Title: The Indie Rock/Pop Thread
Post by: Sigz on July 04, 2010, 12:08:22 AM
Discuss your favorite bands here. If you don't like it, kindly stay out kthnx.

I've been obsessing over Au Revoir Simone and Modest Mouse lately, especially ARS. Still Night, Still Life is a beautiful, beautiful album.

Arcade Fire is a great indie band to check out; their first album, Funeral, is awesome, and the second, Neon Bible, is very good, too.

Oh yeah, I have Funeral, it's pretty good. You guys need to check out Parades's debut album Foreign Tapes, just came out this year.

Well I'm not the biggest indie fan in the world, but my favorites right now:

Eisley (Their first album, Room Noises, is one of my favorite albums ever)

Modest Mouse

Just checked out the Modest Mouse song... I like it. At first I was like "Uhhhhhhhh", but by the end of the song I was enjoying it. Very interesting and refreshing. How is the rest of their catalog? Is it worthwhile to check out?

The Au Revoir song wasn't really anything special to me (although I did enjoy the eye candy :eyebrows:). It wasn't bad, just nothing that I would go out of my way to discover more from.

And I just listened to Eisley.... FUCKING AWESOME!  :metal :metal :metal :metal Definitely gonna check out more from them.

I'll check out the others you all mentioned tomorrow morning. Keep them coming!

Eisley is amazing. Modest Mouse hasn't grabbed me just yet, but I'll keep trying, as I do want to get into them.

Anyone here like Trespassers William, Brand New, The Books, or Noah and the Whale? Starting to get familiar with 'em.

Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, Phantogram.

definitely Yeasayer's new album Odd Blood.  Has a very good 80's vibe to it.

I like Modest Mouse, but I am partial to their newer, more commercial material.  For example, I think We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is really good and The Lonesome Crowded West sucks.

Also, I occasionally see the Flaming Lips referred to as indie rock, so if they qualify, they are a MUST check out band.  Their last four albums are all kinds of awesome, every one of 'em.

I only have Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, but its great, so I need to get more of their stuff.  Suggestions?

The Decemberists are pretty awesome.  Listened to most of The Crane Wife yesterday.  "The Island" is like indie prog, its amazing!

And I stand by what I've always said: Neon Bible > Funeral

I could never get into them mainly because Colin Meloy has a really grating voice with an annoying warble. The music itself wasn't really anything to write home about either except for the first 6 minutes of The Tain (Parts 1 and 2) which are incredible.

Been dying to check out Arcade Fire.

Bright Eyes - "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" is a perfect album as far as I'm concerned.

Here's a song from the record called "First Day of My Life." It's a really sweet tune
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwFS69nA-1w

Ben Kweller - "Changing Horses" is a great folk album with a slight country feel.

From the record, "Ballad of Wendy Baker." Sad!

Anyone here (besides Soundscape - I know he does!) like Cloud Cult? They're an experimental indie rock/pop band... just learned about 'em recently, grabbed Light Chasers, and this album is damn good. Probably in my top ten for 2010 (and that's saying something, I have about 40+ albums from this year so far and it's shaping up to be a great start to the decade).

Narrow Stairs is pretty good, but that is about it.  Most of the songs are at least good, but not a single one is what I would call great.  I do like "Pity and Fear" more than most Death Cab fans seem to, however.  Overall, it was definitely a massive drop-off from the previous three records, all of which are stellar.

I don't even know if this is Indie, but well... Anyone enjoy Kings of Convenience? Not my favorite band ever but they have some cool soft tunes that can be pretty relaxing.

Recommendations: I'd rather dance with you, Failure, The build up, Know How

The singer (Erlend Øye) also has another band, The Whitest Boy Alive that is a bit more guitar driven (not that much). Not as good as Kings imo, but still decent.

Recommendations: Burning, Golden Cage, Done with you

How good is their latest (2009?) album? I recall thinking their debut was ok and the second album being pretty good (all songs I cited except Failure are from that one).

EDIT: Checking Wikipedia, didn't know about "Versus"... Turns out the one I like is their third, "Quiet is the new loud".

So I'd almost entirely dismissed indie for some reason until about a month ago, and I've basically only been listening to it since. It's the most exciting time in my music taste I've ever had, every single album I'm listening to is amazing at the minute and there are more to come.

And yeah, Sonata, I listened to quite a bit of KoC when you sent them in for my roulette and loved them, so I plan to check them out soon.  :D

Generally a lot lo-fi stuff gets classified as Indie. Lots of singer-songwriter stuff that's just a touch not quite singer-songwriter.

what exactly constitutes "Indie" music? Something I've never really understood.

it really connotates that a band is not on a major label, and is putting out its own music via an independent label or pressing it themselves. I never thought of it as a genre of music. The term became popular during the Seattle grunge movement, when basically Sub Pop records had a few major bands ( Nirvana, Soundgarden) leave their Inde label and move to a major label ( Nirvana going form SubPop to Geffen) etc etc.. I think the internet and Youtube etc has clouded that since there are now many ways and mediums to get music to be heard, it used to be that you had to have a piece of vinyl to present to play on the radio..

Not sure if these guys are too electronic for this thread but... PASSION PIT.  These guys are great songwriters and their production is very interesting in a proggy kind of way.  They definitely have that indie vibe though that should make them relevant here.  If you check them out, give "Moth's Wings" a listen... it's EPIC!

Just bought the album Passive Me, Aggressive You by a band called The Naked and Famous.  Somebody on here recommended it to me a while back... I can now confirm that it is indeed awesome!  To me, they sound like a mix of Passion Pit, Pure Reason Revolution, Nine Inch Nails, and later Radiohead.  Check out the song "Young Blood" if you like super-catchy stuff!  Also, the production is AWESOME!

This band oscillates between Indie and Alternative Rock. Seriously, listen to this band and (start with) this album. (Maybe they are more New Wave, but whatever. This thread fits a lot of stuff)

** The Sounds - Crossing the Rubicon ** GET IT NOW

Also, Scouting for Girls - Scouting for Girls -- This is if you like to feel in a happy mood. Great record, imo.

Too much retro vibe (that I don't like) in this album.

Fair enough, I can see why it would turn someone off.

Everyone should check out Humbug By Arctic Monkeys too, my favourite album recently.

Arcade Fire is by far the best them when it comes to Indie. Funeral, Neon Bible and The Suburbs are all brilliantly written, especially the first.

Wake up  :heart

I listened to them the other day. I didn't get to finish the album, but I've been meaning to listen to it again because I enjoyed it.

:lol no, apparently my obvious reference to the "too indie to be known" joke wasn't properly conveyed.

It's kind of hard not to like them. They're super catchy, and just fun to listen to.

Indie band of the week: Portugal. The Man.

Their latest album In the Mountain in the Cloud has got to be one of, if not the best albums of 2011 so far. Every song is just wonderful, and makes you want to keep listening. My favorite song on the album is Got it All (This Can't Be Living Now), although every song is so good it's hard to put one above the other. My favorite album by them though has to be Censored Colors. It's just so good. Out and In and In and Out is wonderful song, as well as 1989, and Lay Me Back Down.

So basically what I was trying to say in this post is: LISTEN TO PORTUGAL. THE MAN.

Bump.
Anyone here who listens to The War on Drugs? Their latest album, "Slave Ambient" is really good, I would recommend it to anyone who likes Indie Rock, has some nice Ambient parts on it as well.  :tup
Music-wise a lot of people have said that it's a mix of Bob Dylan, Shoegaze, Ambient, Americana, Indie-Rock and Tom Petty.
I don't know, but it's great never the less.  :D
