I never understood this argument. Just because a band is crazy and all over the place doesn't mean they can ignore the flow and dynamics of their songs. Indeed, what makes crazy, spastic bands like that great is that they're able to synthesize all these wildly contradictory styles into a song that works. A statement like "oh well they're a crazy band so who cares if something sounds out of place" totally misses the point.

Agreed.

I really don't see where you guys are coming from with Swim to the Moon, its a pretty cohesive and solid song...  Not to mention amazing.

1.  They're not a metalcore band.

Oh, then that's on me. Everyone I know who has listened to them has described them as such. And by their pictures, they sort of look the part.

they are like every genre, lmao

Sometimes they are thrash, sometimes they are metalcore, sometimes they are prog death, sometimes they are tech deth, sometimes they are deathcore, you never know

It totally is. As I've said before, I've heard STTM at least a dozen times and still have no idea how it goes besides the chorus and the very beginning. It's bland and forgettable, simple as that.

A-yep. When they played it live I had never seen a crowd's energy deaden as quickly as it did when that intro hit. About two minutes into the song a lot of people in the back were chanting for "Mordecai". On the flipside everyone was rocking out to "White Walls". The energy was off the charts.

Yeah White Walls is fantastic live. It has every component of a good live song; a great intro, heavy parts, soft parts, crushing breakdowns and that outtro. Everything a live audience could want. I can imagine a crowd not really knowing what to do with themselves during Swim to the Moon.

I'm seeing them twice next month, but I'm worried that they'll be playing the EP in it's entirety as part of their set, which they seem to have been doing in the States. And if it's the same setlist for both nights...I'm not sure I can handle that much Parallax. I'm holding out hope that they'll play Colors in it's entirety for one of the nights, but I know that's pretty wishful thinking

TGM is getting such a shitting upon it though, its getting annoying.  It'd be like people telling me liking Death's The Sound of Perseverance more than Human is really stupid and not valid.  I'll chill though, my siblings also just happen to be little shits right now and are making a complete mess of my basement before our parents get home after I had my friends pick up all their stuff!  >:(  annoying stuff I tell ya.

I love TGM. It's one of my favorite BTBAM albums. And, with all due respect to Orcus, I don't really care if he doesn't like it. It doesn't alter my viewpoint at all. Which is why I don't get defensive. Who cares if it gets shitted on if you like it? That's all that really matters.

Why do you keep insinuating I bitch when people give differing opinions?  I'm completely fine with it, but when people just keep saying the same thing over and over after something it gets old.. :chill

Moving on, I've come to love Informal Gluttony off of Colors, its definitely up there in favorite songs along with Obfusication.

The closest thing to self indulgent about STTM is the length of the song. It's actually pretty well put together and nowhere near as random as people make it out to be. It's just easy to pick on because its seventeen minutes long.

i'd say that makes a lot of sense.

Just because a band is crazy and all over the place doesn't mean they can ignore the flow and dynamics of their songs. Indeed, what makes crazy, spastic bands like that great is that they're able to synthesize all these wildly contradictory styles into a song that works. A statement like "oh well they're a crazy band so who cares if something sounds out of place" totally misses the point.

i'd say this is not only spot on but also well said.

and on the topic of TGM dislike, i just don't get how people that love colors or parallax so much can absolutely hate on TGM. i mean, it's not THAT different than its predecessor or its successor. now i can see, you know, not liking it quite as much or whatever. but to outright hate it(?) just seems odd.

and on the topic of the full length follow up to parallax...i was really pumped half a year back that they'd both be out this year...sure doesn't seem like its happening. oh well, the first thing to look forward to in 2012, i guess.
(actually, that reminds me how dan's other band was s'posed to have a follow up out this year. the lack there of makes me a  :sadpanda:)

TGM to me is kinda like the newer DT albums in that many of them have really cool sections but I can't pick really any whole songs I think are great. "Mirrors" and "Desert of Song" are pretty cool, though.
