ROUND 4 RESULTSEvermind: Loch Vostok – Expiry Date of the Soul of ManI’m surprised I never hear of this band because it’s definitely my style. You compared them to Wolverine and Katatonia. To be honest, I don’t hear a lot of Katatonia but it definitely sounds similar to Katatonia and there’s some of Dark Tranquillity. DT is most of the time faster and has growls in many if not all songs but there’s this gothic feeling, chugging of low tuned guitars and, of course, melancholy. Singer’s voice reminds me of Chris Cornell a lot, that’s probably the reason I like it even more. Even though it’s not the most original song I don’t have anything bad to say about it and it’s my favourite of the round.
9.5 pointsCyril: My Chemical Romance – Welcome to the Black ParadeAs I said, both my brother and sister knew this song by heart and were surprised I never heard it. Firstly, that intro is super epic. It’s one the best things I heard in this roulette so far. Secondly, the rest of the song isn’t really in my taste, I was never into pop-punk other than some Green Day and that was years ago. Nevertheless, I got into it, especially the ending which reminiscent of the intro in epicness department. And of course I got chorus stuck in my head for days
So you still didn’t fail in this roulette.
9 pointssenecadawg2: Glen Hansard – Bird of SorrowYeah, this song is pretty simple. As you said, just a man and his piano. I was afraid it will be just a boring song with sad lyrics but it’s much more than that. At first, it was kinda boring because the beginning of the song is instrumentally and vocally simple. But after that comes the guitar and strings and vocals get more interesting. The thing that actually won me are, as is case with music I love, the vocal melodies which are catchy and anthemic but full of pain and regret. It still isn’t one of the best songs I heard in this roulette but it is one of the best of the round 4.
8.5 pointsFlyingBIZKIT: OSI – RadiologueGiven how much I like Fates Warning and Kevin Moore you won’t be surprised when I tell you I tried to get into OSI a few years ago. But as you can assume I couldn’t get into it. I guess it was the combination of metal with electronic music I had problem with. Still, it’s not something I enjoy that much and I couldn’t get into NIN last round either. But with time, I kinda got into this song and I could definitely get into this band if I tried more. Moore’s vocals would probably put some people off but I find his voice so soothing I love listening to him. Other thing I like about this song are actually drums (if that’s not electronic beat but I definitely hear some tasty double drums). So as I said, I got into it but it still didn’t fully won me over.
7.5 pointsKatellox: Kardashev – Between Sea and SkyI’m glad I did not check anything about this band before listening, otherwise I would get scared as fuck when those growls kicked in
I have to say you finally (kinda) got my tastes. I just love it when the song is at the same time super heavy but also really emotional. Atmosphere in this one is on point as well and there are few headbangable moments. My only objection is that it’s not that original. But it’s enjoyable and in my style alright. Your best song along with Broken Bells one, it’s close.
7 pointsPuppies_On_Acid: Monica Heldal – Boy from the NorthI heard a lot of indie folk artists but most of them still sound more like pop or rock and this really reminds me of traditional folk, even has country twang, especially in vocals. Everything about this song is alright. Too bad it’s never more than that. Her vocals are just fine, it’s atmospheric and that’s something I like in my music. Have nothing more to say about it honestly.
6 pointsKwyjibo: Ultravox – ViennaThis one certainly sounds familiar but I’m not sure if I ever heard it. Never heard of the band tho. Right away it reminded me of Depeche Mode but vocals fits better with music. It’s my favourite of older syntpop songs I got in this roulette. But that doesn’t say much
The catchiness is definitely the element that rises it above them and it is definitely not forgettable song. Vocals seems really fresh for the time and the genre yet I can’t say I find the song that good. I mean, it is good but it’s not like I couldn’t start listening to it. So it’s in the middle of the park, nothing more.
5.5 pointsStadler: The Claypool Lennon Delirium - Amethyst RealmYou were a bit late with this one which meant I didn’t give it that much listens as I did with other songs. However, I’m glad you did send and you got quite a good score given the before mentioned thing. In PM, you wrote this music is not for everyone but we’re on DTF and this seems like a pretty good progressive rock piece, I can’t see why you wouldn’t send it before
I heard of Les Claypool before but his playing always seemed a bit over the top for me. Here, however, he goes along with the groove and sound great. The song as a whole is at the same time chill but kinda scary. I like it, will check the album.
5 pointsLethean: Cynthesis – IncisionThe song I got hard time getting into which is weird because it’s not too weird or anything. I guess it’s because of more of a recited than singed vocals in some parts of the song. Once that’s out of the way I like the song a bit more. Vocals sounds really powerful and bass lines as cool albeit a bit over the top for my taste. In the end, it’s one of those forgettable songs I enjoy quite a bit while I’m listening to them but can’t recall one thing about when I’m not.
4.5 pointswolfking: Pendragon - Skara BraeThis song is full of nice guitar riffs and licks so it quite got under my skin and in my head. Sadly, I don’t like vocals at all, it just sounds not special in any way. And vocals are really important to me. Vocal melodies got a bit more in my taste near the middle of the song and I like reprises of the main riff. But the worst thing about the song and the one that ruins it for me is guitar solo. Those natural harmonics are just wtf, unnecessary thing. All in all, it’s fine song but nothing more than that.
4 pointshome: M83 – WaitI heard some M83 with Susanne Sundfor and maybe sometimes else but I expected it to be more electronic, less rockish and definitely less dreamy. My sister recognized this song from Fault in our stars movie when I played it but I did not even though I saw it (not really a fan tbh). The song itself is really sad but unfortunately a bit samey and (sorry) boring. I feel like typing same thing over and over but it is just a fine song but not anything special.
3.5 pointsTAC: Dreamgrave – Black SpiralOh god, this song! It’s everything I find wrong about this type of music in one song. It’s balls to the wall for the whole duration, just let me breathe
I guess I would be fine with it but I find both growls and female operatic vocals to be subpar. When they stop singing it’s alright but only the guitar solo is really great part of the song for me. That part on its own got you bumped few points up. Yeah, don’t send me something similar again
3 pointsSacul: Fishmans – Weather ReportI don’t know if I’d find this so weird if it wasn’t for Japanese. And I don’t like weird music. At all. I even can’t say why in particular I don’t like this. It’s just that every listen of this was feeling more like a chore and less like something I enjoy to do. I have to say it’s pretty dreamy and sounds is really full and nice but I didn’t like music that much and vocals at all, sadly.
