Opeth's light side?
« on: January 01, 2011, 07:47:21 PM »
I've been listening to Opeth for almost two years now, and find them really amazing, but the thing is I've never got deep into them. My favorite track by them, and also the first I heard, was To Bid You Farwell, and a couple of days ago I heard Windowpane and I really enjoyed it too. So since most people in here are deeply into prog metal, I was wondering if anyone could do me the biggest favor ever and make a list of Opeth's song that lean more towards the lighter side of the band (what I mean is that don't have the extreme metal in it).

This is a playlist of MellOpeth I made:

Coil
To Rid the Disease
Atonement
To Bid You Farewell
Harvest
In My Time of Need
Face of Melinda
A Fair Judgment (end is a bit more metal, but no growls, so I say it counts)
Isolation Years

He said no metal elements so that's why I didn't include AFJ. There's definitely parts of that song that are just kvlt, albeit no growls. But if we were including songs like that we'd have to include the second half of Watershed also.

Well, metal without the growls can work if it's only a fragment of the song, like in To Bid You Farewell where there's that kind of heavy part without growls.

Yeah, I was simply figuring that most of the song represents the softer side of Opeth and thought it would fit for him, assuming he can deal with a bit of metal icing on a mostly mellow cake.

Quick!  Someone photoshop a picture of Mikael with an ice cream cake pointing at the icing and making an angry metal face!

Porcelain Heart on mellotrons.  Nowhere near as good as the original.  I think I've listened to it once.

I like Mellotron Heart quite a bit more than Porcelain Heart actually. I think because A. it's shorter, and B. the main riffs don't sound quite so awkward, particularly the intro.
