All the mentioning anc pics of the Corgies has brought back to mind my pet store working experience. This story may be pertinent to this thread. When I was 19 I worked at one of those mall pet shops, this one was called 'Pass Pets'. It was neat because I love animals and it was a cool way to get to play with the exotic birds, snakes, lizards and so forth without having to actually own them. But I HATED the fact that the dogs and cats were caged in these little crates all friggin' day....basically until they sold sometimes for months.
So the deal was every dog when it arrived was assigned a letter code and each letter represented a number, and that was the 'minimum' the store would sell the dog for. They'd mark them up and then ask you to sell them.
Well, if a family was interested in a dog you'd get it out for them and then let them go into a room with it to play with them and what not. It was a private setting ...so I'd enter that room and lay the scoop down. Is tell them the deal....the store wants (let's say) $500 for the dog, but I know the minimum they'll take is $100. I'd petition them to 'free' the dog from its crate fate and take it home for the minimum. Honestly, I sold the crap out of those dogs with that method. I mean, if you could get a full blood boxer for $200 instead of $1000 wouldn't you do it?
But, it didn't take long for management to realize what I was doing and for me to get a stern talking to about changing my tactics. I didn't and honestly I can't remember if I was fired or just quit....but in the four or five months I worked there I was a dog freeing mo' fo'
Something else that always bothered me was we would get 'shipments' of puppies. Literally a truck would pull up to the back door....it'd be full of small cages with an assortment of breeds....and they'd bring them in. Some shady Vet would be in the back room and inspect each one for a minute or two and either 'pass' or 'fail' them. Those that passed were given thier code and ready to sell, those that didn't were handed back to the truck driver and.....I always wondered what happened to those poor pups.
BTW....I ended up with a Boston Terrier from that job....Gabe. He was awesome, I'll try to dig some pics of him out. He ended up as my mothers dog so to speak but he was a cool little fella. I wouldn't mind owning another Boston Terrier some day.
