36. The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium: The Mars Volta has covered a fair bit of ground since their debut, but nothing they've done since has been able to quite capture the magic that their initial brand of psychotic prog rock had. Cedric's vocals were at the top of their game, Omar's guitar work is technical and insane but never forced, and Jon Theodore's drum work is the best the band has seen (yes that includes Pridgen's). Virtually every song on the album stands out in some way, whether it's hard hitting intro of Son Et Lumiere/Inertiatic ESP, the gorgeous Eriatarka, or the one-two KO of Televators and Take the Veil as a closer. There are very few bad things I can really say about this album, which is to the strength of this album and the ones that follow it in this list.
35. Botch -We Are the Romans: The fact that Botch is a mathcore band whose members went on to form Russian Circles and Minus the Bear should give you some idea about what to expect from this album. Botch's technical hardcore sound was incredibly influential, and after listening to it it's not hard to see why. Much like Gojira, the riffs are absolutely infectious – it's near impossible not to headbang while listening to them. Just listen to the riff at 0:39 of “To Our Friends in the Great White North”. Then listen to the entire album. Many, many times.
