Grammy Awards 2015: Kanye West Slams Beck's Win Over Beyonce (https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/grammy-awards-2015-kanye-west-slams-becks-win/story?id=28823240)
Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it
Why won't this guy just go away? The South Park caricature needs to happen all over on other shows because this guy is just a grade A a'hole.
-
That guy really likes Beyoncé.
-
That guy really likes Beyoncé.
Funny. I was thinking that too. Jay Z envy?
-
Maybe Beck should actually give the award to the recording/writing team behind Beyonce's songs. You know, the people with the actual talent.
-
I chuckled my ass off, on one of the only moments I was watching the circus show farce they call the Grammys. When Beck was on stage for his album of the year award, Kanye gets up and heads up on stage like he's gonna commandeer the mic, then makes like "nah, I'm just fuckin' with you" and goes and sits back down, making fun of the time he did it to Taylor Swift. I thought it was pretty damned funny. Now the Beyonce commentary? Meh. Kanye being Kanye.
-
I have no use for Kanye. I thought what he did on the show was kind of funny, but this answer he gave is disrespectful to Beck. I doubt if he's even listened to Beck's album. And even if he has, who gives a fuck what Kanye thinks?
-

Apparently all of you responding in this thread to it.
-
Kanye only has one thing on his mind: Kanye.
If something isn't about him, he is going to make it himself. Regardless of how much of a douchebag he comes off as.
-
Do you think he likes fish sticks?
-

Right.
-
Well, obviously. It couldn't possibly be because it's kinda fun to get together and talk about what an asshole he is. That would not be respectful of him as an artist.
:rollin :rollin :rollin
Sorry, I just couldn't say that with a straight face.

This Just In...
This Summer Kanye is staging a 3-day Music Festival called KANYE FEST where he will be every act.

If he wants to do something like that, by all means, he should do it. He will probably get exhausted after four hours of the 1st day. And then, he let the backing tracks and autotune drive the show.
-
Do you think he likes fish sticks?
Only if Beyonce makes them. If anyone else makes them, he gets mad and goes into a tirade about how Beyonce makes the best fish sticks of all time. OF ALL TIME!
-
I guess every music community needs its "Kanye West is literally Hitler" circlejerk thread.
-
And from that comment, it would appear that every music community needs its one token Kanye fan.
-
Wow. This forum sure likes to bring up Hitler.
-
And from that comment, it would appear that every music community needs its one token Kanye fan.
Well there's definitely more than one fan of Kanye here.
-
^ Yes. Kanye posts here.
He has 5 accounts.
-
I think Kanye is just being jelly.
-

Kanye has a few great albums.
He's still a first-class jackass, but at this point, I think his antics are amusing to watch at least.
-
And from that comment, it would appear that every music community needs its one token Kanye fan.
Eh I actually don't like him that much, although I do kinda enjoy his music and think he's quite talented. I just think it's become as overstated as "lol justin bieber is the worst amirite guys" at this point.

We are talking about a specific incident that nobody in their right mind would defend. The first time was a smh moment, the repeat was a "damn this dude has problems" moment.
-
Well there's definitely more than one fan of Kanye here.
My condolences. Even Molly Ringwald hates Kanye:

-
Or she hates the circle jerk of hate :P
-
That guy really likes Beyoncé.
Not enough to put a ring on her.
-Marc.
-
Kanye Pest.
-
I love My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It's a great album.
Kanye's still a knob though. I would have loved Beck to subvert expectation and scissor-kick him off of the stage.
-
Or she hates the circle jerk of hate :P
I don't care one way or the other about his music (I thought his performance at the Grammys was interesting). The only thing any of us are talking about is his asshatedness. Even the fans of his music have to get a little tired of his pretentious arrogance at times. I've read mulitple interviews from him, going back several years, and he never fails to give the impression that he is quite taken with himself, and thinks that the only valid opinions are Kanye's opinions.
-
Me no care about both of them....
But, I do enjoy Kanye's album MBTDF.
-

This. At least, he makes some great music.
-
I haven't intentionally listened to Disturbed since my little incident with David Draiman on Twitter a couple years ago, but I do still enjoy their music. I just don't like piece of shit Draiman. That being said, I don't understand when the Kanye defenders show up in here. No one is talking shit about his music, just him. He's an egotistical douchebag. He might make enjoyable music to some people, but his fans can't deny his asinine arrogance.
If he lost the ego, he might be a decent person. He was kinda funny in the Anchorman 2 fight scene.
EDIT: The Taylor Swift thing was more than 5 years ago? Holy crap.
-
EDIT: The Taylor Swift thing was more than 5 years ago? Holy crap.
Douchebaggery really affects that rear view mirror perspective.
What is even funnier is that Taylor Swift's entire career feels less than 5 years old.
-
I am pretty sure West wouldn't know what real art and creativity was if it bit his wife in her gigantic ass. I'd say he is contention with Axl Rose and Geoff Tate being the biggest asshats in music, if I considered him a legit musician.
-
In prog circles, we have Geoff Tate. Talented as can be, but he's such a tool Home Depot can't contain him. Kanye is just more relevant than Tate ever was.
-

Nah, I remember getting a rubber ducky signed by her at the beginning of high school, when she was still playing dinky little county fairs in the middle of nowhere in Kansas.

Beck's response to Kanye:
"I was just so excited he was coming up," he told US Weekly during the Universal Music Group after-party. "[West] deserves to be onstage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?"
"I thought she was going to win. Come on, she's Beyonce! . . . You can't please everybody, man. I still love [West] and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does."

-
I love his music....Doesn't mean I like him as a person.
-
Why is Kanye so obsessed with Beyonce anyway?
Also, that Beck album is pretty awesome.
-
Kanye is gonna get fucked by Zenu.

Yes. That only makes Kanye's move look more pathetic.
The most laughable part is Kanye brings up artistry. Even people that don't like Beck respect him as an "artist".
-
Why is Kanye so obsessed with Beyonce anyway?
I'm sure it goes deeper than this but he did bring up being up against white artists as a reason why she may have lost.
-
The Grammy's does not care about black people.
I'm sure he'd say it like that too judging by his grammar skills in that article.
-
It really baffles me how anyone can still appreciate his music at this point. The one time I did try listening to him, I had to turn it off after about five or ten minutes because I couldn’t get past the fact that I was listening to the same specimen of human sludge who pulls shit like this time and time again.
-

Calling him human sludge when there's people like Burzum who are actually racist pieces of shit is hilarious. Yeah he's an asshole, but unless he's out their murdering little puppies, I can look past the fact that he's an ass and just enjoy the music.
-
“As long as he ain’t the absolute worst mankind has to offer, he’s fine by me”.
I guess I just have a pretty low threshold for this kind of thing.

If we started boycotting every asshole out there, there wouldn't be much left to entertain us I reckon. So what he's an asshole who says some silly things Beck shrugged it off so why everybody has to circle jerk about it I just don't get it.
-
Kiss’ Paul Stanley said “Beck should’ve kicked Kanye right in the nuts last night and said Get the f--- off MY stage!” :tup

Hell, I don't mind Lie: The Love and Terror Cult, so I think I can officially say I don't really have much of a threshold for that stuff. :P Music is music. I always try to separate artist from art.

Beck must really love MBDTF ;D

I'm pretty much in line with this. He's an undeniable asshat, and totally deserves to be called out for it, but that's no reason to shit on his music for it.

What circle jerk? He acted like a douche following a very major public event, and people are commenting on it. What else would you expect?
-
I wish Kanye could actually see how much of a fucking idiot he is. Trying to school Beck on artistic integrity is like trying to show Bill Gates how to use Windows 95.
Kanye made two classic, influential hip-hop albums in College Dropout and MBDTF but he's such a stupid, narcissistic, colossus of a cunt that a lot of people don't want to give a shit about his music. He's his own worst enemy.
-
If i was Beck I'd just be super nice about the whole thing.
A. It makes Kanye look even worse.
B. I'd know that I'm the superior musician.
;D

He was actually. You should check out his response. He was a lot nicer than I would have been.

Yes I saw it :)
That's what I would have done. You come off looking like the bigger man. Even if you only respond like that to appear like the more professional one -
it's Win / Win.

He does come off looking like the bigger man. I guess I have issues holding my true feelings in if somebody irritates me. :lol
-
Yes but even if he knew that he would look like the bigger man and that was his only reason for saying it - it's still win/win.
Like - if I was in a famous band - and someone came up to me in the street and went " your band is shit  "
I'd just go " Oh Thanks very much :) " .
Then what ? They will be expecting you to go on the offensive and won't be expecting it and will have no more ammo :lol

If I was in a band and someone came up to me and said that, I would probably be like "oh yeah, where's your band?"
But I'm a wise-ass so that can't be helped. :lol

I know this is subjective, but there's a reason it seems inescapable to me with Kanye West.
Mingus was an angry bastard, and once punched one of his trombone players in the face and broke the guy's tooth, crippling his playing ability. But a) when I listen to Mingus, he's playing bass and piano. His fist isn't coming flying out of my speakers. And b) his emotional and mental imbalance was something that deeply troubled him, he saw a psychiatrist about it.
Miles Davis said a lot of pretty racist things. But a) I put on his albums, and he's blowing into a trumpet and never says a word. And b) for an apparently racist jazz bandleader in the 50s/60s/70s, he freely surrounded himself with and befriended a fair few white guys.
Ultimately, when you put on a Kanye album, a) the centrepiece is that very same voice that we've heard saying ridiculous shit, about which b) he shows no remorse that I'm aware of beyond a few token publicity apologies. The degree to which I can create a distance between the artist and the art, and the degree to which I feel I should even try, is hugely reduced.
-
I love that story about Kanye yelling at a guy in the crowd at one of his gigs - but his mic had the auto tune on so it sounded hilarious.

To be honest i've never looked. I've just heard about it. :)

Since there idoesn't appear to be a Grammy thread (I could start one, but meh), I just wanted to offer that I'm appalled that Tenacious D won best metal performance. That was a complete abortion of a classic Dio tune. With a f*cking recorder solo, to boot.
-
Tenacious D are fucking shit.
FUCKING. SHIT.

I did see that. The idea that they gave an award to a parody group speaks volumes about how much meaning to place on the award at all.

If you were try and create appeal for Beck amongst Steven Wilson-inclined DTFers, Sea Change would be the way.
Plus, of all the music of his I've heard (Mellow Gold, Odelay, Midnite Vultures, Sea Change, Modern Guilt, and the odd song off Guero and his latest), nothing touches this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrTl5iUF6FY
-
Tenacious D are fucking shit.
FUCKING. SHIT.
It was absolutely terrible Dio cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRZQpTmEBoQ
Now, consider that they won over Mastodon, Motorhead, Slipknot, and Anthrax. Anthrax's nomination was for their cover of Sabbath's Neon Knights, from the same Dio tribute album as TD's offering:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp77usK-B0A
THAT is how you cover a Dio tune. Absolutely freakin' awesome.
I did see that. The idea that they gave an award to a parody group speaks volumes about how much meaning to place on the award at all.
Yep, it's almost like this was done on purpose, as a snub to metal fans.
-
I was a fan of Ronnie Rising by Metallica. Thought James sounded great on that.

I hadn't listened to it now, and it's typical Jack Black doing a impersonation of a metal singer in a way lower key. One of my favourite Dio tunes too, but for this to win is a joke.
-
A RECORDER SOLO!!! F*ck you, Tenacious D. In the ear. Long and hard.

EDIT:

I should check this album out. From the track listing it sounds like a fantastic lineup, aside from TD.
-
I'm listening to the Anthrax cover of Neon Knights right now. Really good, and much better than the Tenacious D crap. Not that I'd give the award to a cover song either way.
-
Right, it seems like an original is maybe more deserving, but yeah, cover or not, Anthrax was easily way more deserving.
-
No cover should get nominated for best anything, much less win.
-

Agreed. I feel like with all of the great musical talent in metal, it should NOT be hard to find someone more suitable of getting the award. It's like someone in the academy just doesn't give a shit.

FTFM.
That sums up the Grammy Awards ;)
-
At the end of it all, what the f' should we care whether or not rock/metal gets the recognition from the Grammys?
-
Am I the only one who just generally assumes that Kanye's whole schtick is an act? It just seems to function all too well as an image for him. In my unprofessional opinion, getting a reputation for having a huge ego boosted his name recognition and popularity.
-
For his sake, I hope it's an act.
If that is for real, he could probably use an ass-whipping.
-
If i was Beck I'd just be super nice about the whole thing.
A. It makes Kanye look even worse.
B. I'd know that I'm the superior musician.
;D
If you watch the clip, after Kanye fakes rushing the stage and turns back around, Beck actually gestures for Kanye to come on up. He's got this look on his face that says "Hey man, no really, come up here!"
Beck either thinks so quickly that he can respond to Kanye in exactly the right way to make himself look quite gracious and classy, or he really is quite gracious and classy. I'm not a huge Beck fan, but from what I've read, he seems like a nice guy, very humble, so I think his reaction was genuine.
-
Agreed, he looked like he really (surprisingly) DID want Kanye to join him.
-
You could see a grin on Kanye's face for a second, looked like he was totally just messing around.
-
Right, I noticed that immediately, when it happened. Bonus - if you watch, you can even see Prince chuckling in the background. If you can get Prince to laugh, then it was funny.
-
Slipknot should have won the metal thing.
And that E-Pro song by Beck is pretty awesome, I don't hear it too often and keep forgetting about it, but whenever it comes on somewhere, I truly enjoy it.
-
If Kanye had left it at that, I would've thought it was awesome. He made a joke about how he was gonna rant about someone beating his beloved Beyoncé again, but was just messing around. It's his comments afterwards that ruin it for me. Raving about artistry and unfairness and basically implying that Beck didn't deserve to win because Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé.
-
And frankly, I thought that Beyonce WOULD win. That album was pretty awesome, and hey, she's Beyonce.
But once you get to the four or five nominees, they are all deserving to win. And Beck won. So good for him.
-
Maybe this is the group of people to answer my question. I keep asking this to various people and have never really gotten a satisfactory answer:
Why is Beyoncé hailed in popular culture as some kind of superhuman being? There just seems to be this running attitude that everything Beyoncé does is perfect and that she is the one role model, who everyone should aspire to be just like. I understand liking or even obsessing over a popular musician, but I don't get the hyperbolic attitude that is, on a cultural scale, directed specifically towards Beyoncé.
-
I guess every music community needs its "Kanye West is literally Hitler" circlejerk thread.
Personally, I would never compare Kanye with Hitler. I think Hitler was a much more talented artist with his paintings than what Kanye is with his music. And at least Hitler had enough sense to never have a child and name them after a compass direction. ;)
Although if Hitler was alive today his ego and narcissism would land him on a reality show. And possibly wed a Kardashian....
-
Agreed, he looked like he really (surprisingly) DID want Kanye to join him.
Beck himself said he loves Kanye West music, which isn't surprising at all.

Yeah, this :lol I wasn't watching the show when it aired. I'm more interested in things that are more fun, like cutting my toenails. But when I saw what he did I have to admit I LOL'd pretty hard. The best part is the look on Beck's face when he thinks Kanye is going to do what he did to Taylor Swift. :rollin

Not sure I see it to the level you apparently do, but she is basically just really awesome at what she does, and does it with a shit-ton of hard work, and balances family life on top of it. She works very hard to have it all, career and family, at the highest level, and she's hot. So, she's the total package.
-
My eyes like her too.
-
Is it wrong that there are more Kanye defenders on Dream Theater Forums than Mike Portnoy defenders?
-
That single lady song is still one of the worst songs to ever exist.
How was Taylor Swift not nominated for Album of the year? A time when she should have actual been nominated and won and she wasn't.
-

While you are not wrong, I wouldn’t get too deep in to the “balances family life…” It’s not like she is a single mom working a double shift at the Burger King to support her kids that their deadbeat dad ran out on.
You can also add that she manages to stay away from controversy and bad PR in an industry where that can be common.
-
I haven't liked any of her songs solo. She has a great voice but most of her songs miss melody and for some reason her her staccato singing turns me off. Kanye on the other hand. Everything about him turns me away from anything he does.
-

I have to imagine that I'm significantly younger than you are (I'm 18), and it's probably a bigger thing with my demographic. I understand admiring her, definitely. There just seem to be some who take that admiration to an irrational, almost cult-like level. Ah well.
How was Taylor Swift not nominated for Album of the year? A time when she should have actual been nominated and won and she wasn't.
Agreed, Taylor Swift's album was really good. I've been spinning it quite a bit lately. I also think my personal album of the year, Coldplay's Ghost Stories, should have been nominated for album of the year, but at least that was nominated for pop vocal album of the year, while 1989 got nothing.
-
I think release date have to do something with Swift not being nominated for anything this year. Her album came out in November?, I believe and the Grammys have a cut off date. If she didn't get nominated for anything this year, she will next year.
-
Yeah, you're right, it actually does seem that she missed the cutoff date, which is September 30th. That makes sense.
-
*looks at how many outside writers Beyonce used on her album*
*thinks of Kayne West talking about Beyonce's art and creativity*
* :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin*
-
I thought that was pretty funny as well. No doubt she has the singing ability (although she has been caught lip syncing) but she is hardly the artist Kanye likes to portray her as.
-
her as.
That's the extent of Kanye's genuine interest.

I think Kanye is obsessed with Beyoncé because let's face it, Kim has to feel like a consolation prize relative to Beyoncé.
-
her ass.
FTFKW
-
Not sure I see it to the level you apparently do, but she is basically just really awesome at what she does, and does it with a shit-ton of hard work, and balances family life on top of it. She works very hard to have it all, career and family, at the highest level, and she's hot. So, she's the total package.
While you are not wrong, I wouldn’t get too deep in to the “balances family life…” It’s not like she is a single mom working a double shift at the Burger King to support her kids that their deadbeat dad ran out on.
Well, yeah, but that's not what I said.

I think Kanye is a dick and his music sucks...
I couldn't even mention a song by Taylor Swift
I only know single ladies by Beyonce... and that was shit
I agree Tenacious D suck dick.
I know a few beck songs and he's pretty good so hats off to him.
That's about all I can contribute to this....

I think Kanye is a dick, but I don't know anything about his music. If I've ever heard anything by him, I never knew it.
I think Taylor Swift is cute, and some of her songs are catchy, but they're not my thing.
I think Beyonce is pretty, but I don't know anything about her music. I've heard the chorus to "Single Ladies", that's about it.
I think Tenacious D started as a parody/joke project, but were surprised when they gained a serious following and are now trying to be a serious act, but aren't actually very good at it. Their talents lie more in their ability to mimic a genre, not actually perform in it at top level.
I know a few Beck songs and he's pretty good so hats off to him.

I always thought Kanye is well respected as a musician. I sure am not fond of his music, but I can say that about nearly everything in that genre. He seems like a jackass in person, but that is not something unique to big celebrities as far as I know. It does make for some entertaining moments, though :lol
Regarding Tenacious D. Cool band (own and love all their releases), solid cover. But a parody band performing a cover winning the genre Grammy for one of my favourite types of music does sting a bit, to be honest. But yeah, popularity contest and all. I hope this at least leads to the D making more material.
-
Does Kanye actually play anything ? Or does he have a team of producers / "writers" to do everything for him ?
-
Good point :lol Probably not. But at least the music that has his name slapped on it seems well respected.
-
His list of outside writers he has used over the years is nearly as long as the list of hot women Scott Baio has bedded.

Ok I have no idea who that is so it's either none or loads.

1989 is really good. Taylor Swift's first three records are really good too, if you can accept the fact that the music is country-ish. I haven't heard her fourth album, Red, yet, but she's a really good songwriter.

Or does he have a team of producers / "writers" to do everything for him ?
Kanye is known for his producing. That's what got him into the game. So that 'team of producers/writers is' him. He's not some talentless asshat (although he is an asshat). Kanye writes all his shit, and producers almost all of it. He revolutionized the rap/hip-hop multiple times, and he's only been in the game around 15 years. I understand that you a lot of folks here don't like Kanye, but don't try to act like he's just another face in pop music who doesn't really do all that much, because he actually does a ton of shit, for him, and for a long list of other artists.
Here's his production discography (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanye_West_production_discography).
-
He does seem to get quite a lot of help (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeezus#Personnel) though.
-
I've honestly never even given Kanye a chance because of his dickery. I doubt I'm the only one. His antics add more negativity for his career than good.
-
I don't need any more dickery in my music collection. That's what I have Yngwie Malmsteen for.
-
He does seem to get quite a lot of help (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeezus#Personnel) though.
That is sure is a lot of names and writers that had contributed to that album. I have no doubt that he is the head guy that overlooks every bit of detail and has the final say and direction in that album, but that's a huge contrast compared to a regular band where's it's like 3-6 guys and their producer to write an album.
Justin Timberlake didn't even need that many guys to make his two albums in 2013. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_20/20_Experience#Track_listings
It's essentially the same guys (JT included) for writing and producing and any instruments in that album are probably from his back-up band.
-
There are a lot of names there, but the input they had on the record was little more than bits and pieces here and there. I'd say it was probably an 85/15 split.
Also, the difference between the 20/20 Expirince and Yeezus is that one is a really good, standard pop record, and the other is a breakthrough in hip-hop that was praised for its fresh, minimalist approach to the genre.
-

Think that's the common thought surrounding Kanye. His music is awesome, his attitude is not.

Should I change the "smh" from the title and just make this a straight Kanye West thread?
It would make some of the thread discussion seem "off" if I did this, but at least Kanye music lovers can have a thread to discuss that?

-

Unless I'm way more out of touch with the pop landscape today than I think I am, I'm pretty sure the 20/20 Experience and its sprawling 8-minute pieces can't really be considered "standard" by any stretch of the imagination.
-
So we had recorded The Grammys and just never got around to watching them until last night. I never watch these things live, because I already know I'm gonna want to skip through a lot of it. Actually, the default is Fast-Forward, and I only hit Play for things that look interesting.
I didn't watch Kanye's regular performance, but later on, I saw Paul McCartney up there, so I hit Play, and it was some kind of Country & Western tribute. And there's Kanye, and Rihanna, and I thought it was one of the more bizarre collaborations I've ever seen. A British rocker, a black guy, and a black girl, singing Country. Here's the kicker: Kanye sounded alright.
So I didn't expect that. The one time I intentionally catch a performance by Kanye (even though I'd watched it for someone else), he's singing C&W, and I'm impressed. Go figure.
-

Yes. Minimalism isn't defined by how many people work on something. Also there was hardly thousands of people who worked on that record.

-
I liken the long cuts on 20/20 experience more to the long disco edits in the 70s, for the purposes of clubs. Not something to be seen as artistically ambitious. Those are great songs though.
-
There are a lot of names there, but the input they had on the record was little more than bits and pieces here and there. I'd say it was probably an 85/15 split.
Okay, so take "I am a God", which is listed on Wikipedia as having 15 distinct writers. (Funny how you were claiming before that Kanye "writes all his shit".) So Kanye wrote 85% of that cut and the other 14 each wrote ~1% on average? What exactly are you basing that 85/15 figure on?
-
Does it really matter how Kanye gets to his end product as opposed to simply whether you like/dislike the end product?
It sounds like LaBrie's recent solo albums have a whole lot to do with Matt Guillory. Many people still like the end product.
-
I don't really care at all, because I don't like his music really, but I kind of would like to get to the bottom of this. I've got a bunch of friends who would swear up and down that Kanye's one of the most talented people in the music business right now, and I never saw that. Meanwhile we've got someone in this thread claiming that Kanye has been successful almost completely independently, with literally no help on the composition side and with very little help on the production side of his records, in spite of the fact that that flies in the face of the album's credits. So I'd like to at least understand what the argument for him is.
-
How does PuffyPat know that info anyway? Was he in the recording studio for that album? Find out next time on Unsolved Mysteries.
-
So I'd like to at least understand what the argument for him is.
Most likely it is simply individual preference. If Kanye lovers swear he is a genius and the stuff you listen to is just subpar (or even lifeless), that's just their take. You have a different and even opposite take. The only thing that changes that is usually time.
The only way to really try to meet them halfway is ask for a couple specific songs they think are Kanye's best work. Ask them if they like every second of the song or if there is a particular section that really caught their ear. Then listen to it.
I did some spot checking on Kanye's songs. I didn't find anything that caught my ear, so I left it at that.
But him crapping all over two fellow artists when they only get a few seconds to have their moment. That's some major douchebaggery that people need to call out and tell him to stop. It isn't even comparable to somebody talking bad about the music of others.
If Petrucci ran up on the stage and said "I can't believe you guys gave the metal Grammy to Tenacious D", I'd think "what a douche." But if somebody posted that the Grammy to Tenacious D felt like a spitting on the lone metal category, that is totally different. But most people into metal don't give a crap about the Grammys, so they won't remember this year's metal Grammy winner by the time March rolls around. I couldn't even tell you which artists DT lost out to.
-

I can. I believe Foo Fighters' White Limo won in the 2012 awards and Black Sabbath's God is Dead won in the 2014 awards. I wonder how different things would be if DT won one in one of those years?
-
I remember DT losing to White Limo, mostly because of the outrage that happened here afterwards. :lol

Pretty entertaining thread.
Reading a bit of it. Yeah, it is pretty split.
I do find that many *metal* fans will say things like "Grammys are irrelevant / stupid / meaningless", then DT gets nominated and suddenly it means something, then they lose and it is meaningless again ... until they are nominated a second time and the cycle starts all over again.
I look at the Grammy winners through out the years, realize it has little to do with my personal music collection and therefore little to do with my life. But I wouldn't crap all over DT for showing respect to the Grammys for their nomination. It is just the right thing to do, (and here we come full circle) unlike Kanye's actions.
-
I think the Grammys can be entertaining. It's a representation of popular music, I'm not sure what more you can expect. I wouldn't consider it an authority on what the best music is, but that goes for any mainstream institution of that sort. Things like the Rock and Roll HoF or The Oscar's. I think it's just important to not take it too seriously or make it out to be anything more than it is.
-

Come on, man.
Also, the problem with DT losing to Foo Fighters is that they shouldn't have been in the same category in the first place, not that the Foos were undeserving.

Did you not get your decoder ring? The translated category is "song with too much guitar."

The important thing to understand is that Hip-Hop writing is a largely collaborative process, and has been since its inception. You could use the example of early hip-hop block parties:
The DJ spins a break for rappers to rhyme over, so DJ & Rapper = 2 writing credits there. Bearing in mind that the DJ is most likely spinning pre-recorded music, and also that he would be using two decks with two different songs playing in order to make the 'new' beat, we could conservatively estimate that the between the two decks there are a total of, oh, say 8 writers, making the total number of writers 10.
Now lets say someone at the block party comes up with a cool hook to put on the track. You gotta give that guy a writing credit. So there's 11. Then lets say some musicians want to start jamming along with their own parts, you could then add another 4-5 credits to the track. 14-15 writers?
That's generally how things would work in the studio too. Looking at the specific Kanye track you pointed out I can see that 4 of the credits are from the samples being used, 5 are from musicians/producers who played on the album. The other credits you could probably put down to dudes being around in the studio while they were recording and maybe contributing a line or two but I dunno they could be totally ghost written lyrics and Kanye's name could just be at the top cos he's the boss who got em all there - it wouldn't be the first time that's happened. If they are ghost written, then that was probably a waste of money because those lyrics are terrible.
I get that a lot of people just hate Kanye for who he is and that's fine, I think he's a fucktard too. But to denounce his music just because of that is ignorant. I don't disregard Appetite for Destruction because Axl's a vindictive little bitch and I don't hate Metallica just because Hetfield enjoys a canned hunt. Music is music, if it speaks to you then cool if it doesn't then don't worry about it. jesus.
-
2 to 3 writing credits is fine but there are so many on single songs it throws me off. Maybe it's the musician snob in me but I can't help it.
-
With so many writers on each track - how is it a Kanye album ?
Because his voice is on it ?
What if he has loads of guest vocalists ?
How is it still a Kanye album ?
-
Because the only reason anyone is in the studio and has anything to work on is because of him? Because he's the creative mind behind the music? Because he's paying the wages? Because his name sells records? Could be any of those I suppose, I really don't know. You could ask the same question of 90% of pop music around today. There's a rumour floating around on Talkbass about the first Maroon 5 album being performed by session musicians contractually obliged to deny any involvement. Everything is about marketability.
-
I've heard that Kings Of Leon don't write any of their songs.
-
Michael Nesmith of The Monkees often didn't even wear his real hat.
-
James LaBrie doesn't even like cheese.

Last night (our time) Kanye gave a guest lecture at the Museum of Natural History at Oxford University.
Some of the pearls of wisdom he graced his audience with :
“My goal, if I was going to do art — fine art — would have been to become Picasso or greater"
“Chris Rock, everyone else at every single media publication called My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy the best album of the last 25 years,”
“Obama calls (my) home phone, by the way,” and
“It’s still February, correct?” ;D
-
:lol
-
A museum let that maniac do a lecture?
-
Universities let all sorts of folks do lectures. Hell, Lil B has done lectures.
-

And we are blown away every time we read about it.
-
“Chris Rock, everyone else at every single media publication called My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy the best album of the last 25 years,”
25 years? Nah, but i'd say MBDTF is the best album since Radiohead - In Rainbows (2007).
-
And I don't really see what's wrong with the first and last statements. I'm not sure about the context of the 3rd so I can't really make much of a judgment.
-
I read that he said " You need to lose your egos like I have "
:rollin

He was talking about the waffles. In addition to being a musical genius, he's also a health guru.

Maybe I'm the only one who expects a guest lecturer at Oxford to know what month he's in.
In the end it's just a bit of fun. As Kotowboy alluded to he also said something about losing his ego . I just find his greatness (and modesty) quite overwhelming ;D

Its a fucking stellar album, but to say its the best album out of all the albums in the world since x year is a stretch for anyone to say, about any album really. Definitely the best Hip-Hop album of 2010. Maybe the best Hip Hop album since Madvilliany (2004)?
-
Personally, yeah. There is Kanye's College Dropout and Donuts too but i prefer Madvillainy over them.
-
Looks like Kanye has some competition - Cristiano Ronaldo sends a hair stylist once a month to fix the hair on his statue at the Madrid Wax Museum :lol These guys.........
-
Vanity, arrogance. Two of the worst traits a person can have in my opinion.
Along with just being inconsiderate towards other people.
I try not to be any of those things. Probably going to the other extremes where I dismiss myself and any achievements I may actually have.
-
Love the studio version of All Day. Oh, and Yeezus is a much better album than MBDTF. Yes, there are like 3-4 stellar tracks on it, but also a couple of really bad ones.
-
Yeah I prefer Yeezus. If not just for New Slaves. Absolutely adore that song. As a whole though I'm not too big on Kanye.
-

Yes! And I don't know why, but the song cracks me up every time I hear it. Around the middle there's a verse (they throwin' hate at me) where you can instantly hear that he used another (worse sounding) microphone just for that part, it's hilarious.
-
I thought Yeezus was a bit disappointing, especially after MBDTF (his masterpiece imo).
Still, thumbs up for not resting on his laurels, as usually.

I could do without Hell of a Life and Gorgeous, but overall Yeezus has far more weaker tracks than MBDTF to my ears.
-
I'm not keen on Yeezus myself, or MBDTF for that matter. Kanye's brilliance lied in The College Dropout and Late Registration for me.
-
In all honesty, I don't get the Kanye is brilliant thing. I'm not saying he isn't good at what he does, just that it doesn't speak to me at all. When he starts singing, I cringe.
I did a spot check on the best album of the past 25 years, and didn't really hear anything that excited me or was all that groundbreaking.
But I don't like to just write things off. I always feel like I gave up right before Track 8 and track 8 was the mindblower.
So any Kanye fans want to offer the forum the top 5 Kanye songs? I can google that, but DTF probably has tastes that are closer to the forum and therefore more likely to make a hit.

If there's one thing you can admire about him it's the fact each of his albums has a different aesthetic.

Definitely, and I think that's a part of the reason he gets the praise he deserves. He manages to re-invent the game (at least in the mainstream sense) with every album.

That's probably one of my favourites off the album too, good choice. My top 5 are probably all on MBDTF haha. I really like Hold My Liquor and Blood on the Leaves off of Yeezus though.

Couldn't even continue reading that article. Anonymous is a bigger douche than Kanye. Hopefully, this will turn people on Anonymous.

There's an article? I just watched the video. It just felt like a good articulation of what everybody thinks about Kanye, which I haven't seen yet.

Pretty much agree with this.

Wow. This forum sure likes to bring up Hitler.
Kayne sure seems to like Hitler.

He’s clearly seriously mentally ill.

Probably, but he's also an attention whore and it looks like he's just being controversial for controversials sake. Basically an internet troll, saying edgy shit to keep himself in the spotlight and rile people up.
-
Frankly, I am sick of people giving him the "he's mentally ill" out.
How many times over the years does he have to show the world that he is an asshole before people start believing him?

For sure. All that money and he doesn't help himself? Then he's fair game.

So because he has the THOUGHT that Hitler has redeeming qualities....which I'm pretty sure our beloved Mr. Rogers would agree with, we're going to label him an anti-semite and ruin his life?
:P
-
No but he does put himself in poor light talking about it. No common sense. Add it to the big list of questionable takes and it's easy to see whey people react poorly to him.

Oh I was mostly kidding. I have no idea what hate or lack thereof he has in his heart, but the dude's an idiot if nothing else. Run into a wall a bunch of times and you're going to get hurt.

Just curious on your thought process here though - he has a mental illness. This is not conjecture. It is a fact. He's been diagnosed and spent time in a psychiatric hospital. He's spoken openly about it. Others who know him well have spoken about it.
I get that he is also an asshole. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive. And he doesn't deserve an "out" for it but he does deserve to get the help he so obviously needs. Frankly, I don't think anyone can fix the asshole part. Severe mental illness and personality disorders can exist in the same person. The first is treatable...the second, sadly, does not have a good prognosis.
The thing about severe mental illness is that many times when the person is in the midst of a decompensation they don't have the ability to have insight into needing help for it and they continue to make choices that often compound the problem. That is why treating people with a major mental illness is often very challenging and not something that lay people have a deep understanding about.

Yup yup. I tend to gloss over when I see something on him. No time to delve into that mess.

I do most of the time as well, but he has had so many WTF moments this year that it's almost like a car crash that you can't look away from, which I am sure is part of his plan, as he is an attention whore of the highest order. Even as he dismantles his own reputation, I am sure he is loving the attention he is getting.

Hardy har har. But I would ask; does having a belief that you don't like make someone an asshole? That's where I was going when I asked you how you defined that word. Because that's not how it should work, no matter how abhorrent the belief (since that's subjective).

Is it like if I were to say All the people spreading the word of Jesus Christ/God are assholes for what they did to my ancestors?
But, I feel that what Kanye was trying to convey is that sure Nazis were bad. But not all of them were, just like how not all of the colonists who came to America were bad people. These people just went along with it, because of various reasons. Just like how we have people going along with current political issues because of various reasons, one could be that no one wants to be on the bad side of history. But yet, we won't know until history conveys this. Which is how we currently view Nazis today as being bad people.
Also Hitler never was always a bad person. There are various things that happened in his life, the consequences ended up making him the bad person he became to be. He was an amazing artist and by being rejected by these institutions, his life path took a turn and this led him to Vienna were his fascination with Karl Lueger took hold and transformed him into the man we know today.

This is from Serj Tankian about his song Occupied Tears...
“It’s time to end this misery, known as the Israeli Occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. Occupied Tears, from my solo record Harakiri, was written about this and the hypocrisy of a people who have gone through the horrible atrocities of the Holocaust now serving as occupiers of another people. John Kerry and the US had been placing a lot of pressure to restart the peace negotiations. Hamas and the Palestinian Authority united to negotiate as one. Netenyahu tried to separate them but couldn’t. Eventually the kidnappings served as a political excuse to recapture released Palestinian political prisoners by Israel. Hamas fired rockets in response and Israel got off the hook on having to make permanent peace by invading Gaza and changing the conversation from permanent peace to temporary truce.
One more thing: calls for anti-semitism should never be used to cloak honest discussion of these issues especially here in the US.
Let me know what you think as well.
Peace
Serj”

I don't follow Kanye to know if he has a mental illness or not, but if Alex Jones looks like the normal person in the conversation, you are doing things wrong :lol Seriously though, no one should be giving him a platform. Asshole, mental health, whatever his issue is, he doesn't deserve to be put in the spotlight not only for his bad takes, but for his own sanity I would think too. But yeah, ratings and clicks I guess.

No, West's many actions over the years collectively make him an asshole. His comments yesterday, which in a vacuum would him make him more of a disgusting anti-semite than an asshole, just kind of rubber stamped it. I have ZERO love for the KarTrashian family, but revealing the stuff he has from the personal life he had with his ex-wife is just revolting stuff. That are the actions of an asshole.

I'm more like... :corn :corn "Wow, he actually went there" and just amazed at how he is just spewing whatever he is thinking about.
I am also amazed at how people seem so fascinated on wanting that celebrity of the moment though. People thought Trump was bad, then here comes Kanye, part of the three amigos, waltzing in on his dinner party. Then Ye goes on to chicken dance on Alex Jones' table, making Alex look like the chicken with his head on straight.
Although, it is quite hard to feel no way about this at all. Whether it be anger, frustration, sadness, worry, or whatever.
