Finally saw credits on Baldur's Gate 3, what a game. About 100 hours to beat the thing and there were still a few loose ends I didn't tie up. Top 10 game of all time.

Yup, absolute all-timer. By the end, I was ready to move on, but I think that's more because I have so little time for games these days and was playing BG3 for like four months straight. :lol What was interesting for me is that even though there are so many different choices you can make, I was actually really happy with mine and I'm not sure I'd change much in a subsequent playthrough. I was just super satisfied with how it all played out.

I felt the same way, I don't have a ton of time for gaming and I've been playing BG3 for months now, I never felt like it was a chore though. I'm pretty happy with all my choices as well, I'm looking forward to replaying sometime in the next few years or so.

Incredible game and actually made me like tactical turn based combat which is a genre I had zero interest in previously. I never do new game plus and the like but after my first 120+ hour playthrough I immediately made a new character and did another 80+ hour playthrough.

About halfway through Obra Dinn. Been picking away at it slowly but as of yesterday feel like I'm on a little bit of a roll. It does succeed at making me feel very stupid, mind you. Good game. Reasonably confident I'll have it knocked out by the time Shadow of the Erdtree rolls around, although it might be the sort of thing that would act well as a breather when SotE gets to be too much.

Had an urge playing Fallout. I have F76 since a couple of years but tried it two times but lost interest. I thought the MP experience ruined the immersion and with all the weird player buildings you encuntered.
Saw that they now have a singleplayer mode so I gave that a chance. The fact that they actually have a monthly fee 15 Euros only to play SP is so shitty but of course probably lucrative for them I guess. I tried it though but instantly cancel my subscription in order to only play one month.
It's alright though and feels a bit closer to what I would call a Fallout game. I got my fix, we'll see how long it lasts.

When I was doing my Fallout playthrough a couple years I stopped short of F76, I should eventually give it a shot.

I started playing through the GTA games and I'm at GTA3 now and that game is a lot harder than I remember, unforgiving at some parts.

You really realize how bad controls used to be when you go back to games like that. It almost makes them unfun to play at times. Vice City was an improvement, and San Andreas really started to refine them.

I recently went to play Goldeneye for the first time in 20ish years, and I couldn't believe how awful it was. It's hard to believe that my friends and I spent hundred of hours playing that game.

Yea, that was my first thought as well. I'm playing the emulated PS2 version this go around since the GTA3 games are better on PS2 and here is a short list of things I thought were in GTA3 but aren't:

- No mini map
- No free look while walking
- No free aim
- No markers for paint n spray or ammunation, you just gotta remember where that shit is
- No difficulty settings

Did you play the Goldeneye re-release on PC/xbox?

The no free look or aim was the worst. The closest we had was when using the sniper rifle.

No mini map? I'm 99% sure GTA-III had a mini map in the lower corner.

I played it on an OG N64 with one of these controllers:

Sorry, I meant no actual map. You're right the minimap is there on the bottom left.

The Definitive Edition re-release added that feature to both III and Vice City on the Switch, and it was a very welcomed addition. I haven't played San Andreas yet. I don't remember if that was a feature in the original release or not.

Yeah, those old games are really difficult to play these days.  They just don't feel right with the controls.

I got to Chapter 9 of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and then decided to take a break. It's an amazing game - Presentation, combat, characters, variety, etc. However, it also meanders a bit and there was an especially egregious example of that in Chapter 8 that made me want to take a break. :lol

Without spoiling anything, basically you go to the place with a bunch of mini-games. The game makes you run around and try like a half dozen of them as part of the main quest. When that's done, one of your squad mates goes missing. You find a guy who says he can help you only if you win a Chocobo race. Then you go to a town and find the Chocobo is sick. Then you have to go talk to three people who each have their own side quest for you before they give you Chocobo food. It felt like Inception - A side quest within a side quest. :rollin

I finally finished Obra Dinn; got stuck for ages at the end because there was an Indian guy I was convinced was Swedish, lol. Woops.

Also, re: Goldeneye... One of my all time favorite games, but it has not aged well. I can still play it now and enjoy it because the whack-ass controls are permanently seared into my brain, but if you didn't play it A LOT, or at all, at the time? Whack. Ass. Controls. It hasn't aged well in that regard at all. Early 3D graphics have also aged like boiled piss, which doesn't help. I would, however, argue that the level design* and mission objective structure (different objectives on different difficulty levels!!!) hold up really rather well

Man, playing Fallout 3 and 4 (non-modded, Xbox Series) painfully lays bare how big of a downgrade Starfield was. Fallout 3 actually aged really well. It surprisingly looks appealing on the Series X on a modern screen (moreso than say Fallout 76) and is just a compelling and immersive game. Fallout 4 is more streamlined but also has that great feel of exploration and plenty of fun characters and quests.

I tried Fallout 76 and fun can be had, but trying it next to 3 and 4 also really emphasizes what is missing. I think 76 is best if you have.a friend to play it with. It does have proper NPCs and quests now, but I feel it is at odds with the online component, greatly affecting immersion in some sections.

But overall super impressed with Fallout 3. Dialouge and world building is very Bethesda, but in a good way, right balance between silly and seriousness. And I feel the tone of the TV show aligns with it very well.

If visuals were equal between all of them, one would think the order that they made the games was exactly flipped around to be honest.

So no I don't think Bethesda has been too stuck in their ways, I think they have lost them.

I grew up with the N64 and honestly, most of those games have aged really poorly. Almost all N64 games on the Switch online services are not a good time for me outside of nostalgia. Even those 2d 3d platformers like Yoshi and Kirby, it looks and feels stiff and off compared to what came before and after.

To my surprise, I did not grow up with the PS1 but I find many of those games to have aged better (started playing them late teens/early twenties vs being a kid below 10 for the N64). Maybe because many PS1 games were more basic/limited but also not in that weird proto-ps2 phase (good ideas that would be greatly improved upon the next gen). And some also more story/puzzle/strategy based (Final Fantasy, MGS, FF tactics, Vagrant Story etc.).

I will say that I completed Goldeneye fully last year and had a great time in the end. One thing that is still above current standards in some regards is bullet impact on enemies and how run and gun feels. Also, Aztec on 00 is an experience I will never forget, akin to a section in a From Software game (Sens Fortress in DS1 comes to mind, I can probably still draw a map a decade later). Brutal and there is nothing really like it even to this date.

After watching Fallout, I've had the cravings to play Fallout 3.  Cool to hear you say it aged well, because that was a worry. Not sure I'll do it anyway, but it's been on my mind.

On a side note, I've been really loving my Halo 1 playthrough with my girlfriend.  We completed The Flood mission last weekend which brought back lots of memories.  But talk about dated, this game plays incredibly well for being old.  https://www.youtube.com/shorts/p987D22cuVM That's Level 4 Part 1 highlights, these missions start to get really long so hard to squeeze them into a single youtube short.  Eventually I'll have a playlist for the full game playthrough.

Interesting. I haven't played Fallout 3 since it came out and it was an unpatched pirated version. I loved it but I've wondered how well or unwell it aged. I remember the standard shooting mechanics weren't that good even back then. It was always satisfying to splatter an enemy's head in VATs though.

I wonder if there are any good big mods for it like the one I downloaded a few months ago for New Vegas.

Did you play (I think it was called) the anniversary version with the updated graphics? I replayed the first game a few years ago and I remember booting up and thinking the graphics were dated. There was a key you could hit that would instantly change the graphics to the original games so I hit that and wow, that was dated :lol

Yeah, we are playing the Anniversary edition, so that makes sense.  But still, the gameplay is good.

I liked 1 but didn't love it. Still haven't played 2, but I'm curious about it. 3 was fun but I haven't replayed it in ages, and I didn't have the GOTY version back then, so guess my surprise when I couldn't beat it due to the DLC bs. New Vegas is amazing. 4 and 76 I haven't bothered with.
