I think it is necessary to have a separate tour thread, that way, anyone who doesn't want to know the set list ahead of time for the tour, won't have it spoiled by reading the "regular" Rush thread. Make sense?
Anyway, we all know that they are playing all of Moving Pictures, Alex Lifeson said a while back that they were probably gonna bring back "Jacob's Ladder," Lifeson and Geddy Lee both indicated that it was probably time to bring "Closer to the Heart" back, and Lee and Lifeson both said in a recent interview that "Stick It Out" is a song that they have been dabbling with in rehearsals, but that Peart wasn't liking it, so who knows what will happen with that one.
Also, "The Body Electric" was recently added to the radio station on the Rush website, so you have to wonder if that is coming back, too.
Lastly, someone at the CP forum has claimed to be friends with someone in the lighting department, and that person recently emailed him a working set list the band has been toiling with, which looked like this (the a/b thing would seem to mean songs they would rotate from night to night):
1. 2112
2. Freewill
3. The Analog Kid
4. Big Money
5. Time Stand Still
6. A.Passage to Bangkok/B.Circumstances
7. Workin’ Them Angels
8. A.Show Don’t Tell/B. Subdivisions
9. Closer To The Heart
10. Tom Sawyer
11. Red Barchetta
12. YYZ
13. Limelight
Intermission
1. The Camera Eye
2. Witch Hunt
3. Vital Signs
4. Caravan
5. BU2B
6. A.The Enemy Within/ B. The Body Electric
7. A.Stick It Out/B. Cold Fire
8. A.Middletown Dreams/B. Marathon
9. Malignant Narcissism
10. Drum Solo
11. Hope/Broon's Bane
12. The Trees
13. Xanadu
14. Prelude: Hemispheres
15. The Spirit of Radio
Encore
1. Far Cry
2. Jacobs Ladder
3. Fly By Night/In The Mood
Looking it over, that looks like a set list I could see them doing.
-
I really hope Stick it Out stays out.

I really hope Stick it Out stays out.
This.
-
See my added info in the edit, fellas.
-
Holy fuck, if they play that list, I would honestly die happy. That's perhaps the best Rush Setlist I've seen.
If I had a choice, I'd choose set B too, simply because Subdivisions and Circumstances are some of my favorite Rush songs.
-
IF (big IF) that set list, were true, my thoughts are:
-I wonder if they would do the first half of "Xanadu" straight into "Hemispheres: Prelude" like they did on the CP tour.
-"Marathon," Middletown Dreams," "The Body Electric" and "The Enemy Within" have all not been played in 20+ years, so I think all of 'em deserve the every night treatment, if they are being brought back. Heck, if they are gonna tour next year, too, do two of them this year and then two of them next year. ;)
-I have been calling the return of "The Analog Kid" for a while now, so that wouldn't surprise me one bit. Same goes for "Time Stand Still."
-
I would definitely take B, too, Quad. I don't care about "Show Don't Tell," which is on A, and I want "Marathon" and "Cold Fire," which are on B. I would hate to not get "The Enemy Within," but I would sacrifice it to get the others. I just saw APTB and "Circumstances" both on the last tour (the latter on only the first leg, granted), so I would be happy with either.
-
Yea, "Show Don't Tell" is one of my least favorite Rush songs. :lol
-
I don't dislike it, but on the list of Rush songs I want to see brought back, that is very low on the list. Hell, if they are gonna play something from Presto, give us the title track (which has been rumored the last few tours) or "The Pass" again. Nothing else from that probably has a chance in hell, so I won't even mention "Available Light."
-
If they don't play anything from Presto or Vapor Trails I'd consider it a good thing. I really don't care for either of those albums.
-
Holy fucking shit those sets would be incredible.
-
I hope my up close shows are B sets if that holds true, as I prefer the B in all but 1 case, and 2 of the A songs are 2 of like 5 or 6 Rush songs I actively dislike.
-
If "One Little Victory" bites the dust, I will consider this tour's set list one massive victory.
But I still don't like them putting fairly new songs in the encores, like they did with OLV last tour. Put "Far Cry" in that 6th slot in the first set, and move those two rotating 70s classics to the first encore slot.
-
Oh, and we cannot overlook how incredible it would be for to bring back the segue from "The Trees" into "Xanadu," like they did on the MP tour. *drools*
-
I'm not sure if they've done any of these medleys in that list before seeing as I've never seen Rush live before my show this July, but that "Fly By Night/In The Mood" medley would be really, really awesome to see.
-
I cannot remember exactly which tour, but I think they did the "Fly by Night"/"In the Mood" mash-up sometime back in the 70s. In fact, I don't think "Fly by Night" has been played since the 70s. That would be a tough one for an aging Geddy to tackle vocally.
-
FUCK I wish I was going to this!
-
You've got to be kidding me...
This is one thing Rush does that kinda ticks me, instead of choosing A/B nights by geography they just rotate night to night. I'm set to see three shows, and if they rotate songs it won't matter at all because I'll end up seeing the same set at each show.
-
Dreamline is not on that list. THANK GOD.
-

That is a pretty weak way of looking at it. Like they are supposed to know which exact shows some fans who are going to more than one show are going to. :tdwn :tdwn
Dreamline is not on that list. THANK GOD.
I love "Dreamline." It has been played on every tour since its release, so I can understand some wanting to see it put it to rest, at least for maybe a tour, but I would have no problem if it continued to get played on every tour. It is that good, especially live.
-
I'd love to see Middletown Dreams again. It's been 25 since I saw them play that live. I would love to hear them do an acoustic version of Presto out of the drum solo.
-
I want A Passage To Bangkok but also want Subdivisions :(
-
Holy crap. I'd be more than happy with that set. Only problem is, my ideal set would have APTB, Subdivisions, The Enemy Within, Cold Fire, and Marathon. So I guess I want more B songs than A songs. Of course, these are all rumors, but DAMN that's a great set....

It's not what shows certain fans are going to, it's simply geography. If you play three shows within 60 miles of one another then you shouldn't be playing the same set at each show. All it would take is to take a map of the tour before hand and pick which cities get set A and B instead of changing it every other night.

It's not a bad song. Just sick of hearing it live.
-
Yeah, as much as I *love* Dreamline, it's time it gets dropped for something I haven't heard yet.

Also, when you say 2112 in the setlist, do you mean the full song or just the first two parts?
-
I'd love to see Middletown Dreams again. It's been 25 since I saw them play that live.
I have really grown to love "Middletown Dreams" over the years (I liked it at first, but was never that bonkers over it until the last few years), but if it comes down to that or "Marathon," I am taking "Marathon" all the way. Shoot, they should just cut "The Big Money" loose and play both at every show! :)

Well, remember this is all just speculation at this point. We have no idea if that set list is even close to accurate, so time will tell. ;)

I am not. I have only see them 9 times, and I cannot imagine a great song getting old after listening to it 9 times on my CD player, so the same applies to the live setting.

I would assume the first two parts only (and maybe the last part).
-
Very good setlist---however I can't imagine they won't play one song from Vapor Trails. That record holds a special place for the guys as Neil's "comeback" album.
Hmmm, Freeze would be nice to hear.
-
I really hope that my show is on a "B" night then, since I'd much rather hear Subdivisions than Show, Don't Tell
-
Holy shit The Enemy Within.
-
1. 2112
3. The Analog Kid
6. A.Passage to Bangkok
8. Subdivisions
6. A.The Enemy Within/ B. The Body Electric
8. A.Middletown Dreams/B. Marathon
2. Jacobs Ladder
These would be awesome. :metal
-
man, i hope the $90 lower bowl seats go on sale finally. I really don't want to miss this tour. If that set is about right on then this set kicks the last time's ass
-

Honestly, I think if anything else was gonna be played from VT, aside from the five that have been played, it would have been played by now. The band has even said that some of the songs are unplayable live (because of how layered they ended up being in the studio), so if anything else is gonna be played from it, it is most likely gonna be one of the five they have already played. "Earthshine" would be my pick, and, as I have said before, I am praying they put "One Little Victory" to sleep for good. That being the first encore was the only stain on an otherwise stellar set list on the S&A tour.

I'd loo see the double neck come out for the title song.

As much as I'm pumped for Jacob's Ladder to be played, I don't like its place in the encore. It's too dragging of a song to put at such a critical point of the show as the encore. I know people will remember it because of its significance, but why not put it in the middle of one of the sets, so the encore doesnt get the energy drained out of it?

It would do well as the last song of the encore, IMO.

I disagree, a slow paced song like JL shouldn't even be near the encore. It should be in the middle of the set. But I can't really complain, we're lucky enough to even be getting it at all.
-
I think a slow-paced song can be a great closer -- depends on the song, I guess.

Jacob's Ladder isn't just slow, its plodding. Something like that would kill the end of the show. As opposed to having say, Resist in the encore, which is still a slow-ish song, but its mood befits the encore slot better.

Maybe I'm just a little weird, then. I've always thought SDV would be a great encore at a DT show too.

I'd certainly agree with that, SDV would be a most excellent ending to ANY show. Something about Jacob's Ladder just doesn't scream encore to me.

I am surprised no one commented on the fact that Moving Pictures is broken up by the intermission. The whole point of of playing an album in its entirety is to hear it straight through without any interruptions (maybe a moment where a song is introduced)...
And I would hope to get the "A" setlist if it is a straight A/B rotation...
-
You forget that when a lot of people first heard Moving Pictures it was with an intermission. It's called Side A and Side B, and I'd be happy if they did it that way.
-

I disagree. I think finishing Set 1 with Side 1 and then starting Set 2 with Side 2 is the way for Rush to go with this.
Also, did anyone else see the CBC interview Geddy and Alex did last week? When asked a question about what songs he likes playing live that Alex doesn't, Geddy mentioned one they had been rehearsing for this summer, but Alex laughingly corrected him and said it is Neil who doesn't like playing it. The song is "Stick It Out." So, we now know that it is at least being strongly considered, so it stands a good chance of being played.
-

These kids are lucky they didn't have 8-tracks like I did for some albums like Hemispheres where the song itself clicks to a different track. Oh the memories.
-
Yeah, I remember that interview Kev. Problem is, Neil isn't big on playing it, and they've said that everyone needs to be happy in a 3-piece band, so I wouldn't count on seeing "Stick it Out." Its a good song, but hopefully they'll replace it with something else from CP, like "Leave That Thing Alone," "Animate," "Cold Fire," "Cut to the Chase," "Nobody's Hero," or "Everyday Glory."
-
True, they all need to be happy, but I remember from years ago that they agreed that all three get I think two songs per tour that they can pick that the other cannot reject, so assuming they still do that, that could be one of Geddy's "cannot reject" songs, so to speak. Not that any of them are gonna force the others to play a song that they dislike, but they all still get along so well, my guess is none of them mind making concessions and playing a song or two they may not like that much, if one of the others really likes it and wants to play it.
I find the rumored set list I originally posted interesting in the respect of the CP songs, as "Stick It Out" is a song that Peart apparently doesn't like, but he loves "Cold Fire" a lot more than the others apparently do, so those two rotating would make sense. Given the seven MP songs, the songs they have to play, the new songs, and some of the other mainstays, they might not be able to afford all three getting their two "cannot reject" songs per night, so rotating them might be something they might do.
-
Do you have a link to where they revealed that? I think it would be a cool read.
-
I do not. I remember them talking about it during a radio interview back in the 90s (I think before TfE was released), back when they did those Rockline interviews before every album release. I cannot imagine why they would have stopped doing that, but I cannot remember the last time they actually mentioned it.
-

That retort made me :lol ... Seriously, do you really consider the point of flipping a piece of wax an intermission?
In any event, I would have to disagree and I would think it is stupid to split the album with the intermission...
-
I dont really think the intermission is going to bother me.
People who are paying attention are going to know the second half is coming after the break, its not like people are going to flip out thinking like "WHAT! HOW DARE THEY TAKE A BREAK NOW!"
Well, maybe a few people will, but the split in the middle of Moving Pictures would not bother me.
-

The Camera Eye is a fantastic way to start the second set. It has a great build up and I cant wait to see the video intermision leading to the song. Where's that Camera!!!
-
Anyone going to Jiffy Lube Live on 9/18?

7. A.Stick It Out/B. Cold Fire
8. A.Middletown Dreams/B. Marathon
9. Malignant Narcissism
10. Drum Solo
11. Hope/Broon's Bane
12. The Trees
13. Xanadu
14. Prelude: Hemispheres
15. The Spirit of Radio
Encore
1. Far Cry
2. Jacobs Ladder
3. Fly By Night/In The Mood
Looking it over, that looks like a set list I could see them doing.
Yes, it seems almost plausible but I think they will only have two...maybe three slots where they will alternate. (They still might still be arguing about the others).
Looks like they're going with the Xanadu/Prelude medley from the Counterparts tour. I LOVE that version of Xanadu. It feels like the venue is going to liftoff (indoors...I haven't heard this version outdoors).
Interestingly The Moving Pictures Tour began with Overture and The Temples of Syrinx and included Prelude.
I have to say that Fly By Night/In The Mood is a major surprise. Maybe it will work since it's been 20 years since they played In The Mood and 30 years since the Fly By Night/In The Mood medley was road-tested. I can't say I'm all that excited to see it.
I'd LOVE to hear anything in the 6 to 8 slot in the second set except for Stick It Out and I never get tired of Subdivisions it seems. Witch Hunt and Vital Signs will be cool as well. I can't wait to see those film shorts too. I REALLY hope that sick jam stays at the end of Closer To The Heart from the Test For Echo Tour
I'm not entirely convinced this is the set, but it's plausible that could be a rough draft that will be cut. Maybe they left room for extras if they get bored playing something, they can plug one of those extras in.
I guess I'm glad I stuck with two shows.
-
If "Xanadu" comes back, I hope they play the first two minutes, instead of basically bypassing it like they did on the R30 tour.
While I would get the significance of playing "2112" first, like on the MP tour, this being a tour of outdoor shows, that is a "dark" song, and playing it when it is still light outside just wouldn't seem right.
Looking over that set list again, it is too long. No way are they doing 31 songs a night. They did 27 on the last tour, and I don't see them suddenly making their shows that much longer again.
-
In that case Kev I think this is what should be cut...
1. 2112
2. Freewill
3. The Analog Kid
4. Big Money
5. Time Stand Still
6. A.Passage to Bangkok/B.Circumstances
7. Workin’ Them Angels
8. A.Show Don’t Tell/B. Subdivisions
9. Closer To The Heart
10. Tom Sawyer
11. Red Barchetta
12. YYZ
13. Limelight
Intermission
1. The Camera Eye
2. Witch Hunt
3. Vital Signs
4. Caravan
5. BU2B
6. A.The Enemy Within/ B. The Body Electric
7. A.Stick It Out/B. Cold Fire
8. A.Middletown Dreams/B. Marathon
9. Malignant Narcissism
10. Drum Solo
11. Hope/Broon's Bane
12. The Trees
13. Xanadu
14. Prelude: Hemispheres
15. The Spirit of Radio
Encore
1. Far Cry
2. Jacobs Ladder
3. Fly By Night/In The Mood
-
Yeah, that setlist needs to come to the UK
-
I strongly disagree with any set list change that takes "Freewill" out of it. That should be a "no questions asked, every tour song," and like I have said for years, I would love to seem them one day play it as their final encore. I think it would be a great way to close a show.
-

Kev, as great as a song it is. I've seen it too many times and wuld like to see something different. IMO.
-
Agreed with Kev, Freewill is one of Rush's best songs. It need to be on rotation this tour.
-
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but honestly, I think peeps can sometimes can get caught up in wanting to hear and see something different, just for the sake of something different, at the expense of reliable classics. If I had a penny for every time I read someone online say they wish they would never see "Tom Sawyer" again live, I wouldn't have to work ever again, but I cannot imagine a Rush concert without hearing that song. Crowds always go nuts for stuff like "Tom Sawyer" and "Freewill," and they are great songs (in the studio AND live), so they can keep playing them forever and this fan will never have a problem with it. :)
-
I think Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio are the only two songs that HAVE to be played. They get the biggest reaction by far of any songs.

This. Some songs just can't be taken out, "Freewill" is one of them.
-
Kev, when you've seen a band 26 times, you'd like them to drop a song you've seen them play every time but one tour. Freewill is that song.
-
Anyone going to Jiffy Lube Live on 9/18?
I'm probably going to that show, or the one in Pittsburgh 9/16. D.C. is about 4 hours away, Pittsburgh is 5 hours, and those are the two closest shows to me. Depends if I can find someone to go see Rush with me.
-

Along with "2112," I would agree, but the ending of the guitar solo (or band solo, as that might be more accurate) in "Freewill" always gets a huge applause. Go listen to any live version and listen to the huge cheer as soon as Lerxst transitions from the solo back into the main melody.

Actually, since I started seeing Rush (on the RtB tour), it was gotten the every other tour treatment:
RtB tour: played
CP tour: not played
TfE tour: played
VT tour: played only sporadically
R30 tour: not played
S&A tour: played
So, out of the 9 times I have seen them, I have only gotten "Freewill" 6 times. ;)
-
Re: the debate over whether or not "Freewill" will be or should be played --
I really don't think we have a... choice :neverusethis:
-
They better play "Freewill". They have no choice here!
-
Really like the idea of a lot of those songs in the "rumoured" setlist. It'll be great to see RUSH do Passapge to Bangkok, Jacob's Ladder and The Camera Eye... since I've seen DT do all of those. Would also love to see Cold Fire ... my favorite from CP - miles better than Stick it Out.
Not sure why the four album stretch of Presto/RtB/CP/T4E doesn't get much love. Just re-listened to them all recently, and they are as good as the 80s albums.
-
CP is. Those other 3, not so much.
-
Presto and Test for Echo are both somewhat weak overall, although both have a couple of standout songs. Plus, neither sounds that great - Presto is too thin and bottomless from a low end standpoint, and Test for Echo sounds too cluttery and jumbled, as opposed to the terrific sound of CP.
Roll the Bones has a few weaker songs ("Face Up" and "You Bet Your Life") but the five songs they have played from it live are all at least very good, and "Heresy" is a nice and widely overlooked good songs, and I like "The Big Wheel" quite a bit, as well. "Neurotica" needed a much stronger chorus, but I like the vibe going on in the verses. From start to finish, RtB is a very nice listen.
But, yeah, CP is the obvious standpoint of that four-album stretch.
-
I think I like CP the least of those 4...
-
I think I like CP the least of those 4...
Interesting. Any reasons specifically?
-
From those four Roll the Bones is my favorite, followed closely by Counterparts. The main reason I love Roll the Bones more than most Rush fans is that I genuinely like all the songs on the album, even those considered filler by many.

You sure do have a lot of bravado to come in here and say that :lol
-
I think I like CP the least of those 4...
Interesting. Any reasons specifically?
Well, Presto is maybe lower than CP, having just listened to CP again.
I think Roll the Bones has stronger songs overall. The singles from RTB are waaayyy better then those from CP (with the exception of Nobodys Hero). Test for Echo is really underrated and has some terrific songs on it.
Overall, CP doesnt have that many interesting songs on it.
The Great Stuff
Nobody's Hero
Alien Shore
Between Sun and Moon
Leave that Thing Alone
The OK Stuff
Animate
Stick it Out
Cut to the Chase
Cold Fire
The Not Good Stuff
The Speed of Love
Everyday Glory
Garbage
Double Agent
Whereas, I consider Presto, Roll the Bones, and Test for Echo to have far more enjoyable songs on it.
There are a lot of reasons, really.
-
I guess I'm a little biased on those four albums, as I *truly* started getting into Rush with the release of Chronicles in '90... which was followed by picking up the subsequent albums as they came out (and Presto was still on the front of the shelves). Yes, they have their weak moments, and I guess my acoustic pallet is not discerning enough to pick apart the flaws of the sound quality.
-
Is there any word of this being brought to the UK? I will cry if they decide not to
-
Those four albums have some really good songs in there, especially Presto, which is my favorite from that particular period. My favorites from the era:
The Pass
Scars
Hand over fist
Available light
Dreamline
Roll the bones
Nobody's hero
Leave that thing alone
Between sun and moon
Driven
Virtuality
Time and motion
-
Yeah Time and Motion automatically makes Test for Echo better than Counterparts.

Time and Motion is good, but not that good.
IMO, the ranking of those four would be:
Counterparts>Roll the Bones>Presto=Test for Echo
But all of them still slay Vapour Trails.

Yes they do.
And Time and Motion is great. Best track on Test for Echo, and among my favourites from the 90s. That track convinced me to give Test for Echo another spin, and I soon realized how good the album is.
-
I'd rather hear Freewill live more than Tom Sawyer every day of the week ond twice on Sunday, but how much longer can Geddy sing "Each of us.... a cELL of awareness...?"
I love the first four Atlantic albums. I don't care if the band doesn't like Presto, I love it (Although it probably means we'll never hear Available Light played live).
-
I wish that wasn't the case...Available Light really deserves a live treatment.
-
I'm surprised Geddy could still sing so high like that on the album. If we get a song from Presto, it will probably be "The Pass," which is fine by me.
-
I just got my Entertainment Weekly and they have a review of the Rush Documentary. I know it shouldn't bother me but for years, even when Rush got good reviews,(like this movie) they seem to always throw in a few jabs at them. It makes my blood boil when I read songthing like this.

It would be hard to think of a rock & roll band with more chops, and fewer hooks, than Rush. Formed in 1968, this legendary Toronto trio invented its own thick, spiky brew of early-metal prog showmanship (think Led Zeppelin without...you know, tunes).
All that in the first paragraph, what a champ.
At least reading some of the comments made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
-
At least reading some of the comments made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
-
Pretty much what a lot of people said in the comments is very legitimate criticism: He spent a couple of sentences on the actual movie and the rest of it dissing Rush's music. As one of the posters said: "How fitting that you're calling the band shit in a review of a movie about how they've endured for forty years with the mainstream against them." Of course when (or if) he reads those comments, he's just going to chalk it up to crazed Rush fans, which may be the case, but doesn't make the above criticism any less valid.
-
Blah, blah, blah. Rush is critics' biggest defeat ever. They have collectively been trashing Rush for literally DECADES...and it hasn't made a bit of difference. Rush has been very popular for most of their career (No, not U2 or Zeppelin popular, but still very popular), their music has stood the test of time, and they continue to put a lot of butts in the seats. You know that drives critics crazy, and they continue to flail away at the band, as if anyone actually gives a crap what they think.
-
Ironically, I'm listening to Hemispheres as I read this thread, and Circumstances comes on. All I can say is ...
Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose
-
So, what stuff are we gonna see on stage this tour?
They've already done washer/dryers, candy machines, and rotisserie chicken grillers.
What next?

It's been very strange the last six months while the band's profile has been raised. I'm not used to having all of this candy easily accessible and in large quantities. Really does a number on the music budget.

Heh, between being in the "I Love You Man" movie and all of the coverage they have gotten in recent years, it is very different from when I got into them in the 90s, when they were still really popular with fans, but were generally ignored by the mainstream press.

I think that as the press looks around now, there are only a handful of cross generational bands that are still really drawing, and Rush is one of them. With so much competition in the press, they certainly seem more willing to hitch their wagons to a band like Rush.
This is why the RnR HOF will happen.

Not that I am saying TAC or anyone else here is doing this, but I wish the collective Rush fan base would stop obsessing over and talking about the stupid R&RHOF. Who gives a crap if Rush never makes it? They don't need that validation or "honor."
-
Right Kev, I wasn't saying it, but I mentioned them as an extension/example of the media that for competitive reasons has no choice to no longer ignore Rush.

Kev, I think every Rush fan just wants Jann to eat crow. It won't make a difference to me.
-
Yeah, by now theres really nothing left to discuss. Everything on the subject has been said.
I'm pretty sure most of us don't care...
-
Since the show starts tomorrow here. i'll try and post the setlist after remembering what i could.
-
rushisaband.com is reporting that this was the set list in rehearsals yesterday:
Set 1
1. The Spirit of Radio
2. Time Stand Still (last played on Counterparts tour)
3. Presto (never played live)
4. Stick It Out (last played on Test For Echo tour)
5. Leave That Thing Alone (last played on Vapor Trails tour)
6. Workin' Them Angels
7. Faithless (never played live)
8. BU2B (new song - never played live)
9. Freewill
10. Marathon (last played on Presto tour)
11. Subdivisions
Intermission
Set 2
12. Tom Sawyer
13. Red Barchetta
14. YYZ
15. Limelight
16. The Camera Eye (last played on Signals tour)
17. Witch Hunt
18. Vital Signs (last played on Vapor Trails tour)
19. Caravan (new song - never played live)
20. Drum Solo
21. Alex Solo (Hope?)
22. Closer to the Heart (last played on Vapor Trails tour)
23. 2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx
24. Far Cry
Encore
25. La villa Strangiato (last played on R30 tour)
26. Working Man (last played on R30 tour)
------
I am hoping that is not accurate.
"Presto" the 3rd song of the first set? Talk about losing a crowd early, as that is a song only a small percent of every crowd will give a crap about hearing. In fact, most of the crowd will be asleep for a majority of that first set.
"Far Cry" closing the second set? That would be a huge mistake. They have to know by now that closing a set with a new(er) song or putting it in the encore is a colossal mistake. Classics everybody knows and wants to hear is what you end sets with and play as encores.
And no "Jacob's Ladder." If they don't play that, after Lifeson said in an interview that they would be playing it, I will be EXTREMELY disappointed in the band. I am sorry, but you don't say in an interview that you are going to play a diehard fan favorite that you haven't played in almost 30 years and then don't play it. You just don't. I pray this rumored set list is not accurate.
-
Wow, that'd be a real disappointment compared to the earlier rumored setlist. At the same time, Rush hasn't done a setlist that really floored me in quite some time.
Listening to MP the other night, it occurred to me that Camera Eye would be a fantastic way to return in the second set. I thought that was a great idea when I saw the earlier setlist.
-
I love the setlist, I get Time Stand Still which was the #1 song I wanted.
No Jacob's Ladder, Entre Nous, or anything off of Test For Echo? >:(
-
I'd be happy with any of those sets, personally. The only lame song is Presto.
-
For some reason, I'm not sure if this is 100% true. There were casting calls for the pre-song videos and one of the scripts mentioned Lakeside Park.
-

Some of these choices look interesting. I'm happy they are playing "Faithless" (although "Hope" should really precede it), "Marathon", "Stick It Out" and "Leave That Thing Alone" (which would've been awesome before the drum solo, even though they did that 3 tours in a row)... "Presto" live should be interesting.
If "Jacob's Ladder" is being playing on an A/B rotational setlist, I would be VERY upset, especially if they record a night without it. Then again, which song would it replace? "Presto", or perhaps "Marathon"? Hopefully none of the CP tunes... I also don't like "Subdivisions" ending the first set, nor "Far Cry" ending the 2nd set.
As for the encore, I like it, but only if Lerxst finally pulls out an acoustic for the intro, which would be a REAL treat... also - full version of LVS this time around guys, pleeeeeease... I really hope "Working Man" is also a full version... that would make a 17-18 minute encore, that is, if there aren't any Lerxst rants this time around.
For being a "Time Machine Tour", they really missed the boat on dropping "Jacob's Ladder", and some other missed classics from their 80's albums (most of Power Windows and half of Hold Your Fire). No songs from GUP, RTB, TFE, or VT (a REALLY missed opportunity here)... kind of sad since there are a LOT of good, rarely played/unplayed songs from those albums...
-Marc.
-
For some reason, I'm not sure if this is 100% true. There were casting calls for the pre-song videos and one of the scripts mentioned Lakeside Park.
Fail. I've been waiting for this song a long, long time live. But I do agree with Kev on the placement. I guess we will find out tomorrow night.
-
You know, as pleased as I am that Moving Pictures is getting played in full, looking at it now...I liked the set better when it was split through the encore. I dunno, something about it made more sense.
I'm also not crazy about this setlist. I don't really care that much about seeing Jacob's Ladder. I know its pretty groundbreaking to have it played live, but I'm not a fan of the song. Faithless and Presto are neat to see, but otherwise, the set looks sort of wrong...Subdivisions and Far Cry as the two set closers doesn't sit well with me. Plus the pacing of the first set is totally out of wack...
-
I see nothing wrong with the choice of songs, just the way in which they are arranged, and if Alex said they're bringing out Jacob's Ladder and rearranging it slightly, then I believe him. This is probably just a rumor, no way would they follow TSOR with Time Stand Still.
-
You know, after browsing on the Rush forums for a bit, trying to sneak a peek at any new spoilers, I was reading the comments made on the rumored setlist and it reminded me of one important detail...
THIS IS GOING TO BE MY FIRST RUSH SHOW
I don't give half a shit what they play, thats all going to take a backseat to the experience itself.
So, I'm good no matter what they play.
-
I see nothing wrong with the choice of songs, just the way in which they are arranged
Agreed. On paper, if you listed all of those songs in chronological order, I would be happy with most of them, but the pacing of that first set just looks dreadful...on paper. Of course, it could work like magic in person, but on paper, it just looks like a first set that will put most fans to sleep. Seeing "Presto" for the first time will be neat, as that is a good song, and it will likely have more oomph that the studio original, but putting it in the 3rd spot will kill momentum quickly at most shows (since most will have no clue what it is, except for the biggest diehards).
Having said that, if "Marathon" is coming back, I will be very happy about that, and I will never get tired of "La Villa Strangiato." I also would love to see "Leave That Thing Alone" come back, as that song rules in every way possible.
But if they really don't play "Jacob's Ladder" after Alex said they were going to...gah, what a massive disappointment that will be. I guess we should have learned out lesson when he promised a major revamping of the set list for the second leg of the S&A tour in '08, and it got only a few minor changes (most of which were bringing back songs that get played all of the time anyway, except for "Ghost of a Chance").

What song is it on now? Honestly its still Rush, so I won't mind the setlist, but I do think it'll be really bad if they don't pull out Jacob's Ladder like they said they would.
EDIT: I'm not a huge fan of JL, and La Villa Strangiato more than makes up for it.

Hearing new song >>> hearing Jacob's Ladder live. Wonder whats with the whole "using numbers instead of words" thing thats going on with this new album...probably something to do with that clock theme, but that doesn't explain "Caravan." Still excited BECAUSE ITS FUCKING RUSH
-
"Love 4 Sale" is most likely the name of Peart's new drum solo. He always gives his drum solos names.
For now, I will just say that I am happy I looked at the set list. Had I gone in blind, but expecting "Jacob's Ladder," I would have pissed at the end of the show after they didn't play. At least now, I will have two months to get over it before my show. :lol
-
Ah, good point, Kev. Makes sense. I guess I'm used to either "the Rhythm Method" or "the drummer" in another language. I put the setlist into iTunes and I'm going to listen tomorrow, see how that goes.
I kinda wish "Animate" would see the light of day, especially after Neil called it one of their best songs in the documentary.
-

Being the "Time Machine" tour, how neat would it be if Neil put his solo in the middle of "Working Man" during the encore, and "Love 4 Sale" is what, as the setlist predictor's noted, would be an Alex solo-type song, or at least an Alex-centric song?
Guess we'll find out soon enough...
-Marc.
-
I love "Animate," too, but I don't like the way they slow it down live. It sounded too slow on the R30 tour, and they shortened two of the choruses. Some songs simply don't work quite as well live, and that just might be one of them.
This set list might very well work like crazy when I see it, but the first half of that first set is gonna be a snoozer for a lot of people, I'm telling ya. Ultimately, though, diehard fans have been clamoring for "The Camera Eye," "Presto" and "Marathon" for years, and all three are getting played this year, so there is that. I just think they could have done so much more with the set list, given that they are not touring on a new album and don't have too many spots taken up by brand new songs.
And I will that saying ending the second set with "Far Cry" is one of the three biggest WTFs Rush have done live since I became a fan, the other two being, putting "One Little Victory" in the encore on the S&A tour, and seguing from "Xanadu" into "Superconductor" on the Rtb tour. I think some old school Rush fans are still in mental hospitals as a result of that. :lol :lol
-
Well, the drum solo has followed "Caravan", but I'm still holding out to see if "Love 4 Sale" is the drum solo, or a song after it.... if the next song is CTTH, then we'll know!
-Marc.
-
FUUUUUCK.
I wanted to wait, but I couldn't do it.
Out of the set here is what I haven't seen in full yet-
TIME STAND STILL
PRESTO
STICK IT OUT
LEAVE THAT THING ALONE
FAITHLESS
BU2B
MARATHON
CAMERA EYE
VITAL SIGNS
CARAVAN
LOVE 4 SALE
CLOSER TO THE HEART
LA VILLA STRANGIATO
WORKING MAN
So in general I'm pretty happy with what got thrown in for the tour. Faithless is probably the biggest surprise, since once they didn't rotate in any new Snakes songs for the 2nd leg of that tour I pretty much figured the songs we saw live that tour would be the only ones we ended up seeing.
I'm kinda indifferent on Presto, and I can't stand Stick It Out, but otherwise I'm thrilled with some of those choices, especially Marathon, Leave That Thing Alone, Closer to the Heart, and Time Stand Still.
-
Looks like "Love 4 Sale" is Neil's solo this tour around...
Also, is anyone holding out for ANY setlist changes on A/B nights? This show seems fairly short, only being about 140 minutes long in terms of song length...maybe 150, but 160 tops. I think they may have rehearsed more and might do an alternate switching sort of thing... I hope.
-Marc.
-
Maybe. We'll just have to see tomorrow, I guess? I love how I haven't seen a majority of these songs live (albeit after only one other show) and I'm kinda happy "Dreamline" is gone. I like the song, but its apparently been played every tour until now.
-
Yeah, love Dreamline, but definitely time for a rest.
-
I doubt we'll see any songs rotated. The rush.com page says that that is the Time Machine set list, so I would assume it is set in stone for every show.
I love "Dreamline" and would have no problem with them playing that on every tour till they are finished; it is that good of a live song.
Honestly, I am anxious to hear how good "Presto" sounds live. I still don't think it is in a good spot, but oh well.
Finally getting to see "Marathon" takes some of the sting of a certain other song not getting played. That three song run at the end of the first set will slay.
-
This is like the best set ever, listening to it now. Not a bad song yet. (I mistook "Presto" for "Chain Lightning" yesterday)
-
Yeah, I'm okay with the set.
I couldn't care less about them not playing Jacob's Ladder; I never found it that good of a song, and it would be downright boring live.
Stoked for Presto and Faithless and pretty much everything on that set.
Also, Far Cry at the end is still pretty weird, but its become a pretty well-known song and a fan-favourite off of S&A, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and hope that it works as a closer.
-
Studio albums not represented on this tour:
Fly by Night
Caress of Steel (shocking! :lol)
Grace Under Pressure
Roll the Bones (first time since its release that it is not represented at all)
Test for Echo
Vapor Trails
-
A bit of a missed opportunity with T4E and Vapor Trails...they're new enough that not many of the songs are overplayed, but there are still plenty of obscure songs they could pull out.
Otherwise, it seems pretty reasonable. As said before, Roll the Bones gets plenty of live treatment, and so does P/G. FBN and CoS are no surprise, really.
-
They can continue to ignore TfE forever and I will be just fine with that. Given the short shelf life that album has had in the live sets says it all. Since the TfE tour, here is how many songs from it have been played:
VT tour: 2 ("Driven" and an acoustic "Resist")
R30 tour: 1 (acoustic "Resist)
S&A tour: 0 (both legs)
Time Machine tour: 0
I don't think any other Rush album has seen such a short collective shelf life in the live sets. Hell, even Presto at least got three songs on the next album's tour. In fact, Test for Echo is the ONLY Rush album to see only two songs get played on future tours (meaning tours not representing the album itself).
-
Yeah, that sort of bums me out. Frankly, I find Test for Echo has far more songs that are suited for a live environment than Presto does.
On an unrelated note, I keep forgetting how much space Moving Pictures takes up. Granted, they often play most of the songs from that album on every tour, but seeing it all together makes it look very filling.
-
I haven't been dying to see "The Camera Eye" live like a lot of other Rush fans have been, but it will be cool to see it finally. The other six songs from MP are all great enough to where they always kick ass live, although "Limelight" seemed a bit stagnant on the last tour; Peart looked like he was playing it in slow motion or something.
It continues to amaze me that they never play "The Pass" live. All three have talked about how much they love it, yet, since the RtB tour, it has only been played on one tour. That is just strange.
Back to TfE, the only songs I would want to see live now would be "Resist" or the never played before "Totem." Everything else, nah. I like some of the other songs, but they have too many other good songs to waste five minutes on a TfE song, IMO. I am sure someone will say, "Yeah, but they are wasting five minutes playing Stick It Out this year," but playing anything from CP is never a bad thing. :coolio
-
"Stick It Out" is awesome. I don't care what any of you say.
-
I was convinced that this was the year "The Analog Kid" was finally coming back, but I was dead wrong. Interestingly, looking over the Rush set lists from every tour, it is rather surprising how little it has been played over the years. It was obviously played on the Signals tour, but since:
P/G tour: Nope (although it was played at all five shows on the P/G warm-up tour)
PoW tour: Nope
HYF tour: Nope
Presto tour: Nope
RtB tour: Only played the last month of an eight month tour
CP tour: Played every night of the tour
TfE tour: Nope
VT tour: Nope
R30 tour: Nope
S&A tour: Nope
Time Machine tour: Nope (barring any unforeseen changes)
So, in other words, since the Signals tour, "The Analog Kid" has only been regularly been played on one single tour. That absolutely shocks me.
-
Well. I just got back from this amazing show. It was the best of the year for me. The rehearsals setlist that was posted is the correct set. It was Fuckin the best you will not be disappointed especially by the rearrangments. Working Man was the cool especially how they began it. Those going will enjoy completely those who aren't. Well sucks for you

Good to hear you enjoyed the show! :) Despite my initial disappointment about not getting JL, I am sure I will enjoy the hell out of the show I see in less than two months. :coolio

How was the drum solo?
How do they rearrange The Camera Eye?

In that radio interview someone just posted they talked about taking out a few repeated sections. Not sure what else they'll do.
-
The drum solo was pretty cool and different. He dropped a stick but it still kicked ass. And Closer To The Heart was a surprise.
-
Aside for Stick It Out (worst song in the set by far), I'm more than OK with it.
Sure I'm bummed about not hearing Jacob's Ladder, but it's a lot easier to take if we get Presto and Faithless.
Here's the opening video for the set (Pure Genius!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUZa1iJ7jDM
I wasn't all that pysched to see The Camera Eye either (figuring that that ship has sailed), but after seeing the clip I really like the work they put into it and I'm kinda psyched to see it now.
Quite a few people on various Rush messageboards seem to be more than a little ticked off at the set this time, but I'm not one of those people.
I know Leave That Thing Alone hasn't been gone from the set long, but I want to BE that song.
Before Snakes and Arrows came out, it was probably my favorite Rush instrumental. It still might be.
I'll have to own up to the Hockey Night In Canada Theme not being included in the drum solo, maybe there were copyright issues or they figured (probably rightly) that it didn't go with the theme.

Portnoy was invited to the show last night as Neils guest and tweeted about it:
# I am truly humbled to have developed a friendship with one of my childhood heroes...
# A big thank you to Bubba for his generous hospitality & the royal treatment he gave to me and Marlene at Rush's show tonight in Kansas City
# Not only is Neil Peart an exceptional drummer and an inspirational human being, he is an incredibly gracious host!
# As I have 2 days off from the DT tour, I'm flying to Kansas City to catch Rush...(thx to the gracious Mr. Peart for the personal invite!)

I wonder if he enjoyed the set.

I have admittedly not been a fan of Portnoy's for a pretty long time, but I'll give him props for being patient and taking the time to let the fans who recognized him take pics with him. But the person who recorded that comes off like a freaking stalker. You go to see Rush and you spend your time recording a musician from another band you saw in the crowd? Lame. I guess it is not hard to see why Peart, who is a very shy person by his own admission, is very resistant to be out in public around fans. Some people simply handle that stuff better than others.

Okay, to do tick's idea in this thread, the 5 songs I am most pumped to see this tour are:
1. "Marathon" - Long one of my favorite Rush tunes, I will FINALLY get to see it.
2. "La Villa Strangiato" - I never get tired of them playing this.
3. "Caravan" - Will be curious to see how it sounds live.
4. "BU2B" - Ditto.
5. "Red Barchetta" - Another personal favorite I can never get enough of (that is not as overplayed as the other Side 1 MP songs).
And the 5 I could miss (although I won't) if I had to run to the men's room:
1. "Limelight" - It doesn't do that much for me live anymore, I have to admit.
2. "Working Man" - Have never been overly wild about this song.
3. "Far Cry" - I am still shocked at the great spot this song got in the set list, which is not deserved.
4. "Stick It Out" - I love CP, but this is my least favorite from it.
5. "Faithless" - There was absolutely no reason to start playing this.

Whatever Kev. I love when a regular member decides what threads are acceptable to start and which one aren't.(https://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/eyesre4.gif)
but more power to you for feeling you had to put your list in this thread instead of the separate one I made just for it.(https://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/eh.gif)
cause your Rush tour thread should be the only one...

I'm not sure why you are getting pissy about this, but I don't care about having the only Rush thread. It just makes more sense to keep all tour talk in the same thread. If you disagree, that is fine, but my comments have nothing to do with what I think it is acceptable or not. But this is not a Rush forum; this is a DT forum, and we already have two Rush threads near the top of page 1, one for general Rush talk and the other for tour talk, so I simply don't see the point in starting another Rush thread, especially when one of the two threads going in appropriate for what you want to discuss. And I would say that regardless of who started this tour thread. Heck, I got the idea to rank the songs from Devin Townsend's AE the other day, but I didn't start a new thread (which I would have if I was really someone who cared about being a thread starter); I put it in the existing Devin thread that everyone posts in already. That makes the most sense and keeps everything nice and tidy. If there is big news or something new thread worthy, that is a different thing, but this isn't, IMO. That is all. :)

Yes, KevShmev is totally obsessed with making sure his thread is the biggest and best on DTF. Eventually, the entire general music board will be reduced to this one thread. That is his master plan. Fight against it Tick! Fight for thread independence, even if those threads take up unnecessary space!
-
Having never seen Rush before these are the top 5 songs I am looking forward to:
1. Marathon - One of my favorite Rush tunes, and my favorite from Power Windows
2. Subdivisions - Another favorite, best from Signals
3. Freewill
4. BU2B - The two new songs are two of the best new songs I've heard this year, so I'm pumped to hear both.
5. Caravan
Five that, if I had to, I would miss:
1. Faithless
2. Stick It Out
3. ...
4.
5.
Ahh fuck it, I've never seen the band before I want to see all these songs!
-
There is no need for anyone to get pissy about anything here. If you want to post your list here, go ahead, if you want to post it in the other thread, go ahead. Rush certainly gets enough discussion here that you can have a separate thread about like Tick's.
-
Not sure why people are not excited for Faithless...
Chances are it wont be played after this tour. Im always excited for unusual songs...

Thank you Nick.
Kev has his opinion, and its his right to. Ninja exercised his right to be condescending, and I have the right to start a thread for something specific if I deem it necessary. Someone posting the link to this thread in mine is unnecessary, imo. If a mod or admin wants to say, hey tick, lets keep it all in one Rush thread, and decides to lock it, you wont hear a word from me. Otherwise, it's no one else's place to determine what should or shouldn't be, imo. :), I will now let the flow of this thread continue as intended :tick2:

For the record Tick, along with Kev, I was also talking to you in regards to this post-

The word is "sarcastic," not "condescending." :)
And I posted the link because lots of people post threads not realizing there are other threads dedicated to the subject. I felt it was appropriate to post the link there. Those kind of posts happen all the time, because threads like that get started all the time, just like how every DT thread dissolves into a Moorefest. If the mods don't feel like merging threads, a-okay!
Having explained my actions, I sure am excited to see Rush live. I am still baffled at the decision to bring "Faithless" out, as I would have preferred "Bravest Face" if anything, but its still a good song and this is a great tour to see them.
-
Honestly, if they wanted to play "Faithless," my feeling is they should have played it on the 2nd leg of the S&A tour. They could have swapped out "The Larger Bowl" or "Spindrift" for it and everything would have worked. But then again, I am sure most of us figured on three or four S&A songs this tour, and the inclusion of "Faithless" still only makes it three, but I am sure most of us also figured "Malignant Narcissism" was a gimme. Shows how much we know. :lol
Anyway, regardless the silly stuff between all of us earlier today, it's all good. :hat

For the record, condescending worked as well as sarcastic, but whatever. We will move away from that.
On to the topic of Rush and Faithless. Its not a bad song, but I am not sure it will translate well live. I just think it might be boring and forgettable. Time(machine)will tell, and I hope I'm wrong. I think the track that puzzles me most is the return of Working Them Angels. I just didn't expect it to be on this set list. Its is a good song, but it didn't blow me away live. All in all though I am thrilled with the set list, and especially with the inclusion of Presto!
This is going to be a great tour, and I think it will greatly please all fans from the diehard to the most casual.

It is all good. Why are they are playing Working Them Angels again?
-
I wouldn't have minded them dropping it, but I like "Workin' Them Angels" a lot, and thought it came across pretty well live on both legs in '07 and '08, so I can't fault them for that choice. I figured it would be one of the S&A songs that would survive this tour.
I think "Armor and Sword" is a much better song, but it loses something live, as there are too many guitar things going on for Alex to do them all live and to give the song the power and charm it needs.
-
I agree with Kev that WTA is indeed a great song! I'm sure it's really nice live too.
-

I saw it 3 times last tour and it was good. I just felt they played two many S&A songs as a whole last time out, and on the Time Machine tour, just Playing a couple would have been enough. Faithless had not been played, and Far Cry is a new classic, but whatever, I can live with WTA again.
-
I remember really liking all the new stuff when I saw them in '07 (back when I only owned Moving Pictures and 2112), and WTA is definitely a highlight from S&A. I'm pumped to see it again.

I have seen Rush 37 times dating back to my first show on Moving Pictures tour. I think sometimes I am over critical of the set lists because I have been so spoiled. If the last tour was my first and this one my second, I don't think I would make a complaint about anything.
It is a great set list that should please any level of Rush fan.

Don't say that over at the CP forum. Browsing there again recently, I am reminded of why I stopped going there in the first place. There are a lot of people who are doing nothing but bitching non-stop, and anyone who disagrees with them, it is a naive fan boy/girl. It is pretty embarrassing. *shakes head*

I hate the Counterparts board and refuse to even visit it. I find the members smug, arrogant, and down right rude. I have no interest in there point of view. I am however a member of The Rush Forum where I have over 19,000 posts. I love that board and have made many good friends there I have spent much time with in person. I know the admins personally and some of the mods, and have spent quality time with them.
No board is perfect because people post on them and people in general are quite flawed, myself included.

What could they possibly have to bitch about? Is getting Moving Pictures and new songs not enough? Do they want them to play stuff like Hemispheres and Xanadu again or something?

I don't think anything Rush would do would make them truly happy. They need to be little bitches.

Kev if I remember corectly, they were playing Faithless in sound checks on the second leg but ended up not adding it to their set.

I will enjoy the first minute and a half anyway. They also did this on the Moving Pictures and Vapor Trails tours.
If they did the whole song that way, I'd die, but Alex would never stand for it because he has to riff.
-
Yup that's why i like it like that just for the rockin end
-
I've never understood how people don't enjoy "Working Man," it's such an unbelievably rockin' tune, I honestly can't get enough of it.

It's a greaend to the encore. I think that some are tired of certain songs and that's why they say they don't weant to hear it again.

While it does rock, in retrospect, it's very contrasting to Rush's current sound.
It's great live, because it's old school rock n' roll, but I find the studio version to be a bit flat.
-
I enjoy "Working Man" for the most part; it just isn't a favorite of mine, even from the first album.

"Working Man" is an amazing song.

Well, this will be my first Rush concert ;D. Incredibly excited.
Just one small question: Is there Rush merchandise for sale at the shows? For some reason I´ve never been able to get a Rush t-shirt :( Also, are the prices somewhat high or are they moderate?
Thanks in advance.
-
Rush, like most bands, doesn't bring any merchandise on a major tour.
-
For some reason I´ve never been able to get a Rush t-shirt :(
I got one with my "Beyond The Lighted Stage" DVD for only $19.99 +tax at Best Buy :coolio
-Marc.
-
I have nearly a dozen by going to shows, buying in stores, and shopping at their merch site. :D
-
When your fat like you go to the online store to buy the shirts. I'm seeing them in Sept. but they don't carry 3X at the shows. So I ordered it at the rush Backstage Club.
-
Ok ok, that´s great to know (yeah, I´m somewhat of a concert noob, this will be my first concert ever also :eek)
Thanks ;D
-
The timing of this tour sucks. They are in Philly when I'm at orientation for Virginia Tech and they are in Northern Virginia after I move in to Tech! :censored

You can always "hope" a show gets rained out and postponed... but then if your wish comes true, you might have a few thousand Rush fans angry at you...

Susquehanna Bank Center is indoors and Jiffy Lube Live is a pavilion! AHHH

I am in the same boat. I'm only an hour from the Atlanta show, but, unfortunately, since it's on a Wednesday night, I won't be able to attend. I have not just one but two graduate classes this fall on Wednesday nights, and there is just no way I can miss them and expect to keep up, since I'll also be doing part-time student teaching while continuing to work at Target. Profs at the college are nuts about makeup work. If you miss a 2 hour class, you'll end up with a bunch of weird hoops to jump through that will take much longer than 2 hours to complete. So no Rush show for me:
:tdwn
-
Booo, we could have met up there! Unless I have a serious test on Thursday, I'm not missing that Rush show.
-

Man, that sucks! It would be cool to meet someone from DTF, but, as previously indicated, it ain't gonna happen. Are you going to drive down or sky dive?
-

Unfortunately, if you want a shirt it's going to be $35 minimum. (Long gone are the days where I would get a least one of each design that I liked, now I'm lucky if I get one shirt per show. Even the bootleg shirts are $25 now!).
Enjoy the show!
I can't even imagine how much a Rush show these days will deliver to the uninitiated.
As far as Working Man goes, I understand why they do it. It's relatively easy on Geddy when compared to some of the other songs on the first album. It's also the touchstone that led to their initial success.
-

Skydiving, duh. That would be like asking you if you would have gone to the show on a giant murderous squid or not.
-
:lol
DEATHSQUID is a huge Rush fan. He was pissed, though, that they're not playing "Jacob's Ladder." I think he vanquished a few extra sailors at work the day he heard the setlist.
-
If they were pirates then I'll sew an octopus into my uniform in his honor. Of course no one will know whether I did or not, but still.
-
I know he's slain his fair share of pirates through the years, so go ahead.

I heard about that the other day. The guy has been posting his case all over both major Rush forums. It sucks that the concert got canceled at the last minute, but it sounds like the guy is throwing a hissy fit. Like it or not, it does say on the back of the ticket: EVENT DATE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. There is talk that the concert will be rescheduled for September. If so, he is probably SOOL. It was his choice to travel across the country for a concert. Like I said, it sucks, but, well, stuff happens. :p

How amazing was it?
Well, it was the best show I've ever seen, so if that's any indication...
Pretty much every song was amazing. They hit the nail on the head with every song I was feeling less excited about (Stick it Out, Working Man, etc), and Moving Pictures was phenomenal.
Also, the opening and closing videos are pretty much the best things ever.
I think, personally, the weakest song was The Camera Eye. It was still great to see live, but I sensed a bit of an energy drop in the crowd.
Granted they got it right back at the beginning of Witch Hunt, so its all good.
But yeah, amazing.
-
4 days.

I have 7 days until my show (Jones Beach, Long Island)
So pumped! :metal

63 days :(

21 days. :-\
It's getting closer though.

Absolutely brilliant.
Wow.... speechless.
-
just got back home. really awesome show

So those that have already been to shows so far.. What are the shirts like for the tour? Any pics? Trying to decide which shirt to get.
EDIT: Looked at their site. I'll probably go with the steampunk one.

Since I'm a fat, I bought the same shirt online and I'll wear it when I see them in Sept.
I can't wait to get the tourbook. I've bought one since the GUP tour when I saw them for the first time. I love reading it the next day.
-
sticky on one of the edges
Are you sure it wasn't Geddy Lee's man juice?
At first I thought it was my man juice, but then I remember my penis had not been near the poster (yet).
And Kings, you're gonna LOVE this tour book. Won't spoil it for you, but I was grinning ear to ear when I was reading it during the intermission last night. :tup
Also, let me just say that La Villa was fucking EPIC! I was rocking out so hard. Had no idea they were gonna play that, but was so happy. Same with Marathon. Those two songs made the night for me... its like Natural Science and Between the Wheels from the SNA tour. :coolio
-
They do the white, house lights durring the end of Marathon, Z? I just love Alex playing over the chorus of voices.
-
Pretty sure they did. I normally don't pay attention to band's light/pyro shows, but I have to say I was really impressed with Rush's last night. :tup
And I have mixed feelings about the set. The uncommon songs really did kill the energy. Infact, I think maybe only 25% of the venue clapped for Faithless after they played it. It was the dullest reaction to a song I've ever heard from any concert. But I'm glad I got to see those songs, because it made ME happy, even if most of the audience didn't care these rarities were being pulled out. ;)
-
It makes me mad because I want to see Faithless. The other 9,000 morons go to see the "Greatest hits" while I'd like to hear the songs never played. That's what happens to older bands that see want to be relevant and play newer songs. It's a shame.
-
It really is. I think Faithless got even less fanfare because 1) it's unknown... so the people going for the greatest hits show have never heard of it. 2) it's new Rush, so the older fans that are closed off to anything made after Signals automatically write it off. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Faithless, but I'm grateful to hear any Rush song that I have not yet heard live. :tup
Trying to think if there was anything else I wanna say... the show was excellent. In terms of screws up, I caught a couple. One of the keyboard lines/solos for (I think) Marathon was muted, or atleast turned way down, so I couldn't hear it. The other was Neil actually came in LATE for once. :lol Forgot what song it was, but it was later in the show. It caused them to stumble a little bit, but this is Rush we are talking about, so obviously they recovered quite quickly and effortlessly. ;)
Caravan. Holy shit. Powerhouse live. The Camera Eye was shortened a little bit (I think they took the part with the samples out). Leave That Thing Alone was unexpected and quite funky. It took me a minute to figure out what was being played, because I always mix LTTA and WMT? up... it didn't help that they had lights flashing dice across the stage. :lol
The set seemed really short to me, even though they probably played around 3 hours like usual. I couldn't believe how quickly intermission came. But I guess it's a good thing when you're so engrossed in the music that it flashes by so quickly... ok I'm rambling now I think it's time to hit "Post". :P

It makes me mad because I want to see Faithless. The other 9,000 morons go to see the "Greatest hits" while I'd like to hear the songs never played. That's what happens to older bands that see want to be relevant and play newer songs. It's a shame.
Yeah, it bothers me a lot when people are super cynical about what the band plays.
I was having a discussion with someone I know about Iron Maiden's set for this tour, and they remarked that Iron Maiden playing all the new stuff was "pathetic and proved that they're tired old men, who want to play these shitty new songs when everyone just wants the classics."
Fuck. If you want to hear just the hits, put on the fucking radio. Let the real fans enjoy the treats the bands will give to the crowd at live shows.
-
Eh, you guys are painting with an awfully broad brush here. I wouldn't assume that anyone who is bored with "Faithless" is automatically someone who only wants the greatest hits.

If anything, the "tired old men" argument would apply only if they were touring nothing but the classics all the time. If anything, it proves that they are still relevant, and that their real fans know that there are plenty of great songs from the past three albums.

I beg to differ Kev. Yes, some avid Rush fans don't want to hear it. But the majority there want to see the hits and that's why album or new cuts fall flat.

I think you're underestimating the size of Rush's cult following.

Summer gigs for older bands pull out the average fans. I've seen Rush 26 times and I'm well aware of the cult following, but most cult fans want to see Rush do rarities not the same songs since we've seen them many times. ;D

Yeah, I would hardly call these guys "real Iron Maiden fans", so I don't take what they said seriously in any way, but it does fry me when someone questions the relevance of a band by their decision to break away from their hits and try to play what they want. Instead you get a lot of grouchy people saying I only knew 3 songs in the first set! (which is how it was at the Rush concert. Some old man came up to me and was like "What happened to Rush? They played all this strange shit...I only knew three songs in that first set!!!")

This guy should not be a Rush fan.

This is what I'm talking about. This guy hasn't seen a Rush show in about 20 years, hasn't bought a CD and came to see Limelight and Working Man. So when they see them they don't even know Presto, a song from 1989!!!
-
Granted, in my case, Rush was playing at a 2-week long festival. So, a bunch of people probably bought full passes, and would come to see whatever they were vaguely interested in.
In this old coot's case, he probably knew Subdivisions, Freewill, and The Spirit of the Radio in the first set because that's all he ever had heard of them.
I'm not going to criticize this guy for coming to a Rush show as a casual fan. But, to then be surprised and a little bit pissed off that Rush played songs you didn't know is just ridiculous and insulting to the people who actually took the time to delve into Rush's discography.
I don't like people...
-
It's only the boisterous ones that bug me. I for one want people to show up and see that Rush is playing better than when I saw them in the 80's. I can't believe how good they sound & play.
What other bands played the festival that day setra?

Is this frickin' Time Machine Tour coming the UK this century?! Me 'n' the old man wanna go see it.

For those with the tour book, did any of you notice Peart mistakenly said they had never played The Camera Eye live before?

Yeah, I saw that too. Was a little confused, because I was almost positive it was played on the Signals tour. Good to see I wasn't wrong.
And those pictures are awesome!

Great pics Nick.

What other bands played the festival that day setra?
No one else significant played that day. Just some local acts. I recall Rush saying that they would agree to play Ottawa Bluesfest if no one would be on the MBNA stage (the main stage) during that day.
So, only smaller local acts played on the smaller stages.

I posted some pics on my facebook. I'll link some of them here soon.

Dude I'm sure you were happy about it, seeing as they played "Marathon" and you had no idea they would be doing so.

Ok so here's PlaysLikeMyung's review of last night:
Awesome
More detailed:
My entire year was pretty much leading up to this day. The past 12/13 months had not been easy and I had been in an almost constant state of depression. One thought kept me going: Rush. My favorite band ever, and a band that could always put me in a better mood no matter how I felt. This concert was, quite literally, the most important thing in my life.
I diligently avoided any setlist spoilers (save for one that failboy decided to ruin for me) so as to be surprised at every turn, much like I was on the last tour (fucking Digital Man :metal). I was hoping for a few songs that I really wanted to hear, among them The Body Electric, pretty much anything from Fly By Night, Roll the Bones, Cut to the Chase, etc. Well, this setlist amazed and surprised me many times.
First off, the opening video was fucking hilarious. I don't know how they do it, but Rush continues to outdo themselves EVERY TIME. Let's just say I can never look at a sausage the same way... :lol. I particularly liked the "Gefilter" (lolgefiltefish), and Geddy's character's daughter "Kugel". He is SO Jewish :lol. Excellent segue into The Spirit of Radio. And let me just say that if Rush did record polka renditions of these songs, I'd buy them. Also Geddy playing tuba would be awesome.
The Spirit of Radio kicked ass, as usual. Then, out of nowhere: Time Stand Still. YES. I never expected it and was quite pleased to hear it. Definitely the best track on Hold Your Fire, though I would have liked to see Turn The Page as well. I liked how Alex played the synth lead in the chorus. I've never seen that before. Then Presto comes on. I like the song, but you could definitely see a change in the atmosphere in the venue. A lot of people, I'm guessing, had NO idea what they were hearing at first. Another pleasant surprise.
Next, Geddy introduces Stick it Out. Of all the songs they could have picked from Counterparts, they picked Stick it Out? An odd choice, but it got the crowd going again. A song from Snakes and Arrows next. Workin' Them Angels. My personal favorite from S&A, so I wasn't complaining. It's a great song. Then, amazingly, another song from Counterparts; Leave That Thing Alone. :metal. Totally unexpected. I never thought they'd play an instrumental that wasn't YYZ, La Villa or The Main Monkey Business. This setlist was looking to shake me up at every turn :D
After that, another song from S&A. This time it was one that wasn't played on the previous tour; Faithless. An underrated track as far as I'm concerned, I loved seeing it live and I hope they decide to play the remaining 3 songs from S&A on the next leg of the tour. BU2B was next. This song rocked FAR harder in concert than it did on the single, and that's saying something. I can't wait to hear all of Clockwork Angels when it's released. After that, Freewill. A standard song, and even though I like it, it really has to go. Geddy strains too much to sing it anymore, especially the last verse, and it sounds kind of mangled. I know it's a fan favorite, but I think it can be replaced.
The next song damn near made me shit my pants.
Marathon.
There's a long, complicated story involving this song for me, but I'll see if I can simplify it. You know that thing known as "love at first sight"? Where you see a girl and you immediately fall for her? Yeah, that's what this is like. From the first time I heard the song on A Show of Hands I loved it. It spoke to me. It made me feel feelings I don't think any woman is capable of making me feel. The chorus will bring tears to my eyes EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. But in a good way, of course. It is my favorite song of all time and the closest thing to Heaven I think I can imagine. Seeing it live was almost like a distant dream... it's not 1987 anymore... I didn't think I'd ever hear it. But I did. I don't think I can put into words how I felt when I heard it, but tears of joy were running the whole time (fortunately nobody noticed, I was sweating so much that you couldn't tell tears from sweat). The definite high-point of the evening for me and, dare I say it, the high point of my entire fucking life. The performance of it was absolutely stellar and if I had been struck dead immediately after, I would have died the happiest man on the planet.
The rest of the concert probably would have been irrelevant if not for the fact that they played all of Moving Pictures :P
Subdivisions was good as well. It's a great song to hear live.
Hearing Moving Pictures was great. Even though I had already seen Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight, and Witch Hunt, the other three tracks were outstanding. Red Barchetta was stellar, and The Camera Eye is such a rocking song it's a wonder they decided to stop playing it. Vital Signs was terrific as well. I love the bassline to it so much. So groovy.
After that they played Caravan, which, like BU2B, also rocked more live than in studio. I have high hopes for this upcoming album.
Neils Drum Solo was great. I don't know how he does it, but his solos are always interesting and orchestral. He truly is a drum artist.
After his solo Alex starts soloing a bit on the acoustic. He's a great guitar player. I wish his only solo album didn't scream so much 'meh'. His acoustic soloing eventually turned into Closer To The Heart. Another surprise, though I expected it what with all the rumors surrounding it's comeback. The crowd loved it, as did I.
2112 starts next. Growd goes insane. I knew they weren't going to play all of it, but dammit I wished real hard in my head :P. If only I had been around in 76... And then they close the set with Far Cry. An odd closing song, I think, but I really like the song so I wasn't complaining. Rush sure know how to write a hard rock song :metal
The encore was strange. Good strange, I mean. For both songs they mislead us with Polka intros, but that's the quirkiness I've come to expect from Rush :D
La Villa Strangiato was spectacular. That bass solo gets me every time. Love it. Rush could probably make a living writing nothing but instrumentals.
The final closing track was the one that Cole had spoiled for me. Although I knew it wasn't going to be played, I didn't know when it was going to be played. But the polka threw me off :lol. Working Man was great and everybody enjoyed it. A great track, but there are a few more songs off of the S/T that need more love.
After that the closing video played.
Fucking Jason Segel. I love you. Truly. Let's get married.
So funny. I Love You, Man was easily the best movie of 2009 if for no other reason that Rush made an appearance, and I'm glad that Jason was a part of this years video festivities (though the South Park Tom Sawyer intro is really hard to beat :rollin).
And I left the venue a happy camper, and everyone lived happily ever after
The end

DON'T MENTION ME PLM, THAT'S OKAY, YOU WON'T ME IN MY REVIEW EITHER. :p
-
PLM, just the fact that you got to see your favourite Rush song live actually put a smile on my face.
Hell, I got to see YYZ, my favourite Rush song, live (not that it's that rare of a song). Highlight of my evening was jumping up and down once the main riff began.
God, I wish I could relive that show again.

Everyone (who knows me more than most on DTF, at least) seems to understand how I feel about the song.
For me, this is more than just seeing my favorite song live. It was such a surreal and emotional experience. I don't think I'll ever be able to recreate it. I'm so glad I went to the show.
Now I actually feel bad. :P
Cole, here's a tip for you: When dealing with Rush fans, setlists/new songs/ etc have to be treated with Spoiler tags. There are purist fans out there who have NO desire to see anything/ hear anything in advance, and you should respect their wishes. Hopefully you won't make that mistake again

If you had been around in '76, you still would not have heard the song played in its entirety. That happened for the first time on the Test for Echo tour...

Great review, PLM. :tup
It truly is a great setlist, although I would change some songs in the first half...
-
Thanks
I thought the setlist was pretty good. Stick It Out could be swapped, but I still enjoyed it.
If I could pick out a setlist, it would look so weird to other people :P

Great review, PLM. :tup :tup
I also absolutely adore "Marathon," and I cannot wait to finally see it live in 29 days. :hat

Posting from the Jones Beach parking lot right after the show. It was tremendous for me to see Camera Eye live.

Oh yeah, and I saw Jordan Rudess at the JB show. He was snacking on a hot dog about 5 minutes before they came on haha.
-
I was just at the JB show.. amazing. Totally blown away.

Rush concert tonight! If I see him I hope to meet Lat there as well. :metal

I have absolutely nothing relevant to say. I just figured this would be an appropriate place for my 2,112th post.

Congrats. Now you'll be stuck with tons of updates from the Time Machine tour if you happen to look in your "new replies to your posts" link.

I never use that :P

I don't even know where that is.

I've never used that. Ever.

Line of the night tonight belonged to Mr. Geddy Lee: "No matter how many times a pigeon shits on Alex, we won't stop playing." :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
Anyway, awesome show. Of course. :coolio

Is this frickin' Time Machine Tour coming the UK this century?! Me 'n' the old man wanna go see it.
Unfortunately not. Which is a shame, because I'd love to hear some of these songs, like Time Stand Still and Marathon, and I know that when they do hit Europe on the next tour they'll have dropped these songs for a more traditional setlist.

Some thoughts:
-The opening videos for both sets were awesome; perhaps their best ones to date. Alex Lifeson never fails to make me laugh. :lol
-The opening trio of The Spirit of Radio, Time Stand Still, and Presto had me bonkers. That was probably the most energy I had until deep into the second set when 2112 kicked in. I love the bridge in Presto, and Alex really nailed the solo, which is pretty underrated. That song definitely moved up a few notches for me after last night, magic wand and all. ;)
-During the last vocal section of Tom Sawyer where Geddy sings, there is no guitar, so Alex was hamming it up for those in the front row and when Geddy said the line, "He gets high on you," Alex mocked did the fingers to the mouth smoking a joint thing and rolled his eyes. That had us howling. I2th row center, we were close enough to see it. :D
-Marathon was really good, but not quite as awe-inspiring as I hoped. I missed the laser guy and back screen effects from the 80s. That song begs for lasers and other screen stuff.
-Neil is getting old. Not even talking about that gut he has now :lol, he is not quite as fast as he used to be. My friend noticed this, too. He can still do quick little bursts and drum rolls, but he plays quite a few songs at a slower tempo than he used to. Alex and Geddy, on the other hand, are both still on the top of their game. But back to Neil, even a slightly less impressive than usual Neil is still pretty awesome. His new drum solo was pretty meh, though, except for the last two minutes.
-La Villa Strangiato absolutely destroyed me. At one point, my friend turned to me and said, "I don't know which one to watch!" I said, "Easy: Alex."
-Alex's one mess-up I noticed was when he plays the first chords in Witch Hunt after the intro, I think he forgot to hit a switch after the end of The Camera Eye, because when he played those Witch Hunt chords, nothing happened, and he got that OH SHIT look on his face, and quickly ran up, hit a foot pedal and then played them again. Haha.
-The Camera Eye came across really well, even if the band looked a bit bored playing it.
-Of the two new songs, Caravan sounded awesome.
-Closing the second set with Far Cry was just a bad decision. After Closer to the Heart and 2112, it was a total buzzkill. I looked around at the crowd and it looked major subdued after rocking like crazy for the two previous tunes. Fortunately, they got it all back with LVS and Working Man in the encore. :)
Overall, awesome, awesome show. Not sure where it ranks as far as the 10 Rush shows I have now seen, but it would be up there. Still had to beat the first show I saw in '91 or the VT tour, but this was one of the better ones. :hat
-
Great review Kev. I can't wait to see Presto live. Top 5 wishlist song for me. Buzz kill on Marathon. That song live is very uplfting to see. No surprise on Alex. The guy is the biggest ham I have ever seen live and love how he enjoys himself out there. Can't wait for Sept 14th!!
-
All I've been thinking about and listening to is RUSH, RUSH, RUSH. September 18th seems so far away D:
-
How awesome is this gif file (which apparently is Alex yelling at a drunk fan who was being obnoxious and annoying everyone in her section for much of the concert; she was eventually removed from the show by the band's security guy)?
I love how after he yells "Stop!" the first time, he actually gestures when he yells "Please stop!" He looks genuinely pissed.
-
He's a true Serbian, I can tell you that. ;D
The set list is so cool, especially tracks like Subdivisions, Marathon, Leave that thing alone and The Camera eye. I'm still not a huge fan of Presto, Time stands still and some songs from Snakes & Arrows, not the best choices from the particular albums. Far cry seems to be a fine closer, though, it's a great song.

I hear ya. Gonna be at that show as well. But I have a few things to hold me over - Uproar Festival, Iced Earth and Kamelot...

Watched Rush in Rio last night. Man, I wish they'd bring this tour over to Europe. :sadpanda:

I enjoyed both "Time Stand Still" and "Presto" much more than I thought I would. Hopefully you will, too. :)

Assuming they follow through on their plans to do a longer tour next year, I suspect they will hit some of Europe. No idea if the Time Machine theme will change or what changes will happen to the set list, but only time will tell.

The two forthcoming songs they played the other night were both heavy as fuck. Very loud. Lots of pyro. Definitely not Closer to the Heart type material.

I love how after he yells "Stop!" the first time, he actually gestures when he yells "Please stop!" He looks genuinely pissed.
She's lucky he didn't throw her down a flight of stairs.
-
OMG!!
Read this everyone!!! Read the part about the song Clockwork Angels!!!!!!!

Alex also said they would be playing "Jacob's Ladder" this summer, so even though he is my all-time favorite musician, I take most of what he says in regards to their future plans with a grain of salt.
-
It would be very cool to see a modern Rush epic. That makes me very excited. I'm actually more likely to believe him about this cool detail, but if he ever talks about what they're going to play on a tour, I won't hold him to it.
-
That made my day yesterday.
-
Holy shit :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :letam: :metal :metal
-
Well I doubt we'll see a modern "2112" or "Hemispheres", but maybe something more akin to Porcupine Tree's "Anesthetize", which Alex played a solo on, which I am totally okay with. The two new songs have a certain degree of heaviness which would lend themselves to some PT-ish influences, so it would be cool if the title track was something along those lines.
-Marc.
-
And a very happy 57th birthday to my favorite guitarist off all time, Mr. Lifeson! :metal
-
So I was at the Las Vegas show like a two weeks ago, amazing show :metalja. Man, Alex was on fire, he nailed solo after solo in the most amazing manner, truly a wonderful experience. Agreed with most of the points already mentioned, but, I believe Presto was amazing, it really worked live. Moving Pictures blew my mind off completely (really enjoyed The Camera Eye, really organic song that came great live IMO, and Vital Signs rocked my socks, the ending was orgasmic man). Also, BU2B was really, really rocking. Of course the three videos were amazing and the band was really tight, but Alex was the standout member that night IMO.
Really an excellent concert ;D

Personally, I can't imagine Rush ever sounding like PT whatsoever, influences or otherwise. But it would certainly be interesting to hear...
-
I wouldn't get too excited guys, it's probably only gonna be like 8 or 9 minutes. It's cool, but I wouldn't expect a huge sidelength epic like 2112 or Hemispheres.
-
Yeah, I was kind of thinking it'd be like Natural Science.
-
If it's anything at all like Natural Science, I will LOVE it.
-
If it's anything at all like Natural Science, I will LOVE it.
"Natural Science" is under 10 minutes, which is a realistic thing for modern Rush... but it does have sections/parts, so it could end up being like that. I hope it's pretty cohesive, and less like "we've got 3-4 song ideas we'll just patch together" and more like "we've got this group of riffs and this progression, let's really iron them out together to create a musical collage of these ideas to melt into a solid piece of music".
I'll end up loving it anyway so what do I care :tup
-Marc.
-
The show tonight at the Minnesota State Fair was excellent. It was Alex's birthday so they presented him with a footlong corn dog and a pork chop on a stick. After Peart's drum solo, you could tell Alex had just ate the corndog, because there were a few crumbs around his mouth.
-
OH MY FUCKING GOD YES!
-
Double post.
So, the show was absolutely awesome. But no show is without it's faults. I really disliked the new arrangements with The Temple of Syrinx and Working Man. Everything other than that was brilliance.
-
new arrangements with The Temple of Syrinx
What are you talking about? They didn't change anything. Unless you mean the down tuning, but they've been doing that for years.
-
Allentown show was fucking incredible.
-
No, he just sang it differently. Accents and shit.
Hey Nick...I owe you a million.
BTW, there were 10,000 people there and I found you...without trying. Thanks man.

He's been doing that for literally DECADES now. He simply cannot sing it the way he did back in 1976; hasn't been able to for a long time. It is no big deal.
-
Oh, I know. It was just one small complaint about one really big and awesome show.
I really really really hated the Working Man intro though. I think there would be nothing better than having that intro blast into your skull, but no, let's go with polka.
-
Eh, it's fun, and it's different. And when they finally bust into the "normal" song, it is pretty awesome. I have never been a big fan of that song, but it slays live. :metal
-
ITT numbers fails hard
-
No. Not at all.
That initial DUH!! DUH! DU DUH!
Well, you get my point, is the best part of the song, and not seeing that was disappointing but like I said, it was still an amazing show. Absolutely amazing.

Glad you enjoyed it! :tup :tup

Numbers is still failing!
For someone on his 4th Rush tour and 9th show those little changes are awesome little ways of spicing up the shows, and the way they blasted into the regular song was amazing.
-
I could be mistaken, but I thought 2112 was in standard tune this time around.
-
Nope, pretty sure its still tuned down. Not as good as the original tuning, but its nice to see the song live at least.
-
They've been tuning down since the TFE tour. Geddy can't hit the high notes in the olders songs anymore.

They've been tuning down since the TFE tour. Geddy can't hit the high notes in the olders songs anymore.
I'm aware of that, and it's always been plainly noticeable. This time around, it sounded normal to me. Furthermore, Geddy didn't even try to sing the high parts this time around, which was also noticeable.

Seeing these guys TOMORROW! :metal :caffeine:

I get you El Barto. You meant the drop tuning seems normal now to you. I'd rather still see them play some old songs and drop a step for Ged than see them not play any.

Nope, still not there. It didn't sound dropped this time around, but has for the previous 10 years. What I thought two weeks ago was that they were playing it in the proper key and Geddy just wasn't trying the high parts.
I agree with your position, though. I just wish they'd take that approach with some of the other classics. It bums me out that I'll probably never get to see Fountain or Hemispheres played live.
-
WELL THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME
-
Third and final show of the tour for me tonight. Quite a storm coming up the Atlantic... I'll be hoping that doesn't hit us too badly.

Rush put on yet another awesome show last night in Holmdel. Always sad though to hear the final few notes of the show knowing it's the last bit of Rush for the year, no more shows and probably no new music until 2011.
-
Did you see Jordan Rudess at the show by any chance? He tweeted a pic that he was there, seemed like he was left part of the stage.
-
I heard he was there, but I did not see him at all.
-
He was at the LI show that I was at.
-
So we have proof that Portnoy and Rudess were at Rush shows, and a Myung sighting as well. What about Petrucci?! I figured he would've caught them by now, but maybe not... if he's busy doing ANYTHING, it should be his upcoming solo album.

I wish I could have gone to Rush show number 33 for me, but I couldn't justify it financially....especially knowing what 2011 will bring.
I still have Allentown in my head despite the traffic getting in and out there. It's incomprhensible to me that they just keep getting better pushing 60. I really want a DVD of this leg with the two intro segments and some other screen shots.

Rumor is is that the Pittsburgh show will be filmed.

I thought Geddy would have some vocal trouble, since the tour's almost over, but he nailed every note he could. The videos were even better than the S&A tour, especially the last one. So many memorable quotes...It was a blast from start to finish. Sciopath and I were at the front of the lawn on Geddy's side. Musical. Fucking. Bliss.
Setlists spoilers/My personal high points (if anyone still cares)...
Highlights were Leave That Thing Alone, the new songs, Vital Signs/Moving Pictures, Marathon (that light/effects show was amazing!), Time Stand Still, 2112, and La Villa Strangiato. Presto is a much better song live than in the studio. I have a new appreciation for it.
-
:metal
I want to see them again
-
I definitely agree that "Presto" is much better live. Part of that is how weak the Presto CD sounds, and part of it is the song simply having more energy. Glad you had a great time, sky! :tup :tup

How is that first part a spoiler? I said I liked the videos, I said where I was, and I said Geddy was awesome. Is anyone really going to be spoiled by the fact Rush uses videos between songs/sets? I understand why the second part was moved, though.
-
You should frankly be happy I went through the work I did moving things instead of just deleting the post outright (which would have been quick and simple as opposed to finding the correct thread, copying your stuff and quoting it here). You knew there was a tour thread so why would you not post your reactions about the tour there? Spoilers or not I was simply keeping discussions in the proper place.
-
Is anyone still spoiler free? :lol I actually thought they were all done touring. i guess they still have a couple more dates?
-
Tour ends in a day or two I think. In any case there is a Time Machine tour thread, so discussion about the tour probably should go there. :p

John (JD) Roberts of CNN interviewed the guys today and even jammed with them. He's featured in the documentary and is a Toronto native and was the host of CityTV Torontos MuchMusic show a loooong time ago. The opening music to that show was Overture from 2112 and he interviewed them many times back in the day and is a huge fan as you can see when he jammed with them (Limelight). There are 2 videos on this page. One is a 5-minute interview and the other is a jam with him and the guys.

They better record a live DVD for this tour so I can relive seeing my favorite song of all time, The Camera Eye :D...orrr they could bring it back next year along with Cygnus X-1 and Xanadu, record a DVD, then I cream my pants as I watch it. *crosses fingers*

I think they could probably get away with releasing JUST the Moving Pictures part of the second set on CD and DVD from a select show in a 2-disc set, package it as the 30th Anniversary of Moving Pictures and release it next February, 2011, thirty years after the original album was released. And maybe on the DVD, throw in the other unique performances (songs and jams and other bits) as bonus material, rather than releasing the WHOLE show, which might get some fans upset at the whole "Why does every tour need a full official CD and DVD release?!" debate... then again, some of those same people complained when the R30 set wasn't the whole show and we missed out on 8 songs.
Either way, I'd be content with some sort of just-Moving Pictures release...although if they recorded and released a whole show, I wouldn't be too upset about that either. ;D

I was one of those that thought they should have released all of R30 at the time. Unfortunately it wasn't the best of perfrormances except for a handful of songs ("Red Barchetta," "Earthshine," "Between The Wheels" being three off the top of my head that were awesome.) They finally added the full show when they released it on Bluray last year.
They just keep getting better and better, so I would definately welcome the whole show in this case because I think the set will significantly change next year to include more of the new album.
Rush fans will complain either way, so I'd rather have the option to buy an awesome performance with liners and art to match rather than have to rely bootlegs to satisfy my needs.

The Time Machine Tour may not be quite over!
"Now we're thinking we might come back in spring and play some shows in Britain. For a while we steered away from big festivals, because you've got to be prepared to strip it all down for that kind of show. But we played some festivals this summer in Canada and in the US and they went really well. So it's got us thinking that maybe that's something we would do over here in the future."- Geddy Lee, BBC.com, November 10, 2010
-Marc.

Good news for our British friends :tup

Good news for our British friends :tup
And of course, US.
Although it would be a lot easier on my bank account if they just went in and did the album....
-
DAMN!!!
I knew this was going to happen.
Rushisaband is reporting rumors of a two night stand at Madison Square Garden in February/March.
Must find money.
-
:icwomangs:
Now THAT is going to be a show worth traveling for
-
:(
So tempting. Soooo tempting.
If this happens, we should have a DTF meet up.
-
I honestly hope Rush does not put finishing the new record aside to start touring again next year. Finish the new record before doing any more touring. I believe that was the original goal, right?
-

I'm assuming they are just gonna do a short stint through a few US cities at the end of the tour. Maybe they'll roadtest a few more songs from the album as well.

I believe they are in the studio NOW finishing the album's songs. Nick has commented on how the recording process has been going, talking about songs (particularly the "epic" title track "Clockwork Angels"), so I think they'll be in the studio up til the Holidays, take a break, then gear up for the tour in late winter/early spring, do a couple months worth of shows, then take another break as the album gets mastered and ready for a summer release.

Considering I've already seen the Time Machine tour 3 times I hope that they at least will have the new album out and be playing more songs from it this time around. Either way I will probably have to limit myself to 1 show.

I'm thinking they may keep the same two new songs "Caravan" and "BU2B", but maybe switch out a couple older tunes. They'll most likely keep Moving Pictures in the set, as it's one of the focuses/highlights of the tour. I hope they keep first-time songs like "Faithless" and "Presto". I doubt they'll take the time to learn anything extremely rare or not played in the last few years. I wouldn't mind it if they replaced "Faithless" with another tune from Snakes & Arrows though, like "Bravest Face" or "Good News First"... or, just tossing this out there, one of the EIGHT songs not played live from Vapor Trails!!!
-Marc.
-
They should cut Stick it Out and play Cut to the Chase instead
And they should keep Marathon. Always keep Marathon
I also think they should cut Subdivisions. It's an amazing song, but it's been played a lot lately. How about Losing It? Or The Analog Kid?
-
Subdivisions is such a crowd pleaser of late they will keep it.
-
I don't want it to be the only song they play from Signals though.
I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE for them to bring out a song from Fly By Night again, but I seriously doubt it'll happen :(
-
"Losing It" is great, but I think it is too much of a studio production to pull off live. I mean, triggering that violin solo live would just be strange, and I can't imagine the song without it.
I continue to be shocked at how little "The Analog Kid" has been played over years, so I pretty much figure they are never gonna play it. If they do, awesome, but I am not counting on it.
I suspect the set list next year might see just a few minor changes at best, kind of like how the 2nd leg of the S&A tour in '08 was almost the same as the first leg in '07, except for changing four songs. In fact, assuming it will be almost the same, I say, ditch "Faithless" and "Stick It Out" right away and replace them with tried and true fan favorites, thereby making the flow of the first set a lot better.
-
You know, if they replace Marathon, it should be with Middletown Dreams
:heart :heart :heart
-
The only song I havn't seen live from PW is Emotion Detector. I doubt they'll ever play it. I love Alex's solo from that song.
-
FEELINGS RUN HIGH
-
I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE for them to bring out a song from Fly By Night again, but I seriously doubt it'll happen :(
I doubt Geddy could sing most of the songs on it now. Plus, I am pretty sure he thinks the title track hasn't aged well at all, and the only other song (besides "By-Tor") they would probably even consider is "Anthem," and I know I don't want to hear Geddy struggle trying to sing that chorus now. I know I said I don't want medleys, but I'd be down with another R30-type overture, where they play a bunch of instrumental parts from really old songs that they don't want to play in full anymore.
You know, if they replace Marathon, it should be with Middletown Dreams
:heart :heart :heart
They had better not replace "Marathon."
"Middletown Dreams" would be awesome, but that would suck for fans in U.S. cities that got them this year, but won't next year.
Also, I really wish they would get back to touring in arenas, instead of always doing outdoor shows now.
-
i think the reason theyve been doin outdoor shows lately is because theyve been touring in the summer.
-
I don't know Kev. The Boston show I went to in Sept. was indoors and the Garden isn't the best place for sound.
-
I don't know Kev. The Boston show I went to in Sept. was indoors and the Garden isn't the best place for sound.
And before that was Mohegan Sun, which is either a hit or miss depending on how good the sound crew is.
Luckily, Rush has a pretty good sound crew. ;) (Although there were a LOT of problems during the Boston show!) I wouldn't mind seeing them playing in Mansfield again.
