I'm looking for some new instrumental music. And I'm also a bit curious..
What's your all time favourite prog (or rock/metal) instrumental song(s)?
While I'm at it, I might as well mention mine:
When the Water Breaks by Liquid Tension Experiment.
-
I like Liquid Dreams by LTE
-
YYZ :)
-
Tetrafusion - Dark Matter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTGxqe1nnNk)
The rest of their debut album is instrumental like this. I definitely recommend it. :tup
-
Hyperventilate by Frost*
or La Villa Strangiato.
-
La Villa Strangiato
-
Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 1 or 2 - King Crimson
Birds Flying Into Buildings - Birds and Buildings
-
Liquid Tension Experiment - Freedom of Speech (for me definately the most beautiful and epic LTE composition)
Porcupine Tree - Mother and Child Divided
Metallica - Orion, Call of Kthulu, To Live is to Die (Qualifies as progressive in my book!)
-
yeah Metallica - Orion definitely qualifies as prog
-
Orion is the only Metallica song I enjoy anymore besides Battery. Really good song.
-
Off the top of my head:
Dominici - The Monster
Dream Theater - Eve
Explorers Club - Raising the Mammoth 2: Gigantipithicus
Focus - Hocus Pocus
Frost* - Hyperventilate
Liquid Tension Experiment - Freedom of Speech
Ozric Tentacles - Sun Hair
Pink Floyd - One of These Days
Porcupine Tree - Up the Downstair
Rush - YYZ
-
my list is too long, and i'm too lazy. so i'll just go with my favorite instrumental album. but that's still tough to figure out. so i'll go with my favorite essentially-keyboard-free instrumental album:
The Esseness Project. :metal :hefdaddy
-
Hyperventilate :metal

While I'm at it, I might as well mention mine:
When the Water Breaks by Liquid Tension Experiment.
Same.
-
Genesis - Horizons (a short acoustic guitar piece)

Tough one.
I can't say one, but these would certainly be good picks:
Porcupine Tree: Burning Sky, Mother and Child Divided and Signify.
But then I have loads of instrumentals I love that aren't exactly 'prog', so that kinda rules out a lot. :/
-
I cam narrow it to Top 5:
DT - "Instrumedley (Live)"
Herbie Hancock - "Chameleon"
In Flames - "Pallar Anders Visa"
Miles Davis - "So What?"
Van Halen - "Eruption"
Edit: Miles and Hancock are obviously too jazzy, so I stuck with just DT's Instrumedley. In Flames and Halen are just solely rock and metal. Not really prog. So yeah.
-
La Villa or Eve
-
I second Orion by Metallica. So epic.
I don't think Chameleon is prog, the Miles tune So What isn't prog either imo.
-
Guys? Why no Hindsight by Anathema? That's my favorite instrumental of all time :heart
-
La Villa Strangiato.
-
A few of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet:
Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) - Iron Maiden
YtseJam - Dream Theater
Los Endos - Genesis
Dialogue With the Stars - In Flames
and ELP's got too many but most of these are based on classical pieces anyway.
-
Leave That Thing Alone is probably my favourite Rush instrumental (although YYZ and Strangiato are great too).
-

I forgot all about it, but agree that it's fantastic.
-
Kansas - The Spider
Rush - YYZ, La Villa Strangiato
Dream Theater - Ytse Jam
-
Buckethead - Population Override
-
When the Water Breaks
-
One of my favorite instrumentals of all time.
ELO--Fire On High

-
Does Tool's Triad count?
-
When the Water Breaks
-
Buckethead - discography
Fixed.
-
Dream Theater - The Dance of Eternity
Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift, Acid Rain, When the Water Breaks, Universal Mind, and more
-
I also like Suspyre's "Galactic Backwards Movement"
-
Tetrafusion - Dark Matter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTGxqe1nnNk)
The rest of their debut album is instrumental like this. I definitely recommend it. :tup
Wow, this is awesome!
-
King Crimson - Discipline (You might love it, you might end up in the psychiatric ward)
Anglagard - All of it
ELP - Fanfare for the common man
Tony Levin - Relentless (I'm attending his concert tomorrow :hefdaddy)
Martin Orford - Power and Speed
Aghora - Anugraha
-
One that I haven't seen listed:
The Who - The Rock
-
Anglagard - All of it
You win. I forgot about Anglagard! But not all of their stuff is instrumental. Still, Jordrok is one of my favourites and I can't believe I didn't mention it.
-
Enchant - Prognosis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwb0Txs30dQ
you can all thank me later.
-
yes, all enchant instrumentals are pretty good.
-
Anglagard - All of it

I know, but it is hard for me to choose among them. I love it all!
-
Instrumedley.
Not strictly prog but
Vinnie Moore- Lifeforce
Andy Timmons- Groove or Die
Yngwie- Crying
I do like the widdly-widdly.
-
as for non-instrumental prog bands that like to do the odd instrumental song or two, i'd say shadow gallery rank pretty high up there when they go for it.
-
Imma just update myself here:
DT - "Instrumedley (Live at Budokan)", "Overture 1928", "Hell's Kitchen"
Suspyre - "Galactic Backwards Movement"
Rush - "YYZ"
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - "Wizards in Winter"
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - "Tocatta", "Karn Evil 9: 2nd Impression"
Anything by Apocalyptica.
-
Right now it is probably something from At the Dream's Edge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_The_Dream%27s_Edge)
My favourite tracks are Bad Code, The Mirror, Harvey Wallbanger, Terminus Pt II and Under One Sky.
-
Just saw this yeasterday & I must have this now. You might like it too.
Animals As Leaders - "CAFO"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmfzWpp0hMc
-
Dream Theater - Erotomania; The Dance of Eternity
Pink Floyd - Any Colour You Like; Terminal Frost
David Gilmour - Castellorizon
-
Steven Wilson - Collecting Space
John Petrucci - Lost Without You
Dream Theater - Hell's Kitchen
Robert Miles - Children (If it can be classed as prog. Technically it does progress...)
-
Hyperventilate for sure
-
Metallica - "To Live Is To Die"
-
Hyperventilate
-
My list would be filled with djent if I allowed it, but I don't really classify djent as belonging to the progressive genre.
Therefore:
Between the Buried and Me - Veridian
Dream Theater - Erotomania, Hell's Kitchen, The Dance of Eternity, Stream of Consciousness
Frank Zappa - Peaches en Regalia (more fusion-y, but eh)
Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift, Acid Rain
The New Caledonia - Electro Legs
Porcupine Tree - Signify, Idiot Prayer
Rush - YYZ
Scale the Summit - Age of the Tide
Out of those, it's pretty much a tie between SOC, Electro Legs, and Idiot Prayer. Depends on my mood I suppose.
-
While they are experimental and mess around with several different musical styles, Estradasphere are an awesome instrumental group.

King Crimson - Red, Larks Tongue In Aspic Part 1 and 2
Pink Floyd - One Of These Days

Spock's Beard - Skeletons At The Feast
Dream Theater - Hell's Kitchen
Metallica - Orion
Frost* - Hyperventilate
