okay giving this a second listen when i'm a bit more awake and hell yeeeeeeaaaah this is so good

You'd probably also like the two Reality 2: Archive Of Fading Mist DDS albums, they're probably the closest to this style in the rest of their discography. Let me know if you want them :lol

sure, why not. totally above board yes.

though tbh the impression i've gotten is that the stuff i like is more galen tipton's contributions than dds, some other closer stuff i've idly been checking out from dds doesn't do anything for me so. we'll see  :lol

The hit rate of Toehider EPs is really high! I think the ones from this year are even better than last years, on average.

Yea, I think that's like their 4th this year. Toad Hirer is easily the best for me.

Wow. Yeah I'm gonna jump in and listen to them this week!

They're all pretty short, so it shouldn't take too long  :metal

I've just been watching this documentary on Swedish metal, and it's got me in the mood to listen to loads of Gothenburg melodeath  :metal

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=shared&v=8UxRqtKg-dw

First up...

(I know they're not technically part of the Gothenburg scene, but as close as you can get really)

Huh, I don't think I was aware of that documentary, I'll have to check it out.  Coincidentally, I had plowed through the first three AE albums again a few days ago.  :lol  I think they were more consistent in the early days, but achieved some higher heights in the Angela-era.

I was only into later AE for the longest time and never really delved into the old stuff despite owning the CD's.  I got all three out and was amazed, mostly by Stigmata.  That is so underrated and possibly now my fav AE album.  It's incredible.

I guess it depends on the crowd, for example Metal-Archives actually rates it the highest of any of theirs, though I'm generally quite skeptical of their ratings and reviews.  But I do have a hard time deciding between them, although it might be the strongest candidate.  Wildoer's guest drumming is on a level beyond Erlandsson (I especially love the groove early in the title track), and it has everything from the ferocity of "Beast of Man" to the stellar epic harmonies at the end of "Bridge of Destiny".

It's well worth checking out dude, but it's like 4 hours long :lol  It starts with Europe then goes through early death metal like Entombed's Left Hand Path, then into the Gothenburg melodeath scene (whilst also touching on bands like Refused). My intro to Arch Enemy was Doomsday Machine, and although I've heard almost all of their other albums, those Angela Gossow albums are peak AE as far as I'm concerned.

Stigmata and Burning Bridges are my favorite Arch Enemy albums, by some margin.

Yep, lots of highlights on Stigmata. I do enjoy Erlandsson drumming too, though.

Anyway, I think we discussed this not long ago, but will say I have progressively lost interest in AE a few albums into the Gossow era. Maybe in part it was a general drift away on my part, I don’t know.

Peter Gabriel - I/O

I've tried to get into Peter Gabriel's music for years and it was always a huge miss for me. I'm almost done with the first half of this album and I'm really, really digging it. I came into thinking I'd hate it but I really enjoy it.

Next on Melodeath Mondays, arguably the pinnacle of the genre....

Goddamn, the mellow section in Cold, followed by Andy LaRocque's guest solo maybe the highlight of At the Gates career for me. So damn good.

Yes, yes, yes to how fantastic that part is. So good.

Another favorite section of mine is in Under a Serpent Sun - the instrumental break with the harmonized guitars. So epic and so incredibly melancholic at the same time. It’s one of those you wish they’d keep going with.

It's pretty good. Didn't blow me away, but I liked it enough to want to check some of his other work soon. Once I'm done with the roulette stuff :P
