Thomas the Tank Engine is a legit entry, not just because of his excellent cameo in Ant-Man, but more importantly because Marvel published his comics/magazines from 1987 to 1999.

Sandman is by far my favourite graphic novel series, so that's settled (although you need to be called Dream - also, Ruslan is welcome to choose another of the Endless although I like him as Desire too). Great choice.

Oh yeah, I did reply but it might have got lost within all the activity:

Yeah, no maximum length so 2 disc albums are eligible.
So I'm just checking out the whole album.

Hope Prog Power is awesome, a couple of cracking bands there this year. How long are you away for? I expect round 1 to finish probably at the weekend, depending on how much listening I can get in and how long it takes me to do write ups.

Anyway, I was able to get lots of listening in last night and today, so you lucky lot will be getting first impressions shortly.

Gulp. 2 discs of jazz fusion - 1 disc might be enough, I predict 2 full discs might actually harm me in the end. Looking forward to the results regardless. The fest runs from Wednesday through Saturday and I'll be on the road all Sunday, but I'll still have plenty of time to pick out a song, I think, without holding the round up.

Well you're the one who sent a song from a 2-disc jazz fusion album so. :P

Cool yeah don't worry, even I finish the round at the weekend, if you don't submit (an album remember, not a song) for another day or two i.e. Monday or Tuesday that'll be absolutely fine. There are always some people who send straight away so I should have things to get on with listening to.

Yeah, that should be fine with me. Very curious to see how Casiopea resonates with you in the context of a full double disc album. That album in particular has mostly rearrangements of older songs, for example, Galactic Funk was actually released 11 years before that record, I think, on another one. I'll be brainstorming stuff to send all week.

Ah ok, that's good to know. I generally like to briefly read up on an album or artist after a listen or two in these roulettes to see if there's any interesting or useful context to be aware of. Seems in this case, it's mostly re-recordings because the band had a new line-up for the album, so it was a sort of compilation.

I know you're getting flooded with music, but seriously, I highly suggest you take a few minutes just to watch this video of them playing Galactic Funk in the mid-80s. Just watching them play is so fun, keep an eye out for when they start dancing and the keyboardist is watching them as he solos (about 3:00 in): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKgjOCuW_MU

Okay now I gotta finish packing and take a cold shower after my car troubles. Good luck this round fellas :2metal:

I feel hangman might be somewhat pointless this round as nobody has changed their submission, but here are first impressions. I'll also try and provide some updates over the next couple of days on how well the albums are settling in with me compared with the prelim songs.

Round 1 first impressions

1. Stylistically, this is broadly what I expected from the prelim although there some surprises too, including some more intense stuff. I like it and there are some really good songs, but it didn’t sound as interesting, at least on first listen.

2. The prelim song was good, but I don’t think it’s the best one you could have sent. Wasn’t 100% sure about the opener, but there’s some absolutely superb, punchy and sometimes surprisingly epic music on here.

3. The full album definitely feels more balanced, which I think is probably a good thing although it just means I need to readjust my expectations for further listens. But I really like what I’m hearing and there’s a nice range of influences.

4. Excluding the song I already know, the rest of the album seemed to start a bit… unconvincing maybe? I really wasn’t feeling it at all at the start, but damn if there isn't some great stuff later on.

5. Hmm, this will take a few listens I think. There's lots in here that really appealed to me about the prelim song, but a lot of it also feels less immediate and I haven't got under any of the intricacies, so I'm not yet sure how I feel about the album as a whole.

6. I enjoyed this a lot. I did wonder if I might find it a little on the samey side, but as the album goes on there’s some nice variety and different moods brought in. Hopefully knowing that will help me enjoy it even more on further listens.

7. The aspects of the prelim that I was less keen on definitely apply throughout the album, but actually seem to work fine on the whole. Or at least didn’t really bother me. Sounds like a strong collection of songs.

8. A bit different to what I was expecting from the prelim song, but this is lovely stuff. Consistent tone throughout, but good variety of styles and ideas, and a great overall sound.

9. This is pretty exciting stuff. Really well-crafted, and with some cool additional influences that weren't really present in the prelim song.

10. This is all pretty good, but nothing really stood out to me (apart from the song I already know). Possible I just need to get to know the other songs better, but this felt like it might be a bit run of the mill.

I think this round is probably going to be generally reasonably positive, particularly because it was the top 10 songs from the prelim that got here. So potential for lots of bonus points. But ranking points are still going to be 4-10 which is really going to test my new relative scoring approach!

:lol Yeah probably a product of generally using different descriptors to the prelim, and focusing on comparisons with the prelim songs, because otherwise it probably would have been too obvious. But seems it's gone too far the other way. Ah well, it'll be back to normal for round 2.
