Axl Rose
Eddie Van Halen
Geoff Tate
Ted Nugent
That's a start.
-
Yngwie should get thrown around. But the Tater just takes it to a whole new level. I can't think of a more miserable human being.
-
Yeah, definitely Yngwie. Glaring omission on my part.
Also, Phil Anselmo is probably up there.
And Lars. :lol
-
I'm tempted to say Fred Durst, but calling him a rock star is a bit of a stretch.
-
Gene Simmons
Chad Kroeger
Dave Mustaine
Kerry King
-
Speaking of Yngwie, I've heard his idol Richie Blackmore is not the most pleasant person either.
-
From what I read, Sebastian Bach can be a real piece of work
-
Dennis DeYoung
Steve Perry
Geoffrey Tate
My personal hate from the way ge acted live- Leslie West
-
And as much as I think may very well be the most amazing vocalist ever (certainly one of the most versatile) Mike Patton strikes me as someone I wouldn't want to spend more than 5 minutes with....and I think I'd be waiting for it to be over for the last 4 1/2.
-
Scott Stapp
-
Gene Simmons
Chad Kroeger
Dave Mustaine
Kerry King
What’s wrong with Chad Kroeger? I’ve never heard any stories about him.
-
The vast majority of the above I agree with.
Two I would give the benefit of the doubt to these days:
1) Steve Perry - seems to have mellowed significantly in recent times and is a great guy to be around these days from what I hear.
2) EVH has disappointed me more than most.......an idol of mine as a kid who just kept disappointing. Some may not wish to make a distinction between people who are just plain assholes and those who are ugly drunks/druggies (and fair enough) but , as I understand it , when Ed's clean - as in recent years - he's a really nice guy and does a load of good charity work under the radar. And despite all that has happened his family (and ex-wife) still rave about him - even Hagar admits he's sweet when he's clean. Guys like Tate, Axl and Yngwie are just natural born pricks ;D
John Sykes is a difficult mofo from all reports.
-
Axl Rose and Gene Simmons were the first to spring to mind for me.
-
Axl Rose and Gene Simmons were the first to spring to mind for me.
This, plus Geoff Tate.
I might get some shit for this, but I think Josh Homme is pretty questionable.
-
Bono
possibly Billy Corgan
Marilyn Manson
John Lydon
Billy Joe Armstrong
-

Josh Homme kinda occupies a realm where he's both cool and a complete asshole, heh. Conflicting feelings for sure.
Also maybe it's just me, but I always thought Mark E. Smith of The Fall was an annoying twat. Love his music though.
-
Yeah, definitely Yngwie. Glaring omission on my part.

And Lars. :lol
Phil is so god damned cool these days, he's made up for whatever past douchery he's done.
-
Joey De Maio from Manowar
The Adolph Hitler of metal. Not really a rockstar perhaps but he sure thinks he is the most famous rockstar in the world. ;D

Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
Nah. I listen to a few bands fronted by some admittedly reprehensible folks. Artist and music are separate for me.
-
I can only talk about those that I've semi-met in real life. Judging by videos, articles, interviews and from the audience seems unfair.
Yngwie Malmsteen: was actually pretty cool most times I saw him. But one show the roadie tossed him his guitar and it hit him in the face. He had a bit of blood in his mouth and he spent the rest of the show spitting it on his roadie. His wife at the time was a real piece of work.
Kevin Moore: he wasn't bad or anything. And this was obviously around the time he was probably unhappy being in DT. But each and every band member happily signed the WDADU and I&W sleeves. I had a silver marker that showed up dark on light backgrounds and light on dark backgrounds. He seemed a bit rude about the pen. "You want me to sign a white background (WDADU) with a silver pen? Didn't think this one through?" (or something like that). Me: "It will show up on .." Kevin "I'll just sign with my black pen." I just said "That's fine. Thanks so much." Hardly a rock star moment, but you can tell he wanted to be anywhere but signing something. This was the exact same day Portnoy talked for at least 30 minutes to me and my friend, so it really stood out in contrast.
Zakk Wylde: The guy was actually pretty nice, but they aren't lying when they say he is always plastered and stinky. He was at a Vinnie Moore concert in the audience right next to me cheering Vinnie on (and later got up on stage with Vinnie). It was kind of funny because they switched guitars. Zakk's guitar basically touched Vinnie's feet and Vinnie's guitar looked like a lobster bib on Zakk.
CC Deville: I hear he is nice, but he so wanted to be a guitar hero. He was at the Leo Fender Memorial in Irvine, CA and he seemed really upset that he wasn't loved as the real guitar heroes. Normally, he probably was the most approached (fame), but that night people were more or less ignoring him. I kind of remember him whining at the audience when it was his turn on stage.
Most everybody else I've met has been anywhere from normal to ridiculously cool.
Does Kanye count as a rock star? He's pretty awful.
Is there a "really cool rock stars"? I have way more examples of that.
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
Yes. I stopped listening to Disturbed because of that prick David Draiman. It's funny though because Geoff Tate is even worse, but I still love Queensryche.
-
I personally haven't because if I did, probably 30% of my music collection would be out the window lol
-
I'm tempted to say Fred Durst, but calling him a rock star is a bit of a stretch.
And Liam Gallagher - it's always the people with the least actual ability that have the most ego.
Liam Gallagher has never been a great singer - and he's only gotten worse over the years. He was the reason Oasis split up. His 2nd band broke up because they weren't doing very well - and he still acts like a massively egotistical rockstar.
Recently he's just been lashing out at Noel on twitter because High Flying Birds are so successful. Saying " he was planning his solo album whilst oasis were still together "
and " songs on the first HFB album were written when he was still in oasis "
As if either of those things are somehow abnormal ?
I want Liam to write and record his own solo album and see how well that does before he starts dishing out abuse to other, more talented people out of jealousy.
Noel, on the other hand - whilst he has said some poor things in the past ( some of which he apologised for ) - his arrogance is mostly tongue-in-cheek and in one-on-one
interviews is pretty down to earth and humble. He has also notably matured over the years, he's 47 now and seems pretty laid back whilst Liam is in his 40's too and still acts
like a 21 year old. Noel is also hilarious. But get him on a TV show with a big audience and the pretend arrogance comes out.
He's said in the past that you never know how long your career in music will last so he's just having fun with it.
-
Billy Joe Armstrong
What's Billie done ? Apart from that drunken outburst at the i Heart Radio thing - I don't really recall any big scandals involving him or Green Day.
I'd never put him in the "douchebag rockstar" category.
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
Dropped Ted Nugent like a rock when he went batshit insane, and he used to be one of my favorite guitarists. And this is an occupational hazard listening to a lot of more underground black metal, where the members espousing Nazi beliefs is practically habitual.
-
GG Allin.
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
Nah, I like early Yngwie music a lot (Rising Force made my Top 20), so I don't really care about those things when it comes to music itself.
And Blackmore is one of my favourite musicians ever, though I wouldn't say he's that big of a dick, especially now. Certainly not on Tate or Yngwie levels.
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
Nah. Like I've said before, the DEP is my favorite band, even though I think Greg's mostly an asshole.
-
Gene Simmons
Chad Kroeger
Dave Mustaine
Kerry King
What’s wrong with Chad Kroeger? I’ve never heard any stories about him.
He kind of embraces the hatred that Nickelback gets a little too much. The was also an incident with Derek Whibley from Sum 41. Derek used to be married to Avril Lavinge (who is now married to Chad). He went to a Halloween party with his friend and he dressed up as Avril while his friend dressed up as Chad as a joke. Chad responded on Twitter by saying something along the lines of "I was gonna go to a party dressed as Derek Whibley, but the costume theme was celebrities". It was an unnecessary response to a lighthearted joke. He also compared Nickelback's music to Mozart and Bach recently which is ridiculous.
-
I find nothing wrong with that. That's personal. it's obvious that there's a grudge and it's about a woman. That's not the same as being a jackass in life.
-

This. I can't tell that he is an asshole the same way that many of these legends of douchebaggery are.
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
I do, probably. If the main members are asses, then it's pretty hard for me to really relate to the music in ways that I want.

legends of douchebaggery
This should be the name of a Malmsteen/Van Halen tribute act.

This thread is awesome to read through :tup
-
All I'm gonna say is that somehow, this thread made it to the second page without the mention of Ian Watkins, a convicted paedophile.
-
I like how the douchebag thread is at two and counting, where the nice guy thread is still lingering at half a page. :lol

I didn't mention him because I don't know who the fuck he is.

Also, Steve Whiteman of Kix.

Also, Steve Whiteman of Kix.
I *LOVE* that guy! I think he's absolutely one of the best frontmen from the entire hair metal genre!! (though, I have never met him personally)
EDIT: His rant at the end of Yeah Yeah Yeah is absolutely ICONIC. It's been sounding a bit "rehearsed" lately...but the version from Kix Live is one of the coolest things I've ever heard in my life.
-
Oh absolutely, he's a fantastic frontman, without question and still is. They headline Friday night at the M3 festival every year. I've done openers for his other band, Funny Money. He's a bit of a douche. I could be wrong though, maybe it was just the one time or two that I saw him, but I'm fairly confident that it wasn't just me. :lol A couple years ago, WASP headlined M3 on Friday night. Basically if they couldn't headline, they weren't gonna play. SW couldn't help himself but to make smart remarks about it on stage about how they always headline and weren't that year.
Then WASP came on and made everyone forget whoever had just been on stage.

lol

Keep it that way. The more stuff that comes out about him - the worse it gets.
Let's just say that when I first read what he'd done - I assumed it was a spelling mistake. My brain just automatically went " no that can't be right ".

I am SO relieved that I was NEVER a LostProphets fan.
I think I liked a grand total of one of their songs.
Unfortunately - I know someone who was in one of their music videos.. :P

You could say he lost all future profits due to being a sicko.
zing?
-
Hehe. That joke was going around when it all went down.
I think Ian Watkins might even be worse than Jonathan King for most vile person on Earth.
And Jonathan King is pretty bad.
If it's true that the devil takes human form and walks the earth then I can believe it when I see people like those two.
-
Zakk Wylde always comes across as a real "look at how much I can drink, how tough I am" style wanker. :) I love his first few Ozzy albums though esp. No More Tears.
-
Dave Mustaine is legitimately a bad person.

Early 2000's, my Kiss tribute Cold Gin did a show with BLS. Zakk was an extremely nice guy and cool to hang with. His ability to drink is nearly legendary. :lol

That's interesting - I've heard plenty of bad things second hand. Depends how far he pushes the drinking perhaps :lol

I liked a handful of their songs, mostly from Start Something. I have a good friend who invited me to her place in about 2010 or 11 and we got rotten drunk and played each other's favourite bands to each other. She gushed over Lostprophets. She was quite heartbroken when the dude pleaded guilty.
In an effort to keep this thread super light, a few more names that come to mind, but no-one else has mentioned:
Euronymous and Vikernes of Mayhem. Euronymous drove his friend and bandmate, Dead, to suicide, then, upon discovering the body, bought a throwaway camera, took photos of the body before calling the police, and used the picture as the cover of the band's first album. Vikernes then went on to stab Euronymous to death. Both men were also involved in burning down churches throughout Norway.
Charlie Manson has released music while in prison. I listened to some of the tracks from his first album on youtube out of curiosity, and I thought they were surprisingly good.
-
Dave Mustaine is legitimately a bad person.
Dave Mustaine is crazy. He's a crazy person. He's not a bad person, though, in my opinion. He means well—he even has a lot of goodwill for Het and Lars these days. He's just crazy, which leads to stuff like the whole "all these shootings are part of a government conspiracy" thing.
I don't blame anyone if they don't like him because of that, but it doesn't make him a bad person. He means the best for everyone (everyone except the New World Order, I suppose?), and he's not seriously hurting anyone by accident. So, to me, that adds up to "mostly harmless, well-meaning crazy," not "bad person."
-
Just realized no on has yet mentioned Vince Neil.
-
That's a fair point. Motley Crue can be pretty disdainable, at times, except for Mick Mars he's the good one, and you include the fact that Neil inadvertently killed someone while he was drunk driving, along with any other legal troubles that there is, there's a section of legal troubles in his wiki, he's pretty much hateable. If only there was actually a legit fight between Axl Rose and Vince Neil. At least, we would have gotten to see/hear the pleasure of one of them get beaten up.
Speaking of legal troubles, Wes Scantlin of Puddle of Mudd seems have a negative reputation. It's funny, here's the list of the latest articles that Ultimate-Guitar has on him and Puddle of Mudd in general.

This was already mentioned in a different thread, but I don't know what you're talking about. Did Mustaine really comment on SC?

No, he's just taking a swipe at XBOBX.

Who was that guy from Stratovarius that kept making up a bunch of drama to get attention?
Timmo Tolkki
He is really mentally unstable. Their keyboarplayer Jens Johansson is pretty wierd too. He took a leak (check out the pics if you don´t believe me) on Tolkki on stage in the middle of the concert.
Jens auditioned for DT when Kevin Moore left. I am not surprised if his antics where the main reason they picked Sherinian instead. :lol

Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
If I did that Most of Judas Priest would be gone thanks to Dave Holland.
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
Not quite, but it has prevented me from getting into bands that I would like musically - I just don't give them a chance. Burzum being the chief example.
-
Ted Nugent.
-
Does Kanye count as a rock star? He's pretty awful.
He's a pretty mixed bag it seems. He tends to embarrass himself on the media front, but when it comes to fan encounters I've heard basically nothing but positive things. People usually saying he was super nice to them and seemed genuinely interested in speaking with them.
-
Kanye feels a real affinity with fans who love him - they have so much common ground to talk about :)
-
Has anyone ever stopped listening to a favorite band of theirs strictly because it came to light how much of a jerk one of the members are?
As well as oversaturation, Axl certainly put me off G'n'R.
I coped with Yngwie being a prick for many years but when the music went downhill too I bailed. And reading the As Above So Below biog he is a total arse of the highest magnitude.
As a huge KISS fan I don't mind Gene $immons at all.
I remember seeing Deep Purple when JLT was singing. I was on the front row and all I could hear was Blackmore's guitar. I remember Lord speaking to Glover who approached Ritchie obviously telling him to turn his guitar down. He just turned it up louder. I don;t think they lasted very long after that.
-
I guess I will call out the usual offenders:
Dave Mustaine
Ted Nugent
Lars Ulrich
Geoff Tate
Axl Rose
All of Motley except for Mick Mars
A name I haven't seen in here yet that I really feel deserves mention is Andrew Eldritch of the Sisters of Mercy. Anyone who knows anything about the history of SoM knows he was (and most likely still is) a real asshole.
I'm somewhat on the fence about Blackie Lawless of WASP. He definitely doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut, and he's not too far behind Mustaine in the tinfoil hat conspiracy territory, but I don't thinks he's quite on the level of most mentioned in this thread.
Yngwie's pretty bad, but I don't think he's quite as dis-likable as most mentioned here. Plus I've had way too many laughs at his expense thanks to adam02. :D
I actually don't think Gene Simmons is anywhere near as bad as most make him out to be. Yeah, his whole Heavy Metal Gordon Gekko image has become rather grating, but he's quite gracious and amenable to KISS fans. And I can't really say I hold anything against him (or Paul for that matter), for ousting Peter and Ace (Ace is a bit of an egomaniac himself and while Peter can be nice, he's also a bit...... nuts)
