Yes.

Just an expectation-lowering note as I contemplate early impressions to post in a couple days.  I may have to take back what I said earlier about maybe people starting to get a better sense of my taste.  :p  This is the weakest round yet, with nothing initially above an 8.0 and several below 7.0.  I feel like I've said this every round, but I think it might be mathematically provable, but of course that compresses the middle even more than before.  It could probably take a bit longer to sort everything out and to get a grasp on a few of these than the last multi-song round, definitely some challenging submissions this time for a variety of reasons, and nothing I outright love yet.  I'll be glad if some of them have grown on me though, but if not, you've been warned.

see i personally find it boring to send basically the same thing twice or try to chip away at what exactly peoples' specific tastes are because giving you exactly what you want is boring for both of us

sending stuff that you may or may not like but haven't specifically said you dislike? now that's the stuff

imo, there's a difference between 'sending what a host wants' and 'sending what a host might like'.  Most roulette hosts just want music they'll enjoy.  I tend to stay away from roulette's where I have no idea what the hosts tastes are; it can be a frustrating experience for both to continually send/receive music that is unappealing - as you may recall from participating (and rage-quitting) during one of my roulettes.  :)

Oh boy. So the trick is to not suck too much more than everyone else.

Yeah, well, I got overly optimistic when you talked about how much everything sucked in your second round, and then it seems like a bunch of it grew on you.  Either you thought mine sucked too at first, or a bunch of stuff surpassed it on later listens.  :p

Well, a number of people in the roulette have yet to figure out exactly what I want anyway.  :p  I guess I'm looking for some of both - music that is right up my alley that I either don't know about or haven't paid enough attention to, and also to stretch my tastes a bit.  Of course, people who try to stretch them significantly are taking the bigger risk in terms of their scores, as long as they don't care too much about that.  More on that in some of the writeups...

Yeah, though unless you know someone really well, it's probably too subtle a distinction to even bother figuring out.  Especially if someone is more spread out in their preferences.  I imagine I'm gonna experience the other side of this in ariich's roulette.  It's already fascinating in this one, where I seem to have the whole spread, people who are almost always sending stuff I like, people who are mostly sending music I'm not as into, people who seem perpetually locked in the middle, and people who yo-yo from top to bottom round to round.

I don't think you're necessarily guilty of this but to go back to what you said a round or two ago about it sometimes being easier to focus on what you don't like about songs in your write-ups over what you do like, I think that can make it harder for people to grow an understanding of your tastes. There's been some roulettes where after a few rounds I still have no idea what the host likes, I just have a growing list of things they don't like, which really doesn't make picking things for them any easier. :lol

Anyways I sent two songs from the best album of 2018 so if you don't like it that's on you. :loser:

Eh, it's a scaling issue.  In the songs scoring above 8.0 I'm almost exclusively talking about things I like.  It's the songs hovering around 7.0 where I find myself arguably overly focusing on the negative facets to explain why they're towards the bottom of the rankings, even if on net my feeling towards them is still positive, it just might not seem that way from the writeup.

I'm also trying to emphasize what I don't like so I get less of it in future rounds.  Of course, I'm sure numerous people aren't reading any writeups other than their own (which is perfectly fine, it's a fair amount of reading (though not really any more than Crow's, from the skimming I've done), you just shouldn't be complaining too much if you're not scoring as high as you'd like :) )  Theoretically average scores should go up over time if people heed my advice, though the scores will likely be lower this round unless there's a tidal shift, which is a bit frustrating, but maybe it'll be an anomaly.  I have some minor statistical comparisons I may or may not do in a few rounds.

I've never really had a roulette where the average quality of submissions has a clear upwards trajectory over time... if anything it's usually the opposite; a lot of people send all their best stuff early and then run out as the rounds go on. :P

Tastes are so esoteric that even with incredibly good write-ups, it's hard to communicate them effectively. And even if you do, people on here have a wide variety of their own tastes, so certain participants will have a natural advantage (whether they're aware of it or not), based on what music they like listening to and how well it aligns with the host. Unless you're like, Ariich, who literally listens to everything ever made, ever.

People are also not always consistent in what they like and don't like. Two bands/songs may have a lot of similarities, but for whatever reason there's one I'll like and one I won't. It doesn't always make sense and it's hard to explain sometimes. So even if we think we know what you're tastes are, there's almost no way to know for sure if something will hit you the same way as something else we know you'll like. The only way to really know is to send it and find out how you like it!
