Brought up by something Lonestar said in the Van Halen thread.
I say Aerosmith.
-
No to Aerosmith. They lost so much after they sobered up. I've had this argument many times with my boss, and it always comes down to either VH or Lynryd Skynyrd.

Skynyrd is way to countryish for me and I feel VH got too poppy as they got older. Aerosmith, to me, are the perfect blend of hard rockin' rock, and hard rockin' blues. Not to mention that I think Tyler is a better frontman they Roth. I also like Perry's style more than VH's. But as an overall guitarist, VH can run circles around perry.
-
Aerosmith also went pop-rock later in their career, but I still dig the tunes.
Answer: Kansas
-
Megadeth :neverusethis:
-
I want to go and say something like The Dear Hunter, but I have a feeling when you say "greatest American rock band" you mean something much more specific....
-
Beatles are very British, not American

shit
wasn't thinking

Funny, I feel that Aerosmith got too poppy after they sobered. I always include Skynyrd because of their endurance. They survived a plane crash that took half of the band members lives, and a couple of years later, they came back just as strong. Also, they arguably have written two of the greates American rock songs, Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. I'll wait for more opinions before continuing.
And by American rock bands, dtismajesty, I think Cole is saying that they have to be American. The Beatles were British.
-
What has Skynyrd done outside of their first two albums that is even noteworthy?

Actually, I have to agree. It's weird that my top 5 favorite bands are all from different countries. :P
-
I think VH has marred their record by all of their chaos...if Roth had stayed, the band had gotten along and they continued on for a number of years and then retired, there would be no question that they stand alone at the top of this.
unfortunately, none of those things happened
-
Kiss. What are you gonna say about it. The Kiss Army will back me up.
-
I'm going to have to go with Van Halen or Journey.
But if Alter Bridge keeps dishing out great albums like they have been.... ;)
EDIT: I would've made the argument for Red Hot Chili Peppers if two of the members weren't Australian...
-
The E Street Band /thread
Also, contenders include Van Halen, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Journey, and Coheed and Cambria (had to include that last one).
-
The E Street Band /thread
Ouch. I completely forgot about them. Um...wow...yeah. Now, I have to think. Aerosmith is more rockin but Bruce and his band are really America. They have innumerable awesome songs and are really America's band. Hmm?
-
There is no such thing as great American Rock to me.
-
I imagine only old timers (and I mean really old) might see any argument in this.. but I'll throw it out there: The Beach Boys. In a certain sense, they are a product of their times, and fall in to the 'oldies' category. Or are merely associated with surfer music. But also, consider how timeless their music is. Pet Sounds is still recognized as a masterpiece. And like other timeless bands (The Beatles, for instance), there music still sounds fresh and crisp as a cracker.
On the short list I would include VH, maybe Journey, Springsteen, and Metallica. I'm hesitant to include Aerosmith because of my personal biases against them.
-
There is no such thing as great American Rock to me.
Wow.
-
There is no such thing as great American Rock to me.
Dream Theater? :neverusethis:
@Cool Chris: Yeah, forgot that the Beach Boys were American. Don't listen to them much/at all, but they were really influential and popular. I can definitely understand your reasoning.
-
Not saying there isn't such thing but I either can't stand or don't like any of the bands listed with the exception of Metallica and early Van Halen. Now, if we were talking about NORTH American Rock, we'd easily have a winner *coughrushcough*
I would pick DT even though they're technically Prog Metal.
-
The Eagles
Maybe also:
Pearl Jam
The Beach Boys
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
CCR
Rush....they're from North America.
-
The Beach Boys
-
Answer: Kansas

-
The Eagles
CCR
The 13-year-old classic rock snob that used to exist inside of me forgot about these guys. I hang my head in shame.
-
The Beach Boys
-
OK, now that we have some opinions out there, I will rethink my original response.
I agree that the following need to be in the discussion...
The Eagles
CCR
The Beach Boys
Kiss
And I will rescind my Skynyrd motion, though they were responsible for the creation of a genre.
-
I'm tempted to say Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, though some of his best work has technically been on solo records. However, a lot of the Heartbreakers, particularly Mike Campbell, play on his solo records too.
Can't go wrong with The Eagles or The Beach Boys either, though.
-
Kiss. What are you gonna say about it. The Kiss Army will back me up.
*backs king up*
-
van halen
-
The Grateful Dead
Kansas
Metallica
Megadeth
-
What has Skynyrd done outside of their first two albums that is even noteworthy?
Honestly, not much but the first two albums are absolutely massive enough for me to consider them the greatest american rock band.
-
To me, the cross generational answer has to be Aerosmith. They've been successfull in all eras.
But I think there are some great "American" bands like Alice Cooper, Kiss, Springsteen, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Pearl Jam
-
All eras? I can't stand any of their stuff from the late 90s, 2000s. They've made some classics no doubt but they should've called quits decades ago.
-

Oh, I forgot,,Orcus can't stand them..forget 'em..
They've been remarkably resilient and have remained extremely popular.
Hey, I've never liked Springsteen..but he still belongs on the list.

Dude, what the hell?

The Grateful Dead
Kansas
Metallica

Good call on the Dead.

The E Street Band /thread
Not a fan of the Boss but I'd agree.

As much as I love the Dead I'm not sure I'd call them one of the greatest American rock bands...

Well, the Dead made an album called American Beauty. And Workingman's Dead was a tribute to the American laborer. Songs like Cumberland Blues spoke to the plight of the coal-miners.
-
Born in the USA. :P
-
Very true, Ludwig.
I REALLY wish I could have seen them live :(
-
If by America you mean North America; Rush. If that qualifies. If not, VH.
-
America is the greatest American Rock band ever. They rock my socks off.
-
To me, the cross generational answer has to be Aerosmith. They've been successfull in all eras.
This !!! hugely successful since the 70's, one of the first true American Hard Rock and Roll bands, being called the US version of the Stones. Although they turned a poppy this only added to their fan base. Their last two albums have them trying to go back to their 70's/80's roots without losing their later fans.

There's no way any group could reach a concensus here, lots of string contenders already mentioned. My personal choice would be Van Halen, but I wouldn't argue with most of the other choices like Aerosmith, CCR, Metalica, and the like.
Toy Matinee
As much as I love Kevin Gilbert, I think the title "Greatest American Rock Band" implies massive commercial success.
-
I thought about the Eagles but for some reason thought they had at least one member not from the US so discounted them. I might dock them a few points for only having 6(?) albums during their main run. But those were all popular and well-received albums.
All this Aerosmith talk is disheartening. Maybe I never game them a fair shake, but dang I never liked them.
-
I forgot about the best American Rock band ever....STYX.

Hmmm...
They were great, American, and a rock band.

I worked for Bill Graham Presents for a couple of years, and the one requirement was that you had to work all Dead shows, so about 20 of those I've sees I actually worked.
-
Based on some prior knowledege, 0 research, and everyone's posts in this thread, I'd say either Aerosmith or Metallica.
-
I saw aerosmith at the beginning and just skipped the entire thread to say that aerosmith has to be one of my least favourite bands of all american bands that exist. I would say Cake over aerosmith. Or Jmmiy Eat World. Just 2 random bands that I thought of that I like better then arrowsmith
-
I have to say Aerosmith even though I'm not a big fan. They are the most influential band and the most quoted or commercially used band in existance. My favorite is easily Van Halen or The Cars but outside my own opinion I have to say Aerosmith is the greatest American Rock Band ever.

Orcus, read your quote again in response to my post. You act like I posted sme crazy idea...why..You said you can't stand them. That doesn't discount them. They've been popular the whole time. Like I said, I can't stand The Dead or Springsteen, but they both certainly deserve merit. Sometimes you need to separate what is right and what you think is right.

Kiss
The E Street Band

Aerosmith

Tool.
lolno
-
Springsteen/Metallica for sure, in terms of embodying America and really living up to the word 'great' instead of a personal favourite. (even though both are)
Tool are my favourite band ever, but they don't qualify for this title IMO as there's no specific American...ness about them.

The Eagles
Journey
CCR
Queen
Jefferson Starship.

Huh? I disagreed with one part of your statement and you lash back like I was trying to speak gospel. Chill out. I don't like latter Aerosmith. Deal with it.

I'm trying to think of a good, popular, American, classic rock band and I'm reminded that British rock > American rock

I agree Aerosmith is definitely in the running. Back when I was in HS (the 70s), they practically rivalled Zeppelin in popularity. And they've had the reslience to pull off numerous top 10 hits throughout the 80s and 90s. Never mind that their sound got more commercial, it was still good old-fashioned hard rock/blues. Not too many bands were able to pull that off over the course of 3 decades.

New contender:
Billy Joel

"band"
While I agree, I'm talking bands here. If I would have said Artist, I would have put him up there. Technicality, feel free to want to kill me.

He's got a band behind him, for the most part.
In any case a lot of his subject matter is very American in nature

I'm shocked that The Doors have not even been mentioned? They deserve to be in the conversation for sure!
Others I like are...
Kansas
Van Halen
Kiss
Aerosmith
Peal Jam
Dream Theater ranks with any of them but for the sake of pop music reality, they are excluded.
The Eagles is not rock music, Its Chinese incestuous water torture in slow motion so... we will exclude them.

REO Speedwagon anyone?
my vote would go for Skynyrd or Aerosmith. Styx works too. and journey. F*ck

Metallica

a7x, though i heard their new drummer whines a lot.
-
Dream Theater.
If we doesn't count metal bands -- Aerosmith.
-
Van Halen and Aerosmith seem the two obvious answers. The problem is that they both petered out after 4-6 albums. I realize that they both kind of reinvented themselves, VH with Hagar and Aerosmith with [mother fucking] Desmond Child, but it's really not the same.
-
I would say that Van Halen would be the obvious choice if not for Eddie's descent into insanity.
So my vote goes to Journey.
