I guess I just outgrew my Metallica fanboyism over the last few years.
Also, this:
my used-to-be-friend.

I keed, I keed. You know how I get when it comes to Metallica. Load is just so fucking awesome. How people can not like Bleeding Me, King Nothing, Hero of the Day, and The Outlaw Torn is beyond me.
A friendly high five? o/
-
*\o
I will admit King Nothing is :metal
-
"King Nothing" is easily my favorite on those two albums. Great song.
-
Outlaw Torn off of S&M is my favourite Metallica song and a top 5 song of all time for me. They played it for the first time in 10 years when I saw them.
-
That's AWESOME! :metal
-
I think The House That Jack Built has Metallica's best chorus. I really don't get the hate.
-
Ride the Lightning is the only Metallica album I will ever listen to. I think it's a sentimental thing.
-
I only really care for RTL and AJFA.
-

Add Kill 'Em All and I agree with you. Except its been months since I last listened to Metallica. I don't think they're terrible, just so goddamn overrated to hell and back. They've got scattered good songs across their other albums, but they aren't good albums as a collective whole. KEA/RTL are the only Metallica albums that are really consistent, song for song.
-
I love every Metallica album, I just don't listen to them that much anymore. I listened to them for the first time in about a year a couple months ago and I loved it still. In fact I just played "Master Of Puppets" on the drums yesterday after not playing it for such a long time, and I still remember it note-for-note.

I haven't listened to them or play their songs on drums for months now but if I do, I'd probably still remember KEA-TBA note-for-note.

I can jam to every song off the first five albums, but probably know about ten of them note-for-note. Tons of fun to play. I also know a few off Death Magnetic.

Master really is your favorite? Seriously? That is not a problem but I always thought you dug Ride. Hmm.
-
St. Anger might actually be the worst album I've ever listened to.
And I gotta say, I really like Garage Inc. There's some mighty fine covers on that one.
-
St-Anger really isn't that bad. It doesn't sound like Metallica at all though.

WHERE'S TDOL?!?!
-
Thanks glaurung :p
I am so sorry, guys...I haven't been on the computer at all for the past week or so. Life has been INSANE. Not a free moment. And even now, I supposed to be practicing my guitar and I just came home from studying with Cole after helping out with an event at my church. :P
Writing up my # 4 band now. I am so sorry. :heart
-
4. Pearl Jam- First off, Eddie Vedder is HAWT. His voice, his grungy look, his stage presence… :caffeine:
Anyway.
Pearl Jam’s first 3 albums are nearly perfect, with their first two, Ten and Vs. being flawless. ("Vitalogy" has Foxymophandlemama and Bugs, so… :P) And then there’s "Yield" and "Binaural" and "Backspacer"…
Dis band got SOUL. Eddie’s crazy vocals in a totally different language (it took me a while, but now I speak Vedder fluently) go from soul-rocking screeches to chill crooning. I love the riffs, the utter raw, organic guitar sound…just thinking about it sends chills up my spine. (Daughter is a perfect example of this. That intro…) This is another one of those band that I can listen to at almost any time: mad, sad, tired, energized…
Although half the time you can’t understand them, Pearl Jam’s lyrics are incredible. My favorite PJ song, Garden, has lyrics that make me tear up nearly every time I listen to it. PJ’s lyrics mixed with the guitars’ desperation and vocals that aren’t of this world (I dunno how to describe his vocals, tbh...I tried earlier, but “screeches” and “crooning” doesn’t cut it. Listen to this song if you don’t understand.) make one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s almost supernatural.
Oh, and by the way--this band was entirely spoon-fed to me by Numbers—THANK YOU!
I can't promise anything, but I'll try to make the next ones more...punctual? :lol
-
:)
I really hope I got you in this band the way you said I got you into this band. :lol
-
wat
-
You: "Hey this *insert shitty band here* is really cool"
Me: *walks up* "If you want good music, listen to Pearl Jam." *walks away*
You: " ??? "

HEY YOU LIKED DISTURBED MKAY
AND NO
YOU'RE WRONG
GTFO OF MY THREAD

Disturbed is cool, so NO U. Well...2 of their albums are anyway. Still, NO U.

Wait I'm so confused.
What I meant was that I got Cole into Disturbed...not all my recommenedations are "shitty". :P
-
Until Numbers listens to "The Sky Moves Sideways" by Porcupine Tree, his opinion on everything is invalid.
-
Elton John is awesome.
Yeah...suck it. :P
-
......my baby's got.....blue eyes.........like the deeeeeeep blue sea........
-
Back on topic, Pearl Jam are a top 10 band for me as well.
Seeing Black live was one of the greatest moments I've had at a concert, the sun was setting at Hyde Park and I said to my cousin 'damn, it's getting on in the set to get Black,' literally JUST as McReady went into the intro. Top 10 song ever as well.
