All that talk about Pink Floyd in the Pink Floyd survivor gave me this idea - I've been wanting to write something in a while and since there are quite a few PF fans abound, there'll probably be some following here as well. I don't know if someone wants to take over after I'm done or not - if you do, let me know.
Up next:
- ReaperKK
- Unlegit
- wasteland
- Lolzeez
And without further ado, we begin, three at a time. Feel free to comment, make snide remarks or whatever tickles your fancy upon reading these.
20. Us and Them - The Dark Side of the Moon
Recently voted as the best song on DSOTM throught DTF consensus, I can imagine that many would place this higher, but I'm not one of these people (obviously). Yes, it's a great song and I really enjoy it, especially the main guitar/piano melodies, and the sax on the Pulse version is pretty swell as well, but Pink Floyd has quite some (19) better songs, so it only just makes the list.
19. One Of These Days - Meddle
Another great song from a great and underrated album - sure, most people agree that Echoes is off-the-charts amazing, but the other songs go unappreciated in context, which is a shame. The main groove of this song is pretty awesome and Gilmour's guitar work is great throughout. Not much else to say to this one, I guess. It's a great start to one of PF's best records and my favourite PF instrumental.
18. Keep Talking - The Division Bell
I probably rank The Division Bell higher than most people, and this song is one of the reasons for that. The main riff (or what you want to call it) is simple but very catchy and the samples are used to maximum effect. Gilmour's soloing in this song is top-notch as well - even though he isn't the most technical guy out there, his sense of melody is unparalleled. The song could have done without the background vocals towards the end, though, but it's still a great song and one that I rarely see getting the love that it, in my opinion, deserves.
-
Huge PF fan, probably my favorite band of all time. I wanna do a Top 20 after you!
As for the list:
One of these days is a great track, probably would make my Top 20, I probably listen to it more than Echoes.
Keep Talking is a great song, PULSE version is even better.
-
Meddle and The Division Bell are my #3 and #4 Pink Floyd albums respectively, so it's great to see songs from those records here.
I will be following this one.
-
What's the top 2?
-
Animals and Dark Side of the Moon (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=31767.0)
-
I love The Division Bell (I may like it more than The Wall) but Keep Talking isn't one of my favorites. Its a good song but there are others that I think are better like Coming Back To Life, High Hopes Wearing The Inside Out, and A Great Day For Freedom. Hopefully one of those 4 will be on your list.
-
Animals and Dark Side of the Moon (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=31767.0)
I don't think I'll ever understand the allure of Animals. Don't get me wrong it's a great album however it's definitely the weakest of the 70's releases (With maybe Obscured By Clouds being exception). Dogs is the best track and pretty much the only track that is memorable.
-
Nice idea. I'll be listening to the songs as you post them. I've never been on fire for Pink Floyd (more of a Roger Waters fanboy), so maybe this will help.
-
Just listened. I have heard but am mostly unfamiliar with PF's albums that are not part of the "Big Four". One Of These Days was spectacular. Keep Talking was interesting, too. Wright's synth lines especially shone out. He turns that normally cheesy 80's keyboard patch into something magical.
-
Cool! Could I do a top 20 after ReaperKK?
All great tracks on this update.
-
Following!

Sign me up after reaperKK and unlegit, Tom :tup

17. Fearless - Meddle
Another great song off of Meddle. This is a very soothing song with some great acoustic guitars and a very simple structure, but offers some very good and thought-provoking lyrics all the same. It kinda feels like a storm waiting to break loose, but it never does, and that's kinda the appeal, if that makes any sense. I'm not the biggest fan of the outro, though, I never really got what that was supposed to accomplish, but yeah.
16. Fat Old Sun - Atom Heart Mother
Another very soothing tune with some gorgeous guitar work. The lyrics are great again and they show that while Waters was probably Pink Floyd's best lyricist, Gilmour was no slouch either. They seem to be about an impending death and how you deal with it, or at least's that my interpretation. The guitar solo in the second half of the song is one of my favourite Gilmour solos, it just fits the song and its mood in a way that few others do.
15. Coming Back to Life - The Division Bell
Another one off of The Division Bell? Yes, now shut up, because this song is great. Some more great lyrics by Gilmour, this time dealing with regret, I think, a very relatable topic, but still written in a very poetic manner. The vocal melodies are what make this song, though, they're absolutely gorgeous. The Pulse version is even better than the studio version, Gilmour's delivery of the vocals there never fails to send chills down my spine, especially during the intro part, where it's only him and the keys.
-
Fearless :heart
Love that song. Oh and btw, following
Better have High Hopes and Pigs (TDO) somewhere on your list. Oh and Us And Them needs to be higher.
-
Great pick with Fat old sun. :tup
-
20. Us and Them - The Dark Side of the Moon
Recently voted as the best song on DSOTM throught DTF consensus
I just wanted to point out that winning a survivor and being voted "the best" is not the same thing.
In a survivor, each round eliminates what is, by majority vote, the "weakest" or "worst". The problem is that really great songs, or songs which you or I or any other given individual might think are great, often polarize people. What makes it great to us is exactly what bugs the shit out of other people. That's why we so often see songs voted off early and people saying "WTF?! That's the best song on the album!" You get enough people who feel that way and happen to be online for the voting that day, and a song which is also the favorite of many can easily be eliminated.
As things proceed, I often find myself looking at the choices and my faves are already gone, and all I'm doing is voting from what's left. Picking off the weakest one at a time is definitely not the same as picking the strongest overall. If we were doing that, there would be exactly one round of voting per album. Pick your favorite, the highest number of votes wins, move to next album. If we did that, I'd bet that the results would be different, every time.
Having a "survivor" -- when you think about it -- is a bizarre and completely assbackwards way of determining the best.
-
Great three picks!
Fearless - Great tune, something that always sticks in my head.
Fat Old Sun - I never really got into this tune until I saw the live version on "Remember That Night" dvd.
Coming Back To Life - like the album version, love the PULSE version.
-
I'd consider doing this, but I'm one of those "Dark Side and after" fans, so my list probably wouldn't be very interesting.
-
I wanna do one of these. Sign me up bro.
-
Sure thing!
14. Wish You Were Here - Wish You Were Here
What a great song. So simple and yet so heartfelt, with some tasty playing from all instrumentalists, especially Wright's keys give the whole thing a lot of depth. Some great lyrics that everyone can relate to, delivered with the usual sense of poetry; I'm not the biggest fan of Roger Waters as a person, but he really was one of the best lyricists in music. The outro drags on a tad too long, but apart from that, this song is perfect.
13. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun - A Saucerful of Secrets
One of Pink Floyd's earliest masterpieces, this song showed the astounding potential that the group had. Built around a very simplistic but spacey and haunting keyboard and bass motif with barely audible lyrics in the background, this song is what I would show someone who asked me what psychedelic music is. Funnily enough, I used to hate this song, but when I relistened for the survivor, I suddenly found new appreciation for it and now it's one of my favourites.
12. Time - The Dark Side of the Moon
Beautiful intro on this one, perfect layering of keys, guitars and percussion, and the rest of the song doesn't disappoint either. Some very good lyrics again, with an astounding delivery, the "Home - home again" part is probably my favourite. The only part of this song that I don't like all that much is the transition from the intro into the sung passages. Sure, they're both great but the transition is a little jarring. Other than that, this song is a flawless masterpiece.
-
Both updates have some great tracks! The first is a little more original while this one is more of the classics, not that that's a bad thing.
-
Great update however Set The Controls isn't a top 20 song for me, it's ok.
-
Great batch! :tup
Maybe WYWH and Time would find a spot in my top 10 spot, though ;)
-
Time is possibly my favourite PF song :tup
-
Nice to see Coming Back To Life. As overplayed as it is, Time is my favorite PF song.
-
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun is a great song. Time is a masterpiece and Wish You Were Here while not in my top 20,is still a great song.
-
Thanks for all the interest!
11. Dogs - Animals
Since I listed Animals as my second favourite PF album, you were probably all wondering when a song from that would show up here. Well, here it is. As I probably don't have to tell anyone, Dogs is pretty much 17 minutes of awesomeness. Great, great lyrics and some of Gilmour's best guitar work in Pink Floyd. Really, all of this song is awesome, but I'm especially partial to the "Who was..." part, that's the climax of the song for me and one of Pink Floyd's best moments for sure.
10. A Great Day for Freedom - The Division Bell
Placing this over Dogs will probably cause some of you to doubt my sanity, but I simply enjoy it more. Yes, Dogs is a masterpiece in ways that this one can never achieve, but I have to be in the right mood for it, otherwise I'll probably skip it if it comes up on shuffle - not so with A Great Day for Freedom. With lyrics about the fall of the Berlin Wall, it hits very close to home, because even though I wasn't even born, it was probably an event that shaped my life a lot, if that makes any sense and I hear a lot about the event from my family, so it was always an interesting topic for me. Musically, it echoes the lyrics perfectly, with both hope and disappointment resonating somewhere in there. The vocal melodies are nothing short of gorgeous as well.
09. Hey You - The Wall
Probably everyone on this forum knows that I think that The Wall, as an album, is overrated, but that doesn't stop individual songs from that album being awesome, and Hey You is definitely one of them. Interestingly, I actually heard the DT cover of this song before the original and that inspired me to check out The Wall, and while it left me a little underwhelmed, I still conceded that Pink Floyd's version of Hey You is far superior to the DT one. Water's vocals just fit the tune a lot better, especially in terms of emotional delivery and Gilmour's guitar solo after the "I'm coming home" part is nothing short of amazing. If all of The Wall were like this, no other Pink Floyd album could match up, but sadly, it isn't.
-
I've not listened to dogs in years, maybe I should make up for my madness, now. And I agree with the other two songs, they are just great. Also, I think I like the DT cover more than the original Hey You. But again, I'm not a fan of Water's voice.
-
Never really liked A Great Day for Freedom. The other two, however, are classics. :hefdaddy
-
Not a fan of dogs or a great day for freedom :/
-
Cool I'll follow the rest of this!
-
Three great picks, they would all be around #10 for me as well.
-
Never really liked A Great Day for Freedom. The other two, however, are classics. :hefdaddy
-
Eh, don't care for Dogs or A Great Day for Freedom but Hey You is great.
-
All 3 are great choices but Hey You is a little overrated, imo.
-
Last post with three songs, I'll only post them one at a time in the Top 5.
08. Welcome to the Machine - Wish You Were Here
This song is one that always seems to get lost between the more popular songs on Wish You Were Here, namely Shine On and the title track, and that's a damn shame. This features some great lyrics about the music business and the music fits the subject matter perfectly, with the whole track feeling very mechanical, both because of the constant rhythm and Wright's keyboard patches. The vocals drown a bit in the song, but that was probably intentional as well - it gives the feeling that the content of the music is actually secondary to the music itself, when talking about the music business, at least that's how I've always felt. Truly a great track and it's a shame that so many people overlook it.
07. Brain Damage - The Dark Side of the Moon
This is what I consider to be the climax of Pink Floyd's highly acclaimed The Dark Side of the Moon, with the very mellow and soothing, yet still somehow eerie lyrics of the verses contrasting with the grandness of the chorus. The main guitar motif is very hypnotic and draws you in, just as the vocal delivery does, before the chorus breaks loose. Yes, it's only a good three minutes, but they are used damn effectively, in ways that few other bands could ever achieve.
06. Money - The Dark Side of the Moon
While Brain Damage is the climax of The Dark Side of the Moon, this song is my favourite by a hair. The 7/4-intro has an awesome groove and the lyrics are, as usual, awesome throughout. The guitar solo, where the song switches into 4/4 is also great, though I actually prefer the guitar-sax interplay on Pulse over the studio version. I was quite shocked with how many people voted against this song, in the survivor, to be honest, because for me it is definitely one of Pink Floyd's most enjoyable and well-written tunes.
-
Great list so far, just dont forget The Trial and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. :P
-
Brain Damage is too low man. Money is too high. But ok, your list.
-
Money's the best one here. Good picks overall though.
-
Two classics from Dark side, I love them both.
-
Comfortably Numb
Shine On You
The Trial
High Hopes
Echoes.
Just saying.
-
I would rank Dogs higher, but it's great to see some love for Welcome to the Machine! :tup
-
Or nevermind. My new guesses.
1)Shine On You Crazy Diamond
2)Sheep
3)Echoes
4)High Hopes
5)Comfortably Numb
-
My personal top 3 would be:
1. Sheep
2. Echoes
3. Brain Damage
But that's just me.

1)Shine On You

3)Us And Them

The Trial
If he places it in his top 20, then he's awesome. :hefdaddy Not that he isn't awesome right now, he is, but he would be even more awesome. ;D
-
Nice to see some songs from The Division Bell here. :tup :tup
-
I actually wanted to do this with one song per post, but since I could only do one update today, I'll do two anyway.
05. Comfortably Numb - The Wall
This is probably one of the first Pink Floyd songs I ever heard and also one of the first songs that completely blew me away. It has a simple but fucking awesome groove, again some lyrics that are very relatable and some great playing - what more do you want? Also, it's pretty awesome that the second half of the song is basically one long guitar solo that still doesn't get boring anywhere, which is, in my opinion, the mark of a truly great guitarist.
04. High Hopes - The Division Bell
Could one imagine a better final song to the beast that is the Pink Floyd discography? I sure can't, because this song encompasses everything that is great about Pink Floyd - some gorgeous melodies, both in the instruments and the vocals, great and relatable, yet very poetic lyrics (about regret, but also disappointment and envy) and some guitar playing that really leaves my mouth hanging open, especially if one considers that Gilmour had practically been playing on that level for more than thirty years when this album came out. That lap steel guitar solo at the end, in context with the song, has moved in me in ways that few other songs can and it is the fitting finale of a great song, a great album and a great discography.
-
Dogs is their best song.
And High Hopes! :hefdaddy
-
I think i had heard high hopes before but never really knew it, until a few months ago when i saw the australian pink floyd group and high hopes was on the setlist. since i didnt know it beforehand i listened to it and it blew me away \m/ great song. comfortably numb is probably my favorite floyd track, probably top 10 songs of all time for me as well. good list!
-
Or nevermind. My new guesses.
1)Shine On You Crazy Diamond
2)Sheep
3)Echoes
4)High Hopes
5)Comfortably Numb
Awws yeah! 5 and 4 are right!
-
Fuck yes High Hopes!!! incredible song
-
Never really liked High hopes...
-
Alright, the second-to-last update before the #1 is announced, though I bet everyone can guess it after this update, but oh well.
03. Echoes - Meddle
Who didn't see it coming? Seriously, this song is a fucking masterpiece and while it goes many places during its twenty-three minutes, it never feels boring or pointlessly meandering, which is something that very few long songs can accomplish. The vocal harmonies between Waters and Gilmour are noteworthy as well, they just perfectly showcase their different voices. I don't exactly like how this was split up on Live in Pompeii, though - the two parts belong together.
02. Sheep - Animals
This is probably the biggest surprise of this list, but Sheep is my favourite off of Animals and one of my favourite Pink Floyd songs in general. Wright's intro keys are gorgeous and tasteful and they lead into an infectious groove with some of Water's best vocals in Pink Floyd. Also, while many regard Animals as the album where Gilmour shines on the guitar, and while his playing on this track is stunning as always, it's Wright and Waters that make this song, Wright with his layered keys that fit the tone perfectly and Water's bass that pushes the track along on it's journey. Like everything on Animals, the lyrics are great as well, making this an all-around package of awesomeness.
-
Or nevermind. My new guesses.
1)Shine On You Crazy Diamond
2)Sheep
3)Echoes
4)High Hopes
5)Comfortably Numb
Awws yeah! 5 and 4 are right!
HOLY CRAP. I ACTUALLY AM GETTING IT ALL RIGHT!
Now just put a song from The Final Cut to troll me. :rollin
Hate that album...
-
4 great songs. :tup

Not Now John. Calling it.

Not Now John. Calling it.
Isn't that the only good song on the album?

Not Now John. Calling it.
Isn't that the only good song on the album?
There are a few others, the title track is one of them.
-
Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast. Calling it.
-
Not Now John. Calling it.
Isn't that the only good song on the album?
It's the only song of the album I remember!
Actually, I remember the one about tigers breaking free and the Fletcher's memorial home thing. I've never really listened the album, I don't like the heavily Waters dominated Floyd. :\
Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast. Calling it.
YES! I was originally going to call this, but then I could not remember the title and was too lazy to open a wikipedia tab, so...
-
You know what? Let's finish this.
01. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Wish You Were Here
This is it, Pink Floyd's ultimate masterpiece. From the moving guitar intro, with those four notes that have long since become legendary, you know that this song is going to be awesome in just about every possible way. The song takes it's time to get where it eventually goes, that's true, but it's all the better for it, because it allows the listener to savour it the experience to the max. The lyrics about former band mate Syd Barrett are some of the most moving that I have ever heard. Part Two isn't as great as Part One is (save for the absolutely magical keyboard outro :hefdaddy), but it's perfect for what it tries to accomplish just the same. Truly a masterpiece.
Thanks everyone who followed this, I hope it didn't get too predictable (even though Lolz had predicted my Top 5 in the correct order - where the fuck did you steal my list, dude?) and you actually enjoyed reading my thoughts on the songs.
Reap, you're up. :tup
-
I did this thread many moons ago but it must have been lost/purged. Glad it has been started again, I enjoy reading other peoples’ rankings/thoughts.
Actually, I remember the one about tigers breaking free and the Fletcher's memorial home thing. I've never really listened the album, I don't like the heavily Waters dominated Floyd. :\
You should listen to it, even if you decide you don’t like it.
And “When the Tigers Broke Free” isn’t on that album. I think it was a cutting room floor dropping from The Wall, but I could be wrong on that.
The vocal harmonies between Waters and Gilmour are noteworthy as well…
Didn’t Rick do the vocals with David?
-
Not Now John. Calling it.
Isn't that the only good song on the album?
No, it's by far the worst on the album.
-
High Hopes :heart
Echoes :heart :heart
SHEEP :heart :heart :heart
Great list, bro.
-
VICTORY IS MINE :metal YEAH! What do i win? :rollin
-
Great list! :tup
-
Did you count both parts of Shine on as one song? If so, that's one awesome number one. :hefdaddy
Also, we have the same song at number two. :tup
-

It is on the re-release of the album (which I have), but you are right about it being dropped from The Wall.
-

Yeah, both parts.
Again, everyone thanks for following. Lolz, you win the same thing that I won for guessing your top album of all time.

Actually,well... You'll see... Just follow my list.
-
Great list :tup, not surprised by Shine on tho!
I'll start my list tomorrow if that is cool with you folks?
-
Sorry for the delay, I had some friends in town. While doing this I also found my old top 20 list crazy how some songs moved around. Here is the first batch!:
20. Take It Back - Division Bell - Great tune that I wasn't a fan of when I first heard it. I never disliked it but it never clicked either. However while doing the list the song just kinda crept on there. It's main appeal is how catchy it is, I can here myself singing this song in my head for the entire day after hearing it, it's not the case for most PF songs.
19. The Final Cut - The Final Cut - I really don't like The Final Cut (album), it feels like it drags on partially because the songs all sound the same for the most part. The Final Cut (song) however is a different story, it's a great song. The Gilmour solo is a very nice touch and the lyrics are really well written, especially the last few lines in the song. It's just very well composed.
18. Nobody Home - The Wall - I feel this song is very much overlooked but I loved it from the first time I heard it. The added strings just bring the song to another level and again the writing on the song is exceptionally done.
-
Following. To my shame, I must admit that I am not that familiar with The Final Cut. The other two comfortably sit in the "meh"-tier of their respective albums - both are enjoyable songs, but I none that I would rank among Pink Floyd's best.
Oh well, you have another 17 songs to improve. ;D
-
You can miss out on The Final Cut if you want, it really is a forgettable album. Do check out the song tho!
-
I enjoy The Final Cut (the album), but not one of their best. And I agree, Nobody Home is quite overlooked.
-
Some underrated tunes. Don't care for The Final Cut, but the other two are nice.
-
Meh. Not a fan of these songs.
-
Nobody home is certainly one of the most underrated Pink Floyd songs. In my opinion, it's as crucial to the concept as Comfortably numb or Another brick in the wall. God, those lyrics... Waters is a genius.
-
I enjoy The Final Cut (the album), but not one of their best. And I agree, Nobody Home is quite overlooked.
As big of a fan of PF as I am I have never checked out any of Roger Waters solo work. I always imaged it'd be like The Final Cut. Am I right in that assumption?
-

Yes and no. But, and this is coming from someone who also doesn't think much of The Final Cut as a whole, Amused to Death is all kinds of awesome and should be checked out by all Floyd fans.
-
I think, if anything, you have to give one listen to Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking
-
I honestly don't much like Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. Amused to Death, however, is a great album. Like Kev said, a must-have for all Floyd fans.
-
I think, if anything, you have to give one listen to Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking
No. Amused to Death is much more popular and very highly-regarded. Pros and Cons... is not, even if you like it more.
-
Doing a double update tonight because I feel behind due to New Years
-
Bring it. :tup
-
Here we go!:
17. Hey You - The Wall - To me this song perfectly represents the wall. The start is dark and gloomy to which Gilmour's voice sits perfectly on top of. The solo gets even gritter but which segues into a more little bit of "hopeful" section with roger singing which then moves back into the same gloomy section as the start. It's a beautifully arranged song, the fretless bass really adds to the song, and the lyrics really convey pink's desperation.
16. Fat Old Sun - Atom Heart Mother - I used to always gloss over this song not giving it much attention until I saw this version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSqlI-HYuCA). The solo is one of Gilmour's best and the whole song deserves attention. It's a folksy song with masterfully penned lyrics by David. Just a simple, memorable tune.
15. Goodbye Blue Sky - The Wall - This songs reminds me of a dark lullaby. It's very haunting, the vocal dubs are done well and the song is brought to another level on the film version of The Wall. I was never a fan of Gerald Scarfe but he did an excellent job on the animation for the song.
-
Great 3. :tup
-
Fat Old Sun is alright, but the other two are nice.
-
I honestly don't much like Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. Amused to Death, however, is a great album. Like Kev said, a must-have for all Floyd fans.
I tried to get through Amused To Death today and I didn't even listen to half the album, I'll try listening again tomorrow but I didn't like what I heard.
-
Three fantastic songs, especially Goodbye Blue Sky. :tup
-
I'd probably put those two Wall songs higher on my list
-
Hey You deserves higher for me.
-
I tried to get through Amused To Death today and I didn't even listen to half the album, I'll try listening again tomorrow but I didn't like what I heard.
I have tried a couple times to get in to Amused to Death, and I just can’t.
David does such a good job in these solo performances to infuse these old songs with new life. Same goes for Wots, uh the Deal? (or whatever the hell the name of that song is)
-
Sorry for the short descriptions, I'll be away until tomorrow and I don't want to put off the updates until a later day.
More songs!:
14. Fearless - Meddle - I love this song, it has such a light and melancholy feel. This was the first song to really pop out at me when I first listened to Meddle. This song gets played a ton to this day which isn't true for most PF material, including most song on this list.
13. Mother - The Wall - More music from The Wall, but this really is a stand out track. I love the call and response from Waters and Gilmour and it really paints a good portrait of the relationship between Pink and his mother.
12. One Of These Days - Meddle - Dat bass line! This song is so damn good. I remember watching it over and over on the PULSE video and couldn't get enough everything gels perfectly in this song, the lap steel, the bass, the visual. It's simple and memorable and oh so good.
-
Love One Of These Days. So simple, but so awesome. :hefdaddy
-
Never listened to that Echoes album... ;) ;D
-
Never listened to that Echoes album... ;) ;D
:lol
Good picks all around.
-
One of These Days is definitely one of my favorite instrumentals of all time, and certainly my favorite PF instrumental (unless you include the beginning to Shine On)
-
Never listened to that Echoes album... ;) ;D
You should fix that immediately. . . .
-
You should fix that immediately. . . .
The point was that, if anyone should fix something, it's you. Hint:
14. Fearless - Echoes

11. Coming Back To Life - Division Bell - One of the songs that puts Division Bell as one of my favorite PF albums. It's a fairly straightforward song but it has a sense of magic to it. The lyrics are some of the best from the post-waters era, the guitar solos are timeless like always. Kinda a off topic but whenever I listen to this song I can't help but think how much the band has changed from the first album, I get the same feeling when listening to Rush.
10. Have A Cigar - Wish You Were Here - First off I don't know why but I felt the guitar riff always sounded like it deserves to be in a porno. Anyway, this song is fantastic. What makes it so great is that the music pairs so well with the lyrics, the sleazy tone of the song coupled with lyrics. Roy Harper is awesome on this track, especially when I heard the demos of David and Roger trying to sing it, they sound terrible.
09. Echoes - Meddle - My first "epic" so it's always held a special place in my heart. The one complaint I had about this song for a while is it kinda runs on too long during the jam part but over the years I've come to like it. I don't really have much to add to this song except it's perfect for putting on some headphones and just getting lost in.
-
Laughed at your view on HAC's riff. Imo What Do You Want From Me's riff would be more suitable
-
It's the way the guitar comes in I think, but I agree with you about WDYWFM :lol
-
Thumbs up for Have a cigar. :tup Echoes is also great, I guess I'd rank it around #9 as well, being that I don't enjoy the noisy psychedelic section as much as the rest of the song.
-
I gotta say that "Have a Cigar" doesn't really do it for me. I can't put my finger on what it is, but there is something about it musically that just doesn't work for me. I can appreciate the lyrics (because they are great) and the song from an objective view, but it's kinda the song that brings down the album as a whole for me. With that said it's not bad, just not.. great.
-
Echoes should be higher, but good picks!
-
8. Time - Dark Side Of The Moon - I used to love this song because it was a cool song. It had a interesting opening with the clocks, which kicks into this dark sort of drum solo section. The verses are song beautifully, the back and forth between David and Richard is perfect and it all comes to an end with the reprise of Breathe. Over the years though I've really appreciate the song more because of the lyrics. It's truly great writing about getting older and some of the lines really stick with me. Off DSoTM I think this song stands the best on it's own.
7. Learning To Fly - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason - AMLoR is my first cd ever, I think I may still have it somewhere. Anyway it has a very special place in my heart because I'd come home from elementary school and I would listen to this cd over and over, to the point where my parents had to had it from me because I was driving them nuts. As I got older I don't listen to it as much as other PF albums but it's still great. Learning to Fly is one of the highlights of the album. The heavy synth and airy guitar solo really add to the song and gives it an amazing atmosphere.
6. Comfortably Numb - The Wall - Not much I can say about this song because for the most part everything has been said. This is the song that made me want a guitar at 9 years old, I remember playing air guitar to this solo countless times. When I did finally get a guitar it was the first solo I learned how to play (played it poorly back then :lol) I was obsessed with it for quite some time.

I appreciate everyone's lists and I love PF; but I love them so much I couldn't really rank songs quite so easily... sure they would rise and fall much more often than album rankings. Having said that...
Time will always be one of my favorite songs ever. It's musical qualities, lyrics and composition are just superb and the song has always been personal for me as I realized how short life really is at a young age. :hefdaddy
-
A Momentary Lapse of Reason is probably my least favorite album ever (of those that I've heard, of course).
-
I'm not a fan of AMLOR, but Learning to fly is one of its few highlight, that's for sure.
And what can be said about the other two classics that hasn't already been said? :hefdaddy
-
Imo AMLOR is an excellent album. Ah well. I'd predict your top 5 but I'm too lazy. Maybe your number 1.
-
Great updates! Time and Comfortably Numb scored similarly high for me, and Learning to Fly missed the list only barely, such a great tune.
-
I am also a fan of A Momentary Lapse of Reason. It's not perfect but there's some real good stuff there "Learning to Fly" included.
-
The majority of AMLOR is really good. Okay, The Dogs of War is weak, the two A New Machine tunes are lame, and the studio version of Sorrow is too heavy and emotionless (unlike the live versions, which slay), but the rest is very worthy.
-
^What he said. "On the Turning Away" is my fav track on that album. Would probably make my top 20
-
Three great songs. Learning to Fly is definitely the best off AMLoR, a very underrated album in my opinion.

Agreed. The album sounds so stale. The songs really do come alive when performed...um... live. I listen to Delicate Sound of Thunder often, but sold AMLoR a long time ago.

Following this now, it should be quite interesting to read. However, I won't do one of these top 20s yet; I don't know all PF albums well enough for this.
-
Writing up some more now, I was away at a golf tournament so I got distracted

5. Wish You Were Here - Wish You Were Here - Another song that has been over explained and over analyzed but it deserves all the attention it gets. To me this is about as simple as a song gets, there isn't much to it but that's part of it's beauty. Everything comes together and to me it's one of those rare blends of lyrics and music that are just perfect for one another.
4. Yet Another Movie - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason - I wouldn't rank this song so high if it wasn't the first song I can remember myself being obsessed with. It's a great song, all the effects at the beginning create a wonderful atmosphere and the solo at the end is fantastic. It has such a soaring quality to it that puts the song over the top.
2 songs today, 2 tomorrow, and the day after I'll post my number 1 :)
-
Surprised to see Yet Another Movie. It's a very underrated song, but I wouldn't put it this high. Good to see some recognition for it of course. Wish You Were Here is another classic.

Been ages since I've heard the album version, but I've always loved the live version. I remember it being the first song I'd ever heard with a movie clip in it, which for me at that time, was awesome.
-
Second to last update!:
3. Speak To Me/Breathe - Dark Side Of The Moon I lumped these two tracks together because they flow into each other so well. These two are such a great opener to an album that is just spectacular, the tone is set and the bar is high. Honestly when I was compiling my list I didn't think Breathe would get ranked so high but I just kept moving it up after each revision. There is a certain quality to the song that just makes it stick with me all day after hearing it. I'll often find myself singing the song throughout the day.
2. High Hopes - Division Bell - This song is the best close to any PF record, it's a great song to close out their career as a band as well, if I remember correctly it was the last song to be finished from the DB recording sessions. The song has all the elements it needs to be a perfect song, it takes it's time to develop into a powerful ending with the strings and the lap steel solo from David. A song that has always struck a chord with me, it's a perfect end to a great PF record.
Tomorrow my number 1!!
-
Two good, but overrated songs in my opinion.
-
Both are among my favourite PF tracks.
-
Breathe isn't one of my favourites from DSOTM, but I enjoy it a lot. High Hopes is simply spectacular. :tup
-
Two great choices. I don't think I'd rank Breathe as high, but I definitely see why you would
-
Always great to see Breathe so high. :tup
-
1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Wish You Were Here - Talk to me 5 years ago and this song wasn't even in my top 5 but every time I revisit PF this song always seems to get better. There are always new things that I'm discovering with each listen, and I'm on many, many listens of the song. It's perfect from start to finish, it doesn't seem to lag like Echoes does. All the parts flow from one another beautifully and the atmosphere of the song couldn't be more perfect. It's a very haunting song, one that when I hear it sticks with me for some time after. All in all it doesn't get better than this IMO.
There you have it, that's my list! Sorry for the many delays!
-
Can't go wrong with Shine On. :tup
Great list overall! Really enjoyed it.
-
Heyyyyy we have the same #1! :hifive:
-
Great choice for #1. It's probably my #1 as well, at least the first part.
-
Heyyyyy we have the same #1! :hifive:
Yup, I'm eager to see the next list :)

Unlegit, you're up!
-
Alright, finalizing my list right now, will likely start either tonight or tomorrow.
-
cool :tup can't wait to read it .
-
Let's get this on the road!
20. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast
The title pretty much sums up what this is: a very psychedelic song with Alan, supposedly one of Pink Floyd's roadies, describing his breakfast. For the most part, I don't really care for this type of song, but this one is really fun to listen to. If you don't care for Pink Floyd's early period, I recommend this song, as it is one of my favorites.
19. Take it Back
Take it Back doesn't really have that "normal" Pink Floyd sound, but admittedly, I still really like it. It's definitely a lot more poppy sounding in many ways, especially with the synth-like keyboard sound. Gilmour's vocals are great here, and sound evne better coupled with the background singers.
18. Mother
Great song off of The Wall. The acoustic sections are nice, but nothing extraordinary. The real highlight here is the instrumental section, and while short, is really nice, especially the guitar solo. I also like the switch off singing of Waters and Gilmour.
17. What Do You Want From Me
Another song coming from The Division Bell. This song has a very blues-influenced feel to it, I guess sort of similar to Gilmour's solo albums, but not really. The background vocals are very fitting here. The mini guitar riffs are really cool; I wish there was a full on guitar solo.
-
I've always liked Alan's psychedelic breakfast, good choice. Take it back is a great song that I didn't expect see here. What do you want from me is good too, there is a song on gilmours first album that has the same intro guitar solo.
-

-
Sorry. It's clear that I can't keep up with these lists. I'll (try to) post a big update tonight.
-
16. Atom Heart Mother
The longest Pink Floyd song (aside from Shine On You Crazy Diamond if it is pieced together). This is the first real epic that Pink Floyd ever attempted, and thus, is flawed in some ways, similar to The Fountain of Lamneth. However, the Funky Dung part as well as the finale are both very strong parts of the suite.
15. Dogs
One of the most overrated Pink Floyd songs ever in my opinion. The first couple minutes and the ending are both really good, but the middle ambient section completely drags the song down. It goes on droning for much longer than it needs to be. If they had cut out half or so of this section, the song would work much better. Still, it's an enjoyable listen from time to time, especially the guitar solo starting at about 3:50.
14. Any Colour You Like
Great underrated song from The Dark Side of the Moon. It is pretty much instrumental, but there is some soft singing in the background. The synth and the guitar solo are both highlights. Also, live versions of this song performed during 1975 improve the song even more. I highly recommend that you listen to those extended versions.
13. Hey You
Opening the second disc of The Wall, Hey You is definitely one of the highlights off of the album. Like the rest of the album, it is extremely dark in tone, but it works to its advantage. I really like the contrasting of Gilmour's softer and more relaxing vocals and Waters' higher pitched singing. The part directly after the guitar solo has an awesome chord progression.
12. Us and Them
Us and Them is the longest song off of The Dark Side of the Moon. Aside from the annoying background singers in the chorus, which sort of kill the very soft mood throughout the rest of the song, it is great. I'm a big fan of saxophone, and this song is no different. The two solos are very good, with the second one being slightly stronger than the former.
11. Run Like Hell
While this is not one of Pink Floyd proggier songs, it is still performed amazingly well. The slightly dampened(?) guitar sound fits great with the "Run, Run, Run" chant as well as the echoed vocals that constantly switch through each channel. I was never a fan of the sound effects at the end, but luckily the song doesn't fade out on it like Another Brick in the Wall (Part II) and ends on a hard chord.
10. Pigs (Three Different Ones)
The second song off Animals in this update. This song suffers from following pretty much the same chord progression throughout the entire song, however, the chords are constantly being improved and experimented on. The talk box solo is quite cool, but the best part is the ending guitar solo, which is one of my favorite Gilmour solos ever. It's awesome that Pink Floyd extended this song during live performances, similar to Any Colour You Like.
Here's my update. Again, my apologies for the very delayed. I'll really make an effort to not forget about this and finish by the end of the week, but obviously no guarantees. Hope you enjoyed reading these so far.
-
Some great picks there. There was a time where I really loved Atom Heart but I rarely listen to it anymore. Not a big fan of pigs or dogs.
-
Great picks! I agree that Dogs could use some shortening, but to me, it's still far superior to Pigs. I'm no big fan of Any Colour You Like or Atom Heart Mother, though, both fail to hold my interest throughout, even though there are some cool parts in both.
-
9. Learning to Fly
Definitely not in the vein of a "regular" Pink Floyd song (if that even exists), but I've gotta say, they completely nailed it. Very disappointing that this song only made it to the consolation. I really enjoy the very relaxing sort of mood the vocals and instruments make. The chorus is amazing with the background singers coupled Gilmour's almost whispered singing.
8. One of These Days
Intense. Heavy. Crazy. Easily one of Pink Floyd's most "rocked out" songs ever, if not the most rocked out (I'm sure there is a song I'm missing). Obviously the bassline is the forefront of the song, but all the instruments shine here. Although half of the song is building up to the climax, it is so cool anticipating when the full band kicks in. The PULSE version is pure amazingness.
7. Time
One of the most popular Pink Floyd songs, and for good reason. The two and half minute opening with the ringing and chiming of clocks and alarms before going into the mysterious intro is very atmospheric. Of course, the main focus of the song is the amazing guitar solo, however the rest of the song, especially the reprise of Breathe, is all awesome stuff.
6. Wish You Were Here
A perfect song to listen to when wishing to relax and chill. The opening fading in from Have a Cigar with the radio-like sounding guitar and the ending fading out into the wooshing sounds of Shine On You Crazy Diamond is just ingenious. Not much more I can say about this song, but it's just so peaceful.
Next update will have two more songs, and then I'll reveal the final two in the last update. Stay tuned!
-
w00t! Learning to Fly, I love that song. I always prefer live versions, Tim always adds a great solo to the song.
The rest of this list is great :tup
-
Four great songs, though I would only place Time quite as high. Great to see some more love for One Of These Days (though it's not on PULSE - I suspect you're talking about Delicate Sound of Thunder?).
-
One of These Days is on the Pulse DVD, though. ;) And they did release a live version from The Division Bell tour on the High Hopes single.
But yeah, the live versions from the last two Floyd tours obliterate the original. Gilmour's tone was too heavy on the studio version and made the latter half of the song sound too noisy.
-
Gotcha! :tup I only have the CD, but according to Wiki, it's only on the cassette and LP version.
-
Shame they didn't include it on the CD
-
5. Money
This is the first Pink Floyd song I ever heard, and it still remains one of my favorites today. I've never understood why it isn't that favored among the majority of fans. The 7/4 time signature throughout most of the song, aside from the guitar solo, seems so natural. The saxophone solo is great but it is shadowed but the amazing guitar solo following it.
4. Comfortably Numb
This had to show up sometime, didn't it? I'd consider this the most popular Pink Floyd song, but that is arguable. Anyways, it is definitely deserving of being so popular. Of course, the amazing ending guitar solo is the main focus of the song, but everything else is very strong as well. Waters' vocals are great during the verses, and Gilmour has some of his best parts during the chorus. The first guitar solo is often forgotten in wake of its rival, but that one is awesome too. I highly recommend checking out the PULSE live version; it is even better than the original in some ways.
3. Sheep
This is one of the more under appreciated songs of Pink Floyd's vast catalog. While Animals is considered one of Pink Floyd's best albums, this song is usually not that appreciated. That's a shame, because it is so great. The keyboard intro is quite awesome, especially when the bass slowly fades in and the drums kick in too. The whole song is awesome, but the best part is definitely the outro, which may be my favorite Pink Floyd moment of all time. The guitar riff is just delicious, and is even better backed by the bass and keyboard. And at the end, you have some sounds of sheep - fitting, I suppose.
Last update coming soon! I think we all know what the two songs are going to be, but the question is, in what order? Hope you enjoyed reading this write ups.
-
Three great songs that I ranked similarly high, I believe. I agree with you on Money, it's a shame that so many people dismiss it. The main groove of the song is fantastic.
-
Gotcha! :tup I only have the CD, but according to Wiki, it's only on the cassette and LP version.
Check it out on the DVD, it's really a great song.
-
2. Echoes
1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond
No point in explaining both songs, as they're both so well known and almost universally considered to be Pink Floyd's finest works ever. Hope you enjoyed my list! Sorry it took so long there in the middle, picked it up a bit though at the end. Anyways, whoever's up next can start!
-
Great songs, both in my Top 3. Also, you have the same Top 3 as Reap and me! :hifive:
Marco, you're up.
