If there is something that a lot of classic metal bands (and some regular bands) seem to have done it's the short instrumental opening track that leads into a full metal song, usually to open an album. Some examples:
Metal:
Judas Priest - "Hellion"/"Electric Eye"
Iron Maiden - "Ides Of March"/"Wrathchild"
Testament - "For The Glory Of..."/"More Than Meets The Eye"
Rock:
Alan Parsons Project - "Sirius"/"Eye In The Sky"
Boston - "Foreplay"/"Long Time" (I know it's one track but still)
For some reason I love these types of songs. Anyone else got any more? I'm sure I missed a bunch.

My favorite example by them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LORTX3Yot2k
"The Spinward Marches"/"High Passage/Low Passage"
The riffs are addictive and delicious and Scalzi's vocal lines are some of the catchiest things out there.
I'M A SPACE PIRATE AND YOU KNOW MY NAME
AND WILK RAIDING IS A DANGEROUS GAME
IMPERIAL NAVY CAN'T KEEP UP MY PACE
SHE'S IN A ROCK SIX INCHES OFF ZHODANI SPACE

Also another example I'm ashamed that you missed:

I really like the one from that Angra album I haven't listened to in years.
From 'Rebirth', the song that comes before track 2 (Nova Era).
Just checked it out again, I really don't like this type of music anymore. WTF. But that intro is cool though.
-

Goblin Cock - "Hissy Intro" / "Stamped"
-
Every Coheed album that isn't NWFT starts like this.

Which happens to sound a lot like Into The Lungs Of Hell/Set The World Afire.
-

-
Kansas - "The Spider" / "Portrait"
-
Genesis - Horizons/Suppers Ready
-
Ahem...Hell's Kitchen/Lines in The sand. Surprised it took this long...
Vacant / Stream of Consciousness, although it's kinda of the opposite way around, with the short part being the song and the long part being the instrumental

Extreme - Mutha Don't Wanna Go to School Today
Chooooooooooon
-
Mew-Circuitry of the Wolf/Chinaberry Tree
-
Actually Testament likes to do that a lot:
-Signs of Chaos/Electric Crown
-Beginning of the End/Face in the Sky
-Hypnosis/Disciples of the Watch
-
Fight Fire with Fire, Battery and Blackened.
-
Kinda true. I was thinking more just instrumental tracks as opposed to openings that are part of the song.

Since you included Foreplay/Long Time I thought they could be included too.
-
Did I just prove myself wrong?
-
Well, "Foreplay/Long Time" is one track, but it's pretty clearly an instrumental as a lead-in to the regular song, and the title underscores that. I'd say it's in the sprit of the thread, whereas there are countless songs with longish intros before the vocals come in, and by definition the extended intro is an instrumental.
-
Into The Lungs of Hell and Set The World Afire is my favorite example of this, perfect mood set.
-
Another one I forgot to mention:
Celtic Frost - Innocence and Wrath/The Usurper
Fantastic opening to a nearly perfect album.

I'm not normally a lyrics buff either, but I actually like the lyrics here, the dark, lo-fi production goes perfectly with the story told in the song imo
-
Strapping Young Lad - Velvet Kervorkian/All Hail The New Flesh
Symphony X - Oculus Ex Inferni/Set the World on Fire
Megadeth - Dialectic Chaos/This Day We Fight
2/10 for not mentioning Into The Lungs Of Hell / Set The World Afire. Much superior too.
Also the Darkness Of Christ / Disciple, best combo off their best 00's album.
-
Savatage:
Temptation Revelation -> When The Crowds Are Gone
Silk & Steel -> She's In Love
:hefdaddy
-
Attack Attack! - Interlude/The Peoples Elbow :neverusethis:
Between The Buried & Me - Medicine Wheel/The Primer
Dream Theater - Erotomania/Voices - Hells Kitchen/Lines In The Sand (why am I the first to list these two?)
Helloween - Initiation/I'm Alive
Iced Earth - The Star-Spangled Banner/Declaration Day
The Syncope Threshold - Prelude/Definitive Behavior
-
Someone already listed the HK/LITS
-
Dream Theater - Erotomania/Voices - Hells Kitchen/Lines In The Sand (why am I the first to list these two?)
You're not. And Hell's Kitchen is actually an outro to burning my soul.
-
Wot?
-
Warning, none of these are extremely short intros, they avg abt 1 minute - but epic nonetheless
Devil's Island by Megadeth :metal
Mr. Torture by Helloween (semi-questionable)
Doctor Doctor by UFO (also a bit questionable)
Alison Hell by Annihilator :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
Hot for Teacher by Van Halen

The OP didn't ask for fully instrumental songs... and I'm a big fan of fully instrumental tracks - especially as a sax jazz player, so please motivate what you mean by just posting a link to a wiki page -.-
-
There is NOTHING questionable when it comes to UFO!!!!
