Ah I posted this in the DT subforum, sorry if that was wrong :-\
Either way, cool!!! :metal
-
Ooo...That teaser did it's job.
Excited to hear this one. It'd be nice if they re-release Suspended Animation.
-
What? Huh? No way. JP doesn't make solo records anymore. Surely thou doth jest.
I am hype. God, I've been waiting years for this.
-
I'm really excited to find out if a JP solo album sounds any different from a DT album nowadays.
-
Ooh, I'm cautiously excited about this. I never found suspended animation very interesting, but I'm curious to see what he does this time!

Likewise.
-
That sample was brilliant! :lol
-
If this were 10 years ago I would be SO pumped, but I don't really connect to much of what he writes in DT for the last ....however many albums. So this biggest question will be (as Me7 pointed out) is if his solo album can have a unique voice from his DT writing.
-
I agree, but at the same time, I don't recall DT ever having stuff that sounded like Tunnel Vision or Wishful Thinking, so if there's anything like Tunnel Vision on this record, I will be a happy Katt. :corn
-
The secret project MP was rferencing the other day :metal
:rollin
-
I am more hyped for this than a new DT album, to be honest.
-
Bets on whether or not Cloud Nine appears on TV? :corn
-
Bets on whether or not Cloud Nine appears on TV? :corn
Why wouldn't it? Don't forget that he even resurrected Lost Without You for Suspended Animation, and he played that as his solo spot (along with keyboard accompaniment) for DT shows back in 1995. Or am I overlooking something obvious?

Well, I never knew that about Lost Without You. "Don't forget" - dude, I didn't even hear about Dream Theater until 2003. :rollin You'll forgive me for not having encyclopedic knowledge of Dream Theater/JP setlist trivia, Scotty. Furthermore, lots of artists play new material that doesn't necessarily appear on the next album, and Cloud Nine was last played years ago. Wintersun played The Way of the Fire many years ago and it's never been released, for another example. Sooooo....

Yeah :lol
Came to post exactly that! :lol

I never thought I'd see the day. I'm pretty excited.

Well, SA did come out in 2005, after you became a fan, and I know that there had been some discussion over how LWY had been played by JP years before in DT, so I don't think it would be too much of a stretch for expect someone like you to be aware of that tidbit of info. Regarding the other examples you cited, they ain't JP, so they don't really have any bearing on this discussion.

Sigh. I became a fan in 2003, but I didn't even post on a DT forum until 2011, and didn't come here until 2016 or 17. My point remains, I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of DT. That tidbit of info isn't even common knowledge amongst DT fans, my man.
Anyway....... greatly anticipating this record. Let's get a single!! :corn

It's been a LONG wait since JP first announced he was working on this (around 2010), so I'm ready, just drop it already :metal :metal :metal

Considering how many times new forum members join, here, and in the past MP.com and the Ytsejam mailing list, and then post about how they just became fans, not to mention how active you've been on here and MP.com, I would've expected you would have been on these forums by 2004. :P
That tidbit of info isn't even common knowledge amongst DT fans, my man.
That might be debatable, but whatever. You didn't know. That you've made clear.

Activity =/= knowledge, bro. Like, I know a lot about the band, but I don't know what JP ate for dinner on Christmas Eve 1994 for example like some people
-

Dude, that's common knowledge around these parts. You ought to know.
-
15 years though !
Who does he think he is ?
Adam Jones ?
But imagine if he'd literally kept the best song each year he'd written over the last 15 years aside and the album is those 15 tracks !!!! :omg:
I mean surely he's written TONS of material in 15 years and kept it aside right ?
-
K-Boy!
Hey, speaking of Adam Jones, you need to pop over to your Tool thread and give us your thoughts on Fear Inoculum.
-
1. Lateralus.
2. 10,000 Days.
3. Fear Inoculum.
4. Ænima.
5. Undertow.
Sums it up. It’s very good but not GREAT. Too many recycled riffs. Adams limited range is wearing thin.
There’s a guy on YouTube who does TOOL covers. And you see the same licks again and again and again.
-

I read "TV" as in "television" :rollin :rollin :rollin I was trying to imagine what could you possibly mean by that.

Mac and cheese bites with Jolt Cola, just as he does every Christmas eve. Kind of a weird tradition, but now you know.

I only really started to appreciate SA in the last year or so, so I'm very much looking forward to this.

I don't really like anything before Lateralus.
I put on Ænima on a bus ride to work one day and once you realise that nearly the whole album is mono - you get tired of it very quickly.
Seriously why have all guitars bass and vocals in the middle ?!
it's so tiring to listen to.

Do you think it's related to the liquid tension somewhat reunion ? Like there will not be a LTE4 but this album features guests and at least one song with LTE members ?
I don't think Labrie is in, since he was interviewed about how long he hasn't spoke to portnoy :D
Or maybe it's a G3 oriented album.
-
Is it me, or is 'Terminal Velocity' a completely meaningless (and boring) title?
-
It's not the greatest, it sounds exactly like something a solo prog guitarist would name their album.
-

Agreed. Not a fan of the title, but hopefully the album will be good.
-
Yeah it sounds kind of generic, but it's the music that matters in the end.
-
Distance / Time = Velocity
Terminal Velocity sounds like "Distance over Time 2: The final Chapter". A concept album that ties all the seemingly unrelated songs from DoT together. Maybe DoT was Metropolis Pt. 3 all along?
-
I like the title. I think it matches Suspended Animation well too. Two cool sounding scientific terms.
-
↑↑↑ Agree with that. I like the title. Maybe it's because I've been reading a book that uses that term a lot but I like it.
-
It's hard to name an instrumental album. Since the album really isn't ABOUT anything. So you can either go with something simple like this or something super pretentious. I'd say he did fine.
-

I mean, some instrumental music definitely is written to be about something, but given what we know about how JP writes music, yeah it won't be.

Speaking about it, I was surprised how Joe Satriani always composes with a lot of concepts in his mind. If you are curious, it's really nice to watch his track by track from his last album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djlxzscVq70
-
Joe's got some cool album titles in his catalog. Shockwave Supernova is one of my favorite titles.

As I big fan of Joe (I have all his solo albums), also one of his best IMO!
About the new JP album, really very excited about it! SA is almost perfect in my book.
-

Literally the most generic title for a solo guitar/shred album. I’m blown away there wasn’t at least one Shrapnel release with the same title.
Petrucci is the best though, he can name it whatever he wants.

I think it looks awesome.
Though a bit like modern Kamelot.

I'm really only posting here because I wanted to make sure I posted on both threads  . But seriously, I am so very excited for this album to come out! And the album cover looks very cool.

Not sure where the thread actually belongs though, since JP is very much a member of DT.

I'd say here, if only because we have long-standing threads for other DT members' solo material here, like JLB.

Missing the bonus track "Somebody's Poisoned The Water Hole" :)
Interesting that there's no keyboard player. Double interesting that MP is the drummer.

-
I think I missed it when this was first announced that MP was on drums for this......that makes me exponentially more excited about it.
-
Well now I'm definitely in.
I was worried MM was going to be the drummer. So this is more exciting for sure.
Also happy there's no keyboard player. Let it focus on JP.
-
This is major news.
I hope "Happy Song" is Cloud Ten.

I was taken aback by no keyboard player either until it was pointed out to me that there's no keyboardist on the first album either :lol
-
Was never expecting for MP to drum with JP again. I'm excited about this but I'm also a little bit disappointed. I thought maybe Thomas Lang or even Marco Minnemann would been good choices. Anyways, really stoked for this solo album! Loved SA.
-
Very cool that they collaborated again. I'm a buyer!
-
Just a trio, with Dave LaRue? I'm in.
Did Mike ever mention or even hint at this? I seem to recall him hinting at something special that wasn't his to announce, but I assumed that was Neal's new album.
-
JP missed some real hype opportunity by not naming one track Metropolis Part 3 :lol imagine the hype seeing that + MP as the drummer haha

I called it first

-

I still don't understand how people are surprised with this. Literally everything John has done as a solo artist has been in a trio format :lol
-
I’m very very happy with MP being the drummer in this album! Also now I truly believe in LTE 3.
-
Cool to see MP and JP together again. Not sure I have any actual interest in this release, but maybe.
-
Fingers crossed Kevin Moore makes a guest appearance on a song or two. It would be great to see JP, MP and KM collaborate again one day. That aside, JP and MP joining forces is exciting enough! \m/
-

Yea....I doubt JP writes his solo albums with "what can I do to please the super hardcore DT fans" as opposed to "How I can I write a cool album that I like?"
I doubt KM plays into that second one.
-
Super excited to see MP and JP collaborating on music together again, but I hope this doesn’t make MM feel slighted in any way. John probably wanted to keep this separate from DT hence why he went with outside musicians, but there’s a huge difference between “a drummer not in DT” and MP.
-
Just a trio, with Dave LaRue? I'm in.
I still don't understand how people are surprised with this. Literally everything John has done as a solo artist has been in a trio format :lol
Nah, less surprised with the TRIO, than the people.
-
Interesting that MP is the drummer of the album.
Positive points IMO.
1. It is a good opportunity for them to collaborate again.
2. Raises audience interest in the album by 100%.
3. It doesn't look as much as "a return from the good DT" as it would be LTE3.
Negative points IMO.
1. It is no longer a JP solo record. It is a JP solo record with MIKE PORTNOY ON DRUMS !!!!!!.
2. It will feed, once again, the idea that "DT without MP sucks". It is completely unavoidable.
At the end of the day, I think for JP and MP it's just "cool to collaborate again". But for the audience it is not just that and any attempt to think otherwise is innocent. But is cool that they can do it again.
Personally, I’m not so excited, as I don’t tend to be a fan of "solo guitarist albums". But I would definitely check it out.
-
But for those who are big fans of instrumental albuns focused on the guitar, this will be an interesting year.
Finally a new JP album (collaborating again with MP) and a new album by Kiko Loureiro (with Marty Friedman as a special guest).
-
This went from a might-casually-listen to an instant-buy for me when I saw LaRue on bass and, yes, MP on drums.
Only downside of the latter is that we'll have to endure the usual suspects whining that MP didn't do anything other than reach for his usual bag-o-tricks.
-
This is major news.
I hope "Happy Song" is Cloud Ten.
It definitely is but I wonder why he changed the name but not the "Scotty Doesn't Know" riff? I'd think that the riff would be way more of a problem than the title.
-
LaRue was on Suspended Animation, and MP + LaRue was his band for G3, so, other than the MP reconciliation, I'm not so sure what's surprising about this.
-
Doesn't surprise me one bit, but it's still extremely wonderful news! JP and MP together again. Amazing combination! :2metal:

I'm aware of that history; I just didn't see him revisiting like that. I don't know; it's not earth-shattering surpise, it's more happy surprise, but still.

Initial thoughts...
I was excited about a new JP release. I'm now more excited because MP is playing drums. Interested to hear the chemistry. Wonder also how much input MP had in the music or he was following the writing of JP.
Speculation time...
People are gonna wonder so I'll throw it out there. Will this be the beginning of a process for MP to rejoin DT? Maybe they all say "no" right now, but if this happens then a new LTE album is made, it could possibly pave the way for MP returning. (Disclaimer: I'm not saying I want MP to rejoin. I'm purely speculating.)
-
This shouldn't really be that big of a surprise. Plus, it sounds like a new LTE is going to happen. Sure, you're going to have the trolls shouting about MP rejoining DT but i'd be shocked if that ever happens.
-

Stop that.
-
I don't think this has anything to do with the idea of MP returning to DT. And I don't think MM is slighted because JP decided to work with MP. This is a collaboration with music written by JP, nothing more. It doesn't signal anything, it doesn't imply anything. I really don't know what the big deal is. MP is a fine drummer and he's the one JP chose to compliment his music on this release. And that's all.

Over JLB’s dead body. When MP plays on the next JLB solo album THEN I might speculate or get excited about that prospect.

That's how I see it. Even, when he played with the recent G3, MP probably wasn't free to do it, so he got Mangini.
-
Really looking forward to this album. My first time actually seeing JP and MP live was a a JP solo gig as part of G3 with Satriani and Vai. Dave LaRue was on the bass then too.

This is a collaboration with music written by JP, nothing more. It doesn't signal anything, it doesn't imply anything. I really don't know what the big deal is. MP is a fine drummer and he's the one JP chose to compliment his music on this release. And that's all.
Exactly.
-
LaRue was on Suspended Animation, and MP + LaRue was his band for G3, so, other than the MP reconciliation, I'm not so sure what's surprising about this.
That's how I see it. Even, when he played with the recent G3, MP probably wasn't free to do it, so he got Mangini.
I don't think so. It seems when it comes to live, JP likes to play with the current DT drummer. So up until 2010, MP was his man. After 2010, MM became the drummer for JP's solo band.
In the studio, it's a bit different. There, JP wants to distance himself more from DT, which is why on SA, he had Dave DiCenso play the drums instead of MP. I would imagine the same is true with TV, even if MP used to be in DT (he's not now).

That makes sense. Especially since any dates that JP plays as a solo act are blacked out for DT, so odds are whoever DT’s drummer is at the time would also be free.

Wasn't Marco Minnemann originally invited by JP for G3 in 2012? *went looking for it* Here it is:
Since I'm getting asked that a lot: No, I'm not going to be on John Petrucci's G3 tour this year. He wanted me to play the tour and also record on his new CD. But I'm fully booked with Aristocrats and Steven Wilson and had to refuse. But thanks so much for asking. I'll for sure be doing more stuff with Jordan or John in the future.
So Mangini wasn't really the first option for the solo band anyway. What I find weird now is that he did tour with John and Dave for G3 in 2012 and again in 2018 so he was JP's solo band drummer for a while, but still John went for MP to do the album (nothing wrong with that and I'm actually really excited about this).
Now it bothers me even more that SA doesn't have MP on drums as he's on every other JP solo release (TV and G3 Live in Tokyo) :lol
-
Setting aside the fact that it's great to see JP and MP collaborate in a project together again, that is an awesome power trio in all respects!
Really interested to hear this!

LaRue w/ MP in Flying Colors.
LaRue w/ JP on his solo records.
LaRue w/ many others on many projects throughout the years.
LaRue = awesomeness. He's an incredible bassist. Seems to be a great guy too.
This lineup makes for a great power trio! However, I'm sure JP wrote all the music, while MP & LaRue were brought in to play. Nevertheless, looking forward to the release.

https://www.loudersound.com/news/john-petrucci-says-working-again-with-mike-portnoy-was-a-lot-of-fun
John Petrucci has spoken about how he and his former Dream Theater bandmate Mike Portnoy reunited for the guitarist’s new solo album Terminal Velocity.
News of the partnership came to light last week, when guitarist Petrucci revealed on social media that Portnoy is playing drums on the album, while Flying Colors’ Dave LaRue is on bass duties.
Speaking to the Official Dream Theater Fan Club, Petrucci said: “Mike is playing drums which is really awesome. Obviously, Dave LaRue played on my first solo album Suspended Animation, who I also toured with many times with G3 – as in the past Mike Portnoy. We toured together with G3 as well. But, yeah, having Mike play drums on this is cool. It was a great experience.”
As for how the pair came back together for the project, Petrucci explains: “We’d been talking and he had planted the seed in my ear. I was telling him about my plans, and he said, 'Well, if you need somebody, I'm available.' I'm, like, 'I'm going to take you up on that.’
“I had written all the songs and we programmed the drums – I played bass, and our engineer Jimmy T played bass, so we had these final completed songs. Mike came in, learned everything and added his touches and taste and did a tremendous, spectacular job.
“It was a lot of fun to reunite musically and do that together. It took about six days to do. The drums sound awesome.
“Dave recorded his stuff remotely, redid all the bass. And it's mixed by Judas Priest’s Andy Sneap. It's my first time working with Andy, and he did a tremendous job mixing it.”
Terminal Velocity is expected to be released later this year on a date still to be confirmed.
The nine-track record will include Happy Song, which Petrucci debuted on a South American G3 tour in 2012 under the working title Cloud Ten, while Glassy-Eyed Zombies – which also made its debut eight years ago – will also feature.

Here’s an article from Billboard with a pic of John and Mike in the studio. Have to confess I’m getting a little nostalgic seeing them together like this.

Is there an official release date for this?

I'm assuming this was recorded in that new DT Studio that JP mentioned a few months back?

That photo made me smile.

Yeah, I highly respect Sneap as an engineer. No worries about how this will sound knowing he is handling both the mixing and mastering.

I guess so. It'd be very ironic if MP ends up being the first drummer to record at the DT studio :lol

Loved it. MP's predictable fills don't even bother me in this song. Sounds exactly like a JP solo song, nothing vastly different from Suspended Animation.

I REALLY enjoyed that song. Nice.

Nice song and the sound quality of it is phenomenal! I hope they use this team (recorded by James “Jimmy T” Meslin and mixed and mastered by Andy Sneap) for the next DT album. Me and Baby Yoda approved it :tup

These type of videos always come off as a little hokey. But it’s at least cool to see John playing it.

Nice song, but sounds like the same sort of approach as his first album which I don't find very interesting really.

since you mentioned it, I'll actually go and listen to it now. (since I never listened to the entire album strangely enough) I'll see if I agree with you. (possibly)

I agree. Love it.
-
If it sounds like the first album that's nothing but good news to me. Although, honestly, the first four tracks of SA are all you need imo. The rest are just bonuses, the first four are perfectly varied and awesome.
I'm gonna skip this and wait for the whole album to release.

JP received .007 for my two listens on Spotify! ;D

I thought the only cringy part was the MP with JP part

Not sure if people have noticed but, for those who don’t have it, Suspended Animation is now on Apple Music. Not sure if it’s available elsewhere.
New song sounds shredtastic on first listen and only 3 weeks until album releases. Unleash The Archers on 21st August and Petrucci on 28th, some serious shredding on the way!
Edit, just watched the video and it’s super boring. Watching a guy sit in a chair playing guitar and not even looking at the camera is not exciting to watch. It’s actually detracts from how fast paced and exhilarating the song is to see him play it with zero emotion.

JP is a big Star Wars fan, he’s mentioned it in the past, particularly when promoting The Astonishing.

It’s not a cartoon, it’s a live action tv show on Disney+ It’s not bad though if you like Star Wars that is!

I loved the Baby Yoda presence there. It was totally intentional, they even changed his spot in the studio for he could continue to appear in the video shots

My Star Wars appreciation begins and ends with the first movie.

So... you didn't even know Master Yoda?!

Well, yes. I saw The Empire Strikes Back at the drive in when I was a kid, so I do know who Yoda is. The only other Star Wars movie I've seen was the one that came out a few years ago with my kids. I can't remember the name, but it was a total rip job of the original movie.

Song is not that interesting, everything on Suspended Animation had more edge than this. I'm still getting the album though and pretty excited about the rest of it.
I think having Portnoy on this album is a very smart move on JP's part, from many aspect. I believe a ton of people are more interested to hear MP play with JP again than anything else, including me and I've been waiting for this album for years AND I like Mike Mangini just fine.

That's me as well. I like the track, but it still hasn't really clicked with me yet, despite multiple listens. Sounds like a bunch of cool parts that don't mesh that well with each other. Still, I heard previews for the rest of the tracks on the Itunes store and they all sound really good :metal :metal :metal

I listened to the song once already and MP is still using his bag of tricks. Can pretty much guarantee there'll be a fill where he hertas from the octobans all the way down to the floor tom.
-
Sounds pretty cool, nice hearing JP and MP making music again. :tup
-
Previews sound great. Snake in My Boot snippet starts of sounding like full on Edward Van Halen but, by the end, has morphed into something completely different. Looking forward to this a lot, my only caveat is the length of the songs. These are long songs for guitar instrumentals and I did find that an issue with Suspended Animation that many of the songs just went on too long and outstayed their welcome a bit.
As for Mike’s “bag of tricks”, I’m pretty sure JP knows his style and that’s why he hired him, great to hear them playing together. I’d love to know if any other drummer gets this level of scrutiny, do you guys listen to Beatles albums and listen to see if Ringo keeps doing new things on every record?
-
Well, the Ringo in Come Together is different from the Ringo in Can't Buy Me Love, so yeah. :rollin
-
As much as I hate to say it, that first song was very underwhelming. Hoping the rest is more interesting.

-
Ok, I’ll rephrase that, any other drummer who isn’t a member or former member of Dream Theater!
-
Sort of sounds like MP was directed on how to play on this album. The 'usual bag of tricks' might have been a bit restricted.
http://bravewords.com/news/dream-theater-guitarist-john-petrucci-talks-working-with-mike-portnoy-on-new-solo-album-i-m-really-happy-that-he-did-it
Petrucci: "What was really cool about playing with him - and when I say playing 'with him,' it's a bit of a stretch because I had written and recorded all the music and did drum programming. Mike learned the album and played it to my tracks, so we didn't really play it 'together,' but what I like is that he made it sound like we played together. His playing is very lively and energetic and off the cuff and spirited. So even though he had to learn pre-existing songs and listen to the drum programming that me and my producer, Jimmy T. (Meslin) had done, he was still able to interpret it in his own way and I think it brought the songs to life.
-
Same approach as with ADTOE.

Your first mistake here is thinking MP and Ringo are comparable beyond playing the same instrument

To be fair, Ringo was EXTREMELY innovative.

I’m not sure that I suggested any comparison beyond them both playing the same instrument. I don’t know The Beatles music intimately despite actually being from Liverpool, just asking the question whether people scrutinise drummers in their other favourite bands to this degree where they have to constantly come up with new fill and tricks 30+ years into their career.

As much as I hate to say it, that first song was very underwhelming. Hoping the rest is more interesting.
I’ve changed my opinion 180 degrees after having a good listen with headphones, I like it a lot and really dig MP’s drumming.

Honestly, loved hearing them play together again but the song itself was a little ...Blah...
-
"I understand where people are coming from with that. One of the concerns I had, a little bit - not musically at all - but about Mike, is I didn't want people to get the wrong idea.
"Mike Mangini has been in Dream Theater for 10 years now. How many albums did we do together already? Three? Plus two live albums. A lot of music and touring.
"So he's the drummer in Dream Theater, and I didn't want there to be any weirdness or misconception that, 'Oh, this means that Mike's gonna come back.' It's just not the case.
"I think that for me, in a selfish way, I get the best of both worlds 'cause I get to play with two of the greatest drummers in the world, in Dream Theater and with my solo stuff. And it's great for me as a guitar player - it's wonderful.
"I think it's really important for everybody's sake, for fans to understand this. I think it's important, out of respect for both drummers - for Mike Mangini and Mike Portnoy - that there's no misconstrued thing: 'Oh, this means something else.'
"This is him [Portnoy] playing on my solo album, which is a really happy moment for me.
"For me, I knew that that would kind of be part of the story - I accept that. So the best I can do is try to be as clear as I can. I don't want people to get the wrong idea.
"I don't wanna create any drama or weirdness because it's all positive. I made a solo album - finally, after 15 years - and I got my friend to play drums on it, who I haven't played with in 10 years. So that's the vibe."

Amazing. I've heard the song once or twice now, and while I liked it, I want to hear the whole thing before I feel like I can make any judgements on this song or the member's playing. It's still very exciting that JP is FINALLY releasing a new solo album this year, though I wonder if any of those ideas might have been earmarked for a future DT album, or if he has kept his solo-album ideas separate from DT-song ideas?

Plenty of food analogies in that one.
and allusions to punk (yes, punk, of all things), which I found absurdly hilarious. Almost Pythonian in some ways. (both that allusion and the review entirely)
-
From all the review, I think we can pick this as the most useful part of it:
"Particularly on “Temple of Ciradia,” easily the albums heaviest number, as the Portnoy/LaRue dynamic truly takes hold. As it does again in “Gemini”, capturing a grittier, heavy rock vibe with the main riff that fizzes past. After several brief interludes that echo early Velvet Revolver, waves of Flamenco guitar wash over you and its all-glorious good fun. Though, lest we forget its more somber moments found in the ballad “Out of the Blue” which hauntingly captures the spirit of Gary Moore. And yet, ‘Terminal Velocity’ continuously detours back to genial solos boasting a broad, pop-punk smile. Most notably in “Happy Song,” sounding as if Big Country instrumentally reimagined the Sum-41 hit “Still Waiting”."
It seems in line from what I've heard from those 1,5 minute samples from itunes. But I think Out of the Blue was more jazzy than bluesy. But, as a first review, it was kind of a missed oportunity...
Just an observation, here in DTF, we get used to kind of review the reviews, right? ;D

Only on song 2 and there is an undeniable chemistry between JP and MP. It’s the best I’ve heard MP sound in a long time, insanely good playing from them both.

It's on Spotify for me amazingly, as it's only 10 pm here.

Not just in parts, it's entirely a pop punk tune just with some shredding over the top. :lol
-
I'm loving this album. I am an instrumental fan anyway, but this is brilliant.
-
Yes I am also loving this album. Awesome stuff.
-
Happy Song sounds like a pop punk song in parts lol.
Not just in parts, it's entirely a pop punk tune just with some shredding over the top. :lol
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
-
I can't say I love it, but that's mainly because this style of "instrumental guitar showcase rock" doesn't generally interest me very much.
However, I do like it a fair bit, which is a positive surprise and within that particular genre it's one of the best things I've heard. JP's guitar playing is always fantastic and if anything there's a particularly nice charm and groove to so much of his playing on here which is very enjoyable. The production is also great - a very big, full sound which works really well. And finally, while in DT I'm just as happy with MM as I am with MP, for the more jam-oriented style of JP's solo stuff, I think it really benefits from how musical MP's drumming is.
So all in all, the style isn't really my cup of tea but it's a really good, enjoyable example of it anyway, and a definitely improvement over what I remember from Suspended Animation. Credit to JP!
EDIT:
Happy Song sounds like a pop punk song in parts lol.
Not just in parts, it's entirely a pop punk tune just with some shredding over the top. :lol
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Oh no, not at all. It's quite fun as a result.
Although actually it does highlight a part of why this type of guitar showcase rock isn't my cup of tea, which is that the songs almost all sound to me like instrumental versions of vocal songs. I almost always find this and JP hasn't managed to escape it. So it's enjoyable, but I always feel there's a lack of a focal point to really draw me in.
-
Pretty good album! The first track was a bit underwhelming, but everything after was very cool and interesting. I'll definitely have to give this one more listens.
-
I'll be giving this a first spin later today after work when I'm going for my run. Seems like good exercise music.
-
When i heard Gemini for the first time last night, I was like holy shit, this is the best music JP/DT has released in decades. And then I find that it actually is a song JP wrote in the 90's :lol . Okay so that makes more sense -- still an incredible track and likely worth the price of admission. Temple of Circadas also has some interesting stuff on it.
-
I hate the fact the physical disc is getting released two months from now. I have the CD pre-ordered. I won't buy it twice, so I am waiting. >:(

You can check it on Youtube if you wanted, it's also out on Spotify

Pretty good album! The first track was a bit underwhelming, but everything after was very cool and interesting. I'll definitely have to give this one more listens.
i was underwhelmed by the first track when I heard it a couple of weeks ago but enjoyed it a lot more replaying the album today as I skipped it on my first play through.

Bought it on amazon plus a signed physical copy. The latter will make a nice surprise when I forget about it and it shows up in the mail.

This is a good album but nothing hits me the same way the first four tracks on Suspended Animation do. Happy Song is probably my favorite at the moment. It's a very good record with loads of tasty JP guitar shredding, but it doesn't quite hit the highs of SA, at least not immediately - I'm listening to Tunnel Vision now and man, that is a masterpiece. Regardless, I'll be listening to this for years to come, so I'm very happy it's finally out there. I hope we get more solo JP stuff in the future, with more regularity.
-
I always expect very melodic lines by John and they are there, so that's good.

Same here. Fortunately I'm not too blown away by what I've heard so I dont mind waiting. I'm sure I'll enjoy it though

Same here. CD pre-ordered. I will just wait until it arrives. Got plenty other things to listen to right now.

You can listen on Spotify

My first listen was surprisingly (Petrucci is my favorite guitarist) pretty underwhelming. So far I think it’s decent but not great.
-
petrucci is very technically talented and knows how to write a great melody but man there was nothing at all that surprised me on this. mostly just checked it out for the hell of it and got about what i expected :rollin
not bad at all and it'll satisfy its audience plenty though

I finally listened to it on spotify, it was a great first listen! Gemini, Happy Song are awesome! I will listen to it again. I think this showcases what a great songwriter JP is (not that I didn't know that before).

Others maybe, but not me. I have no streaming accounts at all. If I can't get the music physically, then I buy digital as a last resort. Streaming doesn't even factor in for me. I'm weird like that.
EDIT: Well, I just noticed that the digital version showed up in my Amazon account (where my CD pre-order is). I guess the CD has Auto-rip so I could download the tracks and listen now if I want.

These are both songs he wrote a whole ago. Gemini is the 90s!

A new vinyl variant was just released through Newbury comics

Looks cool, but I'm waiting for the CD. Joined John's mailing list, but have not heard a word about pre-ordering.

I listened to the full album on YouTube. I just used the headphone jack out of my phone to a stereo RCA adaptor to the auxiliary input in the back of my house stereo. It works great, and btw the album is brilliant! :metal :metal :tup
I'll definitely buy the physical copy when released.

Cool album. A lot of elements I don't like in modern DT seem to have been dropped for more of what I find best in DT's music, and even a few surprises sprinkled in. MP sounds great, best stuff I've heard with him since Transatlantic's The Whirlwind. The tunes are fun, this really wets my appetite for LTEƎ
-
First impression is that I'm enjoying it more than the first one. It's really nice to hear JP and MP playing together again. So I think the nostalgia of that is lifting this album higher for me.
-
Listened to a few tracks and quite liked it.
Really enjoyed Happy Song. Does what it says on the tin!

Listening while working. Nice, uplifting vibe.

How did you order the physical disc? All the links that I've managed to find take me to downloads or streaming nd I don't want that.

In a way I'm happy about that. There's too much good stuff coming out right now.

I preordered my CD through lasercd.com (they have both CD and vinyl available) and they are still taking preorders if you want the physical disc.

I am really liking this album after a week. The Oddfather, Out of the blue, Gemini and the title tracks are the highlights for me, but pretty much every song has memorable or catchy bits. I'm not too fond of the last two, but they're still fine.

Yeah, this album is great. Not really an all-instrumental guy usually, but this one is awesome. And good to hear the Petrucci/Portnoy combo again.
