Okay, my DVD player feels lonely...
Stuff I love: Breaking Bad, Lost, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Malcolm in the Middle (too bad only Season 1 got released).
I also enjoyed Battlestar Galactica, Serenity, Band of Brothers.
You might also add movies.
So, any suggestions? Older or new, funny or serious - whatever. I enjoy reading SF and fantasy, so might be from these genres, too.
-
Mad Men
Survivorman (only if you smoke reefer, or are philosophically minded)
-
Fringe (from J.J. Abrams, who had a big hand in LOST)
Dexter
-
I second Fringe and let me add Justified.
-
American Horror Story season 1 and of course the greatest cartoon series of all time...THE TICK! :tick2:
-
Mad Men is great. Couldn't get into Fringe at all. We just started with Homeland too.
-
The Wire
-
Game of Thrones
-
Scrubs
-
Sons of Anarchy
...........by far
-
Party Down
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
House, M.D.
Workaholics
American Horror Story
Louie
Sons of Anarchy
Game of Thrones
I'm currently watching Mad Men, which is pretty delightful; as well as The Wire, which I'm going to start tonight (although I've seen episodes here and there).
Justified is really good as well, forgot about that one.
-
How about Justified. Season 4 just started a couple of weeks ago. I got season 1 and 2 for my wife. The price here is middle tennessee was 20.00 for seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 is still a bit pricy.
The series is set in rural Kentucky but I believe is filmed in California.
Great series.
-
Do some throwback:
Six Feet Under
-
Arrested Development. Trust me. :)
-
The Wire
If you are looking for serious, this is as good as it gets.
Game of Thrones
If you are into fantasy, this is as good as it gets.
If you're interested in a more scifi show, maybe Doctor Who, which I've recently gotten into thanks to Rob.
You may also be interested in The Sopranos if you are interested in a show with incredible scope and a large ensemble cast. Full of great characters, its only second to The Wire in that regard.
EDIT: also this
Do some throwback:
Six Feet Under
-
Sons of Anarchy
Game of Thrones
Fringe
Supernatural
House MD
-
Most of the ones I was going to suggest have been mentioned already. But I'll add The Shield.
-
I recommend all of these pretty much in order:
The Wire
Six Feet Under
Arrested Development
Game of Thrones
LOST
The Shield
The Sopranos
Dexter
Louie
Parks and Recreation
Community
Mad Men
Psych
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Seinfeld
House
Freaks and Geeks
Homeland
Luther
The Walking Dead
Sons of Anarchy
Firefly
24
Justified
-
House is indeed good enough to watch twice. I think I've watched the entire series about five or six times.
-
Came in here to recommend The Shield and I see HarlequinForest already did. :tup
-
Some very nice suggestion here, me thinks. Danke! Keep 'em coming! :tup
-
NCIS
-
Doctor Who
Farscape
Warehouse 13
-
The Wire
Farscape
Rome
Deadwood
Community
Arrested Development
Game of Thrones
Party Down
Parks and Recreation
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
-
Based on what you like this may come in handy:
Breaking Bad: Prison Break
Lost: Fringe
Battlestar Galactica: Firefly (You have seen Serenity but not Firefly? or do you mix those two?)
Band Of Brothers: Generation Kill and The Pacific
Monty Python's Flying Circus: Fawlty Towers :) and Arrested Development (Which i actually have not seen but i'm about to)
-
Game Of Thrones and Sherlock :tup
-
The 5 "Great Dramas" are:
The Wire
Deadwood
The Sopranos
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Those are all essential (you've watched Breaking Bad, so get on the rest of them!)
The consensus for the best comedies of the past decade or so are:
The Office (UK)
Arrested Development
After that there are a whole bunch of great comedies like Party Down, Archer, The Thick of It, 30 Rock, etc.
As for miniseries, you mentioned you liked Band of Brothers, so I'd definitely recommend its successor The Pacific, as well as Generation Kill.
-
Battlestar Galactica: Firefly (You have seen Serenity but not Firefly? or do you mix those two?)
I have both.
Monty Python's Flying Circus: Fawlty Towers :) and Arrested Development (Which i actually have not seen but i'm about to)
Yeah, forgot about Fawlty Towers. Love that one, too!
-
Battlestar Galactica: Firefly (You have seen Serenity but not Firefly? or do you mix those two?)
I have both.
Yea i thought so. :) You do not simply watch Serenity before Firefly ( Although i actually did! :blush).
-
Arrested Development. Trust me. :)
I second this. An absolutely hilarious show. Almost every line of dialogue is a joke. Incredibly well put together. Three seasons are out now and a fourth is on its way in May.
-
Babylon 5, The Newsroom, The Mentalist, Black Books, Doctor Who, Fringe (today was the series finale, sadly), Castle, Eureka, Life, In Plain Sight.
-
24.
The first five seasons were some of the best television of the past 10 years
-
yeah, I was going to mention 24, but I kept thinking about how it really started to get samey and trail off in the last few seasons. The first few seasons were excellent.
-
1 through season 5 of 24 were the best.
-
Arrested Development
Game Of Thrones
-
24.
The first five seasons were some of the best television of the past 10 years
If you do decide to give this a try, I'd suggest getting an entire season on DVD and watching it in a single day. Or, if you're really brave, you could try 7 seasons in a week :corn

That's what I did. :rollin
-
The first or the second? Because there's a big difference. I did 3 seasons in 3 days (not consecutively), but never 7 seasons in a week. Given how much caffeine and sugar I went through in those single days, I can't imagine going for a whole week. Still, very impressive.
-
Doctor Who
Farscape
Warehouse 13
I love this show! It's friggin' hilarious and does entertain. I only know like three people that watch it though.
My suggestions have been mentioned already....there are a ton of good series out there to keep one occupied.
A couple that are starting next week that I'm going to check out are 'The Americans' and that Kevin Bacon show 'The Following'
-
seconding (thirding? fourthing?) the nominations for:
Doctor Who
Firefly
Sherlock
Game of Thrones
do it.
-
Twin Peaks, if you haven't seen it yet. Probably my favourite non-comedy series of all time.
-

Obviously the first one.
-
I saw someone claim they watched every season of 24 in one weekend. The logistics don't really work on that.
-
Twin Peaks, if you haven't seen it yet. Probably my favourite non-comedy series of all time.
Absolutely this. There are parts of Twin Peaks that are a bit dated, but the core story is just :metal
-

yeah, considering it would take you basically 17 hours to watch each season (roughly 42 minutes per episode), it would take 3.5 straight days to watch just five seasons.
-
Dead Like Me. It's a damn shame what happened to that show.
-
Doctor Who
Farscape
Warehouse 13
I love this show! It's friggin' hilarious and does entertain. I only know like three people that watch it though.
Yeah, we just started watching last week thanks to Netflix. We have three episodes left to watch from season 3. We love it!
Also seconding Sherlock. I can't believe I forgot to mention it.
-
Game of Thrones
LOST
The Sopranos
Dexter
Sons of Anarchy
Firefly
Rescue Me
Deadwood
Throwback - OZ
Right now watching Prison Break.... it RAWKS :) I watched the first 2 seasons of Warehouse 13, but got bored after that.
-
Also, if you watch Sherlock and don't want to wait until your next deductive dose you can watch the american version - Elementary (it has Luci Liu as Watson). It's quite good, which to me came as a surprise. Not sure if it's out on dvd yet, the first season just ended a week or so ago.
One more +1 for Dead Like Me. I loved that show. Speaking of amazing yet cancelled shows - Raines starring the awesome Jeff Goldblum.
-

The Office (UK)
Arrested Development
Where is this consensus you speak of?
-
I'd definitely agree with GuineaPig's posted 'consensus' on comedies and especially dramas. While I'm not quite as enthusiastic as most when it comes to Arrested Development, those two do seem to be the most critically acclaimed comedies of the last decade, and it's not even close.
-
I'm an old man...I've been watching TV a long time. I have followed some of the funniest shows in the history of TV. Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, certain seasons of MASH....among others.
I'm telling you right now...please...if you want to die laughing (because I always do)....IMO, the funniest show in the HISTORY of TV is the British version of Coupling. There were four series...please watch them now.
At least half the episodes I have to pause my DVD player until the pain of my sides splitting with laughter have subsided.

Just what critics generally think. Here's Metacritic's (https://www.metacritic.com/feature/best-tv-of-2009-and-the-decade) '00s in review (for TV) compendium. Here's another list (https://www.avclub.com/articles/the-best-tv-series-of-the-00s,35256/) from a bunch of critics. The Office even gets a bit of a handicap because it's Britishness leads it to being excluded from some lists.
Generally, Arrested Development is viewed to be the funniest and The Office the most poignant/influential.

Ahh yea that is a good one! Haven't seen that show in a while so i didn't remember it at first. Richard Coyle was funny as hell! :lol

All of this (though I personally haven't seen past the first four or five episodes of Deadwood).

Deadwood is great

It's bloody fantastic, isn't it?
The head writer, coincidentally, went on to create Sherlock, which has been suggested a lot in this thread, and is also the current head writer of Doctor Who, likewise. OP - I'd recommend all three of them.
Spectacularly intelligent comedy, spectacularly intricate mysteries, or spectacularly exciting fantasy. Take your pick!
If you're interested in a more scifi show, maybe Doctor Who, which I've recently gotten into thanks to Rob.
Excellent!! How are you liking it?
-
Okay, I'll start with Game Of Thrones and The Office.
Some of the recommendations are quite expensive here in Germany, so I added them to my wishlist.
Thanks again, girls! :hat
-
If you're interested in a more scifi show, maybe Doctor Who, which I've recently gotten into thanks to Rob.
Excellent!! How are you liking it?
It's brilliant! I just finished season 6 episode 7: A Good Man Goes to War. Definitely my favorite episode of season 6 so far. I think it's safe to say that I've been enjoying it increasingly as I watch more. The highlight for me is how effectively the incredible diversity of some of the individual episodes are balanced within the telling of the larger story arcs. And as much as I love the episodes where the larger arc start coming to a head, it's the episodes like 'Vincent and the Doctor' tossed into the mix of it that make the show so special for me. Just out of curiosity, how does this reincarnation of the doctor compare to those of the older series? I absolutely love him, and I'm having a little trouble imagining any other Doctor.
-
Nice to see the love for Coupling. Sometimes I think that show gets overlooked just because everyone has moved on now.
I did know that Moffatt was head writer for Dr. Who, but I didn't know he was behind Sherlock....going to have to look into that now. I still think Coupling was his best work though.

Always the case! My first Doctor was Christopher Eccleston. He regenerated fairly quickly, and I decided that I hated the new guy within seconds of his first appearance. By the end of his first full episode, I'd forgotten the role was ever played by anyone else.
Certainly of the three modern Doctors, they're all impeccable actors, and they're all, for all their differences, unmistakably the Doctor. Each one puts a little more emphasis on different qualities - Chris was the tortured one, David was the slick one, Matt's the goofy one - but the actors get the role, and so a regeneration's never been anything short of an utter pleasure. Doctor Who is constantly changing itself, and renewing itself, and revitalising itself. If David hadn't left, we'd never have seen Matt Smith in the role, and as much as I'd love him to stay forever, if Matt never leaves, we'll never see the next brilliant interpretation. The show can be all things to all people at all times, and its lead actor, although completely vital to everything the show is and does while he's there, is ultimately just another thing the format's bigger than.
And yes. For all the excitement of following the arcs and such, Vincent and the Doctor is properly special.
Nice to see the love for Coupling. Sometimes I think that show gets overlooked just because everyone has moved on now.
I did know that Moffatt was head writer for Dr. Who, but I didn't know he was behind Sherlock....going to have to look into that now. I still think Coupling was his best work though.
That's an opinion I can fully get behind, because you're right, it is, it's properly fantastic. I've got no idea why it isn't repeated all the time.
Still. Just wait 'til you see Sherlock. It may very well not dethrone Coupling, they're both very different shows, but it's fair to say Sherlock inherited Coupling's saber-sharp wit and snare-tight plotting, and you could argue that it fits the new show even better.
Gusset.

Bicycle Saddle...
:P

Also if anyone's looking for something like The Office (or just any comedy at all really) I highly recommend Parks and Recreation. The first few episodes are OK but once it gets going it's really good. Gob from Arrested Development had held the spot of my favourite character in a comedy TV show for anlong time but Ron Swanson from Parks and Development is definitely takkng a run for it.
Seriously, check it out.
-
Thanks to this thread, I just watched the first 3 episodes of Coupling. I'm having a really tough time stopping now. It's absolutely fantastic! I'm now stuck in the giggle loop.
-

Noooo!! To know about the giggle loop is to become part of the giggle loop!
Also, the next two episodes are my favourites of the first series. Not that there's much between them - the first two are my least favourites and they're still pretty damned good. Either way, enjoy!
-
Also, I was just looking at my DVD shelves before, and realized I forgot to add in Extras, which I freaking love :lol

Agreed. Series 1 is brilliant...but 2 and 3 really hit their stride IMHO. Three especially is just non-stop laughter. Even though Series 4 lost something without Jeff...there are some absolutely brilliant moments. There's just not a bad show in the entire run.

Just started watching this. About 7 or 8 episodes in, very good so far :tup

If you liked Firefly, have you also checked out Joss Whedon's other shows (Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse)?
-
Watch the 13 episodes of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. It's a phenomenal journey. :corn

THIS.

Okay, yesterday, I finished Sesaon 1 of "Game of Thrones". Enjoyed it a lot and will buy more.
After that, I started with Season 1 of "The Office" (BBC) - but turned it off during the first episode. I knew the concept from the German 'clone' "Stromberg", of which I saw a few episodes and quite liked them. But yesterday, I couldn't get into it at all. Might give it another try one day.
-
I have classic Twilight Zone on DVD and I'm ploughing through season 4 of X-Files
-
NCIS.
Oh, and I just started watching the Walking Dead, and it's really good.
-
I like "The Following" lately. Story and acting are awesome.
-
I watched the first for seasons of Parks and Recreation last week. That was a fun show.
-
Anyone else going to give 'Defiance' on SyFy a chance when it starts next month? I am a sucker for post apocalyptic shows/movies so I'm going to give it a whirl. Plus it's set in my home town of StL so I have to at least give it a shot.
I've also DVR'd the first 'Bates Motel' on A&E. I think I might let a few episodes of that build up and then watch them in a row one night to try and get a feel for it.
Does anyone else who watches 'Community' think this season sucks horribly compared to past seasons.....I think it's been pretty bad, at least below what it was.
-

I've been marathoning Community since January on DVD, and I've been loving the fuck out of it. People have been telling me not to even bother with Season 4 once that comes to dvd though. Guess the showrunner leaving really did have a massive impact. Ah well. I'm enjoying what I have at least.

It's been a bummer really. I love(ed) this show. But, it's pretty tough to take right now. I guess like you said, no matter how big a dick that show runner was he apparently was the creative spark behind the scenes.
-
The only show I really want on DVD is The West Wing.
-
Community definitely isn't the same since Dan Harmon left, but I am still enjoying this season. I was afraid that the characters would fall into a parody of themselves (which happened for a bit of season 7 and 8 of The Office) or stay stagnant (a la The Big Bang Theory), but each episode thus far has kept me coming back for more. Given the storyline, I can't see how this makes it another season though.
-
I've probably already said it and it's probably already been said anyway but just to reiterate how awesome the show is, Curb Your Enthusiasm is a must-have. I'm rewatching the series and am currently on season 5 and it's a gut buster. Larry David is a genius.
Even if you don't watch the whole series, the episode entitled "Krazee Eyez Killah" needs to be seen by every man, woman and child on Earth. It is the epitome of what I love about David's humor and I don't think I've loved any comedy more than this episode.
-

Okay. Sorry, I know this is an old thread. But I just finished the first episode of Sherlock. OMG, it is so good!!!! I watched part of some random episode last year, was blown away; it's been in Netflix queue all this time (I was otherwise engaged for most of last year). :-\
Anyway, I've got time for it now and it is brilliant!!!! If you like the snappy writing of Coupling, you will appreciate Stephen Moffat's hand in this. This show is top notch.
Go watch it! :metal
-
Oh, and "Captain Subtext" ;)
Lots of that in Sherlock, as well!
-

O never really got the love for this episode. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But I loved every other Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. Maybe I need to give it another viewing. And yes, when it comes to comedy, between Seinfeld and Curb, Larry David is by far my favorite.
-
Sons of Anarchy
Game of Thrones
Fringe
Supernatural
House MD
All of these are natural options.
-
In the last 5 years I think Justified has been the best TV series out there. I just love this show. I've also been into Suits as well. Great storyline and great acting.
-
Oh, and "Captain Subtext" ;)
Lots of that in Sherlock, as well!
I think my wife and I are going to have to check this out. We both love Moffatt's work, and STID has turned us into fans of Cumberbatch.
-
A great show to watch with someone (as most are).
As I am on my own, I just kinda talk to myself when I discover the clues. Or enjoy the punchlines. :sadpanda:
