Don't expect this to get a lot of hits, but anyone like these guys? Classic british hard rock with AOR moments and excellent melodies and the amazing voice of Bob Catley.
Some of you would know Catley from his Avantasia work with Tobias. They have had tons of albums and On A Storytellers Nights is easily one of the best rock albums of the 80's. Tony Clarkin is one hell of a songwriter too. I'm a huge fan. Their best albums being Storyteller, Wings of Heaven and Chase the Dragon. The latest one Moonking was excellent too. Can't wait for the new one next year too.

I saw them live last year actually, my dad is a big fan and he bought me a ticket as well.
It's not really my type of music, but it was better then i had expected. ;)
-
Not a bad ice cream but nothing special. I will just post this to get it out of the way too.

Cool man, that really would have been a good show. They are nothing over the top, just a great rock band.
I wish I could get the chance to see them one day.

I have Brand New Morning and I rather like it, it's a really solid hard rock album. Never bothered to check out any more of their stuff though, for some reason.

That's a great album, especially the title track and We All Run.
You should check out a Princess Alice and The Broken Arrow and Into the Valley of the Moonking. If you liked BNM you will like these too.

Wolf, Magnum isn't a band that I've ever really found time for. No good reason...

That's cool bro. Do put them on your list to check out. They are nothing mindblowing, just good solid melodic rock, you may like them. Check these songs;
How Far Jerusalem
On A Storyteller's Night
One Sacred Hour
Wild Swan
When We Were Younger
The Spirit
Kingdom of Madness
Vigilante
Don't Wake the Lion
Two Hearts

Yeah I love We All Run and the title track. The Hard Road is also awesome.

Cool, those are both on Spotify so I'll add them to my iPod and listen at work tomorrow. :tup

I haven't bought a new Magnum release in quite a few years, but back in the late 80's/early 90's I listed to them a lot. On A Storytellers' Night and Chase The Dragon are my two favourites.
-
Been a fan for a long time, probably 20 years now.
A big fan of them, Wings Of Heaven and On A Storytellers Night are my two faves from them.
Often decribed as 'pomp rock' by the (mainly) UK media.
I haven't bought anything new from them in a pretty long time now, but I am hearing good things about
the forthcoming album.
-
yeah, I was a big fan at one time (chase The Dragon, Storytellers', Vigilante, Wings) but lost interest after that. the last couple were ok but not enough to really get my juices going. They are probably, with Gary Moore, the band i've seen live the most as back in the day they were always touring.
The song Back To Earth is a huge favourite, along with Les Morts Dansant.
-
That's cool man, Back to Earth was a great A-side song, one of their best songs in fact. Amazing that it never made it on an album.
Also, Gary Moore is phenomenal.

Just got the new album... as a birthday present, from Bob Catley himself. I know his daughter a bit, she's really close mates with a friend of mine from my uni course, and so she managed to get a copy of it as a present as she knows I'm a bit of a fan. Says "To Rob, Happy 21st, Cheers!" on it - and my friend's signed it on the back, too.
Just finished the first song, sounds like some pretty cool stuff. Quite chuffed!
-
On A Storytellers' Night is my favourite album and they rocked at High Voltage! :metal Brilliant band.
-
The new album, The Visitation, is a classy piece of hard rock. Sounds quite Wings of Heaven in places. Recommended.
-
Haven't got my hands on the Visitation yet. If it's as good as Moonking, I'll be happy. Lowdz, your comparison to Wings of Heaven has got me excited.

Shit, that's awesome.

hilarious vox. that's bout all i know. oh wait, woops, i thought this thread was about magma.
-
Haven't listened to Magnum for a long time.
Decided to give the 'Goodnight LA' album a long overdue spin, this one took a hammering when it came out, for use of outside songwriters and Keith Olson's slick production.
Despite this, it has some classic Magnum moment's.
-
Some great songs on that one.
I'm hoping this new album is a lot better than the last one.
-
The last studio album I bought would have been Sleepwalkin ( which I don't have anymore).
Escape From The Shadow Garden, wasn't so good?
I was looking at a 5 disc set from the SPV years (Breath Of Life/Brand New Morning/Princess Alice And The Broken Arrow/Into The Valley Of The Moonking/The Visitation)
for just over $30, is it worth getting?
-
I'm not that keen on the early reunion stuff, Breath Of Life and Brand New Morning are not that good but have some nice tunes, Princess Alice Moonking and The Visitation are better but not as good as the classics.
On the 13th Day was the first reunion disc that really convinced me. I gave Escape from the Shadow Garden only a casual listen so can't comment on that one, still eagerly awaiting the new one.
Goodnight L.A. has some really great tunes, don't know why it received so much criticism, maybe because it didn't rise to the expectations after Wings Of Heaven?
-
Wow this thread had a five year bump lol
I got into Magnum based on Wolf and Brent recommending them. Great stuff, their songs are very catchy. Haven't heard anything from their latest though

Yeah, I couldn't even remember making the thread. Got a bit of a shock when I saw the thread with my name on it. :lol

This teaser sounds pretty nice. If they can do more uptempo stuff like this it should be cool.
-
Sounds good!
-
I had a weird approach with Magnum, I listened only to the reunion albums.
Here's my compilation I made with, going in reverse order, selected songs (the ones I actually like) from all the recent albums:
01 Live 'Til You Die (6:28)
02 Unwritten Sacrifice (5:24)
03 Falling For The Big Plan (5:35)
04 Midnight Angel (7:18)
05 Burning River (4:43)
06 Wisdom's Had Its Day (4:43)
07 Blood Red Laughter (4:40)
08 Didn't Like You Anyway (4:33)
09 Dance Of The Black Tattoo (5:15)
10 Shadow Town (5:57)
11 Broken Promises (4:52)
12 Black Skies (5:08)
13 Freedom Day (5:57)
14 Cry To Yourself (4:33)
15 Take Me To The Edge (4:21)
16 The Moon King (6:17)
17 No One Knows His Name (4:34)
18 Time to Cross that River (5:12)
19 If I Ever Lose My Mind (4:20)
20 A Face In The Crowd (6:28)
21 When We Were Younger (7:00)
22 Out Of The Shadows (6:58)
23 The Last Goodbye (6:28)
24 Night After Night (6:24)
Tracks times are there 'cause it's a copy and paste from Winamp's playlist ;D
-
So the reunion albums are well worth checking out?
-
I think that 'Goodnight L.A' is close if not equal to the 'Wings Of Heaven' album.
WoH propelled Magnum into an arena selling band, they hit the big time on the UK and Europe.
Thus with the next album their label Polydor decided the next step was the USA, and wanted to push them big time to the yanks.
The band demo'd the album, then the label brought in outside writers (Russ Ballard, Jim Vallance and Sue Shiffron) trying to get the band
that elusive US hit.
Three or four of the albums demo songs were dropped in favour of the the co-written songs.
They got in producer Keith Olsen and tried the 'Americanise' Magnum's sound.
All this led some a backlash against the band, the band were accused of selling out etc.
-
So the reunion albums are well worth checking out?
Every album, especially the latter ones, have for me at the very least 2-3 very strong and wonderful songs throughout!
Check The Moon King, Unwritten Sacrifice, Blood Red Laughter, Shadow Town or The Last Goodbye for starters...
-
Personally, Wings of Heaven pisses all over Goodnight LA. No comparison for me. Magnum did not need outside writers and it cheapened the album.
-
I agree to some extent, while the outside writers songs are relatively easy to pick, there are a couple of band songs that sound very slick too.
All thanks to the record label.
For me they sound very English and I wouldn't want it any other way.
-
So the reunion albums are well worth checking out?
Meh. Moonking and Princess Arrow are great, the ones after haven't really wowed me at all.
-
Just listened to Different Worlds and if I didn't know who it was I could've sworn it was written by Survivor.
-
Everyone has their own taste for sure. As far as the reunion albums go I said it earlier, my choice would be Moonking, Princess Arrow and 13th Day, the latter being the best for me.
I still like Goodnight L.A., tracks like Mama, Shoot, Only A Memory are Magnum classics, but they sure don't need outside writers and the album on the whole is no comparison to Wings Of Heaven.
-
Cheers fella's I'll check out those reunion albums and report back :-\
What about Bob's solo stuff?
I have three discs, The Tower, Legends and When Empires Burn, all are pretty good.

Bob solo, most are very good to great. My favourites are the Gary Hughes penned albums, so The Tower, Legends and Middle Earth.
With regard to the reunion albums, nothing has really grabbed me, but reading back in this thread I was raving about one of them (can't remember which and too lazy to look back) but I can't remember anything about it now :lol
-
Those are basically Ten albums with Bob singing?
-
Those are basically Ten albums with Bob singing?
Pretty much. Vinny on guitar too :metal
-
Is Middle Earth OOP/rare?
Just looked on amazon UK, 32 and 94 flipping quid for them?
-
At a guess I have probably played Catley solo more than Magnum over the years..
-
At a guess I have probably played Catley solo more than Magnum over the years..
In my time, probably me too.
I love When Empires Burn, that might be my fav. The heavier stuff works for Catley really well IMO. Spirit of Man has some really good tracks but the production lets it down. Immortal is a Karlsson penned album and is really awesome too.
-
Given that I love Magnum a lot and think Bob Catley is one of the better singers out there, I should have long checked out his solo stuff. The only one I know is Immortal and that's not bad at all.
-
Before the new one is coming out I thought I'd listen to Shadow Garden a few times.
So I put it in my car's CD players and the display says "MANGUM". WFT? :lol

New song;

not bad, but not interested in hearing it again

Sad news
Tony Clarkin has passed away

Just seen this. Terrible news.
-
Oh shit, that's awful. Class songwriter and they just have a new album out too. Awful way for the band to end.
-
Ah, that is so sad, just a couple of days before the new album comes out.
Tony Clarkin is such an underrated guitar player, so many great riffs, so many tasteful solos.
And although the last couple of records are a little bit samey, the band has a great discography over the last 45+ years, and all of them written by Tony.
-
That sucks, they have a new album coming out next Friday

Agree. He wasn't flashy but so subtle with excellent note choices, phrasing and melodies. This is one of my all time fav guitar live improv type thingys. I've watched this so many times;

Huge loss. I've lost track of the last few so will have to try and go back.
-
To still have been producing the music he was at 77 is a remarkable achievement, he has left an extraordinary catalogue of music for the fans. Threw Goodnight LA on the turntable this evening and as always, very much looking forward to Magnum's new album this Friday although it will be a somewhat difficult listen for sure.
RIP Tony.
Thoughts for his family loved ones and the many Magnum fans out there.
-
Last night I've listened to "On A Storyteller's Night" in rememberance of Tony Clarkin and the band. Still one of my favorites.
The new one will probably arrive on friday and listening to it will be bittersweet, knowing it's their swan song.
