Hahaha. I once played Hatework in a room full of people that would normally be rushing to rave music. The effect was profound!

Wow, that's a broad category.  Let me slice it up a bit:

Black metal:

Borknagar - The Olden Domain
Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Emperor - Anthems To the Welken At Dusk
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter

Death metal:

Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus
Dismember - Like An Everflowing Stream
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Grave - Into the Grave
Morbid Angel - Covenant

Melodic death metal:

Arch Enemy - Stigmata
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Carcass - Heartwork
Dark Tranquillity - Projector
In Flames - Colony

Progressive death metal

Cynic - Focus
Death - Symbolic
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Dan Swano - Moontower
Opeth - My Arms Your Hearse

Thrash metal:

Deliverance - Weapons of Our Warfare
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Testament - The Gathering
Tourniquet - Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance
Znowhite - Act of God

Huh, my taste looks more basic than I thought it would be (maybe less so in thrash).  Oh well, it's the era of classics.  If the thread keeps going for awhile maybe I should come up with an underrated five from each category.

I remember DTM!!! I still spin that album occasionally. I was always really disappointed they didn’t release more than one album.

Some good mentions here. I’ll add:

Voivod - Dimension Hatross
Destruction - Infernal Overkill & Eternal Devastation
Nuclear Assault - Game Over/Survive/Handle With Care
Sacred Reich - Ignorance
Dark Angel - Leave Scars
Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare (might be the best of all)

Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare (might be the best of all)

I have this on vinyl. Always liked it. My issue with most of the 80's thrash was always the vocals.

Killer mentions!!!!! Saw Death Angel on their first big tour with Slayer and Overkill at The Ritz NYC! Dave Clemmons from DTM has been a friend since I was a teenager. Chris and Mark Poland are awesome dudes as well as bassist Dave Randi. Dave just released some DTM demos. Link below!

Billy Milano!!

Laaz Rocket opened. They were a great band too.

I went to this tour. MOD canceled.

We heard a rumor that Billy Milano stepped off the bus, took one look at the venue and said “I don’t do birthday parties“ and got back on the bus. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it was a really out-of-the-way place.

At the time, There were tons of restrictions on music in Seattle and all ages shows were extremely hard to come by. As a result, promoters started booking in venues that were outside of the Seattle area proper. One of these places was essentially an abandoned grocery store near the Naval town of Bremerton which is on the peninsula across Puget Sound from Seattle. It’s about a 20 minute ferry ride to get there from downtown. They called the venue Natasha’s, and several shows went down there. I saw Destruction open for the Cro-Mags just a few months later, and my buddies saw Suicidal Tendencies there. But it was literally a large empty store in the middle of an abandoned forest. So it really made you feel like you were out in the middle of the sticks.

Anyway, I’m not sure if the reason for the cancellation was true to the rumors I heard, but nevertheless Laaz Rocket immediately hung up a banner saying “the show must go on!“ And just offered to charge people two bucks a head in cash to come in and see them play a headlining set. We were already there anyway, so we went ahead and paid the two bucks and went in. They put on a hell of a show and I went out and bought their album Annihilation Principle the very next day. That’s another underrated classic.

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant by Dimmu Borgir is the best symphonic black metal ever created. But if we're being tr00, then Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is outstanding if you can get past Varg's "history"

As music it's pretty good.  I don't think I would put it over top of say, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise or others from Emperor, Diabolical Masquerade's Nightwork, which I already mentioned, Axamenta's Ever-Arch-I-Tech-Ture, some of Arcturus' work, and possibly some others though.  But as pure symphonic black metal, it's hard to beat Dimmu's later albums like Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia or Death Cult Armageddon, since they actually are recorded with orchestras and written from the ground up with them in mind rather than just emulating them with synthesizers.

Varg is definitely one of the most execrable individuals in metal, and I don't like his work or lo-fi metal in general, but "Det Som En Gang Var" is a really magical tune, nothing else quite captures its atmosphere, particularly the hypnotic synthesizer parts.

Nope, it's just Dream Theater initials and the letter A. It's a name I've used on message boards since the late 90's and it just stuck with me.

I love Puritanical and Death Cult, but Enthrone just captures that 90's Scandinavian vibe that I associate with black metal so well. Emperor's Anthems To The Welkin is a big favorite of mine too, and little known album Dead As Dreams by the band Weakling.

Det Som En Gang Var is a great song, and Tomhet is a perfect ambient closing track. I actually like Varg's synth albums quite a bit too even if they're goofy as hell. Too bad he's such a wacko as I think he's pretty creative.

Wrathchild America then changed to Souls At Zero were good.
DRI were more crossover hardcore thrash that I liked.
Cryptic Slaughter- Convicted and Money Talks were great albums.
Crumbsuckers-  Life Of Dreams and B.O.M.B. (Beast on my Back).
Paradox- Heresy.
Viking-  Man Of Straw is a kick ass album!

****I know tons of bands in this style, but please hit me with some underground ones not mentioned as I still enjoy my old school thrash!!!!

On the topic of underrated thrash (imo, at least  :)) from that period:

Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers (all of their albums are good, but their swan song from 1993 is my favorite. Forward-thinking in the best possible way, technical but still catchy, with a ton of cool riffs and moods)

Coroner - No More Color/Mental Vortex/Grin (the latter is not really thrash anymore, but a mini-masterpiece nonetheless)

Annihilator - Never, Neverland

Forbidden - Forbidden Evil

Do you know all of these?

Believer - Sanity Obscure
Blind Illusion - The Sane Asylum
Defleshed - Under the Blade
Heathen - Victims of Deception
Invocator - Excursion Demise
Massacra - Enjoy the Violence
Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death
Obliveon - Fiction of Veracity
Powermad - Absolute Power
Razor - Violent Restitution
Sabbat - Dreamweaver
Sacrifice - Soldiers of Misfortune
Sadus - Swallowed in Black
Watchtower - Control and Resistance

Those are some of my favorite often overlooked old-school thrash classics.

Gotta give a big high five to the Forbidden shout out. Forbidden Evil is a masterpiece. Twisted into Form was good, but a slight step down. Distortion was ok.

Personally, I thought Green was freaking amazing. People call it a “groove metal” album, but I disagree. Most classic thrash albums only have 2-3 songs that are really break-neck speed, and since Green has Phat and Over the Middle, I think it qualifies as a thrash album. The Omega Wave was also brilliant. Russ is just a beast of a vocalist.

How could I forget Coroner??? OMG No More Color is so amazing!!

And I would be guilty of treason if I didn’t mention my hometown heroes Forced Entry. They only did two albums before grunge hit and buried them. But As Above So Below was one of the first technical thrash albums, and it’s absolutely a must have .

I only did five thrash in my first post, but if I extended it to 10 Coroner and Forbidden would absolutely be on there, as well as Dark Angel, Heathen, and the obligatory Metallica (probably RTL).  Extend it further and we get Artillery, Annihilator, and Kreator (probably Coma of Souls) as the biggest standouts.
