Title: Expand True Death of Life's Horizons!
Post by: True Death of Life on August 30, 2010, 08:00:20 PM
Lately I've been checking out tons of bands, and many of my camp friends introduced me to some. I've bought a song here and there, mainly because I'm unsure of what to add to my music collection.

Here's a list of some of the bands I either want to get more of or just don't know where to start:

Ektomorf
Morbid Angel
Born of Osiris
The White Stripes
Radiohead
Beck
Armored Saint
Motley Crue
Skid Row
Metal Church
The Misfits
Black Flag
The Clash
Pain of Salvation
Cannibal Corpse
The Offspring
Alice Cooper
Rage Against the Machine
Bad Religion
Porcupine Tree
Rancid
Judas Priest
Nirvana
NEW ADDITON: Iron Maiden
NEW ADDITION: Meshuggah

Please don't use this to critique my music tastes...I respect yours. :)

Sorry there are so many! Thanks in advance to all who help me out.  :heart

Rancid - ...And Out Come The Wolves

Great record, and one of the few punk bands I listen to.

Porcupine Tree go with In Absentia or Deadwing
Judas Priest: go with Screaming For Vengance
Radiohead: go with OK Computer
The Offspring: go with Smash
Rage Against the Machine: go with S/T
Nirvana: don't listen to anything by them.

The rest I'm not too familiar with.

As a huge Morbid Angel fan, I recommend you get either Blessed are the Sick, Covenant or Domination first. Those are easily their best.

The best them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mp1TmPo35yM

Nirvana: don't listen to anything by them.

See, you don't really listen to Priest, Nirvana, or Rage...
Sorry Cole. Your recommendations were taken into account, but I'd really like recommendations from people who know the bands really well.  :heart

The Misfits - Walk Among Us and Earth AD. Jerry Only-led Misfits is ok, but the true Misfits included Glenn Danzig, and his presence makes a sizable difference.

Cannibal Corpse - Just avoid the first 4 albums altogether. Chris Barnes is decent in Six Feet Under, but in CC he's just....meh. Check out any album with George Corpsegrinder as vocalist. He's a much better vocalist all-around, and the albums with him are much more sonically impressive. The two most recent albums, Kill and Evisceration Plague are excellent and I'd definitely recommend them to a new listener.

Rage Against the Machine - Battle of Los Angelas. Amazing album, accessible but at the same time it's the band at the top of their game. Give it a listen and enjoy.

Um...Chris Barnes is one of the reasons to listen to CC. Tomb of the Mutilated and Butchered at Birth are classic death metal albums.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells or Elephant, they're both really good
Beck - Odelay
Rage Against the Machine - their selftitled or Battle for LA
Nirvana - if you're a very beginner, I'd actually suggest their best of with the black cover

Gross. Those albums are just excessively dull. The Bleeding is decent, but the first three are some of the most uninspired, boring, and mind-numbingly repetitive albums I've ever head, from any genre.

Radiohead - OK Computer
Metal Church - Metal Church
Porcupine Tree - Some people here recommend In Absentia first. I started off with Deadwing and it worked, though.
Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Dredg - Catch Without Arms

Morbid Angel: Altars of Madness
Motley Crue: Just get the Red, White, and Crue album. The first disc is literally all you need.
Pain of Salvation: Remedy Lane
Cannibal Corpse: Anything except Vile and Gallery of Suicide
The Offspring: Everything.
Alice Cooper: Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome to My Nightmare
Rage Against the Machine: S/T
Porcupine Tree: Deadwing, In Absentia
Rancid: ...And Out Come the Wolves
Judas Priest: Stained Class, Screaming For Vengeance

Do it all, and then marry me.

Anyway, for best albums to start with, I would definitely go with (as good and generally accessible representations of each band):

Radiohead - OK Computer
Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane
The Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Nirvana - Nevermind

Those are all bands for which I have every album, and for some it's not even my favourite album by that band but the one I think is best for a new listener.

Im going to say get all of the Crue and Skid Row and start from the beginning.

Pain of Salvation I strongly suggest you avoid.....listening to it is...a lesson in confusion, anger, disgust and annoyance. You recognize some obvious talent...but will fail to understand or hear music that makes you want to listen to it ever again.

and TDOL...despite the obvious humor of the above jab....you'll find many many posters here who share my opinion. Most of them are in some kind of a P.O.S closet...acting the dutiful part of fanboy while failing to comprehend how this music could ever have gotten so much hype as it has.

Beggars is Thrice's best album...

I HIGHLY disagree.  I can understand where you're coming from, but I will take The Artist in the Ambulance or Vheissu over Beggars any day.  They are extremely different albums, but I can't get into Beggars nearly as much.

Motley Crue
Pain of Salvation
The Offspring
Rage Against the Machine
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
I'll list the ones I got into each band with:
British Steel
The Number Of The Beast

:tup

El Barto complainted about British Steel and many people-cept UMH-say not to start with the Number of the Beast.

Whattodo whattodo?
Start with Powerslave. It's where I started.

Another great choice. Definitely one of those two. You're probably familiar with at least three or four songs of TNOTB already, so that's the place I see people usually start.

And with Judas Priest, Screaming For Vengeance is another good starting point.

I second Powerslave for Maiden. Great album!

we could go round in circles about maiden all day..because I can't believe she won't start with Seventh Son....which is, of course, where she should start.

That is also an excellent starting place. I'd say those two are probably the best introductions to classic Maiden.

She should start with Iron Maiden and go chronologically from there.

GAH.

Well, at least I know what Maiden albums NOT to listen to...:P I'll figure my starting point out. (Technically I've already started...just not by album.)

To anyone who recommended Radiohead's OK Computer--it was EXCELLENT. Somewhat Pink Floyd-ish, chill and different. Thank you so much!

Deadwing is up next. :)

Thanks to everyone who has posted here so far-- you have no idea how grateful I am.  :heart

It could be. :neverusethis:

Nah, just kidding. I know Arcaeus recommended some on the 1st page.

EDIT: Okay, so I just finished listening to Deadwing (the song)...in all honesty, that was one of the most incredible things I've ever heard. Wow.

One song in and I'm already crazy about PT.

I just finished listening to Deadwing...that was one of the most incredible albums I have ever heard. (Check out pages 13, 14 and 15 of the chat thread to see my reaction :p). I'm actually at a loss for words it was so incredible.

I'll give a full review once I stop being so mind-blown by it's awesomeness.

Wait until you check out the other PT albums. Deadwing is probably my favorite but they are all epic in their own way.

TDoL, with Porcupine Tree, listen to In Absentia next, and then Lightbulb Sun. And as stated in the chat thread, don't wear pants while you listen to them, for obvious reasons.

Is that ever wise advice if you know numbers IRL?

NINJA EDIT - But I agree, In Absentia next, then Lightbulb Sun.

Hey, but if I'm listening to PT, he won't dare come near.

EDIT: New band added to the list!

For Meshuugah, I'd recommend Catch Thirtythree.

Uh, ObZen is definitely the best place to start with Meshuggah.  I'm not saying it's their best, but I would definitely recommend giving that one a listen first.
