Can I just join if I tell you that I turn 44 in about 4 weeks or do I have to pass a special fogey test?

Well, you're German, so I'm not sure we can give you any Western 70s/80s pop culture questions.

Well, apart from East Germany (formerly known as German Democratic Republic or simply Lost Behind The Wall) we had a little bit of culture ourselves  ;D

Yeah  :metal Nena's album with 99 Luftballons was one of the first tapes  I owned at the age of 13 or 14.

And sure do I know Falco and I although think that the After the Fire version is inferior. And strictly speaking: Falco was from Austria  ;)

I'll give the After the Fire version some credit for breaking the song into the U.S.  I remember the video getting play on MTV, shortly followed by Falco's version which by comparison seemed kinda dry.  But it was the original and actually came first, and the more I listened to Falco's version, the more I appreciated the sparseness of it, which allowed for more subtlety.  Also, the way he slips from German into English and back again effortlessly is pretty cool.

I don't even know about this After the Fire version or whatever der Kommissar is, but the simple fact that he owned things on tapes seems to establish his credentials.

This is Falco - Der Kommissar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlW_lDpzyLw

I think MC Hammer also has known this song.

I never was a real fan of Falco's music but he had a certain charme. His rhythmic singing, almost rapping and his mixture of german, austrian dialect (especially vienna) and english and his more or less nonsens lyrics set him apart at the time.

Agreed.  And Rock me Amadeus, ftw!!   :metal :metal

Speaking of tapes, what was everyone's preferred brand for making mixed tapes.  Personally, I was a Maxell XL-II kinda guy.  Only tossed out my 'briefcase' of tapes a few years ago.  Made sure I had everything digitally of course.

Dude!  :tup  Those tapes were the best!  The TDKs were a good second choice, but I always went with Maxells when I could find them.

I still have all mine.  Drawers and drawers of them.  I'm a media pack rat.

Either of these suckers, full (with DYMO labels on the handles so I know what's what).

Maxell or TDK for me. I spent hours and hours putting together mix tapes, I even designed covers.
Somehow I miss that. Putting together a playlist or burning a cd isn't the same.
My tapes went the way of all things past some ten years ago when my tape deck broke
and I decieded not to buy another one.

My dad paid $900.00 in the 80's for the first on screen programmable VCR.  You can buy excellent Blu Ray players for $200!

I know I used a lot of the SA-90s, and whatever the equivalent metal version Sony made. I remember having to switch because as the tape got longer it also got thinner and had a tendency to break. I recall that they started making 110s, which were great for copying albums onto (I was never a mix tape kinda guy), but those would definitely break on you.

I also threw out my briefcase a while back. I recall that I found a bag full of roaches in it since that case was also my traveling stashbox. I learned that cops would dump out all of your tapes to be dicks, but they wouldn't go box by box looking for stash, nor would they actually search the case itself.

I remember when they tried making those 100s or 110s... they always snapped.

You know, I heard about that a lot, but I never had that problem with higher-capacity tapes.  Before the 100's and 110's, there were 120's (the next logical step up from 60's and 90's) and I had some of those.  My problem was that the thinner tape was more prone to jamming the tape deck in my car.  But I never had breakage issues.  Auto-stop and auto-reverse in both my home and car decks for the win.

Didn't we all?   There are still songs to this day I expect not to hear the last few seconds of, because in trying to time that 47-ish minutes of songs perfectly, I invariably went a bit too long.

To this day, there are certain songs where, when it gets to the end of the song, there's another song I expect to hear next because they were back-to-back on a mix tape years ago.

I lived to make mixed tapes! Especially making them for a girlfriend!

Nothing says "I Love You" like a mix tape.  CD-Rs and playlists are fun but just not the same.  To make a mix tape, you had to actually sit there and make the tape in real time, which meant at least a few hours for a 90-minute tape.  The planning, the editing, and of course the artwork for the cover.

I made mix tapes for a lot of my friends (only some of whom I loved) and just gave them away.  I considered myself a cultural ambassador for good music.

I can relate to that (and the whole discussion) - in honour of the great Sir Les Patterson I'll call myself the Australian Cultural Attache of Rock and Metal .  Note the package.

And here's a few old tapes I still have
