Thats ok, threads get buried pretty quickly. :lol
There isn't really too much in the Palladium area. Theres a couple restaurants, maybe a bar, but I can't really think of any good meeting place.

I'm in.
Also, I'm moving this over to the Concerts/Set-Lists subforum and stickying it over there...

Make a list in the OP.

I'll be there.

I'll be there.
Also just found out Richard Christy plays in the opening act.
:metal

Wait... wtf? Did the two threads get merged and un-stickied?
I guess it doesn't need to be stickied... just trying to figure out if somebody else did it or if I'm just losing my mind...

yup, I had a few beers with kingshmegland and his wife at Armsby Abbey before we went to see rumborak's DT tribute band play and it was a very cool place. It's also about a tenth of a mile from the Palladium :hat
-
I'm in! Great beers and a stones throw from the Palladium!!!!! Though Axe, we'd need to get a head count cause on a saturday night, that place will be packed. But worth the beer!!! :metal
-
I'm seriously considering going to this show. If I do, I want to have a beer with you guys!
-
... on a saturday night, that place will be packed...
Idunno about you, but I plan on heading over to the concert by nighttime... ;)
(I assume the meetup will be late afternoon)

LOL. The place is small but has beer and food to die for. Looks like a DT survivor series. Who can drink who under the table. i love having beers I can't pronounce, Right Axe? ;D
-
indeed, all kinds of good stuff there from Belgium. I was planning on seeing if anyone wanted to head over early in the afternoon to stake out some table space. If we call them maybe they can set aside a few tables for us (especially since I hope they wouldn't be too crowded at say 2-3 in the afternoon)

A headcount would be the right thing to do. They were reserving tables so that might be a very good plan.
And Tick, beer it is! *clink*
-
I am trying to find a way to make it work, especially if a west coast show doesn't show up
-
If the meet up is at a bar... I'm assuming I won't be able to get in since I'm still a little over a year away from the legal drinking age. :p
Unless I can still get in even though I'm not 21? Not sure how that works....
-
Is this place a seated deal or just a wide open floor? I'm just wondering.
-
It's a restaurant with tables and seats. All ages can go in there.
-
This sounds awesome, I'm totally excited to have a few beers with you guys. good beers at that too!
-
My friend and I are going, and I think I can convince him to join in a meetup as well.
-
I'll probably be bringing a friend as well
-
im there for sure!!! cant wait.i will be going with 1 other person so pencil me in for 2 people,let us know when we will be hooking up for some adult beverages :tup :hefdaddy :hat

He was talking to me (my question about the bar).
Palladium has general admission and some seating I'm pretty sure. Theres an upstairs and a downstairs, and the downstairs has the seating. I think. Its been awhile since I've been there.
-
I went there years ago to see inflames, and we sat in a balcony in back that wasnt too bad
-
There is an upstairs balcony. lower floor has a few booths, but the rest of the floor is mainly standing only.
good venue to see a show. Beers are usually $4-5.
If you guys want a place to meet up, there is a bar called Irish Times right across the street from the Palladium. There is also a parking lot across the street which usually charges between $7-15 to park.
-
I can't fucking wait for this. When do tickets go on sale, Friday?
-
I will be there, I just know I will!!!! :metal
PUT ME ON THE LIST!!!!! :biggrin:
-
If we're adding plusses, I'll be +2
-
I'm actually not sure if the under 21 crowd can get in at Armsby Abbey, I know when I went last weekend I was carded at the door.

You know what, you're right axe. I forgot about that.
-
Somebody should just call the place or ask about it next time they're around. Remember that we'll probably be doing this at like 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon... A lot of bars only card at night, especially if they have food service during the day.

Cool beans. What kind of venue is this? Standing, seating, etc...?
-
I'd be surprised if this show sells out anytime soon. Considering many already spent for them with Maiden, plus Rush is coming and charging a left nut for tickets.
Also, I am shocked there are still tickets for Transatlantic's NYC show, and that place only holds about 700 peeps. :omg:
I also see on the Palladium site that they sell there tickets at all FYE locations.
-

I'd be surprised if it DOESN'T sell out quickly. It's only a 2,000 capacity venue, and DT has a pretty big following in the Boston area.

I think your going to be surprised. It will be interesting to see. I say there will be tickets around for a few weeks at least.
I thought Transatlantic would sell out in minutes and there are still tickets.

I just picked up 3 tickets for myself and a couple family members! :metal :tick2:
-
good thing I saw Zepp mention getting tickets on Facebook, otherwise I would have forgotten :lol
-
Not that its a huge deal but I noticed tickets 3 days ago were 35 and 38 at the door. Today they were 38 and 40 at the door. I found that a bit odd that the price changed. :tick2:
-
Got a pair.
-
is anyone driving from nyc, long island or CT to the worcester show? want to split gas/food costs?
-
Got mine at 10:30. Easy and painless. First dt show for me!!! Maybe we could have a poll to see where to meet up before the show for some adult beverages. Look forward to meeting the faithful dt fans . July cant come fast enough!!! :rollin :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
-
Cell phones allowed?
-
Do you think DT will play a normal show in this club, or do you all think we can expect some surprises? I'm exited by the thought of then maybe doing something a little different.
-
Got a pair.
I also have a pair, and I bought some tickets too. :P
-
So, my wife is now undecided on whether she wants to attend.
I have a ticket I paid $45 for, that I'd be willing to sell for $35 if anyone doesn't have one yet . . . PM me if interested.

Cell phones allowed?
yes

we might have to call Armsby Abbey ahead of time, it looks like with guests we're at almost 25 people and this place isn't that big :lol
-
I'm tellin ya, Irish Times, right across the street.....
-
this place is about two blocks away and I'd be very willing to wager has a much better tap list, although with the size of the prospective group we may have to switch to Irish Times or have two different meetups or something
-

Axe, I've been to irish Times before. Not so bad. We can always do a little beer hopping. ;D

2 meetups? C'mon, there has to be a bar big enough to house 25 people? Just pick one that is big enough.

There really isn't any place to tailgate. The palladium is in downtown worcester. There are tiny little parking lots and street parking, but not really any place to hold a gathering.
-
from what I saw definitely no place to tailgate. I'll probably end up hitting Armsby Abbey for a while first, and then moving on to Irish Times, and then having the official meetup there. I just can't pass up stopping at a place like Armsby Abbey for a beer or two, they always have a phenomenal tap list

I've never been to the Palladium. How is it set up? I hear it holds 2000. That's a lot. Is it set up like The Strand was in Providence, or maybe The Roxy in Boston?
-

It's been a ltime since I went so I cant remember the set up. I hope it's not like the Roxy in Boston TAC cause it had the raised dance floor in the front of the floor which made it imposible to see from the back. Though, that place is made more for dancing than a rock show.
-
Tix came in the mail today.
The Palladium is a Theater. You have your stage, then your GA floor. On either side, there are two sets of stairs and beneath these are the VIP entrance. Moving back, you have a series of slightly elevated levels with seating areas and a bar as well as the merch area. In the main hallway, you have side entrances to the balcony, which has fold out seats. There is a slightly lower level with bathrooms and food behind the bar. Above that is the second (smaller) stage and house bar. Musicians will often hang here and talk to fans. This is right near the front entrance and box office. Outside, along the side of the venue is where the vans will park and is usually the place to be to autographs and such after the gig. Every show I've ever been to here (which is a shit ton) the musicians come and hang for pics and all that in this area for those that didn't have a VIP package or get on anyone's guest list.
That's the best lament layout I can give anyone. I can't really compare it to any other venue that I've been to. It's fairly unique in that sense. But it is THE venue in New England to see a fair sized gig yet still have that intimate feel. I've seen all my favorite artists here and have never been let down. It just sucks that its in Worcester, the asshole of Massachusetts :P
-
Thanks Myke, sounds a lot like The Strand in Providence, which is where all of these type of tours used to hit in the 90's. They now all go to The Palladium.
-
And the sound quality is usually pretty good. I didn't need earplugs when I saw Opeth there
-
I still have a ticket I'll sell for $35 if anyone needs one.
-
At these off shows, does DT play some of their fun stuff? TTY/Freebird for example.
-
The last time DT played there was this:
Train of Thought - Summer 2004 American Tour
8/21/2004 Worcester, MA
Venue: The Palladium
Other Act(s): Blinded By Noon opened
Set List:
1. Metropolis part 1
2. This Dying Soul
3. Peruvian Skies
4. War Inside My Head
5. The Test That Stumped Them All
6. A Fortune in Lies
7. Endless Sacrifice
8. improv jam
9. Through My Words
10. Fatal Tragedy
11. Pull Me Under (warped version)
12. Stream of Consciousness
13. The Spirit Carries On
14. Solitary Shell
15. About to Crash (reprise)
16. Losing Time/Grand Finale
~~~encore~~~
17. In the Name of God
Sadly to say, they probably won't play "In The Name Of God", "Solitary Shell", "Pull Me Under", "Peruvian Skies", or possibly "Metropolis" this go around, but that still leaves a LOT of songs from the current rotation that they could play, which will most definitely include the four tunes from BC&SL they've played so far.
-Marc.
-
That was one of the BEST setlists they've ever played. I wouldn't be surprised to see Metropolis though. It on the current tour master list. Although it was played as part of a medley in '08.
-
Yes, and it was my first DT show! So hopefully this time we'll get Erotomania/Voices, Dance of Eternity/One Last Time, The Count, and the extended version of Hollow Years. I don't care as much about the first 3 tracks of BC&SL but I'm sure those will be played as well, along with possibilities of Forsaken, Prophets of War, Beyond This Life, Sacrificed Sons, and Mirror/Lie which are some of the other songs on this year's master list that weren't played in '04.
I gotta wonder though, does MP consider a show in Worcester to be close enough to count as a show in Boston? If that was the case, I'll need to look up the last setlist from Boston . . .
-
I would assume that some of what was played in Boston (TDOE/OLT, Sacrificed Sons, Hollow Years, and ITNOG, POW) will NOT be played in Worcester. I can see repeated songs with ANTR and TCOT though.
I sure hope they play TCOT, I missed the last show.
-
I wouldn't be shocked if that was repeated, but any of the older material will not be.
-
I would appreciate it if someone would answer a few questions for me...
1. How much seating is actually in this venue?
2. How many parts of the venue have seating and where is best?
3. How early would I have to arrive at the venue to acquire a seat?
4. Are the seats spread out or with tables or in rows?
I really would prefer to sit and relax as apposed to being close to the stage. Been there done that and being close is not important to me.
I thought the whole floor was standing, and the balcony is where you can sit.
I can live with that, I just want to know what the seating is in the balcony and how early I would need to show up to get a seat up there?
-
Show up at doors and you'll get a seat. Although I don't understand sitting at shows. I tried it at the Palladium once and it was just too far for my liking. There is also limited seating behind the GA floor in front of the bar...some booths and such, but it goes quick.
Well, I stood packed like a sardine in NYC for Transatlantic and it was a bit much after over 3 hours. I figure, how far away could you be in a 2000 seat venue? Plus I will have a 21 year old nephew with me who has Williams disease(not going to go into explaining that) but it might be easier to be seated.
-
Although I don't understand sitting at shows. I tried it at the Palladium once and it was just too far for my liking.
When I was in my early 20's and was going to only 10 - 15 shows per year, I felt the same way. But as I approach 30 and generally now hit at least 30 - 40 concerts per year (many of which involve long drives to and from the venue), sitting has become much more appealing.
Will you see over heads from a booth or are you better off in the balcony?
Yes, I ask a lot of questions but I want to have a plan when I walk in.
-
I have a question. Is the main floor slanted downward torards the stage?
-
There's the main pit area in front of the stage. Then it goes up a couple steps and that's where the sound board usually is (small standing area in front of it). Then there is a small standing area behind the sound board. The up a couple more steps are the booths and the bar area. Unless your under 5ft tall, you'll have a good view from the bar area and the booths.
Hope that kind of makes sense......
-
Yeah great. Thanks Serp!
-
A little over 2 months to go! Can't wait! :metal
-
First post. A friend and I just bought tickets. Anyone know what the venue is like? Also, any speculation on how long DT will be playing? I saw them at the Orpheum two summers ago ( I believe) and the guest bands took up so much time, I felt a bit gypped. Their show a the Bank of America Pavilion (which, if memory serves, was the year before that) had guests but there was a lot more DT than the Orpheum show.
Based on what they've played on this tour so far, here's my setlist prediction:
A Nightmare To Remember
The Mirror
Lie
Sacrificed Sons
Wither
Constant Motion
The Spirit Carries On
As I Am
Pull Me Under/Metropolis
The Count Of Tuscany
That's a good guess, but I'm really hoping for Erotomania/Voices since it wasn't played in Worcester in '04.
By the way, I still have an extra ticket for this show if anyone needs one.
I wonder if they'll bust out any of the BC&SL cover songs...
Well, if what Scotty said is true about them not adding anything new, then definitely not. I wouldn't be shocked if they busted out Raw Dog though.
That's a good guess, but I'm really hoping for Erotomania/Voices since it wasn't played in Worcester in '04.
That isn't a wish list, beleive me. I'd take Erotomania/Voices anyday over Mirror/Lie. But Erotomania/Voices was played in Boston in 08 and it's been a while since The Mirror (04) and Lie (05) have been played.
This is what's great about DT. How many band TAC, can you talk about changing setlists like this?! Not Many!
-
Absolutely. One of the many things I love about them!
I would love to hear Odyssey! (or really any of them) I generally don't like bonus album covers but this collection is the exception. Great selections done great!
Hope this pub has a good stout or porter. Can't drink once I get inside the venue.
I'm from NH. Unless something has changed recently, you can't buy alcohol at a venue with an out of state driver's license unless you are 25+
It that's the case, its actually cheap for a concert venue.
yeah, I'm thinking that we have an "official" meetup at irish times late in the afternoon, as it sounds like it might better fit everyone and such, but (if you're up for it) we hit the Abbey a little bit beforehand to get some of the good stuff.
too bad i wont be in boston
-
Yeah, I dunno if I really wanna go from Worcester to Boston back to Worcester. :\ Especially since I went to the signing last summer.
I would love to have my Black Clouds and Silver Linings vinyl signed though...
-
MP did a signing at Daddy's Junky Music in Waterbury,CT a few years ago, I got confused when Chino posted about his upcoming signing.
-
Axe, we should meet up early them hit the Irishtimes bar with the gang. What time does everybody want to get together?
well the ticket says the doors are at seven, so I'm thinking maybe have the official meetup at Irish Times at around 4, and we can hit Armsby Abbey beforehand with whoever wants to join us there. You think I could bum a ride again?
no one from DTF, but there still exists a chance in theory that one of my buddies from back home will come up for the weekend (in which case I won't need a ride), but at this point I'm not counting on it.
-
I remember saying when tickets went on sale it wouldn't sell out any time soon. ZepDT disagreed with me.
I'm assuming there are still tickets left?
I'd be shocked if you couldn't walk up the night of the show and buy a ticket. I think the economy has really hurt DT.
-
Would anyone be interested in buying one ticket to this show? I bought one, but I'm now interested in heading out to see the two Fates Warning shows in Texas the same weekend. I paid $38 plus tax n shipping for the ticket, I believe. I can't remember for sure. If someone wants to save a few bucks and pay me $35 by PayPal, I'll mail you the ticket asap. Feel free to to PM me.
You don't have to be 21 to get into the Palladium. Most of the crowds at the typical Palladium shows are self-hating emotional high school kids. ;)
Actually, the average age group I see at the Palladium is more like 14/15 year old "rebel-against-mommy-and-daddy" aged teenagers. :D
-
After the reviews of the Portland show, I must say that I am getting very excited for this show.
I have an extra ticket if anyone needs one. PM me or email me at krd619@gmail.com
I too have a ticket...added incentive is that if you buy it and I have an extra meet and greet pass, you get first dibs :biggrin:
Shoot me an e-mail at plannineproductions@hotmail.com
Now this isn't a sure thing. Its all based on how many passes Ripper hooks me up with.
So what's the plan for the meetup? what time, and what bar we meeting at?
-
So what's the plan for the meetup? what time, and what bar we meeting at?
I would guess 5ish. Lets have everybody pipe in on this one. Axe and I will be next door at Armsby Abbey earlier that 5 if your into some fine beers.
-
I'm debating doing the MP meet and greet so I dunno what time I'm gonna get there. Plus, I know you guys said you don't have to be 21 to get in the bar, but I'll feel kind of awkward since I think I'm the only one under 21. :lol
We'll take you under our wing young padawan. Do not worry, you are with friends. Plus there's food there too!
I was thinking a little earlier than 5, just so there's some time for people who wanted to get there right for doors at 7 (or even line up a little earlier)
the Irish Times is right across the street from the venue, and that's where the meetup proper will be. Armsby Abbey is just a block or two away.
king, I was thinkiing somewhere around 2-2:30 to hit Armsby, give us time for a few good beers before we head over to Irish Times. If the meetup's not till 5 we could probably hold off a little longer though. Whenever's good for you is cool though, I'll just be hanging out all day.
-
Great, we'll see what everybody else is heading to the Irish bar and we'll go from there.
-
Okay I'm leaving here around 2:30, probably be in Worcestor around 4:30 so I'll see you all at the Irish Times
-
Ok, looks like I'll be hanging with the Charred Walls of the Damned guys most of the day.
So is anyone still interested in this last ticket?
-
Great, we'll see what everybody else is heading to the Irish bar and we'll go from there.
I'm gonna try for 5:00 at the Irish bar.
-
I'm excited. I'll be wearing my OSI shirt. Gotta represent KM!
-
I wanted to start hitting bars at like 3.
-
I don't mind coming up a little earlier to hit up bars.
-
My timing is totally up in the air at the moment, as I'm still trying to co-ordinate everything, but hopefully I'll be able to make it out early enough for some meet-up time. @Bill - I guess I'll just call or text you or something when I'm about an hour out of Worcester to see what the plan is. Relying on you is far easier for me than actually reading what other people have said in this thread... =)
... but I'll feel kind of awkward since I think I'm the only one under 21 ...
Our licenses may say we're over 21, but our sense of humor and maturity levels say we're about 14, so no worries.
-
Okay, my buddy and I are definitely hitting the bars earlier. We haven't had a chance to chill this summer because of work schedules, we want to get as much out of the day as possible. If you want to get down with the get down, add me on FB and maybe we can all come up with a plan for us early birds.
So my Buddy I jam wit (and have been trying to convert to a DT fan for a while LOL ) Just emailed me and told me hey i won 2 tickets for DT show sat night from a NH radio station ( That was a shock to me right there!! ).
So anyway looks like hes gonna like the setlist from what ive seen.this will be the first show that i have seen DT with a backup band too.
So from following this thread my actual question is everyone meating accross the street at an irish bar before the show ?? I have never been to this venue so were just gonna look for these bars you been talking about so thanks for the info .
-
The Irish bar is a stones throw away from the Palidium. Axe and I will be at a bar a few buildings down first before we hit the Irish bar.
-
Ok sounds good i will find you guys im sure !! and yes real beer sounds good to me so im gonna try to find that Abby's Bar and hit the other irish bar also , My buddy on the other hand doesn't care for the fine beers but he will go were there is beer!!!!
-
You know what could potentially be kinda semi-cool in a drunken ultra-cheesy way: DT karoake. :metal
-
sorry if this has already been discussed in another thread. wondering if anyone has heard the set list they have been playing in the shows like Worcester? gotta work on Saturday,hope to get out early, hope to meet some of you at the local establishments. bringing a friend who recently discovered dream theater,will be his first time seeing them. my first time seeing them in such a small venue,cant wait!!! jc :metal :metal :metal :metal
-
I've seen the setlist they've been doing for these one off shows, it's in the DT tour dates and setlists thread. hoping to grab some beers with you and everyone else before the show. I'm really excited for this weekend, the setlist looks good, definitely going to enjoy it.
-
I am getting excited :metal :metal :metal
-
Yes, I too am very pumped for this. Should be a lot of fun! Headlining setlists thus far are looking pretty good. If they keep the latest addition, I know that will make my guest very very happy as its their new favorite DT tune.
-
Hope JLB takes it easy tonight so he can shriek his balls off tomorrow night for us in Worcester :biggrin:. (he should save his best for the DT headlining shows anyway don't ya think?)
-
Ok so I made a mp3 cd with the setlist thats been repoted and a mix of other DT tunes for the ride up and back tomorrow to the show , since this will be my buddy's first DT show and has only heard what i have made him listen to lol!!!
So anyway see who ever is going to the bars before the show tomorrow!!!!!!!!!
-
I can't stop ahitting my pants in excitement
-
it looks like im bringing another person to the bars with me. so +2 for me
-
I can't stop ahitting my pants in excitement
Bring extra underpants cause you'll need it! :laugh:
-
I'll be wearing my OSI t-shirt and DT baseball cap. If you wanna break the ice, walk up to me when you see me and start singing the opening lines "Space-Dye Vest."
-
I've been to the Paladium 6 times but only downstairs.Is the upstairs standing room only?
Edit: nevermind. It is downstairs!!
-
So Axe and I will be at Armsby Abbey around 2:30/3:00 and then we'll head over the the Irish bar(which is a fastball away from Armsby) around 5pm. See you all there.!! :metal
leaving soon with king, we should be at Armsby Abbey in an hour barring some kind of unfortunate mishap (such as us getting on the wrong highway again :D ). I'll have jean shorts and a G3 shirt on :metal
-
King, You have a BREAD??
I'll have a gray Fix For '96 t shirt and a black DT cap.
I'll be in a Frost* shirt - be there around 5 or so
Posting from within the venue, Charred Remains Of My Eardrums are playing. Good God are they bad. It's almost comical.
rumborak
-
Great show! Very personable to the audience. Charred Walls of the Damned were probably good, but the mixing was terrible, couldn't hear anything other than rhythm guitar, the snare/cymbals and the singer.
DT was really good, here was the setlist:
Psycho opening into A Nightmare To Remember
Constant Motion (they sped this up A LOT)
A Rite of Passage
Home ( :hefdaddy)
Hollow Years (with bootleg verses and extended solos)
The Mirror
Lie
Wither
As I Am
Pull Me Under/ Metropolis Pt. 1 Medley thing
Encore: The Count of Tuscany.
Edit: And Panic Attack... somewhere....
-
great show tonight. really hot in there. had a couple at the irish pub. the line was down the street and around the corner.they packed the house.mikes kids and wife were there,mike kept sticking the stick up his nose. truly a great night. jc :metal :metal :metal
-
I just got home. I met up with chino, DTVT, and axeman at irish time. Was great putting a face to the usernames, had a great time tonight! good people, good set, good day.
-
Just got home and devoured an egg and cheese sandwich and now its time to crash! I had an awesome time tonight. I met some cool people(you know who you are) and saw some I had met before. The band sounded great and I think I lost 5 pounds, as it was about 120 degrees in the balcony. I'm glad I made the two hour trip.
Good night!
-
King, You have a BREAD??
I'll have a gray Fix For '96 t shirt and a black DT cap.
Bread LOL! Great show tonight. Like Tick said it was friggin hot up in the balcony. Going to bed, I'll say hello to all the peeps when I get up in the morning.
Also Rumbo was right Charred Walls sounded like a wall of noise and an exploding snare drum.
-
Bummer, I missed TCOT, but I was exhausted from the day and the brutal heat in the venue, and the fact that I had a 1-hour drive still ahead of me. So, I dropped out before the encore.
rumborak
-
What a show! Moshpits and crowd surfing too lol. I was right up front, a few feet away from the stage. Lots of great energy from the crowd and the band sounded great. My whole body is sore. Bed time! And I got to hear "The Mirror/Lie"!!! w00-h00!!!!
-
I've got to say, I've been too a hundred shows at the Palladium, and this had the worst douche-bags on the floor I have EVER had to deal with. I couldn't believe it. There were seriously fist-fights nearly breaking out every 5 seconds. I've been to the most extreme metal shows imaginable, and the audiences were still more respectful then the people that showed up tonight. Nearly ruined the show for me. And its honestly turned me off from ever being on the floor at a DT gig ever again.
Other then that, great show! Performances were on. Everyone sounded great, all the songs were tight.
Agreed that Charred Walls were good, but the sound was all fucked up. That would likely be because the Palladium sound-house guy is a complete dick-hole, but we won't get into that. I'm also sick of their security. Ya know, I hope the House of Blues steals all there business and runs that place out of business soon, because they have become an abomination of what it once was. I'm actually upset that I have to go to at least 3 more shows before years end there.
Anyways, sorry, I can't seem to get over how upset I am, but shit like that gets to me. This was supposed to be a great and magical experience for me and a few cocks had to go and fuck it all up for me. I'm happy for those here that had a good time.
-
I'm sorry to hear your experience was so chaotic Mike. I choose the balcony because I wanted to chill and watch the show from a distance. I tell you what, it was peaceful as can be up there. It had to be, no one wanted to make any unnecessary movements as it was a billion degrees up there. I have never experienced anything like the heat in that balcony at a show. When I first walked up there I was shocked at how fuckin HOT it was!!! and by how much seating there was. I was like, this is a small club show? Anyhow it was so fucking hot I couldn't believe it, did I mention that? After I acclimated to the temperature I was ok for the most part, but wow, it was crazy hot(for the third time). The temp dropped a good 20 degrees every time I went down a level to the bathroom.
and to all the peeps I met at the Irish bar, once again, cheers! it was great hanging with you!
Oh, and its the second show I ran in to ZBomb is a large setting, and it was cool that he came up and sweated in the balcony with us. Myself and the people I was hanging with owned an entire row!
and TAC said "hey tick!" in the lobby while he was talking to King and Mrs King. I was like hey how ya doing and finally I said, ok, who the hell are you? :lol
Terrific night as far as I'm concerned, and DT sounded really good.
-
oh, and who was that guy belting out the Ronnie James Dio in the Irish bar! :biggrin:
-
Great show as others have posted , And yeah it was dam hot uo in the seats !!!!!!
My buddy and I hung around at the Irish bar for a couple beers and a bite to eat (food was nasty but oh well )
So anyway we hung out in the parking lot behind the venue and they had the back door open were the sound guy was and we got to hear Dt's sound check that was a first, and very awesome , we were so tempted to walk in and try to hang out right there but didn't want to screw up the night and get kicked out but we walked out at the end of the show and I told my buddy hey there gonna do an encore he was like I cant take the heat anymore so I agreed and we went out to the back door and walked in like we belonged there and watched the count from there Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot!!!
-
I wish mine was 1 hour. Wife, daughter & I had 4.5 hour drive back to northwestern Vermont. Got to bed at 5:00.
James was freakin awesome by the way, incredible pipes.
-
Hey - first time poster. Thought I'd share our experience. My Fiance and I drove up from near the cape to Worcester last night, so you'd think when they finished near midnight we'd want to hit the road right away. But no... We sort of stood around on the side street next to the Palladium while traffic cleared. Had a smoke, watched roadies and thought "hey.. wonder how long until the band comes out we should totally see if we can meet them".
So long story short - we got to meet James, who came out really early and took pictures with folks, signed some stuff and was so kind and soft spoken. Then we hung out for another hour and a half or so (with some really awesome fellow fans) and met Mike and John P (or "god" as one fan called him). Mike and John were walking around with their kids (we're on Mike's daughter's home videos :lol ) and it was pretty awesome not just to meet some of your idols, but to see them just being normal dads. I think we finally got in at 3:15am or so.
This was my third show - Boston last year, Toronto w/ Maiden last weekend, and last night. I really think this was their most stellar performance. James was spot on last night and well, the rest, you know needs no explanation. We were up toward the back right behind the booths and I think we were the most into it of anyone around us. So glad I wasn't in that pit. It looked like a game of Red Rover gone horribly wrong.
-
Great story, megancatherine, and welcome to the forums!
Also,
and TAC said "hey tick!"
Been to a dozen DT shows in all sorts of venues and the Palladium is THE PITS - worse venue, by far. My son and I were on the floor and it was unbearably hot - the 45 min between sets with the high-beams on us almost killed me! Lamest mosh-pit I've ever dealt with - bunch of idiots. DT commented on how they love playing intimate venues like this one, but it will take a lot for me to ever want to go to that hell-hole ever again.
That said, you can't steal away the magic of DT concert - awesome, beyond expectations! It was fun to watch Mike play to his kids - and to watch them rock out was amazing! Petrucci's playing never ceases to amaze, and the back and forth he had with Rudess and his key-tar was incredible.
Now, seeing them again on Mon. at MSG with Maiden, sitting with the a/c on (I hope...)
R.I.P. Moes Hot Dogs!!! "The worlds best Hot Dogs, maybe even better" I never even knew you but you will be missed! Worcester will never be the same!
Megancatherine..are you the guy I met in my store a few weeks ago?
Think groceries..
so kingshmegland and his wife picked me up at about 1:45 and we began the hour long drive to Worcester. None of the parking garages right near the venue were even open when we got there :lol so we had to park a few blocks away (which might have made our escape a bit easier afterwards). We headed over to Armsby Abbey and set up camp for a while, we were definitely there a solid hour and a half and had three rounds each of very good beer (cheers to the bartender who I think was a DT fan and gave me a break on a tasting flight featuring a pour of Cantillon, a rare Belgian brewery whose beer was $15 for a full glass). Chino stopped in with his buddy for a quick beer before they made their way over to Irish Times. We went over there a little before 5 and the place was already packed full of prog nerds :lol Evidently most of the shows at the Palladium attract a younger (under 21) crowd, so they didn't put on any extra staff for a pre show rush, so the help was kind of mobbed. It took us forever to get our appetizers, and then it took long enough for me to get my Sierra Nevada Pale Ale that they didn't charge me for it :hat Cheers to meeting tick, dreamtheatervt, Elsydeon, and I think maybe one or two more of you that I'm forgetting. We need nametags next time like at the Score pre-party :lol ZeppDT made it a little bit later on and we hung out with him for a while before heading over to the venue. Big thanks to tick for making room in the row he and his compatriots procured for me and Mr & Mrs Shmegland. Yes, as others noted, it was ridiculously hot in there, brutal really. I forget the name of the guy who did a few minutes of standup to open, but I didn't think he was that funny, although I do appreciate a punchline of "Yeah, he cried harder than Dave Mustaine in Some Kind of Monster". I think I laughed harder at Portnoy growling C IS FOR COOKIE THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME during ANTR :lol As others said, the opening band's sound was pretty unfortunate, but I don't think they would have been my cup of tea anyway. I got to (very briefly) meet TAC as everyone was making their way back to their seats because it was only a few minutes to Psycho. Dream Theater put on a great show, James was on, and I got to see Wither live for the first time. It was weird seeing them without any video screens (though I understand why), and I noticed James had a foot pedal that he used I think to trigger some delay in his vocals, which I don't remember seeing at previous shows. It was a bit of a tease though when James was talking for a minute about them touring as an opener with Iron Maiden and Portnoy played the drum intro to Run to the Hills, I thought for a second we were gonna get a drum duel with Richard Christy. A few wrong turns trying to escape Worcester later and I made it home. Thanks again to kingshmegland and his wife for giving me a ride to/from, and for everyone who came out yesterday and helped make it a good time!
Not the guy... the girl.. but yes, that'd be us :laugh:
I didn't think the floor was incredibly bad. However, I am sympathetic if it bothered you because I was beside a Faith No More pit last week and the rowdiness pissed me off. It was like Fight Club. But compared to that, this one seemed weak and manageable since it was mostly skinny DT fanboys. I must admit I was really bouncing/bobbing/hopping and shouting the lyrics when The Mirror/Lie kicked in. I love those Awake songs and it really rocketed up my energy level alot. I got lost in the vibe and really let loose. But I'm never one to push someone, so the pit is not for me. I'm more of a fist-pumper/bobber/singer.
Nice meeting some of you, like king, and I think I shook axeman's hand. And, of course, I went with Zepp. Damn, I'm ready for another DT show!
-
yeah, I'm pretty sure you're the person I knew I was forgetting when I typed up my post :lol
also, I forget which song early in the set it was, but MP took a pretty awesome extended drum fill at the end and I found myself thinking "Damn, he beat those drums like they dared disrespect Egypt". They also cut out the intro to Home, which confused me and then made me sad because it's all about the buildup to the WOMP WOMP
-
A phenomenal show!
There was as much energy between DT and the crowd than I ever remember being. Certainly not since the SFAM show in 2000. Maybe it wasn't "just another stop" and that it was one of these one off shows, but the band was probably the most engaged I have EVER seen since the early days. And the crowd responded big time. What an amazing experience. In my opinion, last year's setlist was much better and diverse, but this heavy set really worked given the venue and energy. The band was loose and comfortable and really looked happy to be there.
After seeing bands multiple times, sometimes you can tell if it's important to them...and to me, this band made a statement last night.
Jordan was really into it, and John Myung played at the foot of the stage far more than I ever remember.
Being on the road with Iron Maiden seems to have rubbed off on them performance wise, especially James, who BTW, was outstanding. He sounded absolutely fantastic.
Very cool to meet Kingshmegland, and also to say hello to Tick and Axeman. Also got a chance to meet Don Jamison simply walking down the street after his set. He was very cool and gracious.
This was one of my favorite Dream Theater performances that I’ve seen. The ending of Home has to be seen to be believed!
I've never been to The Palladium, but as I was sitting there before DT went on, it gave me the feeling that I was in a Planet Of The Apes movie, and this run down theater was buried underground, and it's where the surviving humans would gather. Definitely a creepy place!
-
I got Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung to acknowledge me in the crowd. :biggrin: Near the end when they were about to bow I pointed towards Myung and nodded my head in respect and he looked at me, put his hands together and nodded his head back.
:metal
I don't know what the deal is with support act sound guys. I mean, do they get told to intentionally fuck up the band's sound? It took the guy 3 songs and an extended guitar solo to for the first time pull up the guitars.
I wish mine was 1 hour. Wife, daughter & I had 4.5 hour drive back to northwestern Vermont. Got to bed at 5:00.
Jesus Christ. 1 hour is upper limit for driving to a concert. But, I guess that's easy to say for me, living in Boston. In Northwestern VT I would think the pickings are slim :lol
Hello to all the DTF'er ;D that my wife and I met. Axe spelled it out great about last night, and he was right about the part of us getting lost a little bit. What the hell is wrong with the town of Worcester with their street signs pointing us to go to I-290. I think some kids had to steal some signs to make us go in circles for 15 minutes! ;D(I'm sticking with this story). Great to meet you all. I had a blast speaking about, what else, Seinfield and Curb Your Enthusiasm! Drinking some great beers. Watching Tick's unbridled enthusiasm for DT and finally meeting TAC. Great to meet you and your wife. Also Z, Chino and Mebert were a very cool kids. Damn your all young enough to be my kids.
BTW axe. I think the Drum part mike did was Where Eagles Dare.
Killer show. I have never seen the Palladium that packed in all the shows I've seen there. That was also the hottest show I have ever been to there. Very unusual. Driving into the city, I could not believe the line to get in. We parked off Foster St and walked towards the Palladium from the other direction and walked right in the will call line. Sorry to those folks we bypassed in line :P
Got a railing spot by the soundboard. Great view. I thought Don Jamieson was pretty funny
That was the best I have ever seen DT play (and that is saying something since I have never been disappointed). Highlights for me were Lie, As I Am, and the Count of Tuscany. I'm not sure if it was because of the intimate setting, but Petrucci stole the show, although James absolutely owned The Mirror/Lie with his vocals. Jordan did have a couple techinal issues with a couple songs.
Mike singing C is for Cookie during A Nightmare to Remember was hysterical. The guys looked like they were having so much fun up there, especially during Jordan and Petrucci's jam off during PMU/Metropolis. Also, when they sped up PMU and James couldn;t keep up with the vocals because they were playing so fast was a riot.
Anyone know who the older couple was up on the ledge with Mike's kids?
oh and Richard Christy's drumming for CWOTD was insane
Hey does anyone happen to know the name of the female artist who did the cover of "As I Am" that was played before the show? I've heard it before two shows now but can't find anything about it online. Sorry for the lame question - I'm sorta new here :angel:
Thanks a bunch, guys!
Edit: In my infinite awesomeness and totally not awake yet, I just posted this on my fiance's computer under his account. So forgive me all for sounding girly - this is actually Megancatherine, above poster :facepalm:
Sorry, I can't help out with your question, but I'm sure someone will. :tup
I agree with Serp. This was as loose as I've EVER seen DT.
BTW, the show went up on Dime last night!
-
Yeah - I'm a spaceshot this morning. I give him tons of credit for putting up with me. It'll be the first and only post most likely - unless I stumble over to the wrong computer again.
Just as an aside to something TAC said - while we were at the Toronto Maiden show the first thing I noticed about James is that he'd either taken a refresher course of Frontman 101, or touring with BD really rubbed off on him. I don't have a lot of stuff to compare to - just the show last year at the Pavilion in Boston, but he just seemed so much more energetic and engaged. It's good to hear other people make the same assumptions about the effects of touring as an opener to Maiden.
dimeadozen, a popular (legal) bootleg site. It uses torrents though, so make sure you are familiar with them if you join the site.
OMFG DOWNLOADING NOW IN FLAC.
I'm really surprised at how good the quality of this is, especially taking into effect how bad the sound was in the venue that night. at least for me anyway
-
Agreed, I was on the right side of the venue, and could hear Myung actually pretty well, which was odd, Petrucci was balanced, Portnoy was piercing in a good way, but James was drowned out by the crowd, but from these samples alone it sounds great!!
Not sure where you were in the palladium, but I couldn't believe how clear everything was. I eventually took my earplugs out because there was no difference in sound with having them in. You could even hear Portnoy when he was talking back and forth with James about him being Canadien.
Best sounding show I have ever seen there, Opeth comes a close second.
-
This was the first time I had seen DT since 2003, believe it or not. It was great. Magical. I love the feeling of being surrounded by other hardcore fans that passionately love the same tunes I listen to everyday. For those two hours, it's like nothing else exists in the world and I'm just lost in the moment. I can't wait to see them again.
it's a French couple I believe, Pipo and Elo. They've covered a few Dream Theater songs and I'm pretty sure they've been played in venues either beforehand or in between sets for a couple tours now.
Hi everyone, registered so I could post here.
This was my second Dream Theater show, saw them at ProgNation in Boston a while ago. I liked this show a lot more. I was 4-5 people back right in the center of the floor. It was my first experience in a pit during a show, it was pretty crazy during the first two songs but people calmed down after that. (I'm pretty tall so I could breathe the fresh air above everyone ;)) The show blew me away. Every song was super awesome, but when they traded off solos in metropolis it was probably the best thing I've ever seen happen at any concert I've been to ever. All the members were great as usual, but John Myung really stood out for some reason. It's one thing to watch him play on youtube, but in person he seems to have a really mysterious, focused intensity that I think is really cool.
I didn't wear earplugs, kind of regretting it now but hey it was worth it.
There don't seem to be much youtube videos up, I'm kind of reluctant to try and download all this torrent software for it...
I think I remember you. You said you were tall. I was center in the pit about 4-5 people back. There was a tall guy right next to me that was a whole head above the rest of the crowd. Glasses too, I think? I think it could have been you. I had a DT hat on and OSI shirt.
Must visit dime after work.
Everything is kind of a blur haha, and no I wasn't wearing glasses. Were you the one trying to inch your way up to the front because your "friend was up there"? Someone did that to me and I fell for it, if I remember correctly the person looked somewhat like your avatar picture...lol
No no, that wasn't me. I didn't talk to anyone while the show was going lol. I was standing near some guy wit ha sleeveless Queensryche t-shirt for much of the show. I was to his right.
Long-time DT fan, first-time poster here.
This was my first DT show. It was a 13th birthday present for my progressive metal/MP fan drummer son. His 15yo brother tagged along.
1. The Palladium was a DIVE! Why couldn't they play at House of Blues or anyplace else? And what's a classy band like DT doing in such a hell-hole?
2. Does anyone know the who artist was that plays the acoustic version of Pull Me Under that was played between the opener and DT? I wanna get my hands on that.
3. The sound sucked for the opening band. Or was that just their sound? Ugh.
Yeah the palladium is kind of a craphole, I went to use the bathroom and I felt like I lost a couple years off my life just being in there. I enjoyed it though, I doubt dream theater will ever play in such a small venue again. It was a once in a life time thing.
Found them: https://pipoelo.free.fr/welcome.php
They're all over youtube too if you search their names.
And I wasn't a big fan of the opening band, but the singer was pretty good, sounded like Dio.
Wasn't a fan of Charred Walls either. When I heard Tim Owens had a new band I was hoping it would be more like Iced Earth. They sounded like a high school metal band:(
Show was good. The Palladium sucks. I had been in the upstairs before to see a show, and to be honest, even though the upstairs is usually used for smaller, less known bands, it is a MUCH better place to see a show. I sat in the balcony for DT, which was a very smart move on my part, imo. It was dying in there. I don't think I could have taken close quarters/shoving in that heat. I also got to have some pretty cool conversations with kingshmegland and tick. :)
The set itself was awesome. Home was awesome, and I'm REALLY glad they played The Count of Tuscany again because I didn't think I'd ever see that song live again. The end part when it went acoustic was amazing. Everyone in the venue went quiet and got caught up in the moment. The Mirror/Lie was unexpected, but a treat. Could have done without some stuff, namely the songs they play at the IM shows (AROP, Constant Motion), but they were performed well, so that's all that matters.
In comparison to the New York City show, I would say that the MSG show was actually better in terms of energy, sound, and performance. However, the Palladium show obviously got the better setlist, because songs like ANTR, Tuscany, and The Mirror weren't played at MSG... so I'm glad I was able to go to both. :D
Just keep trying at dime. They constantly delete stagnant accounts, so there are new spots opening up all the time. When I joined, it took me about an hour, checking every few minutes.
This is going to be short as I'm at a Starbucks and this is my first REAL internet connection in a few weeks - but this show was awesome despite the oven-like conditions. I had a blast meeting everyone at the meet & greet, and I'm sorry I didn't get to meet those of you that I didn't meet. Can't wait til I get back down to Virginia to get the bootlegs and start postring here again.
I joined Dime but after a couple of hours searching I have yet to be able to find the bootleg of the show. Can someone guide me to finding it or share it with me. I have an FTP site it that would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.....
at dime, just search * "Dream Theater" Worcester * without the *'s, but keep ST in quotes. It might not be at the top of the list, but it will be there. I'm still seeding it, along with the MSG DT and IM shows.
Welcome to DTF! How long have you been a fan?
Well I would guess not as long as some of you here but I stumbled onto them at the time Scenes was released and got hooked big time. I wont say that I love everything that they have done and the real old stuff is not high on my list but it's all great stuff. What I really love is when they take a really old tune and play it with today's skills and technique, mind blowing. Black Clouds Silver Linings was disappointing to me, I like it but I just don't think it holds up like Train of Thought or Systematic Chaos do. I would also say that recent events like no real BCSL tour in the US, no behind the scenes DVD of the BCSL recording session and now the tour with Iron Maiden as their opening act all have me a bit concerned about the future of DT. Being a Berklee graduate myself makes them all that more interesting to me.
I wouldn't worry about the lack of a "Making of" DVD.
I listened to this show Yesterday and although it's been said, I just want to reiterate how much James f##king owned this show. Phenomenal. It was like he was toying with us during The Mirror/Lie.
I need to get it.
This show was the last DT American headlining show with Portnoy, was it not?
If that is the case that is pretty cool cause I was in the inferno balcony to see it! :metal
-
Yes it was and what a great show. I can't believe that MP would be gone so soon afterward. The band seemed so "happy". Much more so than the show at the Pavillion in 2009.
Lots of energy at that show and they were on that night.
My wife almost passed out. I had to take her to get some water.
We should form a club..."Survivors of MP's last (real) show with DT". There are some kids here who think them opening for Maiden in DC is the last show.
I didn't realize that was the last full show! I'm in of course. :hat
That makes that show especially special for me then especially after meeting the cool people of dtf.
I was there, but not in the balcony. Didn't realize this was MPDT's last US show. Cool trivia.
I did have a blast meet up with all of you. Plus great beers and a great show.
I was talking to a friend about this show recently and how insanely hot it was in that venue that night. The balcony had to be 90 degrees for real.
Anyway, I had no idea the time I was sweating through a historical Dream Theater show. This was I believe the last headlining show Mike Portnoy ever played with the band. This is correct is it not?
The moral of the story... Never play a gig without AC or you run the risk of losing the drummer.
I believe they played in Japan, and also finished the Maiden tour.
You could call it his last Headline show as I think the Japaneese shows were festivals. Certainly his last headlining show in the US.
That was a fantastic show! They done three special shows that tour I remember in between the Maiden opening nights. I remember going up to Worcester for it and then 2 days later seeing them open for Maiden at Madison Square Garden. Although on paper the set for the MSG show was unremarkable but solid (As I am, Rite of Passage, Home, Constant Motion, Panic Attack, Pull Me Under).
Knowing it was, to my knowledge, their first show at Madison Square Garden it was extra special. I don't have a copy of that show but I recall Portnoy saying something about that. I got chills even though i was a mile away in the stands I could feel how happy and thrilled they were to be at this historic venue in (most of) their home towns.
But yeah that Worcester show, I've been to other shows there and it's always pretty hot but it was mid July and DAMN steamy in that place. Especially up on the balcony. I had a near front seat view. Incredible show, my favourite show ever. I have a copy of the show, not sure if there are multiple versions. The setlist was a dream for me, lots of top 5 songs for me.
So fond memories friends!
