Title: Rush Recommendations
Post by: juice on August 16, 2010, 08:31:44 PM
So I'm giving Rush a chance and I don't know where to start.  What album is a good way to get into Rush?  For your information I've heard 2112 the song and I think it's awesome.

Moving Pictures and Hemispheres

The best albums to start with are pretty much universally accepted to be Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Not my two favorites, but to a new listener they are the two I'd suggest.

Get these albums first -
2112
A Farewell To Kings
Hemispheres
Permanent Waves
Moving Pictures

After that, if you like the direction PEW and MP move in, I'd go with getting Signals and Grace Under Pressure afterwards. Also, it wouldn't hurt to go backwards and get their first three albums, Rush, Fly By Night and Caress Of Steel.

Power Windows

Always a good decision

First album should always be Moving Pictures.  Then go chronologically from 2112 to Permanent Waves, then get Power Windows, Counterparts, and S&A.  Then buy the Caravan/BU2B single.  Then get everything else.

By the way, Hemispheres and A Farewell To Kings are their best albums.

Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

Good thing then that the question isn't what the best album is; it is what is the best album to start with. ;)

You can't go wrong with Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures

I know, I'm just saying  I agree Moving Pictures is the best place to start.

Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are definitely the best place to start. After that, I'd suggest 2112 and Hemispheres, then Counterparts and Fly By Night.

any rush album is a great album imo.

Except for Test for Echo.

And Presto.

And Vapor Trails.

And Rush.

And...well, you get the point. :p

Still the best band ever, though. :)

Both albums have good songs, for sure, but great albums?  Meh.  Neither are bad, but neither are great.

Snakes and Arrows was a great start for me. Still, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are good starts. I love A Farewell to Kings.

Honestly, I can't help but just recommend their greatest hits album. None of their albums really stand out as 'amazing' or even 'great' to me, but each one has a few ridiculously awesome songs.
