I'll have to make sure I give that Magnus Karlsson album a few more spins.  I think I listened to it once or twice when I first got it, but a lot of other stuff has pushed it aside.

I'll do a proper write up later, but a huge standout that I doubt will get mentioned here is Settle by Disclosure. If you're at all an EDM fan, it's fucking fantastic.

I'm a huge EDM fan so I'm going to check this out right now!

Also, there are Jon Hopkins "Immunity" and DARKSIDE "Psychic" this year for Microhouse too(Not EDM but danceable electronic as well).

Not an order, so much as the stuff I've liked most this year:

Moon Safari-Himlabacken Vol 1.
Big Big Train-English Electric Part 2
Dream Theater-self-titled
Caladan Brood-Echoes of Battle
Volbeat-Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies
Ghost-Infestissumam

Those are the keepers. Moon Safari is running neck in neck with Caladan Brood (epic fantasy themed black metal, fucking amazing album) for the one I've played the most this year, with DT12 a hair behind those two.

Soooooooooo glad someone else here has listened to Caladan Brood's album.  Absolutely stunning album from start to finish....ludicrously epic.  And it's made even more epic for me because I've read the Malazan Book of the Fallen.  Good looks!  :tup :tup :tup
I'll vouch for that one too. It's a phenomenal album.

Caladan Brood will likely be no lower than #2 on my year end list, and it could very well be #1. As Steven Erikson is my favorite fantasy writer, it was a must try when I first heard about it, but it lived in my CD player for like a month. Glad I'm not alone in hearing about it. In fact, my sig is from the song Wild Autumn Wind by Caladan Brood, and the clean vocal version of that at the end of the song is probably my favorite musical moment of 2013.

My top albums so far.  Still need to pick up a few more.

No idea how to rank these as they all offer something different that I really like.

Amorphis - Circle
Anciients - Heart of Oak
Disperse - Living Mirrors
DT - DT
Haken - The Mountain
Karnivool - Asymmetry
Katatonia - Dethroned and Uncrowned
Riverside - SoNGS
Rush - Vapor Trails Remix
Steven Wilson - TRTRTS
Tesseract - Altered State
The Ocean - Pelagial
Witherscape - The Inheritance
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

My top 5 as of now in alphabetical order:

Alter Bridge - Fortress
Biffy Clyro - Opposites
The Dear Hunter - Migrant
Dream Theater - Dream Theater
Sigur Ros - Kveikur

On a side note, how do some of you manage to listen to 30+ new albums in a year that you like enough to bother to rate? I'm having a good year this year and have heard about 15 new albums and really like 7-8 of them. My best year ever was only 20 or so albums.

I don't know, I find it pretty easy; I'm more stunned by the fact that some only manage 10-15 a year.

I don't know, I find it pretty easy; I'm more stunned by the fact that some only manage 10-15 a year.

I just can't just dive into listening to an album release just that quickly.  I need to get a good proper feel for the band that I'm listening to, based on prior releases, before jumping into their new offerings.  Heck, for Dream Theater's self-titled, I had to listen to a couple of their releases with about 1.5 months to go before the album is out, before diving into the self-title.  For Alter Bridge's Fortress, I decided to revisit and listen to their entire discography (including their two dvds) before listening to Fortress, after claiming that I will not listen to anything they put out relating to the album, prior to buying the album.

Although, I did listen to Elton John's the Diving Board on really short notice and liked it right away.

I just don't want to invest myself into listening an album that I know for sure that I'm not going to enjoy.  If I have curiosity about it, then I shall listen to it, nothing more than that.

I have a 6 disc CD changer that I use to cycle through my music, usually on my way to and from work. That way I usually manage to listen to my music enough to form a solid opinion of.

This is, of course, in addition to any further listening I do at home. The only problem I have is that I'm constantly playing catch up with some stuff.

Perhaps one difference for me is that I actually buy my music these days. Which means if I listen to samples or streams of the album and aren't impressed enough to spend $10 or whatever it is, it doesn't get a second chance. It's hard for me to get into a new band that is more of a grower album this way.

Since I trust both Jaq and adace, when it comes to music, I had to check it out and I was not disappointed. Wild Autumn Wind might just be one of the most epic songs that I have ever heard. This will surely crack my Top 5 of the year after a some more listening.

Just came back to add a recent discovery for 2013 and it's shaping up to make my top 3 contenders for album of the year:

Vandroya - "One"

Female-fronted power/prog metal.  Serious chops (think Iron Maiden meets Dream Theater meets Kamelot)

Excellent debut album  :tup

They've got some songs posted on their website here.

I'm going to have to say DT12 is by far the best album I've heard in 2013.

2. Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt
3. Marillion - Brave Live 2013
4. Marillion - Clocks Already Ticking
5. Spock's Beard - BN&DS

Although Clockwork Angels Tour may well beat those.

That's right. I don't know what I'm looking forward to for the rest of the year, but I know I wasn't super excited prerelease for TRTRTS, IR, Deafheaven, or the new Riverside so there's still plenty left that could potential woo me in the same way.

Top 5:

Circle of Illusion - Jeremias

So many great releases this year, my head starts to spin just thinking about it. Some of the highlights are:

Alessandro Bertoni - Keystone
Short and sweet, keyboard aficionados will love it. Produced by Derek Sherinian and the great Virgil on drums once again. It could go undercover as a Planet X album.

Thanks, guys!  :tup

My top 10 (with write ups)

10. Riverside - Shrine of New Generation Slaves

This ended being a close call with the new Ayreon album and I ended up choosing this one because I can easily listen to just one or two songs if I prefer while TTOE needs to be listened as a whole every time to really appreciate it.
Overall this is a solid album by Riverside with a more modern sound than their previous releases but also keeping that distinct Riverside feeling.

Favorite Sons: Feel Like Falling, Escalator Shrine, Coda

9. Von Hertzen Brothers - Nine lives

I was very excited for this album to come out this year as I’ve been listening to them quite a lot and I really loved them however I was expecting something else from them. They seem to have taken a different approach from their previous releases into a let’s call calmer or maybe more accessible which is not always bad but in this case I think takes some of the magic away. I still find this album very enjoyable with some fantastic songs and the usual great vocal melodies.

Favorite Songs: Insomniac, Coming Home, One May Never Know

8. Spock’s Beard - Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep

I never really enjoyed the post Neal era of Spock’s Beard. X was a good album but still lacked something that made me really enjoy it which this album has. I can’t explain what it is really but after some transition albums it seems they found their area of comfort and found a new sound that makes the whole band shine but still keeping the old roots which made me a fan to begin with.

Favorite Songs: Hiding Out, Something Very Strange, Waiting for Me

7. Haken - The Mountain

Haken fans are going to come at me for ranking The Mountain this low :P, but in my opinion this was a step back, or more like a step in a direction I don’t like. There’s a lot of the old Haken in this album and for the most part I really like it but the amount of “prog by numbers” throws me off, it just breaks the flow of the songs and makes things sound disconnected. That being said, the band sounds a lot more mature and Ross has an outstanding performance.

Favorite Songs: Atlas Stone, In memoriam, Pareidolia

6. Sigur Ros - Kveikur

Post rock seems to be a wide genre, at least from the different bands I’ve heard and Sigur Ros always struck me as having their own sound that sometimes was similar to those other bands I’ve listened to but it seemed to me they were more of an icelandic folk band. This record shatters that notion completely as it goes into a full post rock sound while still keeping that unique Sigur Ros sound and also introducing some new electronic elements that in the beginning felt weird but after a couple of listens blend in really well.

Favorite Songs: Isjaki, Stormur, Rafstraumur

5. Moon Safari - Himlabacken vol. 1

My favorite Moon Safari album so far. They maintained the prog, the cheerfulness and the fun but this time they were able to deliver all of that in shorter doses without losing quality. Don’t get me wrong, I love prog and I like epic songs and long instrumental sections but I like it better when an album has a variety of song lengths. This is a step up from Lover’s End and following a similar direction which makes me hopeful that we’ll have more great Moon Safari in the future

Favorite Songs: Too Young to Say Goodbye, Mega Moon, Diamonds.

4. The Dear Hunter - Migrant

Following on the lines of The Color Spectrum, TDH released this new album with a more indie approach rather than the prog they displayed in the 3 acts and to be honest I really love it. It’s a very accessible album that is just relaxing to listen to yet it still has some of the old TDH in there, it’s just no so “in your face”

Favorite Songs: Whisper, An Escape, The Kiss of Life

3. Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing (and other stories)

A perfect mixture of classic prog rock with modern sound. That’s the best I can describe this album. Steven Wilson really went and extra mile while composing this album and also choosing the interpreters, it’s hard to go wrong when you have such good musicians together. What also adds to the greatness of the album is that I had the chance to watch it live in what was one of the best shows I’ve been to.

Favorite Songs: Drive Home, The Raven that Refused to Sing, The Pindrop

2. Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse

Over this last year I’ve been opening myself to other musical genres and very specifically indie rock and the reason for that is this album. From the first listen I got hooked up to the great feeling I get when playing this whether it’s peace during the calmer songs or joy and happiness from the upbeat ones. There is no technical prowess displayed here yet everything fits perfectly all the time. This album for me is miles ahead of any other released this year (sans N° of course)

Favorite Songs: Holy, Backyard Skulls, Late March Death March

1. Dream Theater - Dream Theater

This was my biggest surprise this year. After DTs latest releases I wasn’t expecting much from them and after listening to The Enemy Within as soon as it came out I prepared myself for yet another disappointment. I’m the kind of person that admits his mistakes and this won’t be an exception, Sorry DT for ever doubting you!
The choosing of the name is perfect as this album portrays everything DT is great at and on the other hand there are lots of hints to their previous albums to show the different sides and the evolution of the band. The only weak point for me is TEM, all the other songs range from very good to amazing.

Favorite Songs: The Looking Glass, Illumination Theory, Along for the Ride.
When Ginobili gets hot, I get hot in my pants.

^great list, though while I won't disagree with Haken's raking like you said, I will disagree that The Mountain had more "prog by numbers" as this album was almost void of that. Visions-- yeah, there was a good bit of prog by numbers there, but The Mountain sort of strayed from that path I'd say.

Top Five, since I stopped doing really extensive lists when I realized that all I was really doing was making lists of every album I bought and once you got past a certain level, you could re-write the lists in particularly any order

1. Caladan Brood, Echoes of War

I've sung the praises of this CD in this thread and in the one for Caladan Brood, but that's not going to stop me from doing it again! Epic black metal based on the novels of Steven Erikson, Caladan Brood takes the obvious inspiration given to them by Summoning and created a CD of epic sized, memorable, glorious fantasy themed metal. Their use of immense, soaring sounding clean vocal choirs, their gift at writing catchy melodies that stick in your brain for weeks, even occasionally defying black metal tradition and adding some shred worthy solos, all of that is why Echoes of War is my favorite CD of 2013.

2. Moon Safari, Himlabacken Vol. 1.

Moon Safari is my favorite modern prog band, and in my eyes, they can simply do absolutely no wrong. The distance between #1 and #2 on my list is so close that this could just as easily be 1B. While Moon Safari tightened up their songwriting a bit in terms of length after last year's 24 minute Lover's End Part 3, they certain have not lost their gift for songs that have more hooks than an entire pop artist's career and ability to create amazing vocal harmonies. This band has never done a bad album and I honestly don't expect them to start.

3.Dream Theater, s/t

One of the things I consider when forming my top album list is the simple consideration of "which albums did I play the most?" Dream Theater's self titled album was the only one I played for two straight weeks upon release, and I think I played it something like four times in a row the day it came out.  I shouldn't have to go into details here, but I'll just cast another vote for Illumination Theory being one of the best epics the band has ever done.

4. Dethklok, The Doomstar Requiem

While the soundtrack to the Metalocalypse musical episode of the same name hasn't seen a physical release yet, it has been available from Brendon Small's website since around the time the episode hit.  And yes it's THIS good. It's at once a send up of musicals and rock operas and at the same time an amazing musical and rock opera. It runs musical genres from straight up rock to metal to even a dead on Michael Jackson parody (the song in question, Givin Back To You, also has the best chorus ANYONE released in 2013) with full orchestration provided by no less a luminary than Bear McCreary. You get far more mileage out of it if you watch the episode and have watched Metalocalypse, but even without that you can find something to enjoy. My hat's off to Brendon Small, who not only wrote this epic, played guitar, bass, and keyboards on it, but provides virtually every voice you here in this very layered music, all of it in character as the character from the show. Fucking amazing.

5.Big Big Train, English Electric Part 2

Big Big Train is my second favorite modern prog band and one of my biggest musical discoveries of 2012. How they've flown under the radar for so long astounds me, because everything I've hrard from them has been stellar. The second half of the English Electric albums is bloody brilliant, with memorable choruses (notice a trend in my love of prog?), intricate compostions that yet do not come off as being wankery, an amazing call back or two to EE part 1, and just some plain fantastic writing, singing, and playing. I have no idea why these guys aren't bigger than they are.

Honorable mention: Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall (this might be the best melodic rock album I've ever heard), Ghost, Infestissumam ("ZOMBIEEEEE QUEEEEEEEEN!")

The WHAT THE FUCK AM I LISTENING TO Award: Darkthrone, The Underground Resistance. This album has been praised endlessly for it's dedication to sounding like classic 80s NWOBHM and early thrash, but half of the album's vocals are an insane high warble that unfortunately sounds like Swissgar from Dethklok trying to sing Venom. And while Swissgar in character worked in Doomstar, it is NOT how you want your vocals to sound on an album.

And that's the top of 2013 from me.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.
