Title: OCEANSIZE SPLIT UP
Post by: cyberdrummer on February 25, 2011, 05:04:20 AM
FROM TWITTER/FACEBOOK:

'Dear Friends,

We regret to inform you that Oceansize has split up.

An explanation for this occurrence is neither forthcoming or indeed necessary.

All that remains is to say THANK YOU for being there for us. It's been a very eventful and life-affirming 12 years.

We'll miss you.

There will be more music from each of us as soon as possible.'

That made me laugh probably more than it should have.

Anyway that's pretty crappy news. Although the announcement is very mysterious, especially the "An explanation for this occurrence is neither forthcoming or indeed necessary" part. Wtf.

I know, when I interviewed them last October, they all seemed pretty happy and were planning for the future. Must have been one hell of a bust up.

This is the worst day ever. :(
The best band is no more.  :'(

I've heard whisperings of this and I'm not that surprised.

I'm sad I will never see them live again but this band changed my life, they are SO important to me and their music ALWAYS will be. All that needs to be said is to thank them for everything they've done.

To the future.

Did the rumours speculate about any potential reasons for it?

No they did not and frankly I don't care about the reasons. If they ever want to tell us why they can and if they don't that's equally fine with me.

The speculations has been going on for some months now, so not that surprising really.
Anyhow, I'm not sure, but my guess is that something (pretty huge) is the reason, my main reason for believing so, is that they had invested money in a new studio, and Self Preserved was pretty much a turning point sound-wise.
Quitting just after that wouldn't make much sense, so something must have happen.

I hold Biffy Clyro responsible until I know the official reason.  :P

Not trying to troll, but I've given this band MANY tries and they never did anything for me. I can just never get into them, not matter how much I try.

Having interviewed Steve back in October I can categorically state that Biffy Clyro have nothing to do with Oceansize splitting up  :P

The thing that really rankles is that we'll never get to see OAS live.

and Quadro: Your fuckin' loss mate, your fuckin' loss

It's always sad to see a great bad with tons more potential break up. A sad day indeed.

Likewise. I adore Heaven's Alive but I can't find much to cling onto across the rest of that album. Downloaded the preview track (SuperImposer?) when Self-Preserved was being launched, but still nothing. Ah well.

Still a hell of a shame that they've split up, though. As Space Invader said, clearly tonnes of potential, clearly a group of very talented musicians, and it's just dissolved seemingly overnight. Hope they're all well and that they all go on to do fantastic things.

Not like the band owes the fans anything, but I still want a reason.
Them just calling it a quits just doesn't make sense.  :sadpanda:

Maybe one day we'll get one.

I might ask Mike or Steven when/if I see them again although then again I might not.

I guess this is when I'm supposed to appreciate the things they've done, look positive on the future but it's just too hard.
I just can't help but wonder how many more fantastic albums and songs we could have gotten, something we'll never find out. :(

It's a bit sad that not more people on this forum knows about them, hands down the best Progressive rock-band I've ever gotten the opportunity to listen to.
Frames will remain probably the nr1 album within the genre for me, it's just both timeless and perfect.  :heart

Oceansize & McClusky Team Up To Blow North Americans Away

    * story Jeremy P. Goldstein

A tag team event will soon be heading to a major metropolitan area near you. If you like guitar music, especially guitar music played by the British, you could do much worse than the pending Oceansize and McClusky jaunt. The two label mates will embark on their first proper North American tours, after having played a handful of dates in the States prior, at festivals like CMJ and SXSW. Both bands are supporting records, with Oceansizeís excellent guitar-wrangling debut Effloresce, in all its triple-axe glory, finally hitting shelves today, while McClusky also release a new album this very day, their fourth, the Steve Albini-produced the difference between me and you is that iím not on fire (what a great title!). The two-and-a-half week jaunt will initiate in Seattle on June 4 and will continue through until a June 22 date in the Big Apple. Get out and watch the rock!

Oceansize/McClusky tour dates:

06.04.04 – Seattle, WA (Crocodile Cafe)
06.05.04 – Portland, OR (Dante’s)
06.07.04 – San Francisco, CA (Bottom Of The Hill)
06.08.04 – West Hollywood, CA (The Troubadour)
06.11.04 – Denver, CO (Larimer Lounge)
06.13.04 – Minneapolis, MN (7th Street Entry)
06.14.04 – Chicago, IL (Schubas)
06.15.04 – Newport, KY (Southgate House)

It's one of the first things I want to do. We should be celebrating their achievements, not wallowing in grief.
Title: Re: OCEANSIZE SPLIT UP
Post by: Zantera on February 27, 2011, 11:41:59 AM
It's kinda hard for me.
Sure, all their studio-albums are fantastic, their EP's are as well, overall I doubt I'll ever find a band where there aren't any 'lowpoints', and where everything is that mindblowing.
But, I can't help but wonder what music we could have gotten in the future, instead we get 20-30 sideprojects, where I can't say I'm intrigued by a single one yet. :/
I guess Oceansize kinda brought everyones influences/ideas into one mix, maybe why they sound so unique.

I'll probably wait a few years before I listen to them again, mostly because I would think "yay for these guys throwing away something amazing", but eventually after some time has passed, I won't give a shit anymore, and then I can probably listen to it without caring. :P

A few years?

I think you're taking this a little seriously.  I mean, every band breaks up some time, and it's not like over 10 years, 4 albums, 5 EPs, and a massive and amazing live box set is a short lifespan.

On the contrary to you, I'm listening to Oceansize more than every now!   :metal  It was great while it lasted.

A few years isn't much.
I think I reached somewhere along 1,7k-1,8k plays with Oceansize within 4-5 months, which is a pretty high number.
Giving something a rest for a year or two isn't rare for me, I've done it with Opeth and Porcupine Tree, and I go after the philosophy that "Why only listen to stuff I already know, when there's so much more out there?", so I pretty much try to constantly explore new stuff.
Obviously I go back to stuff I love also, but I think it's necessary to let it rest for some time, because otherwise the magic will never come back, at least not if I've overplayed it.
