Didn't know that. I haven't seen them around for much longer than that, not that I pay close attention. I've been hanging out for OLED forever, and only just crumbled to buy my first LCD to replace my CRT.
I really wanted an OLED but they've still got some problems with vignetting and frequent bad displays. The technology just isn't mastered yet...besides, for a 65 inch OLED, they want $5,000. This TV should hold me nicely until OLEDs are affordable.
Yeah, I was hoping they would have made more progress by now with OLED, but I think it got bogged down by patents for a while, as most new technologies seem to these days. We'd probably have Star Trek replicators and transporters by now if it weren't for patent law.
The low yield is a real problem for matching LCD's price point right now, but that should improve with time hopefully. I hadn't heard about vignetting issues, which seems like an odd problem to me. I know there were also problems with the life of the colours (particularly blue), but I think those have been greatly improved now.
I just hate being stuck with such a weak technology like LCD when several better technologies have been created. I'm still fairly happy with my LCD though.
