Yeah, Immortal might be their best (having Barlow is the main reason for me), but I thought that Epitaph was great.

I recall Steven Wilson being a big fan of this album, and how excited he was to be able to remix it. So far sounds quite interesting.

Damn, only now getting on the Viagra Boys hype train, and wow, these albums are fucking rad. So much energy, weird and original ideas and sounds, yet extremely catchy. Guess I've found a new band to spam in roulettes from now on ;D

I've heard Cave World, sorry.

It's a mixed bag for me but it's very fun, and probably the funniest album I've heard in a while.

Listening to the debut album from WITHERING SCORN, the new proggy thrash metal band from the Drover Brothers, Fates Warning's Joe DiBiase from Fates Warning, and Henning Basse on vocals. Pretty good stuff. Worth a listen.  :metal

Their debut album has Sports, which is just an amazing song. I'm just glad I've finally found a band that's making me excited to listen to music actively again, it's been a while.

...the new Anubis Gate is starting to click big time!
Yeah, that album is really great!

On the other hand the new Pyramaze might be the most boring album I've heard all year.

Thank you!  I agree, it's fucking tripe.  So disappointing.
And let's be honest, Pyramaze hasn't been good since Immortal.

Oof!  Can't agree with you on that one though!
I will say Epitaph was alright, but Disciples of the Sun and Contingent were both almost as bad as Bloodlines.

Oh, yes, this is good! Thank you indeed, Brian, for mentioning this, I had no idea the band existed...reminds me of what thrash bands were doing at the beginning of the 90s, slowing things down a bit. I like that it sounds quite chunky, but still with a lot of dynamism. I maybe wish they would stretch their legs a little more with the riffing (as they threaten to do in some spots), but I have enjoyed my first listen. Great vocals and great playing, and it's so good to hear DiBiase again!

Ah! Some good old school Paradise Lost! What sparked it? Doing a PL marathon? If so, let me know, I'm on board

As for the last few listens:

Already commented on Taylor Swift and Withering Scorn elsewhere...

The Twisted Tower Dire album is excellent...I had read about it a few times, and finally got around to hearing it. Great US power metal. And the last one is Vaelmyst - Secrypts Of The Egochasm...very good (melodic) death metal record from 2021...I wouldn't say "melodeath" (as in the "codified" definition of the genre), but simply, um, death metal that's quite melodic

I knew this was Nick bait and you wouldn’t be able to resist commenting. Basically I have smart playlists on my iPod which will auto fill with songs I’ve not listened to in a good while. That’s what sparked it. I went through a bit of a Paradise Lost phase like 5 or 6 years ago but only spin the odd album every now and then now.

Tonight..

 :metal :metal :metal

 :metal indeed!

This is really good. It's grown on me a ton. The guitars' interplay is brilliant, my favorite thing about the record. By the way, if you are in the mood for something along these lines, maybe a little folk-ier in the melodies, check out Inexorum - Equinox Vigil, from last year. The guys in it are also part of Majesties.

It doesn't list a drummer. They must be programmed?

Yep, they are definitely programmed on the Inexorum album. I'm pretty sure they are on the Majesties record too, but I haven't found a definitive statement on that  ;)

The other musician in Majesties is Tanner Anderson (he is credited with vocals, guitars and drums), who's also the main guy behind the band Obsequiae, which is super-cool too - check out, for example, their album Aria Of Vernal Tombs

Man, this thing is relentless...maybe a little too relentless, in that by the end (40 minutes or so, not loo long really) it all starts to blend a bit, with the constant pummeling. Still, it's thrash metal with some great riffing and more extreme vocals (not too much, think along the lines of Lamb of God's Randy Blythe). Very good guitar solos too.
