I've suddenly become a huge Jimmy Buffett fan
« on: May 07, 2020, 08:11:34 PM »
Now, a friend of mine has been roasting me like a pig the last two days for this and I expect nothing less of the fine folks here at GMD.DTF as well, but I gotta say, this has been a wonderful discovery for me. This week I've listened to his entire Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads compilation and it was fantastic (although the first two discs were much more lively than the back two). Tonight I listened to his 1999 live album Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays which was just a blast. And then I went straight into License to Chill and found what is (so far) my favorite Buffett song, Window on the World, which I played half a dozen times in a row.

I played them while walking outside this fine evening, 65º, shorts, trying to enjoy the fresh air, and I gotta tell you, it was one of the most fun music listening experiences I've had in some time. I realize this officially certifies me as a dad and I'm going to wake up tomorrow with a beer belly and back pain. I already have a penchant for punny humor, so I've already got a foot in the door. Next is cargo shorts and dad noises in my favorite chair.

Anyone else not ashamed to say they like Buffett? I have literally not heard a single song I dislike from this man.

I think he makes fun music. When you listen to Jimmy Buffet, you step into his world and life becomes very carefree. To me, JB makes great music to listen to when the sun is setting on a summer day and you're driving down the highway with the windows down and no one else is around.

Yes. I like Jimmy Buffett too

I do not ever need to hear Margaritaville again in my life.

Otherwise, he has some cool songs, though I am not sure I could name more than 10. Come Monday and Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes are my faves.

This path leads to something like John Prine , same realm but a higher level.

On that note, I might as well take the time to mention Zac Brown Band, who has done a song with Jimmy Buffett called Knee Deep (and yes, it is a friken island song that you can listen to while drinking margaritas in the sun.)  Probably the only country band I listened to and follow.

Knee Deep

They also covered John Prine's All the Best as well.

I think Buffet is the kind of artist that you either give the benefit of the doubt to, or not.   He's known for the dumb shit - Margaritaville, Fins, Why Don't We Get Drunk And Screw - but he's a phenomenal songwriter in his own right, and some of the deeper stuff is really insightful.  I'm partial to "Son Of A Son Of A Sailor" for various reasons.

I also think that he's a lifestyle as much as music, in the way that a... Slayer is.   You don't go to a Buffet/Slayer show to hear intricate three part harmonies and syncopated contrapuntal percussion layers.  You go to have a couple beers and interact for four hours in a way you can't at work or, maybe, at home.   I've seen Buffet I think four times, and it was a BLAST every time, even if every single song didn't transcend me to a new astral plane.

I love him, but then again, I am a Dad, with a beer belly, and a bad back, and I wear cargo shorts and docksiders without socks in the summer, so take that into consideration.

Favorite track is "A Pirate Looks At 40"

As soon as my shirts arrive I will fulfill this request. An actual photo. One of my friends said he has 3 kids and isn't as much of a dad as I am now :lol I'll even make a margarita just for the photo.

I'm not quite at Parrot Head level, but I do like Jimmy Buffett.  Songs like Volcano, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Pencil Thin Mustache, and Fins etc,  are a lot of fun to listen to and make you want to open a cold beer or a mixed drink.  Great music to have when on a small party barge on the lake during warm summer nights.
As someone mentioned above, Son of a Son of a Sailor is one of my favorite Buffett Songs. What's really cool about Jimmy Buffett, is that he created his own genre. He's not country, he's not rock, he's just Jimmy Buffett.. 🌴

I may have yoinked on my promise because I got lazy and did not want to wash and dry my hair for a photo because I am 50% diva. The good news is that I will take one later with the second shirt. The first shirt is as follows

I'm going to wear a Jimmy Buffett shirt every day of ProgPower USA next year. Or Britney Spears. Or both.
