So, i searched around a bit but didn't find a thread about it.
Anyhow, Firefly is a space western tv-show, made by Joss Whedon. (who has also made Buffy the vampire slayer, Angel and Dollhouse to name a few)
It takes place in the future, and focuses on a crew of a firefly-type spaceship.
The show aired back in 2002, but got canceled after 14 episodes.
However, they made a movie in 2005 called "Serenity", which is set after the events in the tv-show.
I've never been a huge fan of sci-fi, but this show surprised me in a good way.
Sure it isn't as much sci-fi as other tv-shows, but i love the mix of different genres.
What i think stands out the most is the characters, being very unique.
It took a few episodes to really get into the show, but once i did it really grew on me, and now i would consider it one of the best shows i've seen.
The movie "Serenity" was also really good, maybe even better then the tv-show, i really liked the story.
Anyhow, let the discussion/flaming begin. :D

And that's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth.

I came in this thread thinking this;
But oh well.
-
We don't get em ere in Oshtraya.
-
I remember watching the movie, which was pretty good, but I never really watched the show.
-
Kaylee:Am I pretty?
Wash: If was unwed I would take you in a manly fashion
Kaylee: because I am pretty?
Wash: because you are pretty.
Cheers to one of the best shows I ever seen. Dam you Fox!
-
River: "Jayne is a girl's name"
I laughed so hard at that scene. :lol

TV show > movie

you'll find this show has a few big fans on the board (me included). One of my favorite shows :hat

And me. However, I don't think Serenity should have ended the story. It really provided very little closure for most characters. (ok it provided extreme closure for two fo them).
-
Firefly is one of those things that is constantly mentioned on the internet but never in the real world. Cthulu is another. People always fucking harp on about Cthulu on the internet. Never heard the word spoken.
This is fairly tangential. I just wanted to get that out of my system. Mainly the Cthulu bit, actually.
-
There's a new Serenity one-shot comic, sort of an obituary for Wash written by Patton Oswalt. Its good, but I think I prefer "Better Days."
In other not-so-new-news I :heart Firefly.
"Been running on six months I ain't had nothing 'twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!"
"Oh God! I can't know that!"
"...I could stand to hear a bit more."
-
"Do you wanna run this ship?"
"Yea"
"Well.................you can't!"
-
Great show, definitely a shame that it only consists of a movie and 14 episodes, but because of that it's even more special.
-
Don't forget the comic books! Especially when we're supposed to get a Shepherd Book origin story graphic novel sometime later this year!
-
Don't forget the comic books! Especially when we're supposed to get a Shepherd Book origin story graphic novel sometime later this year!
Woooaahhhhh, what? When did this happen?
-
There was a three-part Serenity prequel comic when the movie came out, called "Those Left Behind." Last year there was another three-part called "Better Days." Right now theres a one-shot written by Patton Oswalt thats a tribute to Wash. Later this year there's supposed to be a full-blown graphic novel about Book. You can get the first two in paperback now.
-
I know about the serenity prequel, but not about book. But on the other hand, I dunno if I want to know everything about him, his mystery is awesome.
-
Firefly is the best however many minutes i've ever spent in front of a television.
-
"He is my husband."
"Well, who in this universe AINT?"
:lol
-
Just watched the second episode (I had watched the first one a long time ago). It clicked and I love it. Looking forward to seeing the movie, as I heard it was fantastic.
-
Watch the series before you watch the movie.
-
Yeah, I saw Serenity on Netflix instant watch but it said it was a continuation of Firefly, so I'm gonna watch it all in order.

I already do. :lol
-
My custom user title on here used to be "Official Joss Whedon Fanboy". So yeah, I really love Firefly.
-
Bluray Firefly is only available in region 1 and 4. Not 2 (Europe). So now I have to pay £33 excluding shipping to get it imported (region free thankfully) >:(
-
I have watched everything.
I really wish there was more. One of the best shows ever. The movie was so good as well. And:

Dang you! I was watching the movie with your post in the back of my mind the whole time. And when the second character's closure came...it was emotional, maaaaan. I couldn't believe it even knowing what you had said. It was unpredictable.
-
I saw it coming a mile away.
lol you know someone out there will say it was predictable for some odd reason. Poor wash. :(
-
Considering Joss Whedon's stuff overall, it was pretty predictable that someone was going to die in a sudden and unexpected way.
-
Great show. Recently watched it (and the movie) on my brother's recommendation. Very well done.

Would have been better if Mal had taken out someone's eye with his thumb.

It still happened unpredictably. Then again, I'm very unfamiliar with his stuff.
Poor Wash.
-
I remember watching the movie, which was pretty good, but I never really watched the show.
I've just recently actually started watching the show, and god damn is it good. I'm up to "Our Mrs. Reynolds," and I already agree with faemir in that it is by far the best time I've had watching anything television related.
-
I miss this show/movie. Such an amazing but short story.
-
Definitely watch the show before watching the movie. Things fall into place better and you have a better understanding of the characters and their interaction. I saw the movie first and thought Mal was an asshole, who are these people and why don't I relate to them, who in the hell is this Shepherd guy and so on and so on. Watching the show puts everything into perspective and makes the movie and MUCH better experience.
I really wish I could go back in time and tell Joss DON'T give this show to TNT, give it to Sci-Fi! This is why a time machine should be invented.
-
I was watching it and my gf was sitting next to me reading a book and listeting and having an occasional glance. And she made a very good point of the whole show being a sort of Bold and the Beautiful for nerds with all the silly drama stuff.
For me, the season started to grow stale as it went onward. It started really well but yeah it got to kind of boring. Could also be because I knew it ended after the first season so nothing spectacular wasn't going to happen (I haven't finished it yet). Serenity was awesome though.
-
:hefdaddy love it

Storytime...
A few years ago I saw Serenity on TV. I literally watched the first ten/fifteen minutes, and had to go do some other stuff. I was really enjoying it and it had me interested.
This exact same thing has happened at least two more times in the recent years.
Now, about a month ago, I bought the Special edition of the movie. However, I never got around to watching it.
Then last week, I decided that since I havent watched the whole thing yet, I might as well watch the series before I watch the movie. So I ordered the complete series and it just got here last night.
So tonight I just started watching Firefly (2 episodes in) and I'm really enjoying it a lot. Figured I'd watch the show first, then (finally) watch the movie, lol.
-
Good show, but I didn't like how every episode is mostly self-contained. So much so that they didn't even have to air them in the right order for it to make sense. A strong over-arching plot is what I like to see in shows. Also, aside from Nathan Fillion, I didn't think the cast was too spectacular (good, just not spectacular).
-
I think they did the self-containment thing fine.
<3 Firefly, may have to watch Serenity again.
-
Yes, they did do it fine, which is my complaint.
-
Easily my favorite tv show. It's perfect for what it is and doesn't try to overreach (cough *BSG* cough). Great humor, gorgeous women, sharp dialogue, good suspense. The episode where Mal is trying to save the ship and flashing back to building the crew is some of the greatest tv ever. Another case of borked up marketing. :(
-
I rented the box set and watched it when I was laid up in bed with food poisoning. It may be my favourite TV show ever. I own the DVD box set. The Blu-Ray set is released in the UK on 19 September. My 40th birthday is on 21st September. That ties in quite nicely...
-
Kaylee is my waifu.
-
Forgot to come back in here, lol.
Finished it about 2 weeks ago, and also watched Serenity. Definately one of my favorite TV shows.
Finally getting to watch all of Serenity, I honestly didnt like it as much, but I appreciate them trying to close up the show in a proper way after it was cancelled.
Favorite characters are Jayne and Kaylee.
-
Reviving thus thread, because I caved in and finally watched it.
Maybe it's because it has been hyped so much in my presence, but IMHO it's nowhere near as good as the hype says it is.
For one, the show tried to be too many things at the same time. A Space Western, a thriller, a Mission Impossible etc etc.
And the characters also are pretty much all over the place. The preacher for example, or the little girl.
Nice try and some good episodes, but I think there was a reason it got cancelled.
Also, way too violent at times.
rumborak

Rumby, I understand your objections. I will now reply in depth to each of your arguments.

It took me a while to get into Firefly, but all that it took was a rewatch of the first episode when I wasn't dead tired :lol
Criminally underrated show/movie.

:lol

Actually, I never watched it while it aired. In fact I avoided it for years because of how hyped it was. Eventually I said "screw it, I'll suffer through an episode just to say that I did".
It is now in my top 5 Sci-Fi shows ever.
-

Yes :neverusethis:
Also, see the Joss Whedon Effect.
-
WE love it because it's one of the best shows ever. Pretty simple.
-
Personally I think one of the reasons why I loved it so much was the fact that it had all those elements to it. The show was truly unique in that way, blending different movie-genres like Western with Space, and doing it in a good way.
Great characters, that made me really interested in watching, and I'd also add that the movie, "Serenity" was fantastic, maybe even better then the show.
-

Similar for me. It's a gorgeously written show, funny and entertaining but with some exciting and clever stuff in there as well. I can see what Rumby is saying about some of the characters seeming all over the place, but that's largely because the series was meant to continue on for a few seasons, and so the story was only part-told.
I think Whedon did a great job of making every character interesting.
Nice try and some good episodes, but I think there was a reason it got cancelled.
Actually it got cancelled because it didn't do very well at the time, which was not helped by the fact that Fox insisted on airing the episodes out of order. And while the stories are largely self-contained, they are not entirely so, and the character and relationship development is what makes it such an enjoyable series.
Basically, Fox are imbeciles, but are now lucky enough to be getting a lot from DVD sales.

Mal: "You wanna run this ship!?"
Jayne: "Yes!"
Mal: "Well...you can't."
So great. :lol

I love Whedon's dialogue, so many great moments like that. :lol
-
I actually saw Serenity in theaters without knowing anything about Firefly and loved it. The next year I heard about Firefly, but I didn't actually get the DVDs for another year after that. I'm not sure why I waited so long. Its funny, entertaining, has fantastic characters that are all balanced out nicely in the cast, and space western aesthetic that they pulled off is just all kinds of cool, but it never feels cheesy.
-
My appreciation for the series actually went up with the second half of the episodes. Some good ones there for sure. And yeah, bummer they canceled it, it had a lot of potential.
A bit bummed about the movie though. They managed to deprive the series of its unique feature, the light-hearted ness. Especially Kaylee who has a beautiful smile was a loss for the movie. You could barely see their faces anyway, everything was barely lit. Good plot though.
Only one glaring plot hole with the series were the Reavers. I find it hard to believe that an army of zombies is flying a highly advanced spaceship.
rumborak
-
It was indeed all over the place with certain characters, but I think Whedon did that on purpose thinking he would have a lot more time to expand slowly on each. The preacher was obviously a master fighter, but we only got a small glance of that. It only raised more questions. We still had so much more to learn about the Reavers, River, or the central planets' role in all this.
The "irrational love" effect is just form people's dismay at something that was so very unique with so great a potential.

One of the few shows where I didn't need to see a blueprint to visualize the ship in its entirety. They did a good job of showing the whole ship and where different areas connect.

Bumping this coz I'm watching some episodes now. :)
I really like this series. And I never really heard of it until AFTER I saw "Serenity" twice at the full-price theater (that's how much I enjoyed it).

Has anyone ever played Firefly the game?
https://www.amazon.com/Gale-Force-9-GF9-FIRE001-Firefly/dp/0992251656/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426768250&sr=8-2&keywords=firefly
(https://www.blastr.com/sites/blastr/files/styles/media_gallery_image/public/FireflyGame021313.jpg)
I've had this game for a few months now. I absolutely love it. My girlfriend and I play it all the time (she got me into Firefly). It took about three or four games to really get the rules down, but once you figure them out, the game is a real blast. I've never played with more than two people, but my guess is the game would get significantly more challenging.
There are several expantions for it. There are two or three expansions that add extra cards and an extra playing piece, and then there is an expansion that actually makes the board bigger and really increases the scope of the game.
$34 on Amazon is actually pretty cheap. I paid $50 in Barnes and Noble.
-
Finally got to play the board game with more than two people this weekend. A group of four allowed for a much more dynamic game. It took almost 4 hours to complete one of the easier stories.

-
Wow, that looks pretty cool! It can be hard to find Firefly fans, but if you can find them, I'm sure they'd be up for playing the game at least once or twice. That's the way to do it, too; make it a social event, complete with food and drink, while you wander the galaxy in a Firefly-class ship.
-
It can be hard to find Firefly fans
Maybe for you. I can't even tell you how many friends and random people have given me the "YOU'VE NEVER SEEN FIREFLY?!" speech. I finally started it last night and am about halfway through. I'm enjoying it, but it's not quite living up to the hype.
-

Once you're done...you'll be hooked. ;) Out of Gas and the movie are worth the price of admission alone.
-
Nothing lives up to the hype. Ever. Any time something is hyped, it destroys the credibility of the person hyping it. The greater the hype, the greater the chance that whatever is being hyped will not live up to it.
On the other hand, I missed Firefly the first time around, but worked my way through the series on DVD because of the hype. I thought it was a great show. It wasn't OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS IS SO AWESOME I CAN DIE HAPPY NOW, but I thought it was great.
-
I watched Firefly completely at random on Netflix; I'd never heard anything about it before, and I loved it. It's one of my favorite shows. I probably still would have loved it even if I had heard stuff about it beforehand, but I definitely think there's an inherent risk in allowing your expectations to be built up too much.
-
Once you're done...you'll be hooked. ;) Out of Gas and the movie are worth the price of admission alone.
Oh, man...I'm pretty sure Out of Gas was the first time I sobbed like a little bitch during an episode of a TV show. Years later, that's proven a tough habit to break. Damn you, Joss Whedon!
There is a lot of hype around the show, and I wasn't instantly hooked either because it wasn't living up to it at the beginning, but it was still good enough to keep going, and by the time I was done, I considered it worthy of its cult-classic status.
-
I definetely thought the show was good, great even, but what makes me not absolutely love it is the fact that they didn't get to finish it. If they'd have gotten to tell the entire story from beginning to end, it may have had the potential to be one of the very best. But now that they didn't, I still pretty much only see this show as something that "could have been". That's not the show's fault, but it still brings it down for me. And yeah I know there's the movie, and that was an awesome movie, but it just feels like it could have been so much more.
-
Anyone following the progress of the Con Man spinoff?
-
but I definitely think there's an inherent risk in allowing your expectations to be built up too much.
Well, I don't necessarily agree that somebody is "allowing" their expectations to be built up when people are constantly telling them it's the BEST SHOW EVER and acting like there is something wrong with a person for not having seen it yet. I have one friend who was actually giving me shit because I don't think it's objectively the best show ever, and he's trying to justify it by saying things like "Well, you're not into Star Trek and this and this..." Actually, I love most things space and I've really been enjoying the show, I just don't think it's the greatest show ever made. It doesn't require any further explanation than that- not everybody is going to agree with you. And by "you" I mean this partcular friend who is geting on my nerves, not you guys :lol
Anyway, Out of Gas was indeed great, and I also really liked War Stories. The more suffering, the better :lol
About to finish the series up now, and then I'll watch Serenity next week because I have a film festival this weekend.
-
I probably liked Serenity even more than the show actually. I remember finally founding out who the Reavers actually were had quite the emotional impact.
-
I probably liked Serenity even more than the show actually. I remember finally founding out who the Reavers actually were had quite the emotional impact.
Agreed. The movie was great. And the reavers stuff was really disturbing and cool.
-
well lucky for us they green lighted this movie. With the cancellation of the show during it's 1st season, they were not able to flush the storyline out over seasons. Too bad really.
-
My experience of this show was I guess similar to Jackie’s. I was given ripped files of the entire thing by a close friend with whom I am constantly trading recommendations of all media. He sat me through the first episode and explained why he thought it was one of the best TV shows ever made. Several years later, I had a tumblrina girlfriend who could religiously spout quotes from the show at will.
Under her “guidance”, I sat through five or six episodes, at which point I gave up. The show was tolerable at best, I guess, but I feel inclined to this day to think of it as being utter shite because it fell so remarkably short of what I was sold.

Forgot to post here that I finished the series the other day and oh man, Early is one of my favorite characters! Kinda wish there was more of him...
-
Have you seen Serenity yet?

Yeah, he was great. Seemingly operating in a complete emotional vacuum, you get glimpses of his "real" feelings on a few things along the way, but at the end, nope, he's emotionally devoid. Flying off into space alone to ultimately die, probably slowly, he's thinking "Well, here I am..."
-
Interesting. According to Joss Whedon, Jubal Early survived.

Hopefully he has his own series one day :lol
And no, I haven't watched Serenity yet because some other asshole checked it out from the video store while I was busy watching the show. Bastards.

FTFY
;)

Maybe for you. I can't even tell you how many friends and random people have given me the "YOU'VE NEVER SEEN FIREFLY?!" speech. I finally started it last night and am about halfway through. I'm enjoying it, but it's not quite living up to the hype.
Same for me. Just can't get into it. When there is this much hype and you don't see it, it really makes it even worse.
-

We don't know much more. But in this interview (https://www.moviesonline.ca/movienews_6536.html), we have this:
----------
The Dude: You also have to bring back Jubal Early, man. (Jubal Early was the bounty hunter on the final Firefly episode entitled "Objects in Space," which Whedon wrote and directed, and which I had watched the previous evening. Jubal Early was played by Richard Brooks ).
Joss Whedon: I know! Especially because I love that character.
The Dude: It would be fitting if he survived that.
Joss Whedon: Oh, I know he survived.
----------
Then they move on to other topics.

Haven't been to those in ages. :o
-
Yeah, my internet is crappy and I can't really download/stream stuff so I have a membership at an awesome little video store. Also it's great to talk to the employees and get recommendations and whatnot :D
Joss Whedon: Oh, I know he survived.
Oh man, that's awesome!

Joss, you devilish little tease...

Nice, yea I have no problem renting and I have a few places nearby but I just haven't had a reason yet to rent given the services available online.
-
My friend just showed me Serenity, so I didn't have to wait for the library to get it to me! I really enjoyed it, a nice wrap-up considering the circumstances. And I have to say, they probably killed off my least favorite of the main characters :lol
-
So I've never seen the Serenity movie that was made after the show ended. I decided to binge watch the show again before doing so. I got through 8 episodes over the weekend. Such a great show. I can't get over that it only made it one season.
I ordered a few expansions for the board game earlier today.
I picked up the Kalidasa expansion. Comes with another section of the Verse. Basically the same as the Blue Sun expansion, but for the right side of the board.
I picked up some colored dice so each player can have their own unique to their ship.

I also picked up some blank game pieces. They have much better detail than the stock pieces and you can customize them to look however you want.

I'd like to buy this eventually as it is not yet out. It's a one piece vinyl mat that combines the original board and expansions into one unit. It's not a deal breaker, but having to play a game with a board that breaks apart into three pieces can be a PITA if someone knocks it hard enough.

I gotta admit, I've never played the game and tend to avoid games based on movies or TV shows, but that looks pretty cool.
-
It's hands down the best board game I've played. Even if someone has never seen the show, it does great on it's own. I'd highly recommend it. You're free to do whatever you desire and the game manges to be completely balanced all the time. It's perfect.
-

Most such games are crap, but the Buffy board game that came out after Season 4 was awesome.
-
Just watched Serenity last night. I enjoyed it, but all it did was make me sad that the show didn't continue. I would have loved an entire episode or two dedicated to exploring Miranda.
Wash's death pissed me off and it seemed unnecessary/forced.
-
Every long-running Joss Whedon show eventually loses main characters. Firefly wasn't on the air long enough to lose any main characters, so I always assumed that Whedon took the opportunity to kill a few with the movie, as that would be his last chance to do so.
I didn't "like" it, either, but I have to admit that it actually makes sense. If you're a space cowboy, or fighting supernatural creatures, or whatever, it defies logic that no one close to you will ever meet an untimely demise. Sure, TV series have to keep things status quo for the most part, but it doesn't make much sense.
-
It also upped the stakes for the final fight: Anyone/everyone could die.
-
Both are great points. I change my opinion.
-
I was wondering when one of them was going to die, and when it turned out to be him I was like "Sweet" :lol
-
You didn't like Wash?
-
He was fine, but probably at the bottom of the list for me.
-
Yeah, all the characters were great. You always had a sense that there was more to them than we saw, and we saw a lot. But there were still motivations and secrets that it would have been cool to explore had the show continued. I suppose if someone had to die, I would've picked Wash, too.
-
That episode where he gets all whiny with Zoe about being close with Mal/doing shit without him made me dislike him a bit. I was like "Good, torture his ass for being such a brat" :lol
-
I could see Wash's point, though. Mal and Zoe have been through a lot of shit together, fought alongside each other for years. That gave them a connection, an intimacy if you will, that Wash would never share with Zoe. Not in the same way. It didn't help that whenever things got tough, Mal, Zoe, and of course Jayne would go deal with it, while Wash has to stay on board because he's the pilot. Great, he sits tight while his wife and the captain go save the world again. Some might see it as a pretty stupid type of jealousy, but that's the thing about feelings; they're not always rational.
-
IT was more than just Wash being left out of the Zoe/Malcom activities. Wasn't he upset that Malcom was putting her in unnecessary danger?
-
He may have been; it's been a while since I watched that one. But even if he was, the answer would be that neither Wash nor Mal could tell Zoe to back off anyway. She does what she wants.
-
Right. And yeah, he just came off as really whiny in that one, so it turned me off of him a bit.
-
I'm biased toward Wash as I am a huge Alan Tudyk fan. The episode you're referencing is probably my least favorite episode of his though. All the characters had one.
One thing that always got to me was how easily Malcom forgave Jayne. I get that they wanted Malcom's character to have those attributes, but let's be real, that stunt Jayne pulled at the hospital was a real dick move.
-
Agreed.
-
I always wondered if Jayne had something on Mal. I get that Mal wanted to have some kind of "hired muscle" on board, and there are certainly a few times Jayne saved everybody's asses. But Jayne was a mercenary, and I think he even said to Mal once or twice that if someone offerred him enough money, he'd betray Mal and the rest of the crew. To me, that is a very dangerous type of person to be dealing with, let alone trusting with your life.
Mal literally never knew when they'd be on some "mission" (or whatever they called their little adventures) which depended on Jayne showing up at a certain time and doing his part, but instead Jayne shows up with the bad guys and a shit-eating grin and says "Sorry Captain, they just offerred me too much money to turn down."

I don't recall there ever being "a few times". It was the central theme of one episode...and I suppose in The Train Job Jayne did kinda usurp command when Mal was unavailable. But there was only one incident of overt betrayal, and it was dealt with. (in very just and dramatic fashion)

RIP Shepherd (Ron Glass)

RIP Shepherd (Ron Glass)
Damn. That sucks. I loved Barney Miller. I'd say his character was the main reason, but the entire cast was great. I just have to make it out of 2016.
-
Yeah, as great as he was as Shepherd Book, he'll always be Detective Harris first to me. Very cool guy; a sad loss indeed.
-
Yea, heard about this yesterday. :(
Another in a long list of great celebrities to die this year.
