I've flip-flopped a thousand times on these two epics from FII. I think LitS is more consistent throughout, but it does have some vocal problems, both with James and the other dude, but ToT's best parts are stronger.
Which do you like better?
-
They are close, sure, but I think that ToT is overall the best song between them. It somehow better delivers the feeling, the mood the song is built on... Moreover, the lyrical content of ToT is among the best of all time (speaking of DT).
-
Trial of Tears, because Lines in the Sand is the worst Dream Theater song in my opinion.

I am not sure how one could come to such an opinion. May I ask what is so bad about it?

Lines in The Sand
-
Trial of Tears, one of THE greatest DT songs ever :hefdaddy
-
Trial of tears
Not even a contest.
-
When I first got into DT (back when FII was the new album), I would have said Lines in the Sand, but now it's Trial of Tears and its not even close.
-
Trial of Tears by a parsec.

I'm pretty much the exact opposite. Hearing some damn fine live performances of LitS has really turned me around on it.
-
Trial Of Tears for me.
-
Lines in the Sand is great, but Trial of Tears is amazing.
-
Man, I really don't know. LITS has some AWESOME musical bits, and is very, very solid. Trial of Tears as a song is just amazing, and has a great atmosphere.
-
Lines In The Sand is one of my all time favorite songs, so that.
-
TOT
-
Trial of Tears.
They both are amazing, but I feel that ToT builds the emotion better and finishes much stronger. It's a top 10 DT song for me, and LiTS is still top 20. Both amazing songs.
-
Trial of Tears by a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG shot.
-
For as long as it's raining on the streets of New York City, I gotta choose Trial of Tears.
-
Lines in the Sand by a mile. The LaBrie/Pinnick combo is killer.

I can answer that. Nothing.
LITS, by a nipple.

LITS, by a nipple.
This, and it's not even on a chilly day.
-
No matter how much I try, ToT hasn't "clicked" with me yet. LitS it is.
-
Hell's Kitchen / Lines In The Sand > Trial Of Tears > Lines In The Sand
I think the moral of this story is that Falling Into Infinity has some damn good songs on it.

He's saying that if you include Hell's Kitchen as an intro to LITS, then it's better than TOT, but if not, then it's worse.
-
um. im confused.
what does train of thought have to do with this thread?

LOL RICKY YOURE SO FUNNY
-
Lines in the Sand for me. Trial of Tears has a good beginning, but goes nowhere pretty quickly. I can't stand the, "open up, open up, not much better than the man you hate" part, the guitar solo is completely unnecessary and does nothing for the song, the quiet part after the guitar solo is too long and drags on and on..... and, "IT'S RAINING" is just annoying.
Contrast that with: awesome vocal melodies, an amazingly soulful, melodic, tasteful guitar solo, killer guitar/ keyboard chords and just a great, unique feel overall. Plus, the lyrics in Lines in the Sand are way better and more meaningful than Trial of Tears.
All in my opinion, of course.

LOL RICKY YOURE SO FUNNY
um,
am i missing something?
i'm not the smartest guy in the world, but i dont understand why you threw in train of thought out of nowhere.

Might I politely ask you to stop spamming?
-
Not sure if serious....but if it'll stop you, TOT = Trial of Tears
-
OH.
*embarrassed*
im just so used to seeing the acronym TOT stand for Train of Thought.
-
Lines in the Sand. So hard.
-
Trial of Tears.
-
Lines in the Sand is my 7th favourite Dream Theater song. Trial of Tears is my 17th favourite Dream Theater song.
-
so you like trial of tears better?
-
:neverusethis:
-
Damn, tough call. Gotta go with Trial of Tears, but LITS is awesome too. Both are probably top ten DT songs.
-J
-
I voted too close, honestly it depends on the mood.
Voices and these two are almost the only thing I spin from DT nowadays, I'm in a disinterest phase right now :-[
-
I bottled it and went for too close to call. Love them both and consider them both standouts on a very good album.
-
Both solid, but I like Lines In The Sand better.
...but [LitS] does have some vocal problems, both with James and the other dude...
Wait...what?

I wouldn't call them 'problems' but the Kings X guy's backing vocals are kinda annoying in my book.
I like ToT miles more than LitS, and not just because of the vocals.
-
I preferred "Lines in the Sand" by a little bit for the longest time, but over the past few years, I've grown to love "Trial of Tears" more. Both are top 10 DT songs, either way. :tup :tup
-
To close to decide...
-
Lines In The Sand, because of the epic bridge and the epic solo INSIDE of that epic bridge!
-
I'm gonna go with Trial of Tears. I'm just not a huge fan of LiTS after the stream of consciousness section unless I'm in the right mood. Plus, once I found out the last vocal section before the final chorus was taken out of the studio version, I can't listen to it anymore without it feeling complete, and there's no live version that feels definitive. The guitar solo's still extraordinary though.
ToT just engages me the whole way through. I love trippy ambient stuff with an edge. And the lyrics are cool. More than anything, ToT's underrated when it comes to great moments. Basically everything starting with the keyboard solo is one cool moment after another. The electric guitar under the solo building, the explosive end of the solo, coming back into the clean guitar, the drum fill to bring in the band, the doubled vocals, the way they end, the big synth, the big chorus, the piano and acoustic guitar overdubs, and the cool little bass solo thing to take it out. And really cool things happen before then too.
-
Trial of Tears by a neutrino.
-
Lines is average with some awesome parts. Never has it been one of my favorite songs on FII. Trial is just , well, close to epic.
-
OH.
*embarrassed*
im just so used to seeing the acronym TOT stand for Train of Thought.
It stands for both.
Context is important.
-
Trial Of Tears.
-
Trial of Tears I guess.
-
Trial of Tears.
Both sit in the 1&2 spots of my FII list. Amazing songs. :hat
-
Lines in the Sand.Trial of Tears is too quiet :P
-
Trial of Tears easily.
-
Trial of Tears is my favorite Petrucci guitar solo and one of my all time fav DT songs. Got to go with ToT, though LitS is damn good as well.
-
Trial of Tears is my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite DT songs overall. No hesitation in my choice...
-
Definitely Lines in the Sand... dat solo
