Quote
Synopsis

A tale of two children- Hayden and River, who stumble upon a mystery that will seemingly cost them their lives.

The River Empires (band) is the soundtrack to the movie trilogy, The River Empires I,II, and II. Six albums will span across three films, two for each installment. Yet as the films will be told from beginning to end of the tale, the soundtracks will be released from end to beginning. This debut record does is not part of the six soundtracks, but an Epilogue to the entire film trilogy that is yet to be revealed. It is not a conclusion, but a thematic look back on what has not yet come to pass. The idea of this first, two-disc debut of The River Empires (band) is to eventually, after the films and all soundtracks are released, be a nostalgic look back on the beginning to the end of a beautiful yet terrifying story known as The River Empires.

After four or five times all the way through hearing this 88-minute two-volume, 2-disc debut record, I have been pretty thoroughly won over. How or why that is? 1st of all, as for something that long that includes 29 track titles, it hardly feels that long. And the reason that is, the themes seem to flow from track-2-track. Many of the tracks are actually just short under-1-minute movements (or sound bytes). Others are instrumental pieces that hardly over-extend their welcome.

But after a couple of times through, of course a lot of the memorable parts, themes or melodies do stand out.

Our Neighbor, the Earth
The Coventry
The Harbourland
A Toast to the Snake King
Three Tigers
From Outside the Cellar
A Dimmer Lux
Witches Blossom
The Curse of Maybel Cains
The Marching of the Clocks

Many of the elements about this record, that are worth noting, include: Suites, reoccurring themes, various chamber instruments including xylophone, (alto-saxophone?), cello, accordion, french horn, banjo, fiddle, and wonderful female vocal harmonies.

The lyrics and movements give the story a gradual yet still rewarding experience for the listener. Although not necessarily noticed until a few times through. Many songs have these sections that seem very meticulous. The themes are very rich, you can't help but get sucked in. Also it seems likely to notice many new things with each listening. Whether it be lyrically, or some subtle arrangement in the music.

This album very effectively tells a story, or paints a picture, while avoiding cheesiness, melodrama, or even pretentiousness. Something to keep in mind, is the fact it is a soundtrack for what is three motion pictures, the lead creator, Jessy Ribordy, plans to head up. It has the name "Epilogue" as part of it's title due to the fact it is the music that is a soundtrack for the entire story. What order the movies will be made-in, to go with these seven volumes (there will be five more volumes/albums). And whether the films will be made after the whole series of albums are finished being released, or as they are being-made, remains to be seen. But that is definitely something to follow in the future of this band/project.

This really doesn't include much guitar. In spots, there is some, but it's amazing how well the music works despite that fact. But for that reason, it doesn't seem like it has much actual "rock" sound, if there is such a thing. But the different instruments, including piano and drums, really fill the sound well enough. My guess is Casey Crescenzo had a fair amount to do with that and what is excellent production quality, very much on the level or worthy of the last two The Dear Hunter album's production.

This album could be described as folk, chamber-folk, chamber-bluegrass, progressive-folk, or many other things. I don't find it matters by lacking guitar, a highly technical or heavy part, it's style in no way hurts it's unique quality. In fact, I'd say it makes it more original. How many artists have combined folk and bluegrass music, this way? Not many. Sufjan Stevens or The Decemberists I suppose, but not really how this whole project is being approached with a story-arc and the music accompanying films (or the music really being "soundtracks" for the movies, rather than the other way around).

It also seems to be promoted or mentioned via some christian sources. I guess Jessy Ribordy and Josh Shroy's previous band, Falling Up, had some of their music lumped-in with the Christian Rock scene. But there is not much, if any obvious evidence of christian music on here. At least from hearing it enough times, even without reading the lyrics (yet). King's X and Mute Math were at one point treated as Christian Rock as well, but they never were.

I really can't recommend this record enough as I'd say it's probably the most ambitious album I've heard since Apes and Androids "Blood Moon" in 2008. And The Dear Hunter fans especially could find it worth their while given Casey actually is a member and is quite notice-ably involved with the song writing, album arrangement, and the production.

92/100

bump.

this thing is 5-stars. Definitely my Top record for 2010. I'd love to see something challenge it, but I honestly don't think anything will.

maybe one of the best things about it is how many of the songs or parts I didn't like as much as others, only have become better. Very similar to the last 1/3 of Blood Moon. Those songs that don't seem as great as the rest of the record, now are as enjoyable as any part of it.

Songs like The Coventry, Catacombs And Orchards, The Harbourland, The Backyard In Sparkles, and An Elliptic Figure From Borelli.

I also recently have gotten into Falling Up's final record "Fangs" which while it's pretty different than TRE, is still evident of how good of a songwriter Jessy Ribordy is (and Josh Shroy for that matter). Quite experimental, a bit like The Receiving End of Sirens or Minus the Bear even.

I'm loving this album as well right now. It's a bit too long for my taste, but it's still great! I had to force myslef not to listen to it today so I don't burn myself out on it.

"Mnemosyne" - the first of three stories that encompass The River Empires.

Quote from: The River Empires Facebook
It will technically be part of the last 2 album titles since we are writing the music backwards. Sorry so confusing, I get confused myself A LOT. Basically the next record will be titled under the third part of the story "The Waterfall House". There will be six more records. So the last 2 we do as a band will fall under the title "Mnemosyne". But the first film you see will be Mnemosyne. In other words: I'm. not. good. at. sleeping.

Bump.

So, i listened to this album today... and the result:  :) :omg:  :metal (in that order)
I've never really heard anything as mindblowing as this, normally albums requires a certain amount of time, but after 2 listens, i consider this probably the best album released this year.
It's just magnificent and beautiful in a special way, and it might climb high and become one of my all time favorites. :)

Favorite songs this far: Overture in Thales Summer, The Coventry, The Harbourland, A Toast to the Snake King and The Marching of Clocks, but all songs are so good. :):)

I think I overdid this album a bit a couple of months back. I didn't listen to it for a month or so. But I listened to it again the other day and it's still fantastic. Front runner for my favorite album of 2010 for sure.

I think SoundscapeMN wrote something about it earlier, like.. that you had to go their website to get it or something.
I'm not exactly what it was, if he didn't write it here it might be in the 5/8-thread.
Kinda lame i guess because you want all the tracks. :/

But i gotta point out again how brilliant this album is.
Probably my favorite of the year this far. :)

Thats pretty much the reason why i didn't get the cd, and have a burned copy in my bookshelf.
Normally im all about buying & supporting the artist, but i don't want a cd that lacks one of the songs, for me that is kinda devastating if you look at the whole picture. :/

they mentioned a few weeks later it was to be available for free to download. I'm not sure if it was and was lifted, or Jessy never got around to it, along with putting the reprinting of the cds with it. Odds are he's been pretty busy with work on the 1st film/films and the upcoming The Gloomcatcher EP, he hasn't had time to get to it yet. But I would expect it to eventually come out with the lyrics, more artwork and Witches Blossom eventually.

Not sure how I missed this thread.  This is easily the best new album I've heard in a while.  I've also pledged $25 (although I opted for the $10-level reward - already got the album, and I think it's way cool to have a chance to actually become a part of the story, even if only a very minor part).

But they're still like $7K away from their ultimate goal... so keep the pledges coming in!

also I put on the demos again today. Man, the arrangement of the Dimmer Lux DEMO is awesome! I almost prefer it to the album version now. The vocal harmonies and string arrangement is godly.

Title: Re: The River Empires: Epilogue I LOVE THIS NEW ALBUM!

from a bitrate standpoint, they're 320 kps. Some of the songs sound like demos, but some certainly sound more than good enough to listen to. I mean Jessy emphasized in that video, some of them are only demos and weren't mastered, but say compared to The Dear Hunter's early demos, they're just as good if not better actually.

I just noticed Casey Crescenzo posted this on twitter

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fallingup/falling-ups-new-album

Falling Up, Jessy and Josh Shroy's other/older band, are also working on a new record, and looking to fund it (like they tried with the upcoming TRE album). And it's impressive to notice how many pledges and and how much money they've already raised (over $7,000). I chipped in anyway, for one, because I do enjoy their last album, Fangs, especially. But also am curious what they may do next.

so the aim for the new The River Empires record "Mars/Brighton II" is now more likely Fall. And there's supposed to be a documentary of some sort included with it. Jessy mentions it in a new interview here:
https://sideburnsmovement.blogspot.com/2011/03/interview-with-jessy-ribordy-from-river.html

I am pretty excited for that, but in the short term, Jessy's focus right now is with Falling Up who announced their new album "Your Sparkling Death Cometh" is being released in June (28th according to Wikipedia).

Hello there fine folk! So I wanted to update everyone, being it's the last day of 2012, and obviously the new album hasn't come out yet! I'll keep this brief and to the point.

During the last two years, a few situations have occurred. Due to some sensitive subject matter, I shouldn't explain the details. But because of the circumstances, my priorities had to shift around and a couple other projects had to be finished first. I've worked on the new TRE album for two years and slowly ebbed away at it. But I haven't been able to put the finishing time into it that it deserves, due to what's stated above.

Once in a while, when I'd see the light at the end of the tunnel, my excitement would overwhelm me (hence the premature declarations of the release date). So for that I apologize.

I will no longer announce dates until the album is packaged! That's my New Year's resolution to all of you TRE fans. And despite all that has happened the past couple years, I am still stoked as ever for you all to hear the new album. Although it will still continue the tale, moving backward, it also holds a lot of my personal experiences within the songs. I greatly treasure what this new album is becoming with each passing day, and I look forward to sharing it with all of you. Thanks for being the best fans! Looking forward to a great year!

Jessy

bump.

I know this is super old, and this bump is nothing HUGE, but

Jessy did reply on twitter a few months ago about The River Empires, The Gloomcatcher and an Unnamed Musical Project he is still planning to have.

@FigureFilbert TRE, TGC, solo project, unnamed band all will continue, but their releases will just be spaced over the next couple years

Their album was so good that I'm still bummed we never got the promised sequel. Maybe it will happen but I've heard so many "its happening next year" or "we are gonna do it" that it's almost another Tool situation. :(

you're right (although with Tool, the financial part may not be so much of the issue, that TRE it may), and it may be awhile, but the post I passed along before was from December.

He just added a few minutes ago:

I'm waiting to announce until the first single and artwork are ready so that it's special. Keep holding tight. You're all the best!

I guess I'm not sure why he would have started a new unnamed project at least, and not actually do anything with it.

TRE though, it's music that requires so much time and people I presume, the time frame could be well longer.

I completely forgot about TRE but I was eagerly waiting for a new album. I'll definitely listen and buy when it comes out.

Never heard of these guys but I am intrigued by the sound of Epilogue and reading that Casey Crescendo was involved only increases that intrigue. Will be checking this out soon  :tup

Now I haven't heard of this band, but looking at the posts here, it seems like they started off with something way too ambitious for anyone to attempt. It's like Sufjan Stevens trying to write an album for each US state (50 of them), or Guillemots, who attempted to release 4 albums in a year based on each season. Coming up with the ideas is the easy part, the actual execution of those ideas is somewhat harder. And it leaves fans who were anticipating them to happen disappointed. I mean, look how long it took Mike Portnoy to complete the 12-Step Suite. It became a far bigger beast than even he thought it would.

I think you would definitely like it knowing how much you like TDH. It's perhaps more to the indie side than prog, but if you like the strong melodies in TDH I think you will really like The River Empires. :)

Cheers Zant, yea my love for TDH is what makes me think I'll like this. I also really love hearing experimentation with different instruments. I'll listen to this today or tomorrow and report back later  :tup

I actually just revisited this album again this morning.

So rich.

At the same time, given its title "Epilogue" many of the songs/pieces etc seem to be almost samples of what could be expanded ideas musically. Which when Jessy came out with the projection of 6 more records, the way that each song or section of 2-4 songs on Epilogue could represent 1 of the Albums/Chapters makes a lot of sense.

So first impressions, I liked it :tup

Being my first listen there was obviously a lot to take in and digest. It is a very long album and felt like it took a while to get going. The beginning is void of the upbeat songs that rear their heads later in the album. I can clearly hear Casey's influence in a lot if the music and I am pretty sure I will fall in love more with each listen. I hope to give this multiple spins over the coming weeks and give it the time it deserves. I can't say any particular songs stood out as I was listening whilst at work, I did like some of the upbeat songs. Good stuff and I'm glad I checked this out.

also Jessy just posted this (take it for it is worth)

NOT The River Empires, but I have often been reminded in some ways of TRE (or The Gloomcatcher) and Falling Up by, Falling Up member Nick Lambert's project Northern Abbey.

Northern Abbey just released a new EP "Ceremonies" today which also features Jessy Ribordy.

that post Jessy made on twitter was in March of 2018.

There has been nothing from or TRE since, but Jessy keeps quiet.

his imdb page kind of explains a lot of it

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5263681/

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Jessy Ribordy is a composer, writer, multi-instrumentalist, and former frontman of the indie rock band Falling Up.

Shortly after graduating high school, Falling Up signed a contract with Tooth and Nail Records and released their debut album in 2003. For the next twelve years they toured extensively, performed across worldwide stages, and released thirteen albums (7 which were released independently) that included nine consecutive number one hits. Falling Up released their final album in 2015 and then disbanded, in order to focus on their own careers and projects.

Since 2015, Jessy has focused entirely on his career as both a composer for films and television, and writing his own screenplays (which are heavily influenced by his songwriting). His music can be heard in commercials for brands like Adidas, AT&T, and Samsung.

Jessy's music can also be found in video games, apps, and soundtracks for table top RPG games. His style alternates between orchestral, electronic, ambient, and organic sound - but regardless of the style, there is always an added personal touch of folklore and mythic.

Jessy is married and has two children.

bump.

so...I'm not counting any chickens, but, Jessy Ribordy did a Q&A on the Falling Up Discord yesterday, and answered a question and talked about The River Empires.

Go to 40:30

I guess they want to make another record and Casey and him have been chatting as recently as last year.

It very well may be a number of more years, but it sounds more like not IF but WHEN.
