It's definitely checkmate as in Australia we are not polite enough to just tell the waiter that the food is 'stale'' which to me doesn't make a lot of sense.  If our food is no good, we say, 'oi mate, my meal is fucked, can we send her back?'

I think it is; the white piece is a queen, is it not?  That's check, and the black king has no other move that doesn't place it in check.

I think it is; the white piece is a queen, is it not?  That's check, and the black king has no other move that doesn't place it in check.

I think it's because the black king piece is not in check at it's current position. So, unless it moves, it is not in check, which is why it is stalemate. (I haven't play chess in more than 15 years, so )

Way I read the board is BKing A8, WQueen C8, and Wknight C6. White does not have a king in this picture as the top is clearly different from the Black king (no cross) so its definitely a White Queen. Dunno where Wking is, but somewhere on row 1 off picture I assume.



In this case BKing is in check from the Queen along row 8. The only legal move for the king that is would not remain in check from the queen is King to A7, but that would be in check from Knight. Ergo, checkmate. If it was a white king, it would be stalemate as any legal move by the black king would place it into check but its current position would be safe.

It's happening more frequent at shorter length, so technically getting faster

If you were to replace the silence with actual notes, it would sound like it's getting quicker.  I get why you would think that though.  The tempo isn't increasing, just more notes each time.

I get where you're coming from.  If it's just silence, you can't really notate it.  I would imagine a different story if there were music before and after the selection of these silent notes.
