Well? Do you ever get that feeling? Where you think "I love Dream Theater, but man, I hope they make another song that makes me feel the way [] does!" We probably all have that song. Or maybe we don't.
Anyway, the song that stands out in this regard for me? Innocence Faded. I think there was a quote about how "nobody wants a song that sounds like that anymore." That's ridiculous.
What about you?

Lifting Shadows Off A Dream. It remains singular.

YES
Lifting Shadows is amazing and so underrated.
On that note, I would love a song in a similar vein to Space-Dye Vest, but from what I understand most of DT doesn't even like that song so :sadpanda:
-
Dissapear. They need to do more stuff like that.
-
caught in a web
anything like that. and a spider fingers part would be cool, obviously
-
Hells Kitchen. The atmosphere created in that son just just pure win.
-
Lines in the Sand
Fat chance though, ever since Petrucci Switched to MM, his sound changed drastically. I miss the Ibanez sound.
-
Yes, I would like DT to do more songs like the previous ones that I am fond of, and less like the previous ones that I am not fond of.
-
YOU NOT ME!!! :neverusethis:
Just kidding... I would love to hear them make a song like To Live Forever or Surrounded. A song in vein of Caught in a Web would be great too.
-
Surrounded. But I know it'd never happen, so whatever.

Fuck, I swear Music man turned him into a bear.

If there's going to be a song with the amount of groove that can be found in 6:00, I'd be very pleased.
-
match the epicness of Metropolis
and this :
Misunderstood.

Misunderstood.

Misunderstood.

Blind Faith. It used to make me feel so warm inside, but I inevitably burnt out on it. One of their very best songs, though, no doubt. I'd love to recapture that feeling at some point down the line - not necessarily in a song that sounds quite like it, but just that lush, thick mood.

Agree with this 100%, one of their best and most unique songs.
Also, Honor Thy Father.
-
I want Dream Theater to make Images and Words over and over and over again.
-
Caught in a web so much groove

Definitely
Or as much atmosphere as Trial of Tears

Learning to Live or The Spirit Carries On

New Millennium.

Well LiTS will sound different seeing as it was recorded with a strat!
-
The Dark Eternal Night :neverusethis:
On a serious note, I'd love to see another song like The Great Debate, Trial of Tears, and Octavarium.
-
wither, or under a glass moon

Blind Faith or/and These Walls.

Surrounded, Trial of Tears.

Pics or it didn't happen. Live he used his Ibanez originally.

I've never heard ANYTHING about Petrucci recording it with a strat. The only time i've ever seen Petrucci play a strat is some old video of him playing a Suhr I think at the Mesa Boogie booth at NAMM?
His Ibanez's middle pickup position was the inside coils of the two humbuckers, that can easily mimic a strat. Pretty sure the clean part in LITS was in the middle position.
-
He only recorded the LItS guitar solo with a Strat. The rest was Ibanez.

These, and Take The Time/Lines In The Sand. More funk is needed, DT.
-
Serious post time: hearing more groovy tracks like New Milennium, Take the Time, Caught in a Web, and LitS would be so awesome.
-
Well, any song from I&W tbh... :)
-
I would like another big medley.

Don't Look Past Me.

To Live Forever, Surrounded and Don't Look Past Me
I don't care if it sounds dated, it would still be awesome. More realistically, I'd like them to dial back the "balls" a bit and return to the style of metal on SFAM, so Fatal Tragedy.

metropolitan 1

At this point, anything with an ounce of integrity and creative input from all of the band members. Learning to Live had a great combination of lyrics and tasteful instrumental passages.
-
Take Away My Pain
Another Day
Vacant
SDOIT Pt. 6: Solitary Shell
Hell's Kitchen
Space Dye Vest
-
Lines In The Sand
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Scarred
Blind Faith
-
Learning to Live
-
I was trying to make a list and i end up with almost 2 songs of every album, so i don't know :S.
-
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Disappear, Space-Dye Vest, Vacant, etc., something minimal (for DT) and emotional. Or at least something like the "Beautiful Agony" section in ANTR without ruining it right afterward with tasteless soloing.
-
Seriously now, Take the Time. Undoubtly the top DT ~8 min song. Perfect length, every little microsecond of it is amazing, 9 minutes would be considered too long.

VOICES. hands down. I Love everything about that song.

It's surprising how many FII tracks are listen here, yet DTF contends it's one of their not-as-impressive efforts.
-
I don't!
-
Neither do I. FII is better than at least half of DT's albums.

-
I appriciate FII more and more
-
FII is awesome, and I always had the impression that a lot of the fanbase's resentment stemmed from the band bad-mouthing it.

Yeah, this and the fact that it is quite different than the typical prog-metal DT...ehich isn't a bad thing at all.
-
It is pretty great in my top 3. For me it's the atmosphere, it feels like your in the sky with all that room to breathe
-
I was actually thinking about this earlier today. I wish they would make another song along the lines of Scarred.
-
Nope. I'm excited with anything, whatever they come up next!
-
Eve
I love you.
-
I've actually never listened to "Eve."
I'll change that after I finish listening to "Deliverance."
EDIT: Just listened to it. Pretty good song, didn't particularly like the piano intro, loved the JP solo, and really liked MP's drumming throughout.

Possibly, but I also think it's become more "acceptable" as it's become less contemporary.
When you've only got Images and Words and Awake, FII is immediately dangerous and must be stopped at any length. But the more albums that succeed it, FII becomes less of a danger or a hint at a shake, and more of a quirky footnote.
Not to mention, as Dream Theater get older, they alienate the older fans - as any good band rightly should; if nobody's got an opinion then you're not doing the "career" thing right - and the newer ones fill their places. The people who remember being scared by FII will have been gradually shed, whereas if they've joined, say, post SDOIT and further, it won't have as much historical significance for them, and it's easier to judge on its own merits.
The albums seem to all undergo reappraisal. There are some who liked them when they first came out. Some who've always hated them. But the new fans will always tend to be more sympathetic to the entire, collected back-catalogue, 'cause they don't have to worry about a direction that the band might have wobbled towards ten years ago, and if they weren't constantly finding material that they enjoyed they wouldn't be joining the good ship Dream Theater in the first place.
Wasn't too long ago that SDOIT was the scrappy of the catalogue. Only 8 years down the line has it really buried itself into the collective consciousness. Partially 'cause the ones who didn't like Six Degrees when it came out have long since given up, partially 'cause it's nothing to worry about any more. Train of Thought is starting to get the hate alleviated, too. Only slightly, but the fan-base is slowly pivoting around, like a massive boat changing direction. That's grand. I've always liked Train of Thought.
NB: This was possibly a tad repetitious. I am drunk. Hello.

Fuck, I've got to follow robwebster? Dammit...
If I could pick a top 3, it'd be Surrounded, Eve, and then... The version of Don't Look Past Me from the 5 Years in a Livetime DVD. I remember being completely entranced while watching that; DT's video output usually doesn't hold my interest well, but the sheer emotion found in that song stopped my breath. Come to think of it, I think it's that very trait that draws me to those three songs I picked.
-
Eve
Yes! :hefdaddy
I discovered this track because I recently got "Cleaning Out The Closet." Just breathtaking. Quite possibly my favorite instrumental by the band.

Even more important is the fact that it has never been played live.
-
The third side of III sides to every story by Extreme. Would love to hear a "cupid's dead" Style D.T song as well.
-
now that I think of it, if they did another song like "The Killing Hand", that would be pretty badass.
-
Any lyricalpenned song by Muyng really. Who can say nay to another Trial of Tears, Learning to Live, Liftings Shadows of a Dream and Fatal Tragedy musically? So very different instrumentally and lyrically.
-

This isn't really a "cover song" thread.

Oh? Then what song am I thinking of?
Edit: Speak To Me. Huh. Can you tell that I haven't dug into my obscure DT tracks in a while?

I didn't say cover it. I said write a song "like" it.

You're right, bad choice of words. I meant, this thread is looking at songs in DT's past catalogue, to see what kind of song they can reproduce. Not songs of other people.

This. :-\

I hope they do more songs like Hell's Kitchen, These Walls, The Great Debate, Solitary Shell and Learning to Live.
