Listening to ITPoE pt.1 prompted me to ask this question because the song is really really good. I voted for it.
I'm guessing TCoT will be #1. Also, never realized that Prophets of War is "P.O.W." hehe
ITPoE will win this. And I know it's the best song from every way of looking at it.
However, Repentence is my favorite off that list. So I voted for that. I don't expect anyone else to.
I wish ITPOE was one choice instead of 2... also wish we could've picked our Top 3 or 4 instead of just one, but it's not my poll ;)
Anyways, I went with "The Count Of Tuscany".
-Marc.
Went with ITPOE Pt 1. If it was one track I would've went with Repentence.

The Count Of Tuscany. In The Presence Of Enemies would be #2.
A Nightmare to Remember, didn't even have to think about it.
TCOT.
ITPOE Pt. 1 barely edges out TCOT.
Wanted to do TBOT, but I guess ITPoE1

I don't get this. You wanted to go with TBOT but didn't?
Why not?
TCOT yay I tied this all up

It's pretty close for me. Could have been either.
TCOT easily
The Count of Tuscany, almost without a doubt- but if ItPoE was counted as only one song, I would think it a lot more.
TBOT
In The Presence of Enemies pt.1 got my vote. It is lyrically and musicaly their best song of the last 2 releases.
TCoT 1st with the full ItPoE 2nd.

I think so. TCoT is a pretty close second though. Its highs are higher, but it's a little bit inconsistent.
Repentance would be my third choice.
-J
TCOT is the only song out of those that is in my top 10, so the choice was fairly simple.
TCoT. Very easy decision.
The Dark Eternal Night.
loljk
TCOT.
for just a simple rock song, I love AROP
ITPOE Pt. 1 easily.
For me it's Wither, but TCOT, TMOLS and ITPOE1 were fairly close.
The Ministry of Lost Souls
If ITPoE was listed as one song it would get my vote. But I'll give it to The Count
TCOT just stands above the rest, for me at least.

The Ministry of Lost Souls
My vote as well. When I evaluate a song, lyrics are important. That takes a song to the next level. TCoT's mediocre lyrics squash it from the running in my eyes.
Honorable mention to Forsaken for an incredible chorus

What's wrong with Forsaken's chorus?
I really like Forsaken, probably my 2nd or 3rd favourite on SC.
I'll let Mr. Sylvester (lateralus88) explain that one, if he sees this.
Forsaken is probably in my DT top 15

It is very bland. Really, the bland chorus is what made the song pretty forgettable for me.
I voted for TCOT.
Each to their own I guess. When I first heard it my jaw dropped

+1

My jaw didn't drop, but I do love it.
I was listening to Forsaken at my school after the release of SC. When Forsaken played everyone loved it and wanted to know who DT was. They all ran in fear when TDEN played soon after :metal
The Count Of Tuscany, by a cake. :metal
TCOT
I guess I was wrong, I seriously thought ITPoE would win. Maybe it's because The Count is still so new.
Prophets of War
Can't tell if serious
I went with TBOT, mainly because it was a huge grower on me over time. I definably think either TCOT or ITPOE pt.1 can easily be in #1 though.
TCOT! and then
ITPOE as a whole
ANTR
TMOLS
TBOT
yeah top 5...

I prefer The Count myself, but I really figured people worshiped ITPoE as the pinnacle of DT.
Can't say I ever got that impression myself. I knew part 1 was popular, but I didn't actually expect it to do so well in this poll, even if it is still quite a way behind TCOT.
ItPoE Pt. 1 with some consideration. If part 2 was included, there would've been no consideration necessary.
But damn, tCoT is slaughtering.
"the longer, the better" this is the perfect theory fit for DT.

No, it isn't. SDOIT is not really the best DT song (imo) and Wait For Sleep hardly the worst (which seems like it's a common opinion here).
Yeah. I'd listen to The Mirror over A Nightmare to Remember anytime.

Or even Wither for that matter. I just never got into ANtR.
Did you just quote yourself?
ITPOE Pt 1.
TCOT would probably be my choice if the song had better lyrics.

And most prog bands it seems. If you look at a lot of bands in that vein it seems that their longer are almost always at the top of peoples' Top 10 lists. I've heard people argue that "well bands take more time to create longer songs" as if that's some mark of quality. As for DT, I think most of their longer songs nowadays are stuffed with filler crap and needless instrumental parts. There are some great parts, don't get me wrong, but there is no reason for those songs to be as long as they are. They just don't seem to get the love and care that you can actually hear in the older "epic" songs, where every note actually meant something.
Well, I must say that I appriciate their longer songs more for the most part. It's probably that epic feel to'em that makes'em so good, like TCOT, ITPOE, 8VM etc etc, They're like a journey of perfection for me! They have more interesting and really freaking awesome stuff compared to Wither, POW, Never Enough, allthough I like them as well
There is just more potential for greatness

That's because they really did mean something back then - they had something to prove to fans and critics alike, that they were something exciting and "new" and wanted approval and attention. Now that they have that, it may sound like they are trying a bit less, or putting "filler crap and needless instrumental parts", but part of it might also be that they are growing/changing/experimenting in a direction (or two) that doesn't sound like something they've done before, so it could come off as being long for length's sake. I think plenty of their 10+ minute songs have been fairly good lately, you just have to not compare them to the likes of "Metropolis" or "Learning To Live" or "Scarred" or "Voices"... they're entirely different beasts, performed by nearly an entirely different band. Sure it's only a different keyboardist now, but their writing and composing and arranging styles have changed too.
Consequently, we're not getting "Learning To Live" every album, which is completely fine with me! I enjoy hearing NEW and FRESH music, even if it may sound a bit tired or uninspired, it's still different, and if it's not an instantly lovable track, I try to stay positive and keep listening, hoping it'll click or that I'll "get it" or at least, appreciate it a bit more.
-Marc.
ItPoE part 2. Shame on y'all for not giving it attention.
It's followed by tMoLS and ItPoE part 1.
Tuscany. And I rather like Forsaken's chorus; the whole song is solid.

I'll give you bloated, but I don't find it uninteresting at all.
The cover of Stargazer eclipses by far EVERY original track on the past two albums. In fact, my top three songs from the past two albums all come from the covers disc that came with BC&SL - with the Queen medley coming in a very very close second, followed by the Zebra cover...
