Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've posted, and I hope you're all doing well!
I wanted to make a thread specifically for the Nintendo Switch, since the console is doing so well and there's much to talk about. I haven't read many of the recent posts in the Official Videogame thread, but I feel it'd be cool for the Switch to have its own thread. The old Nintendo thread also seems to be kind of dead. If any mods feel this is unnecessary, feel free to take it down :tup
Honestly, I can say without a doubt that this console got me back into gaming. Probably not super ideal since I'm in grad school, but hey, gotta have fun somehow :lol
Just in case anyone is interested, I'll list the games I have for it. I'm open to any good recommendations, as well as giving recommendations for games.
My Switch collection so far:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 60+ hours. Fun game that I'm hesitating to beat because I don't feel I'll be super motivated to go back through it if I do. So I'm taking a bit of a break.
Super Mario Odyssey - 15+ hours. Love the game, so much fun. Didn't take very long to beat. Not quite looking to find all the moons just because I'd rather allocate that time to different games.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 15+ hours. Great multiplayer game, especially local. However, I don't find myself playing this much alone. Already did pretty much everything I could do.
Splatoon 2 - 10+ hours. Recently got this. I really dig the multiplayer, lots of fun.
Rayman Legends - 10+ hours. Love this game. Did a single play through of the main story levels. Going to go back and try to 100% this one. One of the best platformers I've ever played. Gorgeous visuals and music, perfect for the Switch.
Stardew Valley - 20+ hours. Put in these 20 hours within the first few days of getting the game. Took a bit of a break. Love the relaxing tone of this one and can't wait to go back. Great stress reliever right here.
Enter the Gungeon - Probably about 10 hours. Just got this on sale. So much fun! I love the challenge and I feel like this has such high replay value.
The End is Nigh - 5+ hours. A bit like Super Meat Boy if anyone has ever played it. I think this is a bit harder though because it requires a bit more precision. Lots of fun and rewarding.
Overcooked! - 4+ hours. One of my favorite multiplayer games. However, it's quite difficult. It's complete chaos and makes you reconsider your friendships. I only play this with others. Seems impossible doing it all alone.
vs. Super Mario Bros - <1 hour. I've turned this game on a couple times at most. I got it on sale when I first got my Switch, just so I could have it there. I'll likely get the itch to play this sometime.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime - 1+ hour. I really do love this game, but I find few opportunities to play it. Again, it's another great multiplayer title, but I feel it's at its best with 3 others. Each person controlling a part of the ship is such a unique idea, I just wish I had more opportunities to play it with others. It works well as a 2 player adventure, but I find it quite difficult.
Inversus - 1+ hour. It's a pretty simple puzzle shooter. Cool idea but also one that I only have the desire to play with others. Bought this on sale!
Perception - Still haven't played. Heard very mixed reviews about it. I feel like it's right up my alley, but I'm looking to beat Oxenfree before I get to it. I don't really like playing multiple story based games at once.
Thumper - Probably about 5 hours. My most recent purchase, and currently on sale in the eShop. Holy shit! This is already one of my favorite games on the Switch. Such an innovative idea. I've always enjoyed rhythm games like guitar hero and rock band, but this does feel a bit different. It's super fast-paced, and looks and sounds gorgeous. If anyone wants a challenging rhythm game, pick it up!
Oxenfree - 4+ hours. I love it so far. I'm a sucker for the walking simulator type games. I crave a good story and good writing over almost anything else in gaming nowadays. This definitely has it. I'm probably about to play some more of this tonight.
The Deer God - <1 hour. Neat little side scroller, but not much to it. One of the first games I got. A friend told me to buy it so I did. Not really sure why though. :lol
Any gamer knows it's incredibly easy to create a massive backlog of games that will likely never be touched. I'm trying not to do that with the Switch, but it certainly is hard with the plethora of great titles released.
Just to raise some interesting questions:
- What games are you most looking forward to this year?
- What are you favorite/least favorite Switch titles?
- E3 predictions?
- In what ways do you think the Switch could be improved?
-
Looking forward to Fire Emblem this year and Metroid Prime 4 whenever it finally comes out. Breath of the Wild is one of the best games I've ever played, though there is room for improvement so I'm excited to see what they do with the next Zelda. I've put in around 400 hours across multiple play-throughs
-
I've really wanted to get one of these (for Zelda, Mario and also Mario Kart), but I can't justify the high cost of the console, games and even the added accessories. Keep waiting for a price drop, but it doesn't seem to be coming - which is good for Nintendo I suppose, it's nice to see them still doing well.
-
I picked up 'Shovel Knight' a few weeks ago. One of the games I'd heard a lot of good things about but never picked up before on any format, I'd a really good old school platformer, it's has a nice difficulty balance for me - not too hard, but slightly up from casual gaming.
Quick question....On Overcooked is it couch co-op only, or is there online? Also how does it play with only 2 players?
-
Holy shit FlyingBizkit, how are you?
I don't have a nintendo switch but I plan on picking one up in the next month or so, I really want to play Mario and Zelda.
-
This is actually a good idea because I feel like I derail the main game thread too much  Nice collection you have there Bizkit. I want a lot of cheaper titles but there's a lot of factors that keep me from buying them: I dislike mobile games/ports, visual novel-type experiences, and cheap games that are like an hour or two long. I want to avoid filling my Switch up with games like those. Then there are other games that I've already bought on Steam but might buy again... not enough time or money to get everything!
My collection (physical copies are bold)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
Kirby Star Allies
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Fire Emblem Warriors (currently obsessed with this and will probably continue to play religiously until Hyrule Warriors drops)
Disgaea 5 Complete
Sonic Mania
Slain: Back From Hell
Fast RMX
Cave Story+
- What games are you most looking forward to this year?
Yoshi, Octopath Traveler, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Super Smash Bros.
- What are you favorite/least favorite Switch titles?
Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Odyssey would be my top 3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Mario + Rabbids aren't far behind. Least favorite is Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Slain: Back From Hell. Infuriating games with BS difficulty.
- E3 predictions?
Smash Bros. details, a bunch of info on Yoshi before they announce it will release shortly after E3. Metroid Prime 4 gameplay. Possibly info on Pokemon. I am hoping for an Animal Crossing announcement, or if not that, finally setting a release date for Pikmin 4.
- In what ways do you think the Switch could be improved?
Make the eshop way easier to navigate. Having to browse through a ton of shovelware without many sort options, especially with weekly updates, is a nightmare. Wasn't bad the first month or so, but now it's crazy. I don't do online multiplayer so I don't care about that but for those that do it'd be nice if they got their act together and just implemented basic voice chat and online play functions that Sony and Microsoft understand. I feel bad for Splatoon players who have to use that stupid device to hook up to their phone just to chat. Other than that it's just fine to me - maybe figure out a way to take save data off the system in case the Switch itself gets damaged, but I'm very happy with where it's at. Oh - allow video capture for ALL titles. I do not understand why I can't take video even in big titles like Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
-
I'm glad someone like Splatoon as much as me. That game is fun as shit.
- What games are you most looking forward to this year?
1. smash
2. Metroid 4
- What are you favorite/least favorite Switch titles?
Favorites:
1. Breath of the wild of course. That game is tits
2. Splatoon 2- sooo much fun and very addictive
3. skyrim - I can't believe I put 50 hours in to a game I already played multiple times, but its great on the switch
4. xenoblade 2- awesome game
5. Mr. shifty - cheap and fun
6. Celeste- very fun
7. Sonic mania - just like the old ones
8. Tumbleweed park - fun and quirky
Least favorite
1. Sorry to all the odyssey lovers, but that was the first disappointing mario game I ever played and I've passionately played all of them going all the way back to 1987. I beat it in a day and a half effortlessly and mindlessly collecting excessive moons is boring as shit to me. Its mundane banality does nothing for me. And playing it after finishing the elegant, robust and expansive breath of the wild wasn't doing it any favors either. It was like going from filet mignon to ramen noodles.
2. Mariod kart 8 is an awesome game. I will be upfront about that, but Its just not for me. I got bored.
3. Doom- I probably would like it better on the other systems. the visual compromise is too much.
- E3 predictions?
1. I'm hoping for virtual console
2. I would love to see a new F-zero
- In what ways do you think the Switch could be improved?
1. I want full virtual console and I am talking NES all the way up to gamecube support. Its money that is just burning a hole in my pocket ready to go to nintendo. I would buy so much shit
-
^^ Wow, that's a shame you didn't enjoy Mario Odyssey. For me it's the best 3D Mario since 64, and possibly ever: Sunshine was good but had way too many problems, and I think the Galaxy games are awful. But it's interesting to see how opinions vary.
I would do terrible things for a new F-Zero or even just F-Zero GX HD. A very small part of me thinks that maybe they're finally cooking something up for the Switch but I've come to accept that F-Zero is simply a dead franchise...
-
I'm definitely gonna get a Switch in a few years when the system is reaching the end of it's life cycle so I can get everything cheaper. Really looking forward to playing Breath of the Wild, Mario Oddissey, and Metroid fucking Prime 4, and maybe the Dark Souls remaster and the other Souls game, the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy thing :metal
I think the Galaxy games are awful.
I'm sending you harsh noise for the rest of your roulette :P
-

I'm sending you harsh noise for the rest of your roulette :P
You and Puppies will fight for last place :metal
I forgot Crash Bandicoot Trilogy. I want that!
-
Oh crap, I forgot about the Crash bandicoot trilogy as well. That's a day one purchase for sure
-
Only had mine for a few weeks, but one thing I'm surprised it's lacking is apps - the most obvious being Netflix.
-
Only had mine for a few weeks, but one thing I'm surprised it's lacking is apps - the most obvious being Netflix.
Yeah, but Netflix's selection is superbad these days, so not a big loss :lol I personally don't care about apps on my consoles but for those who do I hope they at least get Netflix again soon. They have Hulu but that's about it. Since I usually game with my laptop on the coffee table in front of me it's not a problem personally...
Still playing lots of Fire Emblem Warriors - this game is a lot easier to complete than Hyrule Warriors. On that game I think I clocked over 250 hours on the Wii U version and didn't even finish half of the first of five adventure maps; in FE I'm 70 hours in and have 3 of the available 5 adventure maps cleared. Thank god. Hope they fix that in the Switch version of HW.
Also Kirby is still a blast. Short as hell, I damn near beat it in a weekend, but charming and lovely to look at with some fun minigames.
-
Yeah, but Netflix's selection is superbad these days, so not a big loss :lol
Dude, that is the truth. I worked night shift the other night and spent a good 30 mins looking for something to watch. And they had the balls to take away Archer from me just as I was getting into it. Netflix, you be slippin

That's actually one of the few good things they've done recently :hat

Well, hot damn. Wolfenstein 2 looks pretty damn good on switch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaOeobw833A
I'll probably pick that up when released and also dark souls
-
A few things:
I highly recommend a cute little game I just bought the other day called PAN-PAN a tiny-big adventure. I'm pretty sure it's like 5 or 6 dollars. It's a neat little puzzle game. Feels like it might be a little overwhelming at first but you eventually find your way. I played through it twice now.
Also, Wolfenstein II looks awesome. I definitely want to check it out. I might as well do it on the Switch.
-
Bought World of Goo a few nights ago. I never got far in the PC version so it's nice to have it again on Switch (and using my gold points I only paid $5 for it, so that's cool). However, I don't understand why the only control options are to play in tablet mode with the Joy-Cons connected, or play using a single Joy-Con. Oh well. Still it's really fun, I love these 'easy to understand, difficult to master' physics games.
Now if they'd get Crayon Physics Deluxe I'd be set...
-
World of Goo, that's a game I have not played in a long time.
-
I've never played World of Goo, maybe I should add it to the list.
I bought Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, and damn, this game is such fun! It's arguably my favorite Mario title on the Switch so far. I've never once played a strategy game so I was hesitant to buy this. After hearing such good reviews I decided to get it and I haven't put it down since.
-
Also, don't know if anyone has heard, but Dark Souls Remastered is delayed until "Summer 2018" for the Switch. Doesn't seem to affect the other consoles.

More time for Donkey Kong and Zelda for me
Glad you're enjoying Mario + Rabbids, Bizkit. It's so fun! I still have a lot of post-game challenge maps to do, there are some really crazy ones that I have yet to figure out. I tend to use Rabbid Yoshi and Yoshi as my teammates although early on I used Rabbid Luigi and Rabbid Peach a lot. Never really used Peach or Luigi themselves much, but they're not bad.
World of Goo is really fun but frustrating. I'm never really sure I'm using the intended strategy to beat levels and sometimes it becomes tedious, and when the whole structure collapses it kind of sucks the fun out. But I'm plugging along and the various types of goo and strategies involved are pretty inventive.

Yeah I can't wait for DKC! I never had a WiiU so I never had the chance to play it. What's your friend code, by the way?
And yeah, I don't have every single character unlocked yet, I'm on the last world, but my "dream team" tends to be Mario, Rabbid Peach and Luigi. Luigi is an offensive mastermind, but I have to be careful because of his health :lol
I like fun, but frustrating games
-
My friend code is SW-4250-9730-4436 (Why, Nintendo? Why do you still use these?). I'm not an online or multiplayer gamer unfortunately outside of Smash Bros. but you'll be able to see my Zelda hours and get a feel for my sheer adoration for that game and franchise :lol
-
Sweet, I'll add you. Yeah I'm just curious to see the hours. I like that kinda stuff. An I have no idea, I feel like I'm giving someone my social/credit card number when I do that. :lol
And yeah, I'm more of a single player guy but let's be honest, the online for the Switch is pretty terrible right now. I can't believe you have to use an app to communicate with people on Splatoon 2. But yeah, I'm hoping whenever they roll out their online service, they have some sort of communication system.
And for anyone that wants to add, my friend code is:
SW (Steven Wilson) - 5217-6838-1691
725 hours?!?! Jesus Christ :lol
-
So far I've played Super Mario Odyssey (great) and Fe (indie exploration platformer thingy, was okay I guess)
Nothing else so far though, c'mon, release more games for me Nintendo ahah
Also hi bizkit
-
Hey Parama! It's been a while.
It's funny though, I've had the opposite issue. I feel like there are too many games that I can get around to!
-
Yeah, 2017 was the Year of the Wild. I can almost guarantee there are more hours than that though, since Disgaea 5 is missing about 10 going by the in-game clock. :lol I'm so burnt out on it now though that I can't see myself getting a third playthrough in for a long time, probably not even until next year.
Their online infrastructure is terrible. I wish they'd announce something about classic games coming. I know it's becoming kind of a huge burden for game companies in the modern age to spend so much time and money and energy on rehashing their classic catalogue over and over and over but that should be the next big hurdle for the industry to tackle, getting all generations (or as many as possible, and going forward) to run smoothly together. We've sent probes out of the damn solar system and can calculate the difference in trajectory if a space ant farts on a comet so we should be able to fix that, right?
There are still no less than 12 games I want for the Switch, and I still have things to take care of in the games I own. I vowed not to buy anything until I fully beat each game but with games like Disgaea and Xenoblade I'd be playing them until the next console comes out, and I still like replaying SNES games on top of that, so... :lol
-
Hey Parama! It's been a while.
It's funny though, I've had the opposite issue. I feel like there are too many games that I can get around to!
I have way too many games on steam/buy most of my games there
-
Even though it's a remake (which the Switch seems a haven for), I'm absolutely ecstatic to get to play through The World Ends With You again and in an updated format.
-
Added you back, BIZ!
I would like to play TWEWY when it comes out, not sure about dropping full price on it though. I never got to play it on the DS when I had mine (several, over many years... really should have kept my last one).
-
I finally got Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze! Never got to play it when I had my Wii U so this is awesome. I'm gonna spend as much of today with it as I can. I played a few levels last night and omg it's so fun
-
I thought about getting Donkey Kong but wasn’t sure. Maybe I should get it...I might wait and get Hyrules Warriors as well since it’s coming out in 2 weeks.
-
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate coming at the end of August. Finally. I picked up Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the Wii U on a whim, and it was one of the best franchise discoveries I've made in a very long time, so I'm happy the Switch is finally getting a MH game in English.
I was already gonna get Monster Hunter World once it comes to PC this fall so this is even better. Monster Hunter autumn for me.
EDIT: Did anybody send me a friend request? I have a random request from someone but I don't know who they are and have no idea where they could've found my code, unless maybe they messed up adding someone else.
-

I'm on world 5 right now, and I think you should get it, at least if you have a history of enjoying platformers (especially Nintendo platformers). The graphics are absolutely stunning, the soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in a game in many years (not just orchestral or ambience, they're actually catchy and well written tunes like in the good old days - same composer as the original Donkey Kong Country, too). It's very fun and has tons of secrets.
But, I also love Hyrule Warriors, and sunk a couple hundred hours into the Wii U version (and the 3DS one). I'll buy it a third time, too. I think both are amazing games, but it depends on which you will enjoy more: a challenging platformer that will sometimes try your patience, or an addictive but extremely repetitive hack-and-slash that has hundreds of hours of content but risks burning you out early on. Hyrule Warriors also has (if they haven't updated the Switch version) some very annoying level requirements in order to get the rewards - you could spend 30+ minutes on a mission only to lose everything by accidentally taking a single hit. Fire Emblem Warriors is far more forgiving in that regard.
-
Working on 100% in Donkey Kong - almost there. Just two worlds to go.
Thinking about buying N++. It's going to happen - it just came out yesterday - but I'm going to take a nap first, and then I'll decide if I'm going to get it tonight or tomorrow :P
-
Castlevania bloodstained: curse of the moon is awesome
(https://twinfinite.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Bloodstained-Curse-of-the-Moon-Zangetsu.jpg)
Basically a new retro game just like castlevania
-
That game looks killer, and it's only $10! I may pick it up. :)
N++ is one of the best games on the Switch, if anyone's into platforming like I am. Amazing stuff.
My best friend just sold his Xbox One and is getting a Switch and just pre-ordered Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu, so I'm gonna get the Eevee version. Everything about these games have both of us hyped as hell, other than apparently no battles with wild Pokemon, just the Pokemon Go Safari Zone-style fighting. That's okay I guess, as long as I get to continue fighting other trainers and progress through the gyms just like the original games. Tossing the Joy-Cons like a Pokeball is what I've been dreaming of. This is gonna rule.
-
I am definitely digging it.
I also just got Street fighter anniversary edition. Its got all the games, like all the versions of 2, and it has 1 and it has 3 and all the alpha games. Its quite the robust package. me likey
-

I've read in some places that's just one of the games and there's a more traditional core game in the works for 2019.

Yeah, thankfully. It's nice that they're sort of pandering to the original old school crowd with those, and still continuing with the normal traditional releases. The franchise will never go away, haha.
-
I like how updates automatically download - came home a few nights ago and had the Donkey Kong DLC for Mario + Rabbids ready to go. Good stuff, very polished and makes the cost of the DLC more worth it than ever before. Might try to push through the whole thing tonight.
Got back into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in a big way. There's still so much to do and I'm almost 180 hours in. Good lord.
Octopath Traveler demo: great stuff, but a couple characters bored me silly in their first arcs (being tired didn't help either). Some characters have annoying speech tendencies, and some of the plot points are generic as all get out, but I still have no idea what the overall plot will be so I'm hoping it gets really Final Fantasy-ish by endgame. The large battle sprites for boss enemies are so cool and I can't wait to see what kind of monsters are in store for later in the game.
-
Crash bandicoot comes out friday
-
Crash bandicoot comes out friday
Have you picked this up? I haven't had time nor money to get it but I want it. Same with Octopath.
I beat the Mario + Rabbids DK Adventure DLC last night by complete luck (final boss battle is cheap and the one subpar thing about the DLC). Extremely fun stuff that very clearly was a work of love, every bit as quality as the main game.
Waiting patiently for Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate.
-
Yeah. I picked up, played it for a couple days and then put it down. Didn't hold my attention as much as back in 98 unfortunately. Very well made though
-
Picked up Hollow Knight last week and man is this game beautiful. It's my first metroidvania type game but from what I've been told it's one of the better ones.
-
Hollow Knight is fantastic and also huuuuge & they keep making it bigger too (another free DLC coming in about a month...)
I am gonna pick it up on switch when that DLC releases, already have had it on PC but haven't llayedbsince before they started releasing DLC
-
Finished up Hollow Knight and it was definitely one of the best games I've ever played. I've dumped nearly 50 hours into it and I only have a few side bosses and the "true" boss to beat but I did get the first ending already. I'm at 105% completion and I just want more. Can't wait for the new DLC.
-
So the FINALLY announced a release date for Dark souls. Its in October.
I was really hoping for a summer release but whatever. Never played the game, but heard a lot about it.
-
Got hollow knight for switch. its decent and I love the art style

-
Is it as good as everyone says it is? I'm twiddling my thumbs wondering if I should buy it before ProgPower...
-
I'm only about an hour in, but so far so good. For anyone that is a fan of metroidvania, it will probably satisfy. What separates it from the rest for me is its darkly charming and quirky aesthetic. Its got this dark, fairy tale, yet heart warming theme going on which is what drew me to it and the atmosphere it creates is worth the price of admission (15 bucks) in my opinion.
-
One of those nintendo direct things was today.
I guess the biggest thing from it was the official info about the online service which launches next week. 20 bucks for the year to play games multiplayer online and you can to play nes games. They will begin with a select set of games and then will be adding to it over time. Cool I guess, but I have been done with NES games for a while now. I would have liked to see at least SNES games as well. What I really want is gamecube games, but whatever.
Another thing they announced was a whole bunch of Final fantasy ports. 7, 9, 10 and 12 zodiac age. And 15 pocket edition all coming to switch. damn
-

WHOA WHAT I MISSED THIS HOLY CRAP
*hops on over to YouTube to watch*
-
YO. I was hyped for that but Isabelle in Smash and Animal Crossing (finally) confirmed for Switch next year has me over the moon. I don't even feel bad about trading in Kirby today now :lol
-
On top of that:
Luigi's mansion 3 looks pretty cool. Totally missed the first one, so I might check this out
Might check out super mario bros U deluxe just for the hell of it
That beat em up collection that has final fight in it I will probably pick up since I've always wanted to play final fight
I'll buy FFVII on principle alone (its my favorite game ever made) and if the graphics come pretty close to the PS4 version, I may pick up XII zodiac age. Always wanted to get further in 12 than I did
I already played the crap out of diablo 3, but its cool that its coming to switch
-
At this rate I'm gonna be selling the rest of my gaming rig because the Switch has everything I want. Holy fark. What a lineup.
Still all about that Yoshi game, too.
-
Another thing they announced was a whole bunch of Final fantasy ports. 7, 9, 10 and 12 zodiac age. And 15 pocket edition all coming to switch. damn
Earlier this week there was an announcement for a remaster of Crystal Chronicles due to come out on Switch and PS4, as well.
-
Jesus effing christ I LOVE THE SWITCH. I am going to be playing the hell out of it for the next five years just for the games they announced at the Direct, let alone games that were already coming out and have yet to be announced.
Awesome. So freaking awesome.
-
Anyone else get Switch Online? Couldn't resist for $20 to play Mario 3 on the go. Hopefully they continue to add great NES games and maybe even eventually SNES and N64 games.
-
I'll get it when they add SNES or newer games.
-
What games are available for it?
-
I had a much more vitriolic post written up, but :lol I'll just say I'm super disappointed in Nintendo's online model for the Switch for a number of reasons. The price is good but shit, you get what you pay for - I have zero interest in playing more NES games, let alone online, in 2018 when there are a ton of games just for the Switch that I want to spend my time on. I may get it for Smash - MAYBE - if reports are the online play is good and lag-free unlike the Wii and Wii U experiences I had. But until they allow local backups for save data, and allow online cloud saving for ALL games (even Pokemon Let's Go won't be allowed to save to the cloud - WTF), I'm not buying.
Nintendo's corporate structure and culture is so far behind the times - I'm 95% positive that's why their online model is so ridiculed currently. They really need to get with it.
-
I have been playing the Dark Souls Demo for the switch. Its pretty cool and I will buy it when its formally released. Works great
-
Bit the bullet this morning and bought Hollow Knight, I figured $15 is an awesome deal for such a slick looking game. Hope it's fun, I've been sick all week but hopefully I get to play it tonight. Also tried the Mega Man 11 demo, seems really fun.
-
Bought Stick of Truth last night, even though I bought it last year on PC for $7.50. I paid $30 for the Switch version but honestly it's worth it since it's the Switch and I'll be able to take it with me on a work trip this week. First time I played through as the Jew class but this time I'm doing Fighter. Trying to use different buddies too instead of relying on Butters the entire game, but Butters just makes it so much easier. I like that the game isn't difficult at all but it makes it hard to want to use Princess Kenny when I could just be wailing on everyone. Maybe that'll change if I use a Mage or a Thief next...
-
Heading out to buy a physical copy of Octopath Traveler. Finally!
-
Someone figured out that the new Smash Bros. trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3aZSpGwDJ4) uncannily syncs up with Queen's Don't Stop Me Now. :lol

Just purchased Smash and its now pre-downloaded and ready to go. So now its just a matter of time.

For anyone looking for a more usable D-pad for the switch I recommend this
(https://i.pinimg.com/564x/41/4d/4e/414d4e2f41e6f39eca0fb438ed7c9a90.jpg)
HORI D-pad controller. I definitely prefer it over the original joycon
-
I’ve been Switch-less for almost a year now.
-
Finally playing Trial of Mana officially is great. I only got so far on the Emulator I had and got tired of playing one the keyboard. Amazingly almost done. Though it has good multiplayer value.
Might just play Secret of Mana with my friends when we chill make it a game we play together would be fun.
-
I'm always skeptical about HORI stuff but that does look cool.
I've been playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate religiously. When I get fed up with it I switch over to the NES games and play Wario's Woods obsessively but I'm pretty sure I'll never get past the wall (level 85 on A game, level 75 on B game) - it just gets too difficult with only 1 free line of space at that point.
Monster Hunter is worth every penny and I got it half off, hundreds of hours can come out of that game.
I want to get the Mana games but I may actually just wait to get the full 3D remake of Trials of Mana when it comes later. I never got into the originals because of the co-op aspect.
-
Mario Maker 2 just came out. Anybody thinking about getting it?
I want it, but probably will wait until it comes down in price a little

I do want it, but I'll have to settle for watching videos for a while. It looks really fun though.

I was gonna get it, then saw some garbage levels and charged my mind lol but I’ll probsbly get it in a week or so

Switch Lite announced
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2019/7/10/20687801/nintendo-switch-lite-price-release-date-size-battery-life-motion-control-games
(https://cms.kotaku.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/fs5ndqndbc5xjqaehrlo.png)
$199 price point.
Dedicated D-pad
No joy cons
Can't be docked
I already have a switch so I'll keep using what I have. Not sure what I think of the lite yet, but it definitely is nice to have the d-pad
-
That's pretty nice and a great entry point for people but jesus that yellow is a terrible color. The other two colors aren't as bad
-
It's a pretty good option for kids, I think, or someone who doesn't have a Switch or is primarily a 3DS player but wants to move on and start playing the Switch because the 3DS is unofficially dead now. Or even for someone who has a Switch and just wants a second more portable one for travel, since apparently it can communicate and trade data with original Switches. I won't get it but it's neat, and perhaps next year the Pro model will come out. I also like how everything is a single unit like an older handheld with no detachables, and there's a legit D-pad on there.
-
For me it is interesting. I am not sure I think the Switch's current release schedule is worth the price of the normal Switch for me, but a budget model seems cool. Because I didn't have a WiiU and almost never played on one, those WiiU ports + the Switch games (and + the announced titles) are probably enough for me to take the dive. I bought a cheap 3DS a year back or so and enjoy having it. The Switch lite seems a bit like the successor to the PSP to me (games that are more like full console games), which I preferred back in the day. A better battery life and a better screen seem nice as well (which reports are saying).
I do hope the build quality is higher than the joy-cons, because I know plenty of people with a Switch and a lot are having problems (specifically joystick drifting, which apparently has a high chance of occurring in any joycon over time due to how they are built).

Honestly, the battery life is barely better than the original model. Literally the range is only about 30-45 minutes more depending on what you're playing, and the screen might have slightly sharper visuals, but it's smaller than the original Switch. The joy-con drift problem is real although I think the fanbase exaggerates just how bad it is. My Switch (got it at midnight on launch, mind) didn't develop the Joy-Con drift until the system had logged over 900 hours of gameplay, and only occasionally drifts now, but is still a completely viable controller (not as good as the Pro Controller though), and I'm not certain on this but I read that Nintendo was addressing the Joy-Con drift in newer runs of the console, because the problem is caused by a ribbon that gets worn down and eventually improperly reads the input.
Just a heads up for your own sake; if you think $100 off is worth a slightly smaller but slightly sharper screen and a small battery performance, go for it.

Oh, I know, the battery is reportedly 20% better or something like that. The screen remains to be seen, as someone who takes 4-5 hour trips by train frequently that little bit extra comes in handy. But I will say I have no issue with the current Switch screen and I am not expecting anything major offcourse.
Over here it is 130 euros cheaper btw (which is almost 150 US dollars). For me it comes to how much worth playing on the tv is, probably not 147 dollars. Local MP on my tv with friends that can actually game has become a once or twice a year event and I am fine with playing on my classic systems in that regard.
As for the joycon drifting issue, it is likely due to the sticks wearing on the surface pads below it. I have watched several videos of tears downs, because I like seeing how these devices are made (my dad had a major in electronics, so we used to mess around with broken devices and repair them). The joycons are apparently easy to fix, just replace the analog stick unit and you are done. But for the handheld I doubt this will be the case, which is why it is potentially a major issue for me for at least the lite model.
As for the occurrence, probably bad luck, but two housemates own a Switch for less than a year and have this problem already. One of my friends as well. So in this case I take the internet complaining serious. Plus other issues like connection failures (when clicking them on the unit) and bluetooth issues (we live in an environment with a whole lot of signals). For a device I plan on using reliably at least more than six years (hell, my lauch PSP and launch DS both work like a charm still), so many people having issues in only two years is a sign for me personally to wait it out for a bit. Playing two years intensively and it starting to show issues for me personally is not a good sign. I have abused many controllers, some decades old now, and the last one that gave me issues was the N64, which had that terrible limp analog stick almost everyone from that time remembers.
-
That's pretty cool, but the whole appeal of the Switch for me is it's dual functionality as a handheld and a home console!
If I decide to buy a Switch, I will definitely get the regular version.
-
I must be lucky. The drift is the only issue I've ever encountered with my Switch. No warping or bulging or scratched screens, and never an issue with clicking them into the rails on the side of the tablet proper. It sucks that people have had issues with their Switches :( I got the drift about 9 months after I got it. If it's any consolation, the Joy-Con analog stick is still stiff as hell. I've logged over 2500 hours into my Switch now I think, and it isn't loose at all. So hopefully the Switch Lite has some different parts in there to avoid the drift :)
-
So does this mean that Nintendo is doing away with the DS line?
-
So does this mean that Nintendo is doing away with the DS line?
They haven't officially put the nail in the coffin, but there's only been 3 3DS games released this year, if I recall correctly. It's on life support right now, especially now that Pokemon has finally made the jump to the Switch.
-
The 3DS is surely dead now. Yokai Watch 3 and Persona Q2 are near impossible to find, no retailer here had them, just two webshops for a very brief window. And this means Nintendo will go full force for the Switch, no more 3DS exclusives or ports/remakes of classic games like last year. These developments efforts will now hopefully go to the Switch. Initially it was their planning to keep the 3DS alive in the form of the very cheap 2DS and support it as a second pillar. But a cheaper Switch model seems a good approach. In a couple of years, this thing will likely cost less than 150 euros, meaning a whole lot more people will join the fun.

Well, it is not like they can't play any games, as you said. But I just wonder how this issue will evolve over many years of use (if at all) and there are certain types of games where it seems like it could be bothersome. I just don't want that when buying a new 200 euro device. As for the regular Switch, you can always decide to replace a joycon down the line or repair it (apparently quite easily and fairly cheap).
And yeah, the N64 controller was offcourse an anomally, but that was understandable because it was the very early days of joysticks on controllers. I don't expect any controller these days to become "loose".
-
Hmmm, if I buy a Switch this or the coming year, it seems like I will actually go for the newer regular model, it has a significantly improved battery. And that for me is a big plus. Hopefully some good sales around black Friday or something, because I still think 330 euros is too much.
And in regards to the drifting issue, a law firm is doing an investigation if there is potential for class action. https://chimicles.com/nintendo-switch-joy-con-drift-class-action-investigation/ (https://chimicles.com/nintendo-switch-joy-con-drift-class-action-investigation/). Kotaku recently published an article that a quarter of their staff is having issues as well and it seems gaming media is reporting on the issue more. I hope at the very least Nintendo does a quiet revision, replacing the material underneath the sticks to prevent loose particles that influence how analog stick movement is registered.

Super nintendo games now available for switch online. FINALLY :metal

Dude... I do too. That looks awesome. I would play the hell out of this.
I've been playing Super Mario World 1 + 2 on the Switch the last couple nights and I am just so happy I have those on the console finally. I've been waiting so long. Can't wait for the games they'll add over time. Omg.

I'm glad they are available as well. I've been going back and forth between Super Mario world, F-Zero, Super Metroid, and Zelda 3.
I've played my switch more in the past couple days then I have in the past year. So happy the SNES games are available. They hold up really well.

Far-off hopes are Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger. CT wasn't on the SNES classic but SMRPG was and I reeeeeally want to play that (not on an emulator this time). Or any of the old-school Final Fantasies. A man can dream. Maybe they'll release Street Fighter II at some point after they're not afraid of it competing with the Street Fighter Collection sales, idk. They have dozens and dozens of ultra high quality classics to pick from.
-
It would be sweet to see CT as well as the FF series. Personally I would love to see Earthbound as I have almost no experience with it.
One thing I will say is I hope we don't have to wait an entire year again to get the next console available to Switch online. Whether its N64, genesis, Gamecube or whatever, lets get this stuff out sooner.
I know we will probably never get virtual console again, but its their loss. I probably would have spent loads of cash already if they had a robust offering. So far I have only given them 20 bucks for the year subscription, but what ever nintendo. You do you.
-
I wonder if they'll even release an N64 Online service. I heard they're bringing/brought Doom 64 to the console but it's a standalone purchase. That seems to make more sense to me because it seems like a lot of work to translate N64 games to the Switch particularly with the controls.
-
just got links awakening
so far, its awesome. Controls feel good. Graphics are fantastic and almost surreal. Last time I played this game was the DX version on the game boy color back in 99, lol

Ahhh I want it so much. Link's Awakening is one of my favorite games ever. I'll pick it up soon - too busy going through the SNES games for the millionth time, lol

My friend at work has been talking about getting a switch. I am gonna see if he wants to buy mine and then if he does, I think I am gonna get a switch Lite
I like the dedicated D-pad and I think it will fit better in my hand.
-
Well, my friend is giving a 100 for my old switch and I got the new one. The lite version is SOOOO much better, at least for me.
I think only once did I ever use the original in docked mode. It was always handheld and the lite fits sooo much better in my hand and feels way more sturdy. The battery life is little better as well, and its so damn nice having a dedicated D-pad.
My only nitpick is the grey is a little dull. I wish there would have been a strait black option, with black buttons. since I'm not interested in the other two colors, but besides that I love it.

-
The lite looks pretty cool. I loved the psp (and vita, hardwarewise) back in the day and in a way this feels like a successor to those, a true console-like handheld.
As for myself, I am playing more docked than I anticipated (and played more Smash with friends than I anticipated), so am glad I got the original model (not that I had any say in that, I got it as an awesome gift). As I said in the other thread, I traded it in for the new model and the battery life is awesome. I am travelling a bit more than usual these days and now I have zero worries about running out.
I also bought a pro controller. The d-pad fucking sucks but the rest of the controller is simply fantastic. I love how it feels. I am thinking of ordering one of those SNES controllers for the SNES online games (which makes Switch Online totally worth it for me).
-
It's all about battery life for me. Till they come out with another new Switch that further improves the quality of it, the one they released that has more battery life is a no brainer for me. The Lite would've been a must buy for me had they included the new battery improvements.
-
IMO the d-pad on the pro controller is perfect. That thing is awesome for SNES online :)
-
Honestly, as far a battery life goes. The Lite has been excellent. I played for a good 5 hours yesterday with no issue

Can you play multiplayer retro games with a friend if they have it on their switch?
-
Haven't followed the online thing that much, but does Nintendo add new nes/snes games every month or...?
Can you play multiplayer retro games with a friend if they have it on their switch?
Yes you can, straight out of the box even, as a single joycon can be used for nes/snes.
IMO the d-pad on the pro controller is perfect. That thing is awesome for SNES online :)
Due to the sensitivity every now and then it picks up a signal in a different direction. It is believed to be common but most people will probably think they made slight mistake every now and then. You can try it out in the button calibration menu, just mash one direction quickly and sometimes a different input comes up (see article/vid below). It was reported on by major sites and unfortunately rings true for me as well.
Will try out my housemates pro's to see if they have it as well. If there is a difference I will probably contact Nintendo...
But in the end I am not really a d-pad guy (outside of the snes controller, which has a nice big one centered where the finger rests), so it isn't the end of the world for me. For selections and most purposes, the d-pad works fine for me. Even on SNES games from what I played, but there is the odd chance that there is a wrong input at one of those split second moments in 2d action games. It is super joticable on Tetris though, on my d-pad.
https://kotaku.com/how-to-fix-your-switch-pro-controller-s-d-pad-1827325012 (https://kotaku.com/how-to-fix-your-switch-pro-controller-s-d-pad-1827325012)
This is how it looks when I test it (not my vid):
https://youtu.be/haufgEirH18 (https://youtu.be/haufgEirH18)
On a sidenote, I actually like the seperate buttons on the left joycon as a "d-pad". I think it feels pretty good for a lot of 2d games.

Can you play multiplayer retro games with a friend if they have it on their switch?
Yeah, but you both need a Switch and a sub to the online service, I believe. Then you can access the multiplayer function within the SNES Online app on the Switch.

So if I had a switch at my house, and a buddy had one at his, we could play Contra or Bubble Bobble together over the internet? Or is it for SNES games only?

Yes, nes can be played online! I think this applies to all games that have mp.
-
Yeah, NES and SNES both have online functionality. You should be able to play them online, at two different houses :)
-
Whoa. I didn't know that was a thing. That's incredible.
-
Whoa. I didn't know that was a thing. That's incredible.
Yeah, I'd say at this point Switch online is absolutely worth it. You can also download the entire library to your switch and play them on the go without internet connectivity. And just the whole design and functionality of the NES and SNES apps is really well done.
I reaaally hope they will do a gameboy app too in the future.
-
Is it the entire library of NES and SNES games? Any region locking?
-

The Switch is the first Nintendo system that is not region locked, so you shouldn't have problems there, I don't think.

Personally, I've put 50+ hours into the NES Online *just* because of Wario's Woods, and Dr. Mario. Also played a lot of Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. 1-3 and a whole lot of NES Open Tournament Golf.
SNES, I've already 100%ed Super Mario World, almost 100%ed Super Mario World 2, and playing through Breath of Fire and A Link To The Past again right now. Sooooo nice not having to resort to emulation for these games for the first time in 2 decades. They play wonderfully.
-
I would be more excited about the SNES games if I didn't get the SNES classic 2 years ago. It is nice to have all the games on the same console.
And the Switch Lite looks pretty cool. I considered getting one but it's not ideal for me because 90% of the times I play, I use the docked mode. I only play handheld when I'm travelling, which only happens 2-3 times a year.
-
Not exactly a NES expert, but are there significant (first party) titles still missing?
As for the SNES, I hope to see the Donkey Kong Country series. Really enjoyed the first one on the SNES classic (though I am horrible at it), but would like having the second and third games.
-
I dunno about significant first party games but I know Final Fantasies 1-3 are not available. The Donkey Kong Country games and Street Fighter II (and its variants) aren't on the SNES either but I hope eventually they are (Donkey Kong is available through the Arcade Archives which I also purchased, and it's slightly different, so I do expect Street Fighter II to show up eventually despite being in the Street Fighter collection that's for sale). I would also like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time, and Kirby Super Star.
First DKC game is probably a top 10 all-time game for me... play that every year.
-
For anyone that likes Final Fantasy games, they are discounted on the switch online store at the moment. and that includes 7, 9, 10 and 12
I picked up 7 and 12 (Zodiac age)
-
I think I will buy FFVII, but am also contemplating buying the Asian physical edition that has both VII and VIII on a single cartridge with an English language option.

Yeah, it is a great game and really enjoy the look of classic DKC. But I am sooo bad at it, had to use save states (my rule is only to use them between levels). As the sequels aren't on the classic, I really hope to play them on the Switch in the future.
-
Since I'm currently not in a position to drop $60+tax on a game, I've been looking at the really cheap offerings on the Switch. Last week I bought the original Doom for $5 and it's still fun to play even as dated as that game is (eventually I want all the Dooms on my Switch, so I've got a lot to look forward to). The other night I bought Crypt of the Necrodancer for about $3. Really fun so far but I'm playing that one in small bursts which seems to be optimal for me.
I reeeeeally want Lapis x Labyrinth.
-
Since getting the Lite, I broke out Xenoblade chronicles 2 for the first time in a long time. It always looked cruddy on handheld mode so I kinda lost interest. I may be mental, but it looks much better on the slightly smaller screen of the lite.
Happy to be back in it and can't wait for the remastered version of Xenoblade chronicles 1

Oooh that's great to hear. I almost exclusively play docked mode but XC2 did not look so good handheld. I'm excited 1 is coming to the Switch so I can finally play it - it looks fantastic visually. I will have to get Torna before it comes out and finally play that too.
-
Yeah, a smaller screen can help quite a bit. I find the og 3DS to be of much better iq compared to the XL models with a larger screen, for example.
Similarly, the the Switch docked looks a lot better on my old, smaller lcd than our modern bigass 4k screen.

Posting this here 'cause it's an old game, a niche game, on the Switch, and I don't want to detract from the Red Dead hype in the general game thread. Last Remnant rant/rambling.
So I recently bought The Last Remnant on Switch. This is the fourth time I've bought this game. It's been years since I've played it so I'm quite rusty on my in-depth knowledge of the game but in general I know enough to get through.
The game levels enemies by scaling them to your level, which is called a 'battle rank.' The game has an interesting stat gain and leveling mechanic in battle ranks. Basically, go big or go home; high risk, high reward is the name of the game here. You can activate this ability called 'timeshift' on the overworld and when you get close to an enemy, it lights up red. Any enemies you 'link' this way before the timeshift ends, you can hit the R trigger to 'link' all the enemies into a single battle. Each enemy on the overworld can bring anywhere from 1-3 (maybe 4, not sure if they changed this) 'unions' into battle. So, you can engage a single enemy on the overworld but it might bring 1-3 'unions' into battle, each consisting of 1-4 enemies in each union. Get it? The stronger the enemies you fight, the lower your unions' morale going into battle, the greater your stat gains at the end of battle. I've seen units get 5 stat upgrades + 2 skills all from one battle.
The goal for most people is to keep your Battle Rank low, because enemies will quickly become super powerful, and if you keep your rank low while grinding properly you can get massive stat and skill gains which will help you roll over enemies instead of the other way around.
So I was half-properly grinding in this remaster. I was linking a bunch of monsters, but not the strongest ones in the areas, so while I was slowly gaining BR, I was only gaining moderate stat gains, and the enemies were scaling a bit more quickly than me. I had to spend all day grinding yesterday in the area before the halfway-through-the-game mark, just to tackle one of the most infuriating boss fights I've ever experienced, The Gates of Hell (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/lastremnant/images/a/ae/TheGatesOfHell.png/revision/latest?cb=20090702182255). This bastard will attack on its own 2-3 times per turn, then get another attack every time a union attacks him. If you're using 4 unions like most people do, this amounts to 6-7 attacks - AOE attacks - per turn. AND he can immediately enthrall your KO'd unions, making them fight for him, which basically means if they even touch your living unions, you're plummeting to a game over the next turn or 2.
But I did it, god damn it. I corrected my grinding mistakes and powered up so much he didn't even come close to killing me once. Now I've reached the back half of the game where it gets REALLY open and fun, and my units are powerful enough to make looking for my endgame roster easy.
The only serious downside here is that I sped through the first half and missed a bunch of permanently missable sidequests which I'll have to save for New Game +.
This game is absolutely infuriating but I LOVE the depth of the combat and stat systems and linking/chaining enemies together and how the more you do it the more you get rewarded. But oh my god, I can't think of a single other game that is so heavily flawed, so rage inducing, and yet I can't quit playing it.

Damn, four times?! My record is MGS3 three times and that is my favourite game of all time probably.
I don't really know much about this game, I recall teenage me being salty that the 360 got exclusive JRPG's, because I bought a PS3 due to the PS2 having many of them (which turned out well, because I lost interest in the genre for a period then). How is the story in Last Remnant?
-
Unfortunately the story is one of the weaker aspects of The Last Remnant. Like, the worldbuilding it has is kinda cool and the races and cities all feel distinct and real and it's all got a lot of thought put into it but unfortunately the story itself just kinda... sucks. I think it has some really cool moments and the cinematics are a delight to watch when there's action involved but yeah. The game is so painfully obviously marketed to a western or even distinctly American audience, right down to some of the core characters, that it's cringe-inducing.
The meat of TLR is in its battle system and character/stat/skill management, but the game does such a horrible job at explaining what few mechanics it actually DOES explain, that it's hard to recommend it to anybody. It's a cult game and the few people who really sink their teeth into it still have to fight off frustrations and dive through a million spreadsheets of datamined info just to figure out how systems work.
In short, the story is not good and I can't really recommend it to anybody else because it's such a horribly flawed game with so much wasted potential. I just have really strange tastes and can't put it down because I'm a glutton for punishment and refuse to let the game beat me.
Check out this video for an idea of the ridiculous, weird combat system at hand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYMkUDz3c6U
-
Doing some grinding in TLR and the back half is definitely where it opens up. Last night I 'linked' 18 weak enemies on the overworld, which led to me slaughtering 107 units in total during the battle. And they were super weak enemies, but because I took on so many, I had MASSIVE stat gains at the end of the battle. Like, 5-6 stats for just about every one of my 18 fighters, as well as enhanced skills and class changes. If anybody out there reading this is curious, check out 8:30 in this video (https://youtu.be/CDtKGP710lU) for a demonstration of how wild the stat gains can be from using the battle system properly. It's so addicting to see your chain count get super high and know you're getting huge rewards from battle.
The magic unions in this game are ridiculously overpowered, at least in this particular version. There is an ability called Caustic Blast that will almost always decimate the enemy army by taking out not just the directly targeted union, but at least 2-3 others. Then, often times you can trigger a super powerful ability from a pool of skills called Arcana, which wipe out the entire battlefield in a single magical blast. Once you trigger it, it's pretty easy to do it again for the rest of the game, so I pulled it off about 6 times last night even though I was actively avoiding trying to use it. Now, the units I just started training are already beefed up ready to take on big baddies.
Blah blah blah I love and hate this game but I love it just slightly more than I hate it especially once my hard work starts paying off :)
-
Bumpity bump. I know Ben_Jamin and I are playing Animal Crossing. Anybody else? My friend code is 4250-9730-4436. I have a massive orchard growing which in a few days will have all the fruits in the game. People are free to come and take what they wish.
-
Animal crossing looks pretty cool. Never played the original.
I just got Luigi's Mansion 3. Cool little game. I love spooky stuff so its hitting the spot
-
Prepare yourselves, brave explorers! Set-off for the lush planet PNF-404 when Pikmin 3 Deluxe lands on October 30! This new version for Nintendo Switch features multiple difficulty modes, new side-story missions featuring Olimar and Louie, and all the DLC from the original release.
WOOHOO! But... where's Pikmin 4? :( I never got to play 3 so this will be awesome for me. I never played 2 when it came out, either, but in 2018 I spent like, all February playing 2. I became really obsessed with that, just like the first game. I hope 3 is as fun.
-
Ori and the will of the wisp finally released on the switch. I really liked the 1st one so very excited to play this one.
-
Got Super Mario 3D allstars. Overall, its great but here's two thoughts:
1. Galaxies motion controls- I have a switch lite so I am dealing with touching the screen, and luckily due to the smaller size of the console it just barley works. Its doable, but its a little awkward reaching over. Really wish they would have just mapped it to the right analog sick but oh well :P
2. For being a full price $60 dollar game, I really think Galaxy 2 should have been included, but oh well.
Besides that, I dig the collection. And this is my first time playing Sunshine but its quickly becoming a favorite.
-
Sunshine is amazing but there's some serious BS in that game. Looking at the pachinko level, Corona Mountain, etc. But it's a wonderful game regardless.

The Nvidia shield version (official Nintendo port in China) has that apparently.
Honestly, it is clear they rushed this or simply did not put in much effort at all (kinda sad in comparison that fans have made an actual 1080p widescreen 60 fps non-emulation Mario 64 port on PC in their free time). Nonetheless, the games themselves are fantastic and while as a collection it is subpar and incomplete, the amount of actual great gameplay for it's price isn't, if that makes sense. And two of these games hold up really well visually. So I ordered it as well.
I barely remember anything about Sunshine. I never actually owned it back in the day (played it with friends when I was twelve I think). I look forward to that one the most, as I have played Galaxy in recent times already and for me 64 has aged (though I also look forward to play it, as I last played it on the DS almost ten years ago, I think).
-
I'll always respect 64, but I've played it extensively over the years. I got this collection really for Sunshine and Galaxy.
Sunshine feels so unique. To have a full little island town with NPCs is really cool. And I really love the tropical, chill vibe that it presents. I really like the clean up mechanic as well for what ever reason :lol
-
Soon I will receive the SNES controller. Next week DKC2 will be added, so I am looking forward to checking out what is often called the best Donkey Kong title with the SNES pad. And apparently you can also play stuff like Celeste and some classic collections (Mega Man, Castlevania) with the pad, so it won't be without it's uses.

Sunshine looks like it might be right up my alley. Like I said, i played it back in the day, but not a whole lot and not really on my own.
64 is offcourse a great grandfather of almost any modern third person 3d adventure. To not only revolutionize/popularize 3d gameplay/controls/design principles but also hold up in terms of being fun decades later is nothing short of amazing. The game aged, but it did not age badly at all. At least that is how I felt ten years ago and I think my experience now will be the same.
-
I've been playing an N64 emulator on my PC a lot. Been putting a lot of hours into Mario Golf. That game still holds up as my favorite golf game, even all of these years later. I have to say, I was sooo disappointed with Paper Mario. I played it for the first time the other day and called it quits after 90 minutes or so.
Toy Story 2 is just as excellent as I remember. That one's a heck of a lot of fun.
I've been playing with one of these, and I'm really enjoying the experience.

^^ Liking Toy Story 2 but not liking Paper Mario makes my brain melt. :lol I need to pick up one of those controllers. I emulate N64 games way too much to not have one and that will make the Zeldas so much more bearable.
Do you think I'd be able to use the SNES controller on the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection? I bought that exclusively for Street Fighter II and would love to play it with the original controller.
-
I haven't picked the bundle up yet but it's still a bummer that Mario 64 didn't get as updated as I hoped it could be. The PC modded 64 looks fantastic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2wH9mVbOvk&t=152s

Yeah the first thing I thought of when I fired it up was "wow, this is the exact 96 version", which is still nice to have. But in comparison to the original SNES Allstars game, Super Mario and part 3 were significantly updated for SNES, so seeing that video makes me wish they did a little bit more with it.

Never ceases to amaze what kind of ports hobbyists make as soon as they get their hands on source codes.
-
Now that's the way to play it :lol
More random thoughts on Sunshine
1. The controls are a little whack. The mechanics rely heavily on shooting the water cannon at targets, but it doesn't control like a dual stick shooter. you have to press a dedicated button to lock into shoot mode and its tricky, especially when trying to dodge enemies.
2. I've heard things about the camera. It definitely fights you but its not a deal breaker.
3. There's no day/night cycle so theres this huge sun/shadow line in the town that permanently stays there and never moves so its just kind of funny to see.
I still very much enjoying it though.
-
Enjoying Sunshine too, my only complaint thus far is that I have had noticable framerate dips, which is something that is usually very rare in Mario (or Nintendo) titles. Sunshine reminds me a bit of Mario and Luigi Dream Team. Also a vacation resort and a lot of NPC's and more dialouge than I am used seeing in Mario platformers. I think the atmosphere is nice.
Galaxy is great, but I am not sure I am a fan of using gyro on the controller. It works fine, but on the Switch with a controller the motion stuff feels more like a distraction than a feature. And on a regular Switch using the touch screen while playing a hectic platformer that requires your hands on the buttons fucking sucks. The portability of Galaxy on the regular Switch for me is limited.
Mario 64 is cool, the camera sucks though. Really wish they touched that up in particular.
-
Yeah, it was a little surreal experiencing 64's camera again. Another update that would have been nice.
Galaxy is awesome. I only got to rent it when I had a Wii so its almost new to me. I will say its a little disorienting going upside down and around, but I also think that's a very cool and unique aspect of the game.
I'm also enjoying the satisfying challenge of all 3 games.

For those interested, special Nintendo direct soon:
https://youtu.be/IQz_ECTGGyA
-
Definitely getting Metroid Dread and Botw II
Would have liked to see some Metroid Prime 4 info, but oh well. Its disappointing that prime trilogy doesn't seem like its coming to Switch anytime soon.
Never played any prime game yet sadly.
-
Metroid Dread looks good. Surely going to get it.
Bummed about no news about Metroid Prime 4.
The expansion for Hyrules Warrior looks good.
I was expecting more for BOTW 2, but happy we got new footage.
Everything else I didn't necessarily care for.
-
I think this direct was pretty rough. We are four years into the Switch now and I am expecting more AAA-like Nintendo games to be honest.
Metroid looked very middling visually to me, but I did enjoy Samus Returns and this is a continuation of that, so I have high hopes it will be a good game.
Shin Megami Tensei V might be interesting, it has an anime look that I do actually appreciate. I dislike Persona, but I always wanted to check out the main series. Breath of the Wild 2 looks fantastic, but at this point I know little more than when it was announced aside from some nice world images.
Most other games I did not care for honestly. Advance Wars was great on the gameboy back in the day and probably is still fun, but these days there are tons and tons of great tactics games that, in my opinion, offer a lot more..
The good news is that I have been seeing sales for mainline Nintendo games lately and the price of Switch games seems to have gone down by like 10 euros. I will buy Skyward when it is 30.
Also, wasn't a Switch pro expected this year? Maybe the chip shortage affected those plans?
-
I think this direct was pretty rough. We are four years into the Switch now and I am expecting more AAA-like Nintendo games to be honest.
Sometimes I forget that the switch is 4 years old. I will say, I don't game as much as I used to, but when I do, it's usually Nintendo games and I feel like I've had no interest in buying much of the new stuff. Most of the time I'm replaying a Zelda game, Metroid, Mario Kart or Mario Maker (online is still fun, when you have a good connection). I think the Hyrules Warriors expansion will keep me entertained for a while.
-
And in addition to us being 4 years into the console, Switch online leaves way too much to be desired. Where the hell are the N64, gamecube, genesis games or even the full SNES library?
I would have spent soooo much money buying that stuff again. Oh well
-

Yeah, Nintendo is missing a huge mark on that one. I'm sure there a bajillion legal hurdles with licensing for those titles, and probably on a title-by-title basis as well, but still. It seems like such easy money.
-
Easier money is porting a 10 year old Wii game with updated controls and charge 60 dollars. Or produce a limited run of three emulated 10-25 year old games and sell it for 60. They do not want to decrease the perceived value for N64-Wii(U) titles. I am sure the math of their marketing department is indicating them this is the way to go businesswise.
I have no problem with their NES and SNES strategy though. For 20 euro a year I don't feel ripped off or anything. These games support online multiplayer and the collections are well presented and emulated. And dripfeeding the games does give some of these old games their own little release moment, which can be a nice thing for online communities.
-
Finally a Mario Party Game....And it's Superstars.
Yay, back to old school 20 coins for stars.
-
Was really hoping for some switch games on sale for Prime Day, but it's slim pickings :'(

-
So very true. I'd buy more games on the switch if it had a return policy like steam does.
-
Chino, you nailed it.
Never played skyward sword. Would have bought it at $39 bucks, but they can go to hell with that full price $60 dollar crap.
-
Funny thing is, people still pay for it.
But also, they do a lot of sales and I have picked up some big name games for about $30-$40.
You just have to check the Nintendo Shop every now and then. Also, there's a crapload if indie games, and some so crappy they're selling for like a penny.
-
I have a Nintendo game Cube. My favourite game is Zelda Twilight Princess. It is stupid money for GC. But dirt cheap on WII
I HATE playing Twilight Princess on WII. You have to do laser precision aiming moves in a fraction of a second.
I gave up in the end.
I've actually completed the game in the past on GC though. I just hate the WII - mote.
I remember our very first console was the SNES. Whatever year it was. I was about 12 or so.
My bro and I got a gift each at Christmas and we had to open them at the same time.
Mine was a SNES joypad and my bro got Super Mario All Stars. Hehe. Then Mum bought out the SNES ;D
-
The Wii has ports for GC controllers. Why are you using the wiimote if you prefer the GC version?
-
My GC controller does not work in the Wii ?
-
Is it third party or something?
-
For it to work with a GC controller you'd need to be playing the GC version of the game on the Wii in the compatibility mode. Also later models of the Wii did not include GC sockets or the ability to play GC games.
-

Ohhh. So if you were playing a digital version of the game, the GC controller wouldn't be recognized? I gotcha now.
And I had no idea the black version of the Wii didn't have controller ports (had to look it up). That's really surprising.
-
Yeah, the Wii version does not support the GC controller.
I do expect Twilight Princess HD (WiiU remaster) to hit the Switch at some point in the near future though. Especially if Skyward Sword does well. And Wind Waker HD for that matter.
-
Anyone pick up the new Mario Golf game?
I've spent maybe 30 minutes on the adventure mode, and then maybe an hour or so just playing various forms of stroke play. I'm liking it so far. I haven't tried to play online with friends yet. I'm hoping it's easy.

Me, and same thing as you. I only have been saying Adventure Mode, and I suck at XC Golf. :lol
I am enjoying it so far. Haven't played online or with friends yet. We ended up playing Tony Hawks Pro Skater instead. :lol
-
It looks like a nice chill game but I can't justify these Mario sports games at full price for myself. Mario Tennis on Switch was like 3-4 hours of singleplayer content. In the rare instances during adult life where I am on a couch with friends that are into games, Smash and Mariokart will almost certainly be the games to be played.
-
OLED model just announced.
Personally not worth the upgrade for me, for which I am kind of glad. Overall I have little problem with the Switch screen I own, colors look vibrant and resolution is fine for the size (the revision of 2019). Some slight upgrades on other fronts.
I assume the pro does not exist and we will see a Switch successor announcement in late 2022 or early 2023 or something (if they are to maintain 5-6 year cycles). If Nintendo is smart and implements DLSS with Nvidia, I feel that could lead to a very significant upgrade at reasonable cost.
-
If the new OLED screen is still just 720P but larger than the one on the OG model, wouldn't that mean crappier resolution?
-
If the new OLED screen is still just 720P but larger than the one on the OG model, wouldn't that mean crappier resolution?
Yes, same resolution at 7 inch instead of 6.2. OLED namely has better black levels and a better contrast ratio.
I am personally not that averse for 720p though.
-
I don't think the current iteration of the Switch would handle 1080p in handheld very well. The clock speed of the CPU and GPU would need to be much closer to docked values to retain performance, and that would have a pronounced effect on the battery life. If it tried to run 1080p at the usual handheld clock rates, it would run the games even more poorly than usual.
It's doubtful there will be a higher resolution model until the CPU/GPU are upgraded, so either a Switch Pro (if it exists), or the Switch successor.
-
Got Skyward Sword HD. Its the only one I've never played, so I figured its time to check it out.
Seems ok so far, but I don't have the slightest clue why they made it that you have to hold in the left bumper to allow the right joystick move the camera ???

Without having played this game but having seen the recent trailer, isn't this because the right stick is normally used for your sword/item usage? This is a port of a Wii game that was built around motion plus back in the day.
That said, I can trade in Link's Awakening and get this for very cheap. I am considering it.

Yeah, now that I got the sword it makes more sense. The right stick acts in place of the motion controls, so the sword swings in the way that you move the stick.
I'm a little more used to it now, so we'll see how the rest of the game goes. One thing I will say its a very hard game to play after having spent 150+ hours in BotW and loving every minute of it. Its hard to go back to this style.

N64 and sega genesis games are coming to switch online

NSO is cheap already but I'm not sure I want to pay more just for a small selection of N64 and Genesis games. I might very well buy that N64 controller for emulating, though.

While I don't think it's likely I really, really hope MarioKart 64 is online multiplayer.
-
I'd like to check out Paper Mario and play some Mario Kart. But really, some of these games are better played elsewhere (remakes, remasters, or just vastly superior sequels). I do want Goldeneye 64, my most played N64 game, but that ain't happening.
As for the Genesis. The Genesis collection by SEGA is frequently like 15 dollars and has like 40 games.
I'd honestly be more excited for Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy advanced titles. Many of those actually held up better than the early 3D games.
And they better have adjusted that analog stick's internals so it won't turn limp after a year or so.
Edit: The SEGA collection (SEGA genesis classics) is literally on sale right now for 15 dollars on the Switch and has more than 50 games.

N64 and sega genesis games are coming to switch online
https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/23/22688780/nintendo-switch-online-expansion-pack-64-sega-genesis-controllers
While I don't think it's likely I really, really hope MarioKart 64 is online multiplayer.
That would be a disaster! I love it. I hope so too.
-
I assume it will have online capabilities in the same way the NES and SNES online collections do (online friends can join as second players within the systems that exist in the original titles). I also assume this would mean split screen still, as I doubt Nintendo will touch these titles up.

Bought Metroid Dread and have it pre downloaded for Friday.
Anyone else looking forward to it?

Yup, picking up my physical edition on Friday.
-
Could go for a Metroid Fix right now but not sure I want to drop $60 on this. GIMME PRIME 4!!!
-
I wasn't sure if I wanted a physical copy or digital, going to go for digital to switch between games easier. I'm ready, this will serve as an appetizer for Prime 4 :mehlin
-
I am glad it reviews well, but there are so many fantastic 2d metroidvania games for a couple of bucks out there that I am not really all that interested in laying down 60 bucks for it. It does not even remotely look AAA either.
Sorry to be a downer on Nintendo so often, but I am just not impressed with the Switch lineup 4,5 years in.
I will say that the new Kirby game looks nice. After decades of minor variations on the same gameplay, it feels like a new step for the franchise. Hopefully Yoshi is next.
-
About an hour in and Dread is very decent. Probably the best controlling 2D metroid I've played so far.
Totally agree $60 is too much and I really hope that if people don't buy it because of the price that Nintendo doesn't assume its because people don't like Metroid.
Sorry to be a downer on Nintendo so often, but I am just not impressed with the Switch lineup 4,5 years in.
Me either. My switch as been in a drawer for more than a year. I took it out for Metroid and Diablo II (a 20 year old game) and boy would I have loved to have virtual console with all the old consoles right off the bat instead of just some NES and SNES games with switch online. And sure N64 and more is coming, but its almost been an entire console cycle at this point :P
-
I bought a pair of Switch Lites thinking there'd be a ton of games my GF and I could play together... there's basically nothing. Almost all multiplayer and co-op experiences are only offered in couch mode. We could use one Switch Lite and a pair of Joycons for player 2, but that's stupid. I wanted to buy two copies of Unravel Two and Mario Party, but we wouldn't be able to play co-op together on each of our switches. We'd have to find a way to each share the same Switch Lite screen. It's so dumb.
I thought the entire point of making a handheld console like that was so you and your friends could use them on the go together. I feel kind of deceived.
-
I thought that similar to Mario Kart and Mario Maker, you could do local multiplayer where each person is at their own Switch? I'll check when I get home but I believe there is a way of doing it.

Some games work. Last of Us and Mario Golf play just fine on individual Lites. Mario Kart is one of the other games that works that way as well I believe.
-
I bought a switch because of breath of the wild but I've been incredibly underwhelmed by the console overall. I'll dust it off for the multiplayer mariokart 64 experience but otherwise I'm done supporting Nintendo.

I'm sort of there as well. I guess shame on me more not diving deeper, but I expected there to be more legacy stuff and a much larger emphasis on on-the-go gaming.
And I know that graphics aren't everything, but these days, power is. I knew the Switch was lacking compared to last gen, but it's an incredibly weak console. I wonder if it'll be able to handle the III/Vice City/San Andreas bundle that's getting released for it. Despite having it on PC, I was thinking of getting Tropico 6 for the Switch, but the reviews on the Lite were basically like "don't bother". Everything is remodeled to a terribly low resolution, and the game looks like it drops into single fps territory as soon as you start moving the camera around.
-
Honestly the steam deck has me more excited. It has more power and I'll be able to play the hundreds of steam games I already own, whereas Nintendo rarely puts games on sale.
It's blows my mind that only now can you use Bluetooth headphones on the switch, and everyone forgives Nintendo with the excuse of "oh it's just Nintendo"
/end mildly buzzed rant
-
Well, I guess I got a physical copy after all. My brother gifted me the special edition.

I wonder with people saying that they are disappointed with the Switch, is it just that you enjoyed Breath of the Wild and maybe Mario Odyssey but haven't been checking out the other stuff the platform has?
Those two are of course the heavy hitters, but the thing is, Nintendo believe in a certain kind of video game, and if you're going to enjoy their consoles you have to be open-minded and just go with the flow of what they are pushing. There's stuff like splatoon, xenoblade, smash, mario golf, paper mario, astral chain, yoshi's wool World tropical freeze, etc... I just wonder when people say they are disappointed if they haven't just overlooked all that and assumed they wouldn't like it. Not everything Nintendo does is for me, but almost everything they do is a fun video game experience that takes me back to the type of game that I grew up playing and enjoying.
-
I held off on the Switch for a long time, despite really wanting to play Breath of the Wild. We ended up getting one for the family to help my 10 year old with all the time she was spending at home, with virtual learning, not going to the pool, rec center, spending less time with friends, etc... We got some fun family time out of Kart and Just Dance, which she really wanted after playing at a friend's house. I enjoyed BotW, though would have spent many more hours back in my gaming days (before marriage and family). Kart is always a fun diversion, and Just Dance was much more fun than I anticipated. I got Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury as a gift, which I liked. These days it gets some use either with an indie game or me and my kid playing something together. Was it worth the purchase price? If it gives us good bonding time at home at a time when our options are limited, yeah, it was.

There's quite a ton of Indie games too. Most are shit, and pointless and are on sale for like 90% off. But those gems are good. And it's nice being able to play some of these Indie games on a handheld rather than on a computer screen, such as To The Moon.
My friend uses it for Youtube, to play Eternal, and is infatuated with visual novels. There are tons of indie multiplayer games but are way more fun with more than 2 people.
For me, depending on what genre and style of game you prefer is what matters when choosing a game system. I like the Switch because I can take it with me and play my friends using my switch by using Local Online Play.
Local Online Play only works when you are connected to wi-fi. I also think it works without wi-fi if all the people have a copy of the game. I am not too sure about that though.
I do like how Smash Bros. does it by letting you use your Mii characters, and spirits you acquired, to play against your pal sitting right next to you. It's fun doing this when he has a tv, I would alternate from looking at his screen to looking at my switch screen. :lol

Yeah, I concur with this. Of course you're not going to get stuff like The Last of Us or whatever on a Nintendo console because that's not what Nintendo does. But other consoles also aren't putting out games like Odyssey; it's just a completely different mindset and set of priorities. I get Nintendo consoles because that's where you play Nintendo games.
Unless people only want to have one console, I guess, which is a simplicity I can respect if not agree with.
-
Yeah, I personally only have a Switch at the moment. I haven't had a PlayStation since...2007 I think, and an XBox since 2017. I just don't game as much anymore and the Nintendo Franchise games are the only ones I'm interested in (lately). I am sure there will be a game that will make me want to get an Xbox again (Fable 4?) or a PS, just has not happened yet.

I own plenty of Switch games and got to play plenty of them due to lockdowns. And I most certainly am not expecting Sony-esque AAA experiences at all, nor do I really want them on a Switch like device. Firstly, I do feel WiiU+3DS has a way more impressive output (and I very much include BotW as it is both a WiiU and Switch game) than 4,5 years of Switch and I doubt that will change much. Some of the most majorly marketed Switch releases are WiiU ports and even a Wii port.
But it is not only that, the market has changed. Indies often do a better job at offering vibrant gameplay first experiences. Hades, Hollow Knight, Bug Fables, Celeste, Steamworld Dig 2 etc. all are quite superior to Nintendo's (2d) output throughout the last years. And that list is getting more extensive. Furthermore, games like Psychonauts 2, the Ratchet games, Yooka Laylee Impossible Lair, Sackboy Adventure etc. are perhaps not always quite "there" compared to Nintendo's better efforts, but not too far off either. For me, at least.
That is not to say the Switch does not have excellent games you need a Switch for (I especially love Fire Emblem Three houses, Luigis Mansion 3, and Smash Ultimate), but which major platform doesn't. For me thus far it is the most dissapointing library out of all the devices I own/have owned. I expected more for a Nintendo device that is selling like crazy (so large playerbase and investment potential) and has their handheld and console efforts combined.
I appreciate that stuff like Metroid 4 (an outsourced distaster) and Retro studios (no game in 8 years) can go wrong, but in the end that does not change my dissapointment.
Furthermore, their rereleases are dissapointing compared to the competition. And more expensive as well. And if there is one company that has a large library of classics, it is Nintendo.
-
So I put about 7 hours into Metroid Dread and it's really fun so far. Though I have a feeling I am very close to the end, which is a bummer because I am enjoying the game a lot, but we will see.
It feels and plays great.
-
I'm also really enjoying it.
Been playing the 2D ones for decades and Dread really freshen's everything up in a way I didn't think was possible. And it controls like a dream.
-

For me it just feels like everything is half-assed, or at best, shy of its true potential and not quite finished. I was done and bored with the new Mario Golf after about a week (I beat it in one night). Meanwhile, the Nintendo 64 version which included things like birdie trophies and mini golf (both absent from the new Switch version), still delivers better value two decades later.

So the expansion pack is $50 which is crazy overpriced to me imo.
-
I currently have the Family Plan because of my nephew. Going from $35 to 80$ seems a bit much. Not sure I'll do it :\
-
.
-
That price increase is rediculous
-
That's insane and a big hell no from me. If it was a ton of N64 games, fine, but I refuse to have paid DLC for a game I have no desire to own be bundled into the deal.
-
Its very lame. I Really only would get it for the N64 games, but all that I really want to play is Majora's mask and F zero x, which aren't even available at launch and god knows when they will be considering Nintendo slow drips its online retro game releases. All I really want to do I buy what I want, but oh well.
And where the hell is Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch already too while I'm at it. :P
-
For me, I only considered it because of Mario Kart multiplayer (I wonder if Nintendo patched out all the glitches and shortcuts :lol). But in reality, how often am I going to play all those games to justify the price? Just doesn't seem worth it to me.
-
That is a nope from me. I still think their base offering is pretty decent, but this expansion pack does not feel like value for your money.
I am hearing a lot of good things about Metroid. But one of my friends finished it in less than 8 hours. Hopefully I can use his copy to play it, because I am not spending the 60 euros. Sales are apparently well though, so I think/hope 2d Metroid is here to stay.
-
I'm getting it because I've been wanting to play Banjo and Kazooie since Banjo became a Smash character.
I am also looking forward to the future releases of obscure games. Such as Flying Dragon, I liked that game as a kid and never really got to go far in its campaign mode because it was one of those uncommon games that required a memory card inserted into the slot.
-
I'll probably get it when Majora's Mask comes out. Might be my favorite Zelda and I never got to finish the damn thing
-
I missed Majora's Mask on N64, not sure why, I loved Ocarina. I got it later on the Gamecube as part of that special Zelda release. I made it through maybe half of it but got too frustrated and quit. I played it start to finish many years later, with a little help from a walkthrough. If you enjoyed it at all, you should try and revisit it, and get some help if you need it. It's worth it for the journey.
-
I do want to check out Majora's Mask. Played it for a bit as a ten year old but can't say I came far. I have the 3DS remake though and I like how that one looks.

I already replayed Banjo on the excellent remasters on the Xbox Rare collection. I will say the Banjo games have aged, but it was still a massive nostalgia trip I really enjoyed.

Metroid Dread has finally really clicked with me.
Besides Breath of the wild, its probably my favorite Switch game and definitely one of my favorite Metorids.
-
Dread is great and tons of fun, I just wish it was a bit longer. I 100% the game on hard in less than a week. Only playing a few hours here and there.
I would think there will be some DLC in the plans, at least I hope so.
-
Is part of the 100% filling in the dark parts of the map?
Because my OCD brain is obsessing over it :lol
-
No! Thank God :lol It was driving me crazy until I realized it would be too much work with no reward so I left it alone
-
.
-
I was hoping so bad that we would have gotten some decent announcements at the game awards, but no :'(
Really would have loved to see Metroid Prime 4 info or Prime trilogy switch info. Oh well
-
Along with all the games I've bought and played this year, I'm rounding out 2021 with a flurry of JRPG goodness. Finally got around to getting FF7, 8 Remastered, and 12 Zodiac Age for half off so I now have FFs 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, and 12 on my Switch! And today I picked up a physical copy of Dragon Quest XI S so I will be busy for a LONG time!
-
Picked up a Switch for Christmas, the bundle that comes with Mario Kart. Got a few games to get me started as well. I grabbed Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Street Fighter 30th Aniv collection, and my brother in law gave me Dead Cells. Pretty excited to spend some time playing through these.

That is an amazing collection of games to start with dude. Hope you love them!
Picked up several games for stupid cheap yesterday. OlliOlli Stance, I think that's the name, a sidescrolling skateboard game for a couple bucks. Slay the Spire for $7.49. Overcooked Special Edition for a couple bucks. Saints Row 4 for less than a dollar (93% off + a few gold points).
-
Started playing Breath of the Wild a few nights ago. Man, what a game! Just got the paraglider to get of the Plateau. Trying to limit myself, as I don't want to stay up all night playing. It's all I want to do right now. There is just so much to explore and work through. This game is quite the journey.

Enjoy, it really is a journey that rewards you for exploring.
-
My only real gripe with that game was the inability to craft arrows. And lightening.
-
Wow. Picked up both Yooka Laylee games for like $16 total on the eshop. Always was wary about playing 40 for each given the mixed reviews I'd read but for those prices it was a no brainer. I've bought so many games lately and haven't played any of them... I'm so bad at not resisting sales
I think it said the sale ran through the 5th... bought them literally in the nick of time :lol

First one is decent but I can see why it reviewed badly.
Second one reviewed well and is, in my opinion, not far off from Donkey Kong Country by Retro quality. It is a really good game in a whole other ballpark than the first one.
-
Banjo kazooie is out now for switch online for anyone that is into it.
But more importantly, they just announced today that Majora's Mask will be released in February and that made my day. I love that game, never finished it and can't to play it once again.

I always wanted to try Crono Cross ever since I was a kid, but it never officially released in Europe. I think I will go for the Switch version, as it has been my go to device of old Square Enix games .
-
No Man's Sky is surprising.
I wish cross platform would become a thing for everything. Not just in playing with friends, but with profiles. I have NMS on my PS4 and PC already, and thus two accounts/characters. I'd happily get it on the switch two if I could just carry on with current progress. I'd love to be able to play the same character regardless where or what I'm playing on. I guess that's where the Steam Deck could shine.
-

Its a very cool game, but I didn't get far in it as a kid since the battle system went over my head. The environments have a chill island vibe and the music is some of my very favorite I've come across in video games.
I am looking forward to trying it again, and I will also be trying Earthbound for the first time as well.
-
Nintendo is really going for nostalgia feelings here. I might try some of these games but nothing stood out for me except for Kirby.
Portals is a great game, but I personally don't need to play it again. The update to Dread is a bit underwhelming, but I might give it a try just to see if I can beat the game that way (I guess it's a free update, so I shouldn't complain). No Man Sky looks interesting. I've been wanting to try it out so this might be the time for it. Kirby looks interesting, and is giving me huge Mario Odyssey vibes.
I have mixed feelings about the Mario Kart 8 DLC, specially because the waves will be spread out until the end of 2023. That's a long time from now but oh well.
Patiently waiting for Metroid Prime 4 and BOTW2.
-
Patiently waiting for Metroid Prime 4
This x 1,000,000,000
-
At this point in time I am not optimistic for Metroid Prime 4 to be honest, until I see something that indicates it will be good. Retro Studios has not released a new game for 8 years now and I believe the leads behind the trilogy aren't there anymore. I wonder what happened at Retro studios.
In good news, I love how the Live a Live remake looks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGWF4JR_h5E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGWF4JR_h5E)
I once played a bit of a fan translation of the SNES original, it seemed like a good cult classic that never saw release in the west. Looking forward to this and Kirby.
-
Considering that Prime 4 is taking as long as it is, it would be nice if Nintendo would throw us a bone with Prime trilogy on Switch, but oh well.
-
So glad Earthbound is out and lots of people can finally experience this amazing story and awesome game.
Hopefully, that will help Mother 3 get developed for an actual release in the US.
-
So glad Majora's Mask is out. Been really looking forward to this.
And Earthbound has been one hell of a ride too. I've never played any game quite like it.
-
I saw MM was out. I have thought about replaying that. I didn't play it till years after it was originally released, and needed an online guide for a few parts. Wish I would have played it in real time, I imagine it would have been the type of game I would have loved. The timing just didn't work out.
I see Dark Souls is on Switch. I've been meaning to play that but am afraid I don't have the time or patience in my life these days that I've read the game requires.
-
I've been doing good at keeping up with the N64 games. At first I thought putting out one game every month was slow but it's the perfect pace in my opinion. I 100% Banjo-Kazooie in time to start 100%ing Majora's Mask. I wonder what's next. Licensing is probably hard as hell these days so it'll never happen but I want to see Mystical Ninja, Harvest Moon 64, MegaMan 64 (Legends), the Snowboard Kids games, and a bunch of others. It would be *really* cool if they translated the first Animal Crossing game, but that's like hoping for a surprise announcement that they'll put Geno in Smash Bros.
-
New Pokemon games look like trash (visually). To be expected, I know. People criticise stuff like Assassins Creed and Call of Duty to be a yearly massproduced thing, but at least those have big development teams and production values. In my opinion Pokemon is the biggest offender. Some random JRPG's on even the Switch look so much better.
Also, I was looking at Pokemon Sword and Shield trailers and that looks a bit better to me? Is it because the newer ones are open world?
-
I think Nintendo has cracked the console code for their demographic from a hardware (console - not specs) standpoint. The idea of the switch is damn near perfect if Nintendo's intention going forward is to have their mobile and their home console devices be one in the same. I really don't think there's any reason to change it. It's ideal. They really need to focus on power going forward. I don't even care that much about graphics, I just want games to play well. I tried Tropico 6 on my Switch light, and it's sinful that that game was ever allowed on the store. Not only are the graphics disgustingly poor, but even in that state the game runs like absolute garbage. It's legitimately unplayable. That could be a developer problem more than anything, but it's not just that game. Even Breath of the Wild, something designed for last gen, stutters and chops like crazy on my Switch Lite.
I would be completely content with Nintendo keeping the Switch as a long term platform with them just beefing up its specs every 6-7 years.
-
I would love a more powerful Switch. I'm definitely not a graphics whore but I would like something a little more powerful as a lot of games, especially ports, struggle even in docked mode.
The new Pokémon games do look like trash, visually. GameFreak just stinks at making things look high quality although they do good with art style. Arceus looks awful too. The BDSP remakes and Let's Go look far better in comparison. Sword and Shield don't even look good. I wish they spent more time and money making them look better. There need to be some higher standards haha
-
The remaster of Chrono Cross just came out.
Although I didn't love it quite as much as Chrono Trigger, I still really enjoyed Chrono Cross as a kid, and its got some of the most beautiful video game music that I've ever come across.
Probably gonna pick this up.

Breath of the Wild sequel has a title and release date finally!
Tears of the Kingdom - May 12, 2023.
Nothing else from the Direct interest me
-
I think I counted like 7 Farming games (and bump that to like, 11, if you factor in the "Daily Task" and "Crafting" JRPGs they announced).
But Bayonetta 3 and Tears of the Kingdom are nice entries for the Switch that will pull it through for me. I'll be hung up on Xenoblade 3 for awhile still, anyway.

Goldeneye with online play?
Ok Nintendo, have my online subscription, you magnificent bastards.

Poke'mon Stadium 1 and 2, and Mario Party 1,2, and 3 drew my interest.
-
Mario Party 1 seems like a bad idea.
-
I really want to get the Switch. Been putting it off for a while. I guess the OLED is the top of the line model?
-
Never thought we would see goldeneye. That is awesome
-

You're not getting any performance boost but you will get the OLED screen. So yeah, it's the way to go, but it's really not a big deal if you go Switch regular. Just don't get a Lite.
-
Ok, thanks! :tup
-
Can't wait to play Goldeneye again when it drops! Lately I've been enjoying Resident Evil 6. Never played this one until I picked it up on sale, and I like it so far. RE 4 is still the best of the series though. I'm gonna grab the Ninja Turtles Cowabunga Collection later today. Loved the NES TMNT games back in the day. It will be great to play the first game without the slowdown and sprite flicker. That water level used to give me nightmares.

My Lite gets quite a bit of use. I like it outside of it's lackluster multiplayer abilities.

I think it's awesome they added an online multiplayer to this game, but I personally wouldn't touch it. Goldeneye is a game that did not age well at all. Granted, that's from playing it on a N64, they would have to change the game play to make it work for me on the switch.

I'm excited but very skeptical. Mario kart 64 online was not great, hell playing two player on one switch left much to be desired
-
Hey there friends!
Anyone looking to get rid of any Nintendo Switch games they're done playing?
Just curious! If you have any let me know, my kids got a Lite and we are looking for games, shoot me your titles and prices to my DM.

Goldeneye Friday
I'll be playing the shit out of it
-
I'm a bit out of the know. Is the only way I can play Goldeneye on my Switch by being subscribed to that monthly service?
-
I'm a bit out of the know. Is the only way I can play Goldeneye on my Switch by being subscribed to that monthly service?
Nintendo Switch online +Expansion Pack. They have monthly or yearly options I think.
-
Lame. I'd have happily forked over $50 just for this. I don't play the Switch often enough to justify the monthly or annual subscription.
-
I honestly don't get the excitement. Has anyone actually played Goldeneye (on N64) recently? It's a terrible experience mostly because FPS games have come a long way and the controls are just terrible.
-
I haven't played Goldeneye recently, but did play through Perfect Dark not too long ago.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
-

I have very little nostalgia for Goldeneye or the N64 in general. That being put up front, I highly doubt there's any fun to be had in playing it now.
-
I have massive nostalgia for Goldeneye. I do think it aged poorly, but I will have fun with it regardless.
The online functionality of the Switch seems neat, but I doubt any of my friends that own a switch are into this game :sadpanda: Most of my gaming friends are 5 or more years younger, so they grew up with the ps2/Gc/Xbox or even Wii as their first console.
I will probably play this one on gamepass, as I already have a sub for that. I hope the xbox version will be the cancelled xbox 360 version of the past, as the remasters for Banjo Kazooie/Tooie and Perfect Dark were excellent. But I assume it is the 64 version at higher resolution (hopefully with non-N64 framerate).
And talking switch, I started a job that has more travel (cra), so I will be using it more again. I bought more Switch games than I should have recently, for very cheap (there were many deals), so have quite the backlog.
-
I have massive nostalgia for Goldeneye. I do think it aged poorly...
The happiest (sober) times of my collegiate life were spent playing Goldeneye, Super Mario Kart, and Kart 64. I've played both Kart games over the years since then, but cannot honestly recall if I've played Goldeneye in 20 years. I feel like I hooked it up to my N64 emulator at some point, but cannot swear to that. So I can't speak to how it has aged.
I don't have Nintendo Online or whatever is required to play this, and I'm not sure I have a burning desire to play it anyway.
-
I'm gonna do the 7 day trial, play the shit out of it and then go on with my life
Nevermind, the trial doesn't include n64 games :P
-
Saw some tiktoks of it on xbox and it may look to be better for the controllers today. That would make me potentially change how I feel.
-
Broke down and got a subscription to play goldeneye.
Had to play around with the controls for a while to get something playable, but its doable. Its definitely dated, but I'm having fun with it for the most part.
Back in 98/99 I was so utterly obsessed with this game.
-
The xbox version is a different version, not quite a remaster, but it has modern controls, it plays well.
Massive nostalgia, but I still think games like Turok (2) and Doom 64 aged better.
Has anyone tried the online mode on Switch? Is it only friend invites or can you hook up with strangers? (never used online functionalities of the Nintendo classics).
-
I haven't messed with the multiplayer yet, but I did beat the main game :lol
Of course there's two higher difficulties to go through, so I'll mess with those next.
-
I've played mario kart 64 multiplayer for a bit and honestly the online component isn't really great. I don't have a lot of high hopes for goldeneye 64 for switch which makes it even more shitty that the xbox version doesn't have multiplayer.
-
Now that I'm at a point where I'm back on my feet financially, I'm considering a Switch.
If I'm primarily going to play on the TV, is there a reason to get the OLED? Or should I just save some money and buy a regular ol' Switch?
-
OLEDs main advantages are the better screen and battery life IIRC, so if you don't plan to use it as a portable system you can probably save some money. That being said, as someone who has done 90% of their switch gaming in portable mode, you'd be surprised how much portability increases the opportunities to have a quick play.
-
I definitely use the Switch in portable mode more than I anticipated I would. I never owned a handheld gaming device before, so that was a new experience for me. Even when I am home alone I often play portable instead of on the 65" TV.
-
In my view the Switch is a fantastic handheld and a serviceable console. If you are into console gaming I would wait for the end of this year, when we will probably hear more about the next Nintendo platform (switch is 6 years old now). It works well, but I don't think Switch games look appealing on a large (4k) tv.
I've played mario kart 64 multiplayer for a bit and honestly the online component isn't really great. I don't have a lot of high hopes for goldeneye 64 for switch which makes it even more shitty that the xbox version doesn't have multiplayer.
Hmm, oh well, maybe some day. MK64 I don't mind, I think MK8 brings a great experience. Goldeneye is a type of MP shooter that just doesn't get made anymore and would be fun for a bit.
-
Nintendo Direct, tomorrow at 5pm eastern. Here's hoping for Metroid Prime!
-
I would love if they announced anything Metroid prime related.
If they say that prime trilogy is available for switch, I will buy it. If they say prime 4 comes out soon I will buy it.
-
I would be surprised if Metroid Prime isn't a Switch 2 title or a crossgen one (like Breath of the Wild was). But they rebooted development in 2019, so it does does seem possible after 4 years.
I assume this will be a Zelda info blowout?
-
FIRST METROID PRIME REMASTERED AVAILABLE TODAY!!!
-
GameBoy and GameBoy Advance for Online.
Hopefully this leads to a Mother 3 release.
-
I'm very impressed with this Nintendo Direct, this is probably the best one they've done in a long time. I am greatly anticipating the new story DLC for Xenoblade 3, and I'm also quite interested in Pikmin 4, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, and the Castlevania DLC for Dead Cells.
-

All I'm gonna say is its about damn time. I've been wanting to play this game for like 10+ years and just never had a console where it was available. I'm buying/pre ordering it as soon as I get home
-
Yeah, definitely long overdue. I was expecting the full trilogy but this will do for now.

Yeah there was a lot of interesting stuff announced for sure. I might give in and get the Nintendo Online + expansion because of the Gameboy Advance games. There are a few I never played but always wanted to.

I think you might be right here. Given that instead of the entire trilogy, we only got the first game, I am assuming they'll release Metroid Prime 2 at some point before the end of the year, and Prime 3 maybe early next year. At which point there will be information about the new system along with Prime 4. But I am happy with what was announced today, between replaying Prime 1, playing Tears of the Kingdom and giving those gameboy advance games a shot, I should have enough entertainment for a while.
-
FIRST METROID PRIME REMASTERED AVAILABLE TODAY!!!
WHOA! Prime on Switch?! I've played through the Prime games, which I love to varying degrees, enough times to the point I never thought I'd have a desire to revisit, but this changes things!
-
I'm looking forward to messing around with the game boy and GBA games. loved those as a kid
-
I never owned a GameBoy or GBA but have played a few GBA games via emulator. Might check this out as well.
-
Looking forward to playing gba games on the Switch, that will get me to sign up for the service again.
I am disappointed that Metroid Remastered is basically a full priced standalone release at 40 euros. But it is good to see it release, I assume the other titles will follow (but who knows with Nintendo, haha)
Edit:
Nice, I definitely want to play these:
-Metroid Fusion
-Minish Cap
-Fire Emblem
-
Wow, I just realized minish cap was available.
I've been wanting to play that game for about 20 years almost. I just never got around to playing it, so I will be playing that for sure.
-
I just watched/skimmed the actual direct, good show, several unexpected titles I am for sure interested in.
And Metroid has been updated more than I initially thought, which is good.

Same. I love 2d Zelda games, moreso than the 3d ones in fact, despite me being reaaally bad at them (the 90's releases, that is).
-
Just realized this is the 3rd time I've bought Metroid Prime if we count the Prime trilogy. Just played for a few minutes last night. Controls will take a bit longer to be comfortable with. Only tried one option so don't know which will work best for me.
-
Messed around with Prime remaster today. So far I think its pretty well done :tup
-
Metroid Fusion comes to switch online next week
https://www.engadget.com/metroid-fusion-comes-to-switch-online-expansion-pack-on-march-9th-165346579.html
-
I played a little bit of the Metroid Prime remaster. I was wrong earlier with my disappointment (seperate release, not a trilogy), it is a high effort remaster. I am amazed that it holds up well on my 55 inch tv at 60 fps. Especially organic environments look nice. My only qualm is that the suit of Samus kind of looks like the textures haven't quite popped in, I think it is a bit at odds with the rest of the visuals at times.
-
Its very well made.
While playing, I often forget that its a 20 year old game. It really feels like a new release.
-
Started playing Metroid Remastered, and enjoying it a lot so far. The moment the Title screen music started, it brought me right back to 2002-2003.
-
Just got a Switch the other day, and am playing Metroid Dread. Halfway through it now, and damn it's awesome. Very difficult, but so rewarding.

As someone who isn't an expert gamer, I thought the challenge and difficulty on Metroid Dread was perfect. Except for that last boss, whom I gave up on.

It is about as ageless as a game can be. Overall it is an excellent game. I am not sure how much I enjoy some combat sections, but the exploration, atmosphere, (light)puzzles, and overall core gameplay/controls are all fantastic. Almost finished it.
-
Finished Prime remastered over the weekend. While I surprisingly remembered a lot from the game, it took me a few hours to find the final 2 artifacts. Going to play it on hard mode, and see if I can complete it at 100%, which has always been a challenge with Metroid games, given all the hidden missile expansions and what not.
There's a gameplay presentation for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that was just released, along with a Zelda Switch OLED.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6qna-ZCbxA
-
Finished Metroid Prime, great game. I missed a couple of scans and upgrades, but got most of it.
New Zelda looks great. BotW but with more/other abilities in your toolkit. And a bit of the tedium resolved by new mechanics (weapon durability and climbing every mountain). I wonder how much the world has changed and how much it has been expanded. I finally almost finished BotW, now doing the DLC before I head to Ganon.

Same, it was just too long of a battle tbh. I ended up watching a gameplay of the ending, and damn, that was insane.
-
There's currently a Mario sale for the switch. I got paid today so figured I should grab something since I hated paying full price for an older Mario game just a month ago (Super Mario 3D World which I am almost finished with, but probably won't come back until my next trip).
So I grabbed Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8. My gf and I will hit up the Mario Kart and I'll save Odyssey for when I'm done with 3D world. Each game was on sale for $40.
-
I got Odyssey as well a few days ago, quite a fun game so far. It feels a bit emptier compared to the Galaxy games tho, and the mix of realistic art with the more stylish one looks a bit off to me, but the music and gameplay are great.
-
I really enjoyed Odyssey. It's a great introduction to, and showcases the capabilities of, the Switch. Having the sort of open world feel is also what made it fun for me. Of course, it's not immune to the open world feeling a bit empty at moments. The hat mechanic is a neat feature, and it's quite fun playing the game with the different outfits available for Mario.
I wanted to try and 100% but once I saw the jump rope quest I instantly knew I was not going to complete this at all. :lol
-
I plan on shelling out $70 for Tears of the Kingdom as soon as its out, but am also wondering if it will be necessary to pre-order it? I bought BotW on cartridge, and will want to for this also.
-
I might actually not buy Tears of the Kingdom right away. I'm still only about 50% through Dragon Quest XI (if that), and I've got who-the-hell-knows longer of Elden Ring left (though, I'm getting tired of it). Why buy a new game at this point?
-
I have the CE of TofK pre ordered. I doubt the regular version will sell out.
-
I enjoyed BotW but I didn't love it like so many others seemed to. Watching that video with Eji Aonuma doesn't inspire me to rush out and order TotK. Those new mechanics aren't something that interests me much. I enjoyed the Divine Beasts and the Shrines, but I missed delving in to a dungeon/temple, finding items, collecting keys, exploring paths, and defeating bosses.

Your not alone. That is the very reason why my friend did not enjoy Breath of The Wild at all. He got bored with it because there really isn't much to do.

There's a lot to do, I just didn't find much of it very engaging, at least once the excitement of having a new Zelda game wore off.

I didn't love it either. I don't have much interest in the new game.
-
The thing with BOTW is that it's so different, yet so similar to traditional Zelda games, that I find it hard to compare it to other games. I loved BOTW, and there is certainly a lot to do in the game, specially with the DLC that added hours of gameplay to the game. What I did not like about the game is the fragmented/thin story (Having to find memories to piece together the story was clever, but did not work that well for me). Maybe I'll replay it before TOTK comes out. I finished Metroid Prime already and have nothing to play until TOTK. I still have yet to beat the Trial of the Sword in Master Mode.
I'm looking forward to TOTK, but only because it's a Zelda game, not because anything I've seen excites me. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but it feels more like an expansion of BOTW rather than a new game.
-

BotW has some "best ever" moments for me and I love the world they crafted, but there are some significant drawbacks that make it a 8/10 game at best for me.
My main qualm is this:
Game progression nullifies the need to use the game's mechanics and/or strategy quite early on. For example, early on you have to plot routes to climb mountains and manage stamina. After a while this is completely trivial and climbing stuff is just pressing the analog stick upwards and eating something if necessary. People say that Assassins Creed's climbing is mindless, but for about 3/5 of my BotW playthrough the climbing was literally pressing the stick upwards, eating a meal and waiting.
TotK excites me, but I hope they balance the game (progression) differently. For example, crossing the lake with a self-made vehicle is awesome. But it will only work if a) the reward is good and b) your stamina will not soon be adequate to just cross the lake swimming. Force players to be creative with the vast amount of gameplay tools and reward them for it. A massive open world needs way more interesting stuff than just seeds and easily breakable gear for me. See Elden Ring, where you can find many cool unique NPC's/quests, weapons, enemies, upgrade items etc. in unexpected corners.
-
I really enjoyed Botw and had probably 100 hours of enjoyment, but I'm just not really blown away by the sequel footage. I'll eventually play it, but I'm not counting down the days or anything.
-
I've stopped paying attention to anything after the second teaser/trailer/whatever you want to call it since it lacked the pizzazz of the final BOTW trailer, which is still one of the best trailers I've seen. I'm hoping to pick it up next month and be pleasantly surprised.
I can kind of get the critiques some have had on BOTW but I felt the vastness of the landscape and methods of exploring kept my interest for way longer than it probably should have. I'd spend 8-10 hours roaming around, not really get anything done except for collect a bunch of items for upgrades, and not really care. It was just a cool space to be in. I'm curious if those with some qualms somewhat appreciate the different approach the game took instead of treading into another formulaic game with 6-8 themed dungeons. I did not get a chance to play Skyward Sword so I can't comment on that but the Zelda template for many of the previous games was getting beyond stale and BOTW was a much needed fresh take. I do hope they add enough to TOTK to make it its own thing instead of just "BOTW but in the clouds" but being so far removed from my only playthrough when BOTW first came out I don't think I'll mind at all jumping back into that space.
My only fear is that since then I've played some absolute gems of open world games that, while different series, definitely got me deeply hooked into the genre. I'll try not to compare but it'll be tough.
-
I did not get a chance to play Skyward Sword so I can't comment on that but the Zelda template for many of the previous games was getting beyond stale....
If that is your take on the "Zelda template," you absolutely should NOT play Skyward Sword. :)
-
I've heard as much :lol
Also something about backtracking or killing the same boss multiple times. I'm sure there's some merit to the game as all Zelda games have but it may not be quite what I'm looking for at this point.
-

Twilight Princess was the first new Zelda game I played, and this is going back to NES days (minus Majora's Mask, which I didn't play when it was released due to life issues) where I felt disappointed. So I really wanted to like Skyward Sword. It has a couple good elements, but it was still a letdown, and made me question if this franchise had a future outside of its reputation and name.
Found out today the president of Nintendo of America's name is Doug Bowser. Look it up.
New Tears of the Kingdom video today.

It is a really good trailer, excited for the game!
One thing though, I think the voice acting is a bit sub par in this trailer. Same for BotW in general. Thankfully the voice acting is minimal, but it mostly sounds amateurish to me when there are cutscenes. With the amount of talent out there and the modern standards even in the indiest of games, I don't understand it.
-
I played the orginal with Japanese voice acting, and based on that dub I think i will do so for the sequel. Looks hype af though.
-

I take this comment back, the new trailer looks great and showed how different the game will be. Very excited now :hefdaddy
-
I started playing BOTW again and the game sucked me back in. The exploration aspect of the game alone keeps me entertained enough to not want to stop playing. The game showed my last saved gameplay was 2019, I thought I played it more recently but guess not. But anyways, I read that TOTK was leaked, and people have been playing it already so I went on youtube to see if there are any videos, and instead I found this, and I can't stop laughing :lol There are so many of them, but this one in particular I find very funny:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxsCxix3EdM
-
I looked at a non-spoilerish impression thread based on the leaks and have very high expectations for TOTK. They took BOTW and expanded it greatly but also put in some classic Zelda stuff.
I also bought a Switch Oled, the TOTK version to be exact, with a tradein deal of my original+ model. I travel for work these days and especially on hotels a Switch is nice. The Oled has a much more pleasant screen size to use in tabletop mode with a pro controller. And the overall image is much better. Also, I think the Zelda edition looks and feels very nice.
-
There's a review of Tears of the Kingdom posted by IGN on YouTube. I tried to watch only a couple seconds of it here and there to go in as spoiler-free as possible, but did see they ended the review with the word Masterpiece. The first sentence in the description is: "This is an unfathomable sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, somehow improving upon it in nearly every way..."
-
My brother got an early (physical) copy of the game, don't know how. But he's been playing the game for over a week now and told me that he thinks is better than BOTW. I'm picking up a physical copy later on today but might not get to play it until next week or so. We'll see :corn
If the reason the game was delayed so much shows in the game quality, I'm not mad about it.
-
It certainly looks like there's tons of stuff to do.
I've got a little too much going on at the moment to sink my teeth really into it, but I'll definitely pick up tears at some point.

Someone at a distribution facility dropped the ball. Reddit has been filled with people getting their copies early and everything leaked last week as a result.
I don't think the leaks and early release are going to hurt anything though. I was looking at reviews yesterday, and I haven't seen a game so highly and unanimously praised in a long time.

Damn, that's some high ratings for sure. Can't wait :metal
-
I think TotK is exceptional a couple of hours in. I laways enjoyed BotW but this one clicks with me more. Though I will say my favourite stretch of BotW was probably those first 15-20 hours or so. But I am loving the inventiveness of the new powers and the atmosphere/music a lot
-
I'm definitely getting banjo kazooie nuts and bolts vibes, which is great since I loved that game
-
I caved and ended up getting Tears of The Kingdom. Awaiting the download to finish. :corn
-
I'll probably pick it up today or tomorrow BotW didn't really do anything for me but I can't resist the hype
-
Think I'm going to wait to pick this up until the summer. Feel like this is going to be a good one to have on the road!
-
Finally pick up the game, but still won't be able to play it until tonight, but most likely at some point during the week.
When you give people creative freedom, the first thing they figure out is "can I make a penis out of this" and sure enough, there are already videos of people making penis shape figures with wood and trees. That's why we can have nice things lol Nintendo should've known

:tup Looking good.
I played TOTK for a little over an hour yesterday, and already love the game. Really, really liked the way the game started. We shall see how it continues, but so far so good :)
-
Played it for the last 3 days and sad I have to go back to work today! I made it to my second temple so far and loving it Racking up lots of side quests to do at some point also. New mechanics are fun, new monsters are scary in a good way.
-
So I'm loving TOTK. I barely done any of the main quests, but there is so much to do! Plus the building feature is so much fun to play with. This wasn't me, but gave me a good laugh

I realized this week that TOTK has turned me into a lyft driver for koroks for shit wages
-
I'm probably in the minority here, but the more I see of the building stuff, the less keen I feel to dive deep into TOTK. Just seems like another massive time sink I don't really have time for.
-
I feel similarly to you. I am getting this game for my birthday and believe it will give me hours of enjoyment. I am just not going to commit the level of time most gamers seem to be doing with this game, as they did with its predecessor.
-
As I get older, I appreciate the 20 hour or less gaming experience more and more.
-
Agree. I am about 10 hours in to the Switch remaster of Metroid Prime, which is one of my favorite games ever, and I am ready to get this wrapped up. I've played it a couple times and know it pretty well, and it still feels like I've been playing it for a month.
I'm getting TotK this weekend for my birthday, and I anticipate it will bring me a ton of joy, but I just can't commit the number of hours so many other gamers appear to be doing with this game as they did with BotW.
-
I'm totally happy to spend 500 hours running around hyrule to do everything in this game lol
-

I barely use the mechanic to build actual vehicles or elaborate things. For puzzles that require it, small inventions can be done quick and snappy, usually with a couple of parts or just one. And in some environments, there are pre-made vehicles. The beauty of this game is that it really is a sandbox and most problems can be tackled in several ways. Furthermore, there is an ability you can unlock that makes it way less time intensive in case you do want/need vehicles/large inventions.
BotW to me felt like it had too much bloat and repetetiveness, TotK is much more rewarding and varied.

I am 25 hours in, I've done 2 temples. And I feel largely finished with it. Similar to Elden Ring, I just can't enjoy being 20 hours into a game and knowing there's like 80 left. Games are just too long these days.

Funny. Once I "complete" a game, meaning defeating Ganon for example, I am done, and everyone else in Hyrule who lost all their Cuccos or whatever will just have to deal with it.

I'm the opposite. After doing an open world game binge last year I'm totally in the pocket for a 100+ hour game. Right now I'm 110 or so hours into TOTK and there's still a lot more things on the checklist. I like bouncing around so things don't get stale. I'm also a sucker for upgrading things and boy so I have a ton of equipment with very little maxed out.

That's the exact thing that happened to me with Breath of the Wild, and the last 3 Far Cry games I played. It's really game dependent though. I would have happily taken another hundred hours in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Elden Ring I eventually put 110 hours into, but I felt like I was mastering key gameplay loop throughout the experience. It also helps that Elden Ring's difficulty progression is much steeper than BOTWs for example, so you always feel like you are progressing towards the next big milestone, rather than completing busywork.

BotW took me three and a half years to complete. I treat large games like book series or TV series. Binging it all can be too much.

My problem is if I don't binge it, I get lost because the games are so big. Even taking a week off from Skyrim was enough to make me completely forget everything I was doing.

It's part of the reason I haven't gone back to BotW. When I try, it's just hard to get back into the groove.

Mario RPG remake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r5PJx7rlds
Looks good, I hope they add new stuff to it besides the improved graphics. This is one of my favorite Mario games (might be the favorite).
-
TIL there was a Mario RPG way back when. I'm amazed I never heard of the original given how many of my friends had SNES systems back in the day.
-
If you like turn-based RPGs, and you enjoy Mario games, then you might enjoy it. It's a fun game. The last time I played it when the SNES Classic was released (2017/2018) it was still enjoyable.
-
I've actually never played a turn-based game that I know of. Is that a choose your own story kind of thing?
-
Turn-base RPG (Maybe I'm using the wrong term) refers to games where the battle system is based on taking turns when attacking. Usually players stand on one side while the enemy stands on the other side. You and the enemies take turns when attacking. These type of games usually prioritize strategy rather than fast-paced action.
-

You've never played a classic Final Fantasy or a Pokemon game?
-
Gotcha! Thanks guys.
I've never played a FF game, but I've played Pokemon Blue, Yellow, Stadium, Sliver (the best gen), and Y.
-
I woke up to this amazing news. Super Mario RPG was always in my SNES, and I still have the game. I am excited to see how all characters look in this new design
-

The first 2 paper marios were of a similar vein too.
-
I love Mario RPG's. The Mario & Luigi series in particular and it saddens me the devs behind those games never got to make a switch game.
Thus, this remake looks great to me. I have only played the original for a bit on the snes classic, so this will be a mostly new experience for me.
Overall, a good direct. I am curious about Pikmin, never played one. And the new 2D Mario shows promise. Finally a 2D Mario that doesn't look so generic and that features new gameplay ideas. The New Super Mario series always looked kinds bland.

It is called Super Mario Bros. Wonder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JStAYvbeSHc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JStAYvbeSHc)
My main problem with many Mario games (outside Odyssey) was that in recent time there was often zero originality in it. No original characters, no new enemies, no new zones etc. I really enjoyed Mario 3D World (and Land) despite of it, but I do wish Nintendo is more creative with the Mario ip. This one does finally mix things up for the 2d Mario games.

It is nice to have a collection on all platforms, but I would've liked Twin Snakes (even as a separate Nintendo release if that was the only way). Curious about the MGS3 remake, but I assume that won't be on the Switch (maybe the successor?).

Yeah, I get that. I loved Mario 3D World because I could play with my kids. Also I got more enjoyment out of Bowser's Fury than I anticipated.
Man, the reaction videos to the Mario RPG release are amazing! I love seeing people my age get excited about a remake of a game that was originally released when we were kids.

I just figured they were gonna release RPG through the virtual console. I was not expecting an actual remake. But it completely makes sense. Hopefully it's the same difficulty as the original which was a nice difficulty.

I checked out some of the reactions just now, some of them seem genuine, but my god a good chunk of them are so exaggerated :lol

Took me a little while, but I finally beat Super Mario Odyssey yesterday. Although I was a bit disappointed at first, it slowly grew on me, and the levels kept getting better and better. The boss fights are pretty good, music is great, and the many gameplay options are very fun. I'm still quite fond of the Galaxy games, but this was great.
-
Slowly making my way in to TotK, partially because I am playing with my 5 year old and we are talking about things as I go, and partially because I am just slow. I liked BotW, but didn't love it. It was a pleasant course correction coming off TP and SS. Yet there were elements in the game, and elements I missed, that kept it from being a landmark Zelda game. I don't know how this game will shape up, but I enjoyed the first couple hours of this more than I did the first couple hours of BotW.
-
I ordered Pikmin 4. I really enjoyed the demo and it looks surprisingly good even on the big tv. Never really played one, so it all felt fresh.

I personally think it is way better than BotW. That game felt empty and repetitive after a while. While TotK has some of the same flaws, it has so many absolutely brilliant elements and moments. Much more variety as well. It is my game of the year so far and I doubt anything will top it (despite Starfield, Armored Core, Spidey 2, major Cyberpunk expansion,).
-
I finally finished the main story in TOTK yesterday. I took my time finding shrines, and doing side quests and what not. I'll put it down for a few and will get back to it at some point to continue with the side quests I missed. I don't play enough games to say its the game of year, but damn was it fun. I'm sure that similar to BOTW we will get DLC eventually.
-
I bought a whole bunch of Switch games over the last few months. A lot of sales have been going on (finally), so I bought Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Bayonetta 3, Advance Wars 1+2 re-boot camp, Pokemon Violet, Shin Megami Tensei V, No More Heroes 3, and Paper Mario Origami King. A lot yes, but all in the range of 10-25 euro's in flash sales and some you get more in with trade-in deals in nearby stores. I mean for example Paper Mario new for 12 euros is too good a deal, can't help myself at that point.
I did buy Pikmin 4 at full price via the Nintendo shop with some extra stuff.
Pikmin 4 is fantastic, loads of fun and it is visually quite appealing. If this is Nintendo embracing the Unreal engine, I am all for it.
Others I will check eventually, mainly when I am travelling for work or when I am away to family (which will happen a lot this year).
-
finished pikmin 4 a few weeks ago, fantastic game. been playing through the tales of symphonia remaster since.
what should i play next?
-
what should i play next?
I enjoyed the Metroid Prime Remaster, but I loved the Prime games since they came out.
I am having much more fun with Tears of the Kingdom than I did with BotW. I turned on the Pro HUD and turned off the map quest markers, and that is making a more noticeable difference than I thought it would. Making Zonia devices isn't up my alley, but the abilities are much more enjoyable that stasis, bombs, & magnesis. I am also taking more time exploring the different regions, instead of opening up a map section, then heading for the next map tower, as I did in BotW.

Bomb rush cyber funk is so awesome. I am loving it :metal

i went with Wildfrost and preordered Sea of Stars. gotta keep scratching the jrpg itch

Watched the 15 minute video Nintendo released showing a lot of the new stuff on Super Mario Wonder. It definitely looks like tons of fun, and has lots of nice additions/gameplay to the 2D side-scrolling Mario format.
I'm also excited for the release of the Arkham trilogy on the Switch. I had Arkham Asylum on the PS3 and loved it, but never played the other 2. Watched a buddy play through a good chunk of Arkham City and that game looked great, so I am pretty excited to pick these up.

i also saw that nintendo video for super mario wonder. it's really great to see them adding more stuff to the classic 2d side-scrolling mario game. i've been a mario fan since i was a kid, and it's awesome that they keep coming up with new ideas to keep the gameplay fresh.
one thing that caught my eye in the video was the new power-ups. that super mushroom suit looks pretty cool, and i can see it adding a new layer of strategy to the game. it's always fun to experiment with different power-ups and see how they change the way you play.
the level design also looks top-notch. the variety of environments and obstacles they showed off in the video is impressive. it seems like they're really pushing the creativity when it comes to level design, and that's something i appreciate as a longtime mario player.
i'm also curious about the multiplayer mode they mentioned. playing mario with friends has always been a blast, so i'm looking forward to seeing how that works in super mario wonder. it's always fun to team up with friends to tackle tough levels or compete to see who can finish first.
i have to say i'm pretty excited for super mario wonder. it looks like nintendo is putting a lot of effort into making it a great addition to the mario franchise. i can't wait to get my hands on it and start playing. it's going to be a good time for sure!

Poor Yoshi, putting in some extra work in this game.

Definitely looks like a step up over NSMB. As much as those games were fun, they were a bit sterile in their design. This looks to be stretching its creative legs much more.

SMB on the NES set me on the video game course I've been on for nearly 40 years. I haven't played every single Mario game over the years, and wasn't going to jump on this one, but my 5 year old has been wanting to play more and more on the Switch and I don't have many games she can really play yet. Once I saw this, and saw it had multiplayer, I knew I was going to get this for us.
-
Its been a long time since a mario game really got my attention, but Wonder looks incredible and next level. Its like a fever dream in places and I can't wait to play it.

Completely agree. The more I looked into the more I want to play it.
-
Haven't followed the news about this new Mario, but I'd be interested.
Since I was travelling the last couple weeks, I had been using the switch again. I played through a season of the AEW wrestling game which I thought was pretty cheesy and stupid, but it kept me entertained when I had 15-30 minutes to kill.
I also went back to Breathe of the Wild and found a lot more appreciation for it than I had previously. It helped that I finally decided to pull out a guide and just went through banging out tasks instead of just wandering around and trying to do shrines only and slowly do the main quests. I think that's what I really needed, some direction to really start to see and experience the real beauty of that game. I played this a lot more than I expected to. I am traveling again this week so I expect to get some more hours in.
-
Marc, if you are enjoying BotW you should check out Tears of the Kingdom. For reasons I both can explain, and cannot, I am having much more fun with this one than I did with BotW.
-

Oh, I'm sure it's great. I just didn't love BotW for awhile so me enjoying it now is a change in stance. I honestly just don't have the time to put the 100+ hours necessary into the game since I only play it when traveling. So buying the new one is not likely for me in the near future since I still have a lot of time to put into BotW and I have a Mario game on deck to play next. I wouldn't be surprised if I get TotK in a couple years, hopefully on discount by then :lol (and I'm sure the next switch will be out too). I'm pretty late to the game when it comes to the switch.
-
Disappointed to hear there is no plan for TOTK DLC, though I had a feeling. Nintendo did such a great job with BOTW DLC, and the potential for it in TOTK was much better but I guess the game is already big enough on its own.
-
BotW was a 7-8/10 game for me, TotK easily a 9-10/10. For me it is everything people described BotW to be. Much more to do and way less repetition, fantastic powers/tools that can be used very creatively. You get a couple of powers very early on, but keep discovering new ways to used them and mix them throughout the game. I am fine with no DLC, the game is massive already.
There are a couple of negatives, for sure, but they don't really detract from the experience from me. I actually wonder how blown my mind would be if I never played Breath of the Wild and the world was entirely new to me.
It is weird as a sequel though, some characters act like they have never seen you and some like they have known you for years. And Zelda stole my damn house. It confused me, but I just assume it is time travel stuff that affected the world, or something like that.
-

And you get to built a bigger and better one because of it
I think what Nintendo was going for is that the only characters that recognize Link are those included in the main story line of BOTW (Zoras, Gorons, Purah, Etc.), along with a few others. The house thing was a side quest, so the game implies you never did it and Zelda bought the house from Bolson.
-
i'm neither surprised nor upset that TOTK has no DLC. the game was absolutely perfect as-is and was already 70 bucks. no need to mess with perfection :coolio
-
I turned my Switch Lite on for the first time in a good while over the weekend and saw they were having a sale. They had that new GTA Definitive Edition for 50% off ($30) and I finally caved.
I played GTA-III for about 15 minutes and looks decent, and I'm saving Vice City for my international flight next month. San Andreas looks and plays really well so far though. I haven't played it since my PS2 days, so it's hard to remember what it used to look like, but this version looks great. It also makes me really appreciate the work that went into Los Santos the second time around, and it makes me really excited to see what Rockstar does with VI.
I also really like how the added the weapon wheel for weapon selection. That's such an improvement on the old system.
-
why're y'all so into those nintendo switches? my son doug let me play his once, but that little screen was too small for my taste :lol real men play on pc or xbox, am i right? i guess the price of a switch can't be beat though when your girlfriend's boyfriend is buying them for you :rollin just kidding folks, i'm just jealous i don't have much time for gaming these days since i have four kids and a job, enjoy your gaming but don't forget to balance it with some real-world adventures too!
-
I almost exclusively play the switch in the dock station (plugged into a 55" TV). The only times I play handheld is when I'm on a trip and I take the switch with me, which lately I've been leaving behind anyways.
-
I play docked at home. And I use tabletop mode with a controller when travelling for work (in long train rides / hotels). I bought the OLED model because that screen works a bit better for table top mode.
These days I am not finding handhelds super comfortable anymore, after a day of work I want a neutral posture. But the Switch Light is a very appealing little device for sure.
Also, I used to think the Switch was kinda unusable on my 55 inch TV, but I found out that somehow the screen was not aligned. Noticed this when the huds of several games weren't totally on screen. At 95 screen size instead of 100 it looks way better. Obviously still a early 10's tablet chip, but properly setting it up for my tv made a significant difference.
-
The Nintendo Direct from a few days ago was a bit underwhelming, but the two things I am excited about is that Mario RPG has new features for the remastered version, and the new Contra. I love Contra 3 from SNES.
Also, I played the Prince of Persia I think in Xbox 360, and I enjoyed it. I'll keep an eye out for the new one :corn
-
I wish they would have announced an entirely new F-zero game or a remaster/re release of GX. Playing the SNES f-zero with tons of other cars on the screen isn't speaking to me
-
I loved Another Code on the DS back in the day and never played the sequel. I also never played this Paper Mario and it looks very good. Never played Luigi's Mansion 2, but that port looks less high effort. Anyways, those are three games I am interested in.
I think Mario Wonder will be the last major Switch release by Nintendo. I assume the Switch will enter a release schedule more akin to the late days of the 3DS (which was exactly like this, a lot of enhanced/changed up ports and/or remakes, with some more low profile releases here and there).
As someone who thinks a lot of Switch years were quite disappointing, I actually think this year is amazing as a whole. But next years will be in the domain of the Switch successor (and given that the Switch will be 7 years old then, it is about time).

This I still struggle with. It doesn't feel like the switch was released that long ago. I honestly have no desired for a new console, but it feels more and more likely that some of the games we been waiting for will be released when the new console drops (Metroid Prime 4 for example).

I disagree on the Switch. I think developers have made great use of it's limited power but it's time for something new, it's getting pretty long in the tooth.

I'll keep an eye out for the new one :corn
small disagree here, i thought the direct was so amazing. i love seeing endless ads for smash bros amiibo and an endless parade of rpg remakes and farm sims

Ever since I was a young child, the allure of farming beckoned to me like a siren's song. The thought of waking up at dawn, surrounded by the serenity of a vast countryside, tending to crops and animals, filled my mind with excitement and purpose. But my parents, trapped in a rigid mindset, dismissed my dreams of becoming a farmer as a mere fantasy. They were fixated on the idea of a stable corporate job for me, one that they believed would ensure financial security and societal validation.
I vividly remember the day they mocked my aspirations, calling farming a "backward" and "unrealistic" career choice. Their words stung, and I buried my dreams deep within, fearing their disapproval. However, my love for farming never waned; it only grew stronger as I sought solace in farm simulation games. These games, like Stardew Valley and Farming Simulator, allow me to step into the boots of a virtual farmer and cultivate the life I've always desired.
In the virtual expanse of Stardew Valley, I till the soil, plant diverse crops, raise happy animals, and engage with a charming community of characters. The meticulous attention to detail in the game, from the changing seasons to the intricate farm layouts, mirrors the farming experience I had envisioned for myself. It's a bittersweet substitute for the reality I was denied, but it fuels my passion and ignites a spark of hope that someday I might find a way to live my dream.
To those who doubt the authenticity of my love for farm sims, I implore you to understand the deep-seated longing that fuels my enthusiasm. These games aren't just a pastime for me; they are a lifeline, a way to hold on to the dreams that were once belittled and ridiculed. Farm simulation games have become the canvas on which I paint the portrait of my unrealized ambition, bringing me closer to the farming world I yearned for as a child, even if only in a virtual realm.

Well as someone who was very late to the switch, I'm currently too far behind to have any desire to get a new switch 2. I'm sure it'll be a solid new console, but I'm just not ready for it personally. That's OK though.

Contra is one of my all time favorite games. I hadn't watched the Nintendo Direct, but I went back and checked it out because of the mention of Contra. Definitely excited for that new Contra game, looks pretty awesome!

i hate being negative but i never got the contra love. it's just running and gunning!

For me, it was less about the game itself and more about the endless hours of fun my childhood friends and had sucking ass at it.
Paperboy NES gets an honorable mention :lol

lol this is really fair! i have my share of titles i could say reflect that myself. thanks for clarifying!
to be clear, for me one of those is definitely Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (DX) because it had the Chaos (pronounced Chows, not kay-oss)

I like contra. I just always sucked at it :lol

I had not intended to buy a Switch but ended up getting one summer of 2020 for the kids to keep them from going bonkers being trapped at home due to Covid (ok, it was partially for me too). It ended up being a great purchase. Despite only having a handful of games, we play it now as much as we ever have. It still feels new and fresh enough that I cannot imagine investing in a new console any time soon.
Unless of course that will be the only way to play Metroid Prime 4.
-
I love my Switch but if I'm gonna buy more software for it I kinda need to know when the next thing is coming along and that whatever I get is going to be compatible.

yeah, i've been reading up on the switch 2 rumors lately. for starters, it's pretty exciting to think about a successor to the switch, especially since the original switch has been such a game-changer in the world of gaming. one of the big rumors floating around is that the switch 2 might have upgraded hardware. this isn't a huge surprise considering how technology advances, but it's still interesting to speculate on what kind of improvements we might see. better graphics, faster processing, and maybe even support for 4k resolution are some things that come to mind. if they can pull that off in a portable console, it would be quite the feat. another rumor that's got me intrigued is the possibility of a revamped joy-con design. don't get me wrong, i love the joy-cons, but they're not without their issues. the drift problem has been a thorn in the side of many switch owners, so if nintendo can address that and maybe make them more comfortable to hold for long gaming sessions, it would be a huge win. speaking of controllers, there's also talk of improved vr support. now, that's a bit of a wildcard for me. vr is cool, but it hasn't really taken off in a big way, at least not on consoles. if nintendo can find a way to make it more accessible and enjoyable, it could be a game-changer. one thing that i hope nintendo doesn't change too much is the switch's unique form factor. the ability to switch between handheld and docked modes is what sets the switch apart, and i hope they keep that in the switch 2. maybe they'll refine it, make it even smoother, but i'd hate to see them abandon it.
of course, there's the games, and that's always the crux of the matter, right?. nintendo has always been known for its killer first-party titles, and i can't wait to see what they have in store for the switch 2. i'm hoping for a new zelda, mario, and maybe even some fresh ips to keep things interesting.
it's definitely fair to be concerned about backwards compatibility tho. ninty is usually ok about it but i hesitate that they are going to take one from the (evil) corporations like microsuck or kony and pull a fast one on us. here's hoping they don't! :natalieportman:

The rumor I saw was that Switch 2 would be as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4.
Surprised I haven't seen anyone talk about the leaked emails showing microsoft wanting to buy Nintendo. Its not clear how realistic that option is/was, it seems more like just an idea in a written email about potential future plans. Hopefully it never happens. Nintendo needs to stay put doing what they do. They've got a niche market that works really well for what they do.

I don't think the Japanese government would allow that transaction to take place even if Microsoft had the money.

Can't imagine Nintendo would want to be sold either, but the fact it was discussed is interesting. Especially since Microsoft is a big buyer right now in the market.

I saw the leaked emails, the rumor that MS has wanted to buy Nintendo has been around for a while now. I don't think real world it'll ever happen, they are barely getting this activision sale through.
As far as power is concerned PS4/Xbone seems about right. Nintendo hasn't really been keen in keeping up with Sony and MS in terms of hardware and raw power but I would hope that the new Switch is at least as power as the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck has some surprisingly good performance and continues to impress me every time I pick it up.

Okay, thinking about getting immersed in one of these games. I have never played either, and keep in mind we are talking about the Switch version. Which one would you recommend first?
The Witcher 3 or Skyrim
-
If I remember right the Skyrim release is better on Switch than W3. I personally love both games but they are very different. To put it simply Skyrim gave me the sense that I can go out in the world and find quests and adventures along the way, W3 is where you're in an open world but ultimately living through Geralt's eyes.
Personally I'd choose Skyrim but I could also make a strong case for W3.
-
I think Skyrim is maybe a bit better as a handheld / session title. And it is less compromised than The Witcher 3 (if talking non-modded Skyrim, mostly because Skyrim is an older game). Both are good ports. The Witcher 3 on Switch got years of patches as well, it is a high effort port (but the Switch is still the Switch).
Skyrim is more freeform do whatever quest you want (ignore the main quest) and create your own character. The Witcher 3 is a massive three act epic (with added acts of excellent DLC), experienced through a relatively defined character.
The Witcher 3 is one of my all times favorites, but I love Skyrim as well.

Ended up going with the Witcher 3 Complete Edition. The physical was on sale on amazon for $35. Just sat down with it last night, and really enjoying it so far.

Super mario wonder is pretty cool so far.
and how appropriate that now that I dick around with psychedelics that they would make a mario game with an acid trip mechanic :lol
When you take that wonder flower in the game, shit gets crazy, lol The trees start dancing and singing and shit :lol :lol

Didn't even realized the game was already out. I'll probably wait until the holidays to get it, since I know I wont have time to enjoy it until then anyways
-
i am enjoying super mario wonder but i can't help but feel like some of the acid trip sequences are a little... non-sequitur?
-
I really enjoy Mario Wonder, it is very varied and gets better the further you progress. I just progressed through world 3, but did not complete all levels prior (meaning not all coins, flags and seeds, I will eventually revisit some for completion). Easily the best 2d platformer by Nintendo in decades.
I am also glad Nintendo isn't sticking to their "basic Mario" worlds/design anymore. A lot of recent Mario games all had the same enemies/worlds/look etc. Especially around the time Mario 3d Land, Mario 3d World, Mario Luigi Paper Jam etc. came out.

Mario RPG remake looks amazing! I might pick it up this weekend
