You'll probably disagree with me entirely but aside from the 4 direct to DVD movies - which varied wildly in quality - I don't think Futurama dipped all that much when it came back.
Definitely not as far as The Simpsons has anyway. I'm so glad Futurama ended before it became that.
Upon rewatching them, I'd agree with you. The movies were a very mixed bag, but coming back as a series, I'm enjoying it almost as much as the earlier ones, more than I remembered.
The Fry/Leela relationship feels like a bit of a joke and more at the whim of the writers that episode, and some of the emotional moments/episodes feel contrived, but overall it's been very consistent, and there haven't been any episodes I've really disliked. Although I'm sad it got canceled, that last episode was a great send-off too.
