Scoring System:Y'know what I'm just gonna reuse this graphic I put in my videos. Half-point scoring, any more granular than that would drive me insane.
Tastes:Whoo boy this is where DTF is gonna struggle. I still listen to plenty of metal and metal-adjacent music, it’s like, my thing, but I’ve been increasingly picky about it in recent years because very little of it surprises me anymore.
I would say I’m a musical adventurer more than someone who tends to stick to any one sound for too long – I’m constantly in need of new sounds, new genres, otherwise I get bored fast. Like, I can’t argue with sheer quality when I see it, but unless you’re clearing that high bar in a genre I’m really saturated on, it’s probably not gonna stand out to me. On the flipside, something “new” or “interesting” that I haven’t heard before is more likely to leave a stronger first impression, which is what matters the most in a roulette, if you ask me.
And more than that, I like music that makes me
feel. I crave emotions. I’m much, much less impressed by sheer, dry technicality that I was a decade ago, big, epic scope and strong emotional cores do way more for me than a three minute wank solo. To that extent, I need some
melody in my music, man.
As far as metal goes, I like me some prog metal first and foremost, though my tastes trend towards the heavier stuff – less power-prog and more prog-death, basically. Not exclusively, but I tend to like it more. No djent. I’m preeeetty much saturated on atmospheric black metal so unless it’s like, top of the line, it’s probably topping out at like a 7/10 for me. Post-metal, symphonic metal, maybe death metal and black metal, not awful choices but not my faves. Power metal, folk metal, doom metal, classic heavy metal, not so much my thing. Thrash metal, sludge metal, nu-metal, please don’t.
My genre of choice in recent years has been stuff along the post-hardcore spectrum – emo and pop punk on the lighter end, screamo and some metalcore on the heavier end, though post-hardcore itself is my favorite. Also big into synthpop – less so other pop genres, but hyperpop and electropop can have their moments. Not so much into art pop or chamber pop. Rock and prog rock I don’t really actively seek out but bands with a cool, jazzy bent to them can catch my ear. Quieter, more atmospheric genres like post-rock, ambient, and drone I can enjoy as background music but probably aren’t gonna work in the context of a roulette. Uhh. What else. I like
some country and rap but I’m very particular about it, so, probably not?
Not that I expect anyone here to listen through all of it, but here’s a short playlist compiling as much of my tastes as I can muster, both long-time favorites and recent obsessions. Just to give some ideas.
Enjoy the chaos.
