Nah, they're actual coffin nails.  Popeye hits Bluto so hard that not only is the tree blasted into boards, pre-cut and forming a coffin, but nails appear and nail it all together, after Bluto is dropped into it of course.

Anybody can blast a tree into splinters if you hit it hard enough.  Popeye can cause nails to transpire from thin air.
